The Chicago not normally scene........2005-12-14
This was a really nice little book I found in the downtown Chicago Borders. It was in a section about Chicago. It's good because it showcases a side of Chicago most normally don't see. Specialty businesses, local shops and lodging all in unique locations and surroundings.
Yes there are the few big sites to see, but for the most part this is about building structure and design in the off the beaten path of Chicago. It's nice to see the great Millennium Park in a publication.
The descriptions are a great detail to these gems of Chicago. They describe what the business is, where they are located and what they have to offer. Not only that, but incredible photos that surprisingly pop off the pages of this little 5 inch square book. The rich color and detail of such unique places makes you feel like your right there in it.
After discovering this book, I found that this publisher/author has more. It seems they did several cities around the world, just like this one. I will be looking into those as well.
Nice coffee table reading.
Great stocking stuffer for those into Chicago, architecture and shopping!

The Franklin Report Los Angeles, Second Edition
ASIN: 0970578016 |
Book Description
THE FRANKLIN REPORT, a Manhattan-based print and on-line publishing company offering readers the most complete, inside information on top-ranked home service providers, announces the launch of its second title, THE FRANKLIN REPORT: Chicago, The Insider's Guide to Home Service Providers ($22.50, paperback original).
The first of its kind, this comprehensive, 300-page survey based on client reviews of the top home service providers in Chicago provides ground-breaking imformation on home service companies and individuals who have acheived national recognition, as well as those who are considered well-kept secrets among industry "insiders". Also included are in-depth overviews on how to hire providers in 24 home service categories ranging from architects to interior decorators to plumbers, and everything in between.
"Our mission is to simplify the task of choosing a home service provider by codifying the "word of mouth" process consumers rely on, and to offer the community a chance to contribute to this on-going dialogue, both in print and on The Franklin Report website. Finding the right person for the job do work in your home can be a daunting experience; there are many choices, not all of them right for the job or client. The Franklin Report and its regularly updated website, has compiled reports on a select group of master artisans, technicians, interior designers, architects and craftspeople based on feedback from thousands of their clients," stated The Franklin Report founder and CEO, Elizabeth Franklin.
The profiles and evaluations which appear in the guide and on the Franklin Report website are based on in-depth interviews with clients, factual information culled from the providers, consultations with industry insiders and experts, and surveys submitted through the website, email, phone, fax and in person. All information is then compiled into accessible, easy-to-understand entries that provide complete provider contact information, a description of services and specialties, a summary, and specific, anonymous comments from clients and industry peers. Each provider is then given ratings on a scale of 1 to 5, based on the following parameters: QUALITY, COST,VALUE, RECOMMEND. "We went to exhaustive lengths to ensure that the information provided comes from verifiable and reliable sources, and conducted follow-up interviews when any questions arose. And as a company policy, we only publish the consensus view, and disregard unsubtantiated information," Franklin said.
"The result," Franklin continued, "is a guide to the most reliable, prominent, and professional home service providers that no home owner or home renter should be without."
The Franklin Report is committed to an aggressive publishing schedule, and plans to roll out several other city guides including Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, San Francisco, and Atlanta. "As additional city surveys are published, existing guides will be thoroughly updated and released," Franklin further stated. The website will also be updated regularly.

Home service cliff notes for uninformed.......2001-12-13
First of all, I must admit that I had never heard of the Franklin Report
until a real-estate broker colleague of mine
was talking about giving copies to all of her clients. At the time, I needed
to find an architect for a large project, soinquired about the book. Since
then, it has taught me a lot about the home services buisiness. I've really
found theFranklin Report to be an amazing tool that saves me time,
aggravation and in the end -- money. The book givesme all the research and
information that I would otherwise have to go and spend hours digging for. I
once called anarchitect whose name I overheard at the office to renovate my
townhouse and I was so embarassed to find out hewas a modernist and
basically scoffed at the traditional design I wanted! Now, I've put together
a list of the book'shighest rated traditional architects and interviewed
them all. In the end, I got the best quality for the budget I
hadanticipated -- thanks to the Franklin Report. Now my friends want to know
how I know so much about the business -- so I quietly tell them my industry
knowledge came from The Franklin Report.
Contractors and decorators and plumbers, oh my!.......2001-12-12
I bought the Franklin Report originally for the same reason I subscribe to Architectural Digest and House Beautiful. I like to keep current on the big names in interior design even though I'm not about to do a two million dollar apartment. What I've found, in addition to bringing me the most informed and comprehensive round up of decorators, is that this book includes much more functional business that I need to use all the time. Most important is that these companies, used by the best ID's in town, are totally accessible to you and me. It really is the first place I feel I've found a credible stable of usually suspect trades. Plumbers, air conditioning guys, painters -- I've found them all with eye-popping results. So while I may not be hiring the fanciest decorator in town to redo my home, I certainly can find some startlingly professional and nice people to improve it at rational prices. My only criticism is I wish they had more categories. I need a good roofer!
The last word.......2001-12-12
For those of us who choose not to buzz around the social circles of Chicago's Gold Coast co-op's and North Shore newcomer's groups, it's nice to know there's a resource to get some juicy word of mouth recommendations without mind-numbing cocktail-speak. The Franklin Report is just that, a who's who power list of the city's decorators, contractors, electricians and other what the book deems "home service providers." It's not only a useful tool that blows the yellow pages out of the water and makes your dentist's sister's yoga instructor's on the side-furniture restoration business a non-call, but its an enormously entertaining read. Anytime an industry gets sized up and ranked, especially with the egos involved in design and the notoriously insulated, fragmented building industry, it's a hoot. The reviews are concise, on target and written with a certain restrained tongue in cheek, reminiscent of Zagat's, which this publication is surely trying to emulate. It's a more complicated subject, but I think they pull it off at The Franklin Report. If anything else, it's a must have for anyone doing a home remodel or who just wants to know the right names to drop at the next
cocktail party.

I teach art in a middle school. When students have finished their assignments early, they may choose one of the how to draw books in my classroom. This book is always chosen first for those that like to draw fantasy pictures. I like to see their excitement after they try one of the pictures. I recommend this book for the 12-14 year old age group, because it is the most requested how to draw book in my classroom.

Book Description
Omar Tyree, New York Times and Blackboard bestselling author and winner of the 2001 NAACP Image Award for literary fiction, delivers a powerful story of two childhood friends lured into the sex, drugs, money, and madness of R&B stardom.
Darin Harmon and John Williams, two good church boys from Charlotte, North Carolina, have been best friends forever. Both use their God-given talents to breeze through high school, and both are awarded scholarships to North Carolina A&T State University; Darin for foortball and John for music.
During their sophomore year, John, the introverted momma's boy, showcases his musical genius in a homecoming talent show that changes both their lives forever. John's romantic crooning earns him the nickname "Loverboy". As his R&B career begins, he asks Darin to tag along as his manager. Darin wants no part in the music scene and has big dreams of his own, but when he suffers a season-ending football injury, he hops on the "Loverboy" bandwagon. The two set out to turn John into an R&B superstar. For Darin, dealing with John's rising fame proves a difficult challenge. The more the two adapt to the dangerous celebrity lifestyle of big-time money, fast women, and recreational drugs, the harder it gets for both to "just say no!"
Just Say No! is destined to become another urban-American classic from Omar Tyree.
Download Description
Omar Tyree continues to move "from the underground to the mainstream" (Nelson George). His tell-it-like-it-is portrayals of urban contemporary life have made him a hit with critics and readers alike, propelling his novel For the Love of Money -- the sequel to his classic novel Flyy Girl -- onto the national best-seller lists. His newest novel, Just Say No! is testament to the Tyree phenomenon. Childhood friends Darin Harmon and John Williams have always been talented, using their gifts to earn scholarships to college; Darin for football and John for music. After John's musical genius is revealed in a homecoming talent show, their lives are forever changed. Transformed from an introverted "momma's boy" to "Loverboy" Williams, John decides to share his musical talents with the world, with Darin as his manager. Together, the two friends discover the prizes and the pitfalls of fame, as Darin falls victim to his resentment over John's growing popularity and his own cravings for life in the fast lane. With its fast-paced storytelling, Just Say No! cuts to the heart of an issue facing many young people: the realization of one's dreams often comes at a terrible price.

JUST SAY NO!.......2007-07-10
This book is as addicting as the drugs one of the main characters is on! I think I read this book in a record 3 days. I woke up to this book, went to sleep to this book and ate with this book. I was so disappointed to come to the end...not that the end wasn't good, but because the book was over! I would recommend this book to anyone with a heart. It is touching and very entertaining. I was a BIG Eric Jerome Dickey fan, until I read, "Just Say No!" Now I am caught in between the two. Omar Tyree definitely did his thing in this book! I am re-buying it to re-read it as we speak!
Hate the Price of fame 'caus it cost too much..........2007-03-07
I recommend this book highly! One of the best books ever!!!!!! I'm a NYC aspiring actor and I'm grateful for the insights the book inspired. He exposed the reality of fame. (What used to be no is all of a sudden- Let's go!!!!)
I understand "Loverboy" on so many levels. He's so lovable after he made it.
Hope I can play the lead character in the movie! (I know I need to get established first!!!)
Mr. Tyree you are a true gem.
From Flyy Girl on you tell it like it is.
God Bless,
[...]
A good read.......2007-02-17
I was able to read this book within a week, which I was able to pull through with a busy schedule. I loved some of the spiritual themes of the book, but the ending was so tragic. Also, the in depth view of the music industry was also interesting as well. I agreed with the fact R&B music today was not like it was today; now singers these days just bring good hooks to rap songs. Music has been desensitized to materalize. Great job, Omar!
Ignore The Negative Reviews This Is Tyree's Best !.......2006-12-27
I was never really a fan of Omar Tyree until I read Just Say No! . Tyree paints a exrbuant picture of the music industry with this novel. I could really idenity with the lead character Darren and the struglles he goes through as he sees his friend John go on a downward spiral. With the recent sucess of Dreamgirls here's hoping we see more black themed musicals in the near future. I could easily see Terrance Howard playing John and a singer like Darren playing Loverboy.
Okay. sad story.......2006-07-11
This was a good but sad story to read. It's sad someone so young and trying to make it can turn they life into something so sad. I liked reading this book by Omar.
