Real Splendor.......2006-03-21
It would take a much larger book to do justice to all the works of Trumbauer. Wish there is one on public buildings by him. However, it is the best one out so far.
They don't build them like this anymore........2006-02-27
I love this book. Found it by accident in my local library. Was suprised to discover many of Trumbauer's buildings still standing and in my area in PA. All except Whitemarsh Hall, which
is pictured on the cover. I still get sick to my stomach when I think of this masterpiece being demolished. One of his other grand estates, Lynnewood Hall, is also in ruins. Please everyone, support restoration of historic buildings. We spend millions of dollars to travel to Europe to see 800 year old castles, but tear down our own grand estates. I also bought a book called "Great American Mansions" which tells you state by state what places are open to the public. I love old homes and
"American Splendor" is a must read for anyone who appreciates great architecture and preserving it's past. I bought my own copy and plan on visiting as many sites as I can.
Excellent Architectural Book!!.......2005-10-05
This is a very fine architectural book and would be a great addition to anyones collection. The only down side is that I bought this book hoping that one of Trumbauers lesser known houses would be in it. It's the Benjamin C Allen House, in my hown town of Colorado Springs CO. It actually has a funny story to why it was demolished too. Mr allen built the house for his wife, but twenty years later, ran away with her chamber maid. She couldn't bear to live in the house he had had built for her, so she had it demollished and a local architect had a near replica built in its place. Other than not having any information on the Allen House, this is a fine book.
Absolutely Fabulous.......2005-01-15
As someone who loves books like this, I can honestly say this is perfection. Anyone who thinks Delano and Aldrich, or dare I say McKim, Mead, and White designed the most lavish Guilded age mansions need, no must, buy this book. Horace Traumbaur would give Richard Morris Hunt a run for his money, as a Beaux Art master. I had no idea he designed so many beautiful mansions, I knew he was a great architect and I knew about his masterpiece Whitemarsh and it's disgusting demise, but I didn't grasp the depth of his range nor the breath of his work. I thank the authors for honoring him with this great book and as an admirer of his work I am thrilled to get the chance to own such a great book. The quality of this book is superb and the photos are outstanding. I can only hope that this book saves the rest of his buildings in particular the Widener mansion, let's not allow it to meet the same fate as Whitemarsh, who needs another bland housing tract, what we need are reminders of special talent and amazing buildings, mansions like this will never be built again. The Guilded Age is long over and the talented masons and the great architects who honored the past are all gone, replaced by the likes of Frank Gehry and Rem Koolhaus.
A Great Book on a Great Talent.......2003-09-06
This is a superior book, and for three reasons.
First, the obvious: Well researched, beautifully presented, excellent high quality images, lots-o-plans, and an engaging text.
Many readers may not consciously notice the second reason, but it makes all the difference in the world. Most architectural monographs (and many books in general) scatter images throughout a book, and it is difficult if not impossible to develop a clear understanding about individual projects. Various rooms will be many pages (and many projects) apart, and with plans grouped together (or not even included). Also, captions will be brief to the extreme, forcing one on a hunt through the text to access more information. Is there anything more irritating? Not so with American Splendor. Author Michael Kathrens and his graphic designer (and editor?) should be applauded for the clarity offered the reader - like an unexpected gift. Each house is presented on concurrent pages, with beautiful (often full page) images, and concluding (mostly) with clear plans. Ahh! Plans! While the captions are short, the relevant text is always nearby. No hunting!
The third reason is another highly useful (even thoughtful) gift to readers, yet also rarely offered. When one concludes reading about each Trumbauer creation, its current status is articulated! One is never left hanging with those two terrible, dreaded, lingering questions: Was this beautiful creation destroyed? (If yes, one wants to weep.) Or is it well loved and maintained? (If yes, a grin spontaneously ensues.) I cannot count the books that don't answer these important questions, or, again, sadistically force the reader to search and search for an answer.
So, American Splendor should be applauded for the usual reasons. But it should also be applauded for reasons that too few authors (and designers and editors) pay attention to.
Michael, thank you for these many gifts.

Customer Reviews:
good, but not complete.......2003-06-28
The book gives clear step-by step instructions on most Flash 5 functions.
However, the book does not give clear instructions on how to create navigation buttons. I had to spend hours of trial and error.
Nor does the book explain how to make input boxes and provide feedback for an educational program. I am having to purchase a few more Flash 5 manuals and hope that at least one of those manuals will help me.
Good book.......2003-04-02
I attempted to learn Flash 5 first with a dummies book and then a sam's book. Neither compared to this one. The whole hands-on-training series offers just that, a hands-on approach to development. The included tutorial movies were especially useful and were the individual exercises the author had us follow along with. It doesn't cover many advanced topics, like action scripting, but for a beginner just wanting to learn flash, this is a good read.
Best Tutorial Book I've Ever Bought.......2002-12-18
I've tried 3 or 4 other books while trying to learn Flash over the last two years. This is the one that finally got me way up the learning curve.
Overpriced? No, I don't think so. The authors and editors put in a helluva lot of work on this book, breaking the subject matter into digestible lessons and then double-checking the tutorials. I've paid as much for other books that taught me nothing (because they weren't user-friendly and didn't keep my interest) and paid six times as much for one-day courses that were excellent but 50% forgotten a week later.
I see some of the other reviewers complain that the book does a little too much hand-holding and baby-talking. Well, if you haven't got much going on in your life, then I suppose you can teach yourself Flash by trial-and-error and by trying to read the inscrutable Macromedia manuals. The rest of us, with real lives, really need and appreciate the baby-step tutorials and extras on the CD.
The authors are teachers and seem to be warm human beings as well. I would not only recommend this book, I'd look forward to taking real, live classes from them.
Top Notch.......2002-12-15
This book was written by teachers for learning, and it does it better than any other books I've seen. It doesn't hurt that she really knows her Flash as well.
Some will bypass the book because it isn't a top notch reference guide for the experienced person. My view is "What good is a reference manual if you don't have a good book to teach you?"
You won't do better than this book for learning Flash.
Great Book For Beginners.......2002-12-12
I've gone through a variety of tutorials, but this one I highly recommend. The lessons are easy and straightforward. People have told me Flash 5 was hard to learn, but with this book I thought otherwise.
Book Description
In this suspenseful fifth book in our wonderful series created by veteran dog trainer Lee Charles Kelley, a clever kennel owner, his lady love, and his loyal canines must solve their most disturbing mystery yet!
It's October in Maine and ex–cop/criminologist turned dog trainer Jack Field and his fiancée, Chief State Medical Examiner Dr. Jamie Cutter, are getting married in a few weeks. But fate puts a wrench in their plans when the police find a young woman's body in a secluded lake. Jamie asks Jack, who's been appointed her civilian advisor, to come to the scene. Seeing the body sparks a memory of a case Jack studied while taking a seminar at the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit. He suspects the death is the work of a serial killer and as the mystery unfolds, it becomes clear that suspects abound, including a sleazy private detective, a well–respected botanist, recruits in the upper echelons of the FBI, and even the wealthy husband of Jack's ex–girlfriend. Add an adorable Dalmatian named Daisy and a wedding ceremony like no other you've ever seen, and you've got Kelley's most touching, heartbreaking, suspenseful, and downright hilarious book yet!

Reviewed by Barb Radmore.......2007-01-26
So what is it that is so very appealing about this series? Maybe for me it is the setting- my own adopted state of Maine. Or could it be the characters? Jack Field, ex New York detective, is the owner of a dog kennel/ training business. He is usually in the company of or thinking about Jamie Cutter, the Medical Examiner. Living with Jack is his foster son, 'Duke" a crime victim from NYC. A steady, well written cast of characters traveling from one book to another to make this a cohesive, fun group of books to read. The starring roles though are assigned to the various dogs that populate the scenes. Much space is also given to dog training tips- a system based on play and praise.
Kelley writes with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek. He seems to understand that Jack makes Sherlock Holmes seem dense and plots are more interesting when they appear impossible. The asides and comments to the reader draw the casual reader into his world. He cleverly admits that these are just good mystery stories that are enjoyable to read- and what more can we ask from a cozy?
(Next step would be a top rated tv show! Anyone out there know any producers..but remember it was my idea first!)
Three Hints for reading this series:
1. It is not neccesary to read them in the order written but would be more enjoyable to follow the continuing plot lines in order.
2. Just remember- the dog is always innocent ! (oops- is that a spoiler?)
3. If you do not have a dog when you start the series you probably will by the end!
Dogged Pursuit
Will Jack and Jamie finally be able to tie the knot? Or will the body found in a local lake ruin their plans one more time?
Jack's ex-girl friend's step daughter disappears as the Jack pieces together the trail of danger from her past that
threatens her present and may end her chances for a future.
(In this book we learn the word snorgle- a snort and giggle)
Dogged Pursuit.......2006-08-28
The best of the series. Full of action and suspense. This is a great series for dog lovers and mystery lovers.
Intricate plotting and creative storyline.......2006-08-17
In Maine, ex-detective and popular dog trainer Jack Field is looking forward to getting married to state medical examiner Dr. Jamie Cutler. Trouble comes in the form of his ex-girlfriend Kristen who wants him to find her missing step-daughter, Jen. When a body is found in the water under the dock, Jack as an unofficial assistant to Jamie is there and is relieved it is not Jen. He sees a light across the water and alerts the police who arrest Clay Heenry.
Jack recalls a case with the same M.O. and the police ask him to get a confession out of the man who they believe killed twenty-one people including possibly Jen's aunt. Jen witnessed the murder and Henry was supposedly on the campus when she disappeared. Eventually Henry confesses to everything but the number and when Jen sees his picture she says he isn't the man who killed her aunt.
Lee Charles Kelley has written an innovative and riveting mystery that takes the hero places he really doesn't want to go but his sense of duty and honor makes him help the police and his girlfriend. Jack's love for dogs is so much I evidence that readers who have dogs of their own that they love will totally understand his character. This author has the knack for intricate plotting and creative storylines starring likable protagonists.

How I Wrote This Novel.......2006-06-27
In one of those strange publishing scenarios I actually wrote my 5th novel, Dogged Pursuit, before I wrote my 4th, Twas the Bite Before Christmas (which was published in November of last year). How did this happen?
Well, I was about 3/4 of the way through Dogged Pursuit when the publishers e-mailed me and asked if the book I was writing could be set at Christmas, to coincide with the November publication date. Could it be all Santa Clausy and stuff?
I explained that Dogged Pursuit was a rather somber book in some ways, involving the search for a possible serial killer (though there's also lots of humor and adventure, as always with Jack and Jamie). And that seemed to be the end of it. However, I did have a Christmas story in the back of my mind so I pitched my idea to Avon and they loved it. So some contract issues were switched around (involving the payment of advances and the like), and they allowed me to finish Dogged Pursuit before starting the Christmas book.
Then came a fallow period where I had two novels under my belt in the time usually allotted for just one! Months passed with me concentrating on my dog training business (and hammering out a Jack and Jamie short story for the Bark M for Murder anthology), then my editor informed me that it was time to go back over the manuscript for Dogged Pursuit.
Uh-oh, I thought. I'd finished that manuscript in kind of a rush. Would it hold up?
I'll let you decide on that, but I was quite pleased with the final results. In fact, I think in some ways this is the best book I've written so far. There's a great new character named Peggy Doyle (she's a campus security cop I think you'll really like), a couple of sleazy characters you'll love to hate (including the reapperance of one of the villains from my second novel Murder Unleashed), and a wedding scene that's both hilarious and suspenseful at the same time. I hope you like it!

Book Description
For over 35 years Professor Donald Metcalf has been "in dogged pursuit of the blood cell regulators." And now, with his masterful style, he treats us to the unvarnished "behind the scenes" story as he and his research team discovered, characterized, purified and then brought these hopeful new blood cell regulators to clinical trials. This history of the "colony stimulating factors" is Don's autobiography. It is also the story of a research team's 35-year saga of "attempting to establish order out of chaos and the vagaries of fate that attend such an enterprise."
Don Metcalf has been gifted with that special blend of enthusiasm for exciting ideas and the perseverance to convert them into life-lengthening hope for patients with catastrophic diseases such as cancer. His book, "Summon up the Blood," makes gripping reading for the countless professionals and patients who have been his beneficiaries. It records medical history that is still in the making -- much of that history owes a great debt of gratitude to Don Metcalf.

Jack Field thinks that nothing can dampen his spirits this beautiful Maine October, what with his wedding to smart and sexy state medical examiner Dr. Jamie Cutter only weeks away. But when he hears about a young woman's body found in a nearby lake -- a body that could be that of Jack's young runaway employee who's been fleeing a stalker she claimed murdered her mother -- the ex-cop kennel owner is chilled to the bone. And soon a black cloud gathers and darkens the couple's happy days, because a sadistic serial killer is using the pristine New England woods for a hunting ground.
The quiet, uncomplicated nuptials Jack and Jamie were looking forward to now seem as unlikely as a dog day in December. And if Jack and his loyal canine companions can't sniff out the grim truth about twenty monstrous murders, his joyous wedding with Jamie may soon turn into a double funeral.

Book Description
The Author was born in the little town of Rahbeh in North Lebanon. He was the youngest of four boys. The family lived in a one room house, with no amenities, no kitchen or bathroom. They lived off the land, a limited bit of land. He and his brothers worked hard to keep the farm up and running. Life in Rahbeh in those days was primitive and simple, reminiscent of biblical times.
The author's father who had been in the USA for some years as a youngster came to appreciate the importance of higher education having himself been only to elementary school. Thus the father's life mission was to secure the best possible educational opportunities for his children; this was not an easy task, not in Lebanon in the 1930s and 1940s. To accomplish that he made the remarkable decision to travel to the west coast of Africa where he spent 11 years away from his family. He would send money home to the mother who's job among her many responsibilities, was to make certain the children were applying themselves at school.
The author completed elementary education at the age of 11, but because of insufficient funds was delayed one year before going to high school. He graduated from high school at age 16 and enrolled as a freshmen in college at the American University of Beirut (AUB). His father's dream was to see his son as a doctor. He thus was determined that his son study medicine. " I have never doubted that he made the right decision for me" the author states.
He graduated from the AUB school of medicine in June 54. During internship he applied and was accepted to work for an oil company. However it was the sincere praise of a single man that not only changed his plan but essentially charted his entire career path. He came to the United States in 1956 to study hematology at Washington University in St. Louis. It was here that Dr. Yunis fell in love with medical research and launched his career as a physician-scientist. Once down that path he discovered an inner drive to succeed and an incomparable passion for his work and the research mission.
This book is Dr. Yunis's way of revisiting the highlights of his career and his research accomplishments. It is also the story of how the author moved from a great institution to a young medical school promising a wealth of challenges and the potential for academic excellence.
Instead he became closely involved in a struggle between two agendas, an agenda for academic excellence against, what in his opinion, was an agenda for a health care supermarket. Because of poor misguided leadership at the top, a center for academic excellence was not realized. Nevertheless, Dr. Yunis could never be swayed from his pursuit of excellence always recognizing that "our mission as physician-scientists is to constantly generate new knowledge through research for the betterment of the quality of human life and to reproduce ourselves always creating new generations of physician-scientists to carry the torch. It is this noble mission and its execution that distinguishes great medical schools from the average ones."
Academic excellence will not thrive at medical centers designed as health care supermarkets. Because such centers place more value on clinical practice and the generation of income they often become graveyards for fledgling academicians. Resources alone, no matter how abundant, will not make a medical school great. It is the leadership at the top; an educated leadership totally committed to academic excellence as reflected by selecting the brightest students and recruiting and retaining faculty academicians of the highest quality.
In this book, the author also touches on a number of topics along with his views. These include : life in the United States, our moral values and how they have changed over the past fifty years; our failed foreign policy and the anti-American sentiment in the Middle East; our war on terrorism; the war in Iraq and the quagmire we have put ourselves into; U.S. foreign aid; the unhealthy status of our health care system; illegal immigration and the insecurity at our borders and other topics.

Like any good soap opera, but unlike a lot of multi-part Japanese comics, Maison Ikkoku doesn't have to be read starting with the first volume to be enjoyed. Most of this volume focuses on the main romantic triangle between Godai, his beautiful apartment manager Kyoko, and her aggressive suitor Coach Mitaka. When Mitaka's father tries to set him up with a prospective fianceé, Mitaka takes advantage of the situation and pressures Kyoko with a hasty proposal, although it comes across more like an ultimatum. Kyoko's parents give her some free travel vouchers, whereupon she decides to take a much-needed trip. Will Godai chase after her? And if he catches up with her, will he be able to finally express his true feelings for her? --Jim Pascoe

bark, bark, bark.......2001-11-18
a couple of books ago two new characters were introduced: Nozomu Nikaido and Ibuki Yagami. Well, imn this book we are introduced to another character: Asuna Kujo. Asuna Kujo is a pretty, rich, and shy girl who has been arranged a maariage with none other than Shun Mitaka. The problem is that she loves dogs, she owns six of them, and Mitaka hates dogs. Funny stuff. However, this book, although very funnt, is quite sad also. Godai and Kyoko have another falling out, and Kyoko feels like she has lost Godai's affection. This of course is due to yet another misunderstanding. This book really pulls on the heart strings. Another thing, Ikuko makes a cameo in this book, and what acutie she has become. Also this book is 280 pages not what amazon says
Best Manga storytelling ever??.......2000-10-05
I heard from the grapvine that Maison Ikkoku was one of the greatest love stories ever written! I wasn't really into that kind of manga until I bought MI Dogged Pursuit paperback just for the heck of it. The whole story revolves around a college boy (Godai) trying to find a real job, and at the same time win the affections of his beautiful manager Kyoko. The most fascinating part of MI though is the minor characters that come betweem Godai and Kyoko, which results to probably the funniest and heartwarming story I have ever read! Manga or any other literature! Takahashi scores huge on this series!!
the most powerful in the series to date!.......1999-09-19
I stumbled across Maison Ikkoku at my comic shop one day. I had some extra bucks and picked it up. That was only about 3 or 4 months ago and I'm glad I had that extra money! This is the BEST Maison Ikkoku manga to DATE! (except I haven't read Student Affairs, Hounds of War, or Game,set,match.. hehe) This is one of those page turners! Rumiko Takahashi at her best! You MUST read MI if you're a true manga fan or a true takahashi fan!
Intriguing Love Triange and Comedy.......1999-01-05
A very nice story that can be created by Rumiko Takahashi only.
In this tenth book, young Godai faced a lot of problems: loosing his future job, expressing his feelings for Kyoko, and dealing with his agressive love rival. On the other hand, Mitaka, the rival, was lead into another trouble by his match-maker uncle. Incidents after incidents happened, and finally a misunderstanding occured, which forced Godai to pursue his dream girl at her "run-away" vacation. Would he ever be able to find her? Or moreover, could he finally be honest with himself and her? The answer can be found in this facinating novel.
Suggestion: Read the series in order if you want to fully understand how the storyline goes.
