Book Description
In a career that spanned the first half of this century, Philip Trammell Shutze produced over 750 architectural works. Because his production was so large, this first book to examine his buildings concentrates on the more important ones, which as a body represent an architectural achievement of a very high order of refinement, grace, and beauty.
Although Shutze practiced from 1912 to 1968, covering the period of the ascendancy of modernism through its final triumph, he remained a firmly committed classicist, practicing out of an office in Atlanta where he produced an extraordinary body of monumental commercial and institutional buildings and country villas.
After graduating from Georgia Tech, Shutze stayed a year at Columbia University before he won the prestigious Rome Prize in 1915. Travelling to Rome later that year, he became a member of one of the earliest classes of fellows to occupy the recently completed American Academy on the Janiculum overlooking the city. The magnificent palazzo designed by America's most renowned architectural firm, McKim, Mead, and White, did not however please the fellows, who found it "too new," and therefore not authentic (Shutze would later devote much attention to techniques for instantly aging building facades).
With the coming of the First World War, Shutze and most of his classmates stayed in Rome as Red Cross volunteers, but when the war was over they returned to he Academy and to their studies. During his five years in Rome, Shutze immersed himself in learning everything he could about the great buildings of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. He painstakingly measured those buildings as well as the monuments of the Roman Empire, committing the smallest of details to paper and to memory.
Returning to the U.S. in 1920, Shutze worked in New York for Mott Schmidt, who designed townhouses for such families as the Astors, Morgans, and Vanderbilts, and he also worked for F. Burrall Hoffman, whose masterpiece is Villa Vizcaya in Miami. Within a few years, though, he returned to Georgia where he remained as the epitome of the "gentleman architect," designing some of the most beautiful buildings ever to grace the American landscape.

Classic Atlanta.......2006-02-18
This is a wonderful book on one of Atlanta's finest residential architects. Mr. Shutze had a command of many styles, but he most famous for his Neo-Palladian Swan House, he built for the Inman's in Buckhead, this home is simply a masterpiece and we are so fortunite that it is today open to the public. This book has wonderful images of the Inman home and many other opulant mansions that Philip Shutze designed in and around Atlanta. The text is quite scholarly and informative, and as I had already stated the book includes many vivid images. Atlanta was fortunite to have had an architect of this calibur designing its great homes during the Golden Age of American craftmanship. Like Houston's great residential architect John Staub, Shutze was a master of many styles, but always knew one didn't need to guild the lilly, so to speak, he also, like Staub, always designed a home to integrate fluidly with it's natural surroundings, this I believe was his greatest talent. Wonderful book on a great talent..highly recommended.

Enameling.......2007-03-31
The book is useful for a broad spectrum of initial enameling skills. While it doesn't delve into minute detail, enameling is a hands-on learning and application art. So I found the directions and and steps useful for my needs. I will take care of the details.
Dover reprint of good cloisonne enamel work.......2006-04-12
This is one of those books that you are giddy that Dover reprinted! it isn't for the very beginner in enameling but it will take the enameler throu all the steps for making some basic cloisonne and then the settings and chains for them. The jewelry working/metal smithing section is worth the price of admission. The chain making section is old school just enough to get people thinking about the need for all the fancy gizmo's they sell today. I enjoyed the book as a whole. the B&W pictures are good being reprints. the project dramings pictures and the wire bend diagrams are great to bad more of the newer books don't include them. The resource pages were very complete and you will find most of them still doing biz and with web sites. If you have old Thompson Enamels you have picked up from some ole timer the list with numbers will be worth the cost itself. I own it, use it
Solid beginner information.......2005-05-20
Well written with many photos and a step-by-step guide for cloisonné. Sound advice and useful trouble shooting. It touches briefly on other techniques without enough detail information to use but enough to start an interest in expanding enamels and a few trial experiments.

Book Description
The daughter of a Chinese mother and a Japanese father, Tsukiyama uses the Japanese invasion of China during the late 1930s as a somber backdrop for her unusual story about a 20-year-old Chinese painter named Stephen who is sent to his family's summer home in a Japanese coastal village to recover from a bout with tuberculosis. Here he is cared for by Matsu, a reticent housekeeper and a master gardener. Over the course of a remarkable year, Stephen learns Matsu's secret and gains not only physical strength, but also profound spiritual insight. Matsu is a samurai of the soul, a man devoted to doing good and finding beauty in a cruel and arbitrary world, and Stephen is a noble student, learning to appreciate Matsu's generous and nurturing way of life and to love Matsu's soulmate, gentle Sachi, a woman afflicted with leprosy.
Customer Reviews:
A beautifully crafted novel.......2007-08-26
This story was simplistic and wonderful. I read it in two days and was mesmerized by the rich culture. The best book I've read in a long time
A sedate samurai.......2007-08-20
The plot of this book makes a terrific outline: A young Chinese man recuperating in Japan from tuberculosis while Japanese troops are slaughtering his Chinese contemporaries in the pre-World War Two invasion; a quiet but strong and wise caretaker who lives to rescue victims of leprosy, including a woman spurned by his best friend; a marriage crisis for the Chinese man's parents; a Romeo/Juliet type love story between the Chinese man and a young Japanese woman. Should be socko.
Instead, it's sedating. Whether it's the passive nature of Stephen, the young Chinese man, or the very pedestrian writing style of the author, I found this book consistently tepid. She shows off her new knowledge about Japanese culture, giving detailed descriptions of every meal and every kimono.
She tells the story through Stephen when the caretaker, Matsu, is the central character. Because Matsu is strong and silent, we don't get inside his character development.
Nevertheless, it's an interesting look at Japan before WWII: religion, relationship and customs.
Beautiful.......2007-08-15
A delightful story of a chinese teen, sent to japan on the eve of WW2 to recuperate after getting tuberculosis. He meets his father's servant who he gets to know and the locals, finding them friendly and welcoming even with the war. He finds the simple way of life, instead of being boring, fills his days and he is bereft when the war forces him to leave.
A wonderful piece of prose, this haunting story of the simple people and their tragic lives is a page turner.
Read this book when feeling calm.......2007-05-21
Reviews of the Samurai's Garden seem to fall into two camps. The "Oh my God, I loved it-best book evers" and the "Are you kidding me? This book stunk category!"
My problem with those in the latter category is that (with a few exceptions) readers who did not like this book tend to mount some moral literary high horse. They relish insulting other reviewers, as in "Anyone with any discerning taste and one scintilla of brain cells would NEVER like this book, ergo if you do you, I hate to break this to you, but you are a stupid, simple, idiot." Listen to yourselves! I wonder what it must feel like to these people to know everything?
Anyway. I did not particularly love this book, but I really can see how many did. The case can definitely be made that there were many layers of beautiful, intertwining lessons in this seemingly simple, yet really more-complex-than-it-looks book. In that sense, it kind of reminds me of the polarizing effect of the Ladies' Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith.
My biggest problem with this book was that I don't think I was in the mood for it. I read it at a time when I had a lot going on, and couldn't sufficiently savor it. This is a book to be savored in peace. For most of my read of it, I wasn't in a peaceful frame of mind as a reader. My personal restlessness wanted more action, less bean cake eating. A few times, however, despite myself, I was caught flat-footed with awe by something in the story. The one thing I took away was to never forget that everyone has a story that helps define them. You just have to be still and listen.
Gorgeous Prose.......2007-02-12
Languish for a while in the Tsukiyama's Japanese garden and you may never want to leave. The serenity created in Matsu's little haven is contradicted by the military domination of the Japanese over the Chinese and the reclusive leper colony struggling for a peaceful existence in a realm beyond that of war. It is to this environment that a young Chinese boy enters into in search of healthier air and soothing salt of the sea . As his body begins healing, his emotions are delicately fractured by all that he learns of war, leprosy, first love, his family secrets, and the servant Matsu - who is truly a master of wisdom, honor, and faith. I wanted to walk through this garden again and again.
Book Description
Based on the experiences of an Englishman who served as an instructor at Japan's leading military colleges, this volume provides a rare insider's view of the making of the Japanese warrior. Starting with an introduction to Japanese military history, Norman reviews the education of the nation's military and naval officers during the late 19th century.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating Historical Perspective.......2006-06-05
This book is a reprint of a 1905 book by British Army officer F. J. Norman. It provides a fascinating historical and includes 32 rare photographs and illustrations. Modern works provide a lot more in-depth historical information about these martial arts as well as comprehensive "how to" perform kendo, sumo, and jujutsu, etc. but this is one of the very first Western books about the subjects. Contents include Japanese military history, education of Japanese military and naval officers, kenjutsu (fencing), sumo and jujutsu (wrestling). A mere 96 pages it's a quick and easy read. Neat stuff; fascinating historical perspective.

Customer Reviews:
Surprising Good! (actually very good).......2007-03-24
When I first saw this book, I wanted to laugh. I thought it would be a joke. It turns out to be very well written and makes many good points. Duff's humor is really interesting and you will laugh out loud many times at his entertaining metaphors. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know Japan better. Be warned, this book forgets about political correctness, so if you are the sensitive minded, do not read it. However, if you just want to see one side of Japan the way it actually is, than Duff' book is a MUST READ for all Japan hands or those who want to know Japan just a little better.
Literary lechery.......2006-09-19
Being an admirer of Japanese chicks, and a long-term resident of Japan myself, I was pleasantly surprised at this guy's paean to the goddesses. Smiles of recognition on every page. Since this was published by a cheap-o self publishing outfit called i-Universe, I thought the quality of writing would be [...], but it was actually pretty good.
Book Description
Kevin Mitnick was the most wanted hacker in the world.
He was called "The Condor," and "Mr. Cyberpunk." He was a rebel. A loner. A poor kid from California thumbing his nose at society as he hacked into phone companies, international corporations--and possibly even the U.S. Military Command.
The FBI couldn't stop him. And they sure as hell couldn't catch him.
Then Kevin Mitnick did the "impossible." He got into the personal home computer of the man considered by many a master of cybersecurity, Tsutomu Shimomura. That computer held data for advanced security systems and top secret intrusion and surveillance tools.
Shimomura--a modern-day intellectual samurai--decided Mitnick had to be stopped. He had the high-tech gadgets and the brains to do it.
Now the leading expert on computer crime made it a matter of honor to bring America's most notorious computer criminal to justice. But the Information Highway is the perfect place to run, hide and get away with dirty tricks...
Let the battle begin.
Customer Reviews:
A great book on the topic.......2004-10-18
I have read all 3 books on the Mitnick manhunt: Takedown, The fugitive Game, and The Cyberthief and the Samurai.
The Goodel book, the cyberthief and the samurai, was the first book I read on the subject. I read it shortly after it was published and thought it was very well balanced between the two parts of the story. After reading the other two books i realized that this book is the best becasue it doesn't pick sides, its just an accurate retelling of the story.
Theres A Reason Its Out Of Print.......2003-04-08
This has to be one of the worst books I have ever read. I have had an interest in the Kevin Mitnick story for a few years now. I read Kevin's book and became more intrigued with his crimes. Upon receving this book, I was utterly dissapointed. The print is huge, and while it is around 300 pages, it took me only a day to read. There is more story info on non-important characters then there is about Kevin. Does not go into detail at all about any of the events. Dont waste your money on this one.
Samurai's don't always use swords........2000-03-30
One of the best books written about Kevin Mitnick. This novel is more of a cyber-thriller than anything else, but gives a fairly accurate account of what happened, when it happened, where it happened, why Kevin was tracked down and arrested and why he is one of the most famed Hacker (Cracker) to date. A must for anyone who doesn't know about Kevin Mitnick and his acts of cyber-terrorism against people and companies.
Good yarn about hackers and the pursuit of Kevin Mitnick.......1998-12-14
Just finished this book. Not the best book about hackers and security, but an interesting tale, nonetheless. A good book to take with you on a long flight. It reads easy and appears to have been reasonably well-researched. It would have been more interesting if there had been more detail on technical aspects; however, I suppose the author might have been eliminating excess detail so as not to drown the average reader in technical information.
made me feel sympathy for Kevin Mitnick.......1998-07-08
This book did what I thought no book could do - it made me feel sympathy for Kevin Mitnick. It's also a page-turner. There is actual drama in this book, which is remarkable, since most books about hackers are bogged down in details about code and hacker tricks that are completely lost on the average reader. This book strikes a fine balance, it seems to me. I learned a lot, but I also had fun. Goodell seems to understand that there is a lot of grey area in hacking, that it is not all good and evil. This dramatically told tale reflects that understanding. I'd recommend it highly to anyone with even a passing interest in cyber culture.
Book Description
BLACK SAMURAI is a "guide on how being culturally sound will open up different worlds to you!" Work, Travel, Culture, Religion, Struggle, & Perspective of a Black American Man are the encounters Wayne Erwin Brown illustrates in this book. Mr. Brown's experience in Japan has left Japanese people with a sense of clarity demonstrated through his educational and work conduct. This includes working for the Japanese Government "Monbusho" Ministry of Education as a participant in the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program, a conversation schoolteacher, an instructor with Doho University, and establishing contracts to work with Panasonic, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Aisin Seiki, and Sony. Aside from work, the author has also given more focus to his music where he now has a CD recorded.
Mr. Brown initially moved to Japan in 1998 at the age of 26 and found means to travel to eight different countries apart from Japan. Theses countries are Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, France, Spain, China (including Hong Kong and Macao), Taiwan, Canada, Philippines, and Singapore. Previously, the author lived in Mexico where he studied Spanish and did research. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the Universidad Autónoma de México (UNAM) before graduating from the University of California, Davis. From UC Davis, the author earned the degrees of Rhetoric & Communication along with African American & African Studies. Now at age 32, Wayne Erwin Brown is in Graduate School where he is earning a Master's of Business Administration (MBA) in International Business. He speaks English, Spanish, and Japanese. "God has your back, but you have to MOVE to see things getting done."
