Collection of facts on airports around the world.......2006-09-28
Very well written text book, that has a collection of facts on various airports around the world. Mainly directed to students and professors in Europe and other countries where metric is a standard. I wish the authors have published two versions, one in feet-inches and other in metric. It is a good text for teachers in the undergraduate class, for teaching the basic concept of an airport system and how to manage and operate it. Reference to FAA and ICAO documents is good. I will recommend this text to practicing engineers who can get a grip on the concept of financial management and control in an airport system.
Aviation Managers must read..........2006-09-15
Mr. de Neufville and Professor Amedeo Odoni have produced a must read guide to understand where the nexus of theory and the reality of aviation systems come together. Quite thorough and a good read, all the while being an excellent guide to a multitude of topics. Well Done!
Must reading for airport planning practitioners and academic.......2004-10-28
Professors de Neufville and Odoni use real world examples to show the changing context of airport planning and design. No longer limited to technical aspects, airport planners and designers must cultivate new and critical thinking on such issues as profitability, revenues, and users services. Influences such as airline deregulation, airport and airline privatization, a global airport industry, and advance technology require this new approach. Based on their teaching at MIT and consulting experience with airports and civil aviation organizations worldwide they provide knowledgeable guidance to a wide audience.
To airport consultants and officials in aviation organization the book provides a wealth of knowledge on all aspects of airport planning, design, and management. It cautions that typical master plans are too static and point out the shortcomings of forecasts, supported by examples of economically inefficient and premature over developments. To avoid costly investment mistakes they recommend "dynamic strategic planning" in the deregulated environment, where privatized airports and airlines compete and shift their bases.
To city and regional planners it provides valuable guidance for making informed decisions regarding the fiscal and environmental implications of airport development projects in their communities.
For airport operators and airlines, chapters on organization and financing, user charges, and cash flow analysis provide insightful guidance. The authors show how to analyze interactions among traffic operations, airline schedules, and configuration and design of airfield and passenger buildings. The concepts of shared facilities and alternate gate operations are also analyzed.
They address the effectiveness of alternate modes of ground access and distribution systems and caution against the costly and ineffective people movers and mechanical baggage distributing systems, such as the one at Denver International Airport.
The modular structure of the book permits different users to select and organize chapters according to their interests.
Ashraf Jan, AICP, is Special Assistant to Assoc. Administrator Airports, Federal Aviation Administration. He also served as Airports Advisor to Civil Aviation Authority, Spain, 1990-99.The review presents his personal views and does not represent policy or views of the FAA.
Authoritative reference for airport planners and designers.......2003-03-10
When two airport experts at MIT get together to produce a textbook, expectations naturally run high. Professors Odoni and de Neufville are no strangers to the team approach, as they co-teach that university's leading airport course. The resulting book reflects their classroom approach: It is comprehensive, methodological, and takes a scientific approach to airport planning. Like their course, the book is also superbly done. In the process, as often happens when science rules over instinct, many myths are shattered and common errors explained. The only drawback is that to fully enjoy the book, a solid mathematical foundation is required. For those who are math averse, however, there is still plenty to learn.
The authors have taken on many challenges in the way the textbook is structured, and successfully so. The textbook is modular, so that chapters are organized into logically separated topics that can serve as stand-alone references. Occasionally, this leads to repetition, but it greatly enhances the book's value as a reference. The authors very nicely combine U.S. and international content. The text spells out when U.S. and international standards are the same and when they differ. It also attempts to explain many of the differences.
One of the core areas of expertise presented in the book is capacity and delay. This is broken down into the topics of capacity, delay, demand management (both administrative and economic), and air traffic control (Chapters 10 through 13). This is supplemented by additional reference material, for example in the areas of queuing theory and on how to define the design peak hour for passenger terminal planning. All in all, roughly a quarter of the book focuses on capacity and delay.
The book has a few limitations: Many of the colorful anecdotes lack sources, which is unfortunate for the reader who wants to delve into the original material to learn more. This is understandable from the point of view that many of these anecdotes describe costly mistakes carried out by short sighted airport designers. Another, albeit minor, limitation is that many of the examples are taken from Logan International Airport in Boston. This is to be expected based on the authors' location. There are however, many other examples, from all continents. Finally, there are a few areas where the reader may crave more information, notably wildlife management, control of obstructions, and airport noise access restrictions in the post-Airport Noise and Capacity Act of 1990 environment.
None of these limitations seriously detracted from my enjoyment of the book. Where this book really excels is in its ability to break down the most difficult challenges facing airport planners into clearly reasoned analytical methods. This should help decision makers avoid expensive errors and provide a rationale for decisions that are otherwise driven by either instinct or politics.
It is obvious that this will become a standard reference for airport planners, designers, and managers alike. Even experts with many years of experience in the field will learn something new and have their preconceptions challenged. New students who are just entering the field are fortunate to have this text as their guide. Through this book, the authors have considerably broadened their audience from their MIT classroom, and carry on a tradition of sharing superb insights into the problems of airport planning and design.
[Disclaimer: I am a former student of Professors Odoni and de Neufville, and currently involved in a joint research project with the former.]

Excellent book!.......2002-12-01
I am highly impressed with this book. The format of the book is easy to read. I'd imagine even a beginner would be able to work through it and create a sculpture as well. The photos are very high quality and detailed.
She supplies tips and suggestions for each project as well as patterns on completing each one in the book.
It's great for those anthro styled animals from fairy tales and cartoons.
Adorable characters and good instructions.......2001-07-10
The characters are cute and interesting... the Dalmation in turnouts is adorable. The instructions appear to be easy to follow, and the projects are within anyone's reach, even beginners. Original style on new and old themes.

Ok book.......2007-05-25
Not all the Photographers in this book are in the same level, this is a pity.
I would like to see photographers like Annie Leibovitz and Diane Arbus aside Cindy Sherman, Dorothea Lang and Imogen Cunningham In a book titled "six women Photographers"
I have no problem with the other artist work in this book at all, they are interesting but other Important Photographers that are missing, Are the real problem.
Is a nice book but not "a must have"
Six women who shaped photography .......2005-11-01
In Real Life: Six Women Photographers (NY: Holiday House, 2002) by Leslie Sills celebrates the accomplishments of six well-regarded shutterbugs: Imogen Cunningham, Dorothea Lange, Lola Alvarex Bravo, Carrie Mae Weems, Elsa Dorman, and Cindy Sherman. The carefully selected subjects represent many generations, cultures, and artistic motives.
With its strong feminist tone, the biographies show the struggles of women who must often balance motherhood and career, and choose between financial security and artistic freedom. Reinforcing this notion of sisterhood, Sills often uses the pronoun "she" to refer to all artists.
A sculptor and author of two other biographies on female artists, Sills lends her creative expertise to the passages. Her voice is one of lyricism, a refreshing approach for a non-fiction work. A few mistakes do surface in the text. The word "mission" is spelled incorrectly and there are a few inconsistencies with the verb tense.
The title offers actual examples of their work too-from black and white still shots of the early 1900s to the more abstract camera work of modern-day photographers. These images bolster the ideas set forth in the text. Unfortunately, some major works are included in discussion, but the image is omitted.
Some basics about cameras and words of advice for novices are included. Additionally, an extensive bibliography suggests further reading. The index is comprehensive, spanning three pages.
Indeed, younger children will enjoy the vivid photography. Still, this book is best suited for a fifth-grade or sixth-grade student, as they are old enough to understand some of the more abstract concepts, such as photography as a form of self-expression.
In Real Life: Six Women Photographers makes a great addition to any school or public library. The slender volume speaks to amateur photographers, those interested in the history of art, and young female readers who embrace "girl power"-making it one of those more-bang-for-your-buck books.
In Real Life.......2001-01-29
I have thoroughly enjoyed Leslie Sill's previous books on artists, and now her latest book on photographers. They are wonderful outlines of artist's lives, their work, and how their past experiences have influenced the direction of their art. As an art teacher, I try to incorporate different ways of introducing my students to a wide range of work. Because these stories are so well-written and inspiring, I have designed large portions of my curriculum around Sill's past books and look forward to using this book as well. The stories are thorough, yet written in a way that the average person, who may not necessarily feel that they have a valid knowledge on art, could walk away from it with a new understanding and interest. And just the opposite, for someone who is innvolved in art, this book is beautifully put together and would be a valued part of any art book collection.
A Great Book About Women Photographers.......2001-01-14
When I first read this book, I was moved by these women's lives. I was amazed at how they persevered at their art through all the hardships of life. I find Leslie Sills an amazing writer. This is not the first book I have read by her. I also have the one about painters, and by reading both books I felt that I learned alot. Leslie Sills is an amazing artist herself, and her own life should be the subject of a book someday. I would recommend this book to anybody, but particularly to people interested in photography or art.
Simple Introduction to Six Outstanding Women Photographers.......2001-01-03
Knowing that women artists in all fields tend to suffer from a lack of public exposure, I took a look at this volume hoping to find some good work that I had not seen before. My hopes were rewarded when all six photographers proved to be talented, interesting, and stylistically different from each other . . . and four of them were new to me. With the two artists I knew before, the biographical essays added to my knowledge, making every aspect of the book a pleasant surprise.
The book is organized around the concept that "cameras do copy which is front of the lens . . . [but these images are also] creations of the artist's intention and unconscious mind."
The essays are especially rewarding for their balance in explaining the artists' family lives, their relationships with the men in their lives, how they started into photography, their technique, and descriptions of their aesthetic values. Leslie Sills is pleasantly succinct:
Imogen Cunningham: "liked to examine life closely" and focused on "shapes, textures, patterns" in nature. She also captured the "essence" of people.
Dorothea Lange: The camera was an "activist tool" which "revealed the sufering of thousands and motivated others to help" during the Depression.
Lola Alvarez Bravo: Captured the real "Mexico after the Mexican Revolution" occurred there.
Carrie Mae Weems: Showed the "complexities of being human" especially in "squelching stereotypes" and "honoring African-American culture."
Elsa Dorfman: "Celebrates humanity" with her oversized camera that captures people to look more naturally like themselves than photographs normally do.
Cindy Sherman: Sees the camera as an "instrument to copy her constructed scenes" which are "puzzles that challenge her audience."
It has not been easy to be a woman photographer and these women succeeded because they persevered, as well as because they were so talented. Their stories are as inspiring as any I have read, and also tell an interesting tale of how your work can help you express your inner self.
Here are my favorite images from the book:
Imogen Cunningham:
Magnolia Blossom, 1925
My Father at 90, 1936
Morris Graves, Painter, 1950
Dorothea Lange:
Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California, 1936 (Series of 3)
There is a wonderful description of how this series was shot on a day when Ms. Lange was exhausted and had driven past the migrant labor camp in the rain before deciding intuitively to turn back and try her luck.
Lola Alvarez Bravo:
Por culpas ajenas, c. 1945
Elsueno de los pobres 2, 1943
The Two Fridas, c. 1944
Carrie Mae Weems:
Mom at Work, 1978-1984
Untitled (Letter Holder), 1988-89
Her work also included long interviews with her family.
Elsa Dorfman:
Robbie and the Dinosaur Femur, 1970
Terri Terralouge and Aileen Graham, 1989
Cindy Sherman:
Untitled #224, 1990
Given that these styles are so different and so vivid, I encourage you to use this book to inspire you to create some art. It doesn't have to be photography. Whether you like to sketch, sculpt, paint, or make colored soap bubbles, give yourself the chance to live freer and take a little time to express yourself. You'll feel so much better, and the rest of us will be enriched by your gift.
Express yourself . . . to find yourself!

Book Description
This book explores "The Louisiana Project," a new work by the noted artist Carrie Mae Weems that was commissioned as part of the bicentennial celebrations surrounding the commemoration of the Louisiana Purchase. Weems has a distinguished career as a photographer interested in history and social critique and her work frequently addresses questions of race, class, and gender.
"The Louisiana Project" incorporates still photography, narrative, and video projection as part of an examination of the complex history of New Orleans and the "commingling culture" that has resulted. Photographs use the symbolism of the mirror as a means of reflection on a particular region and its history, on attitudes about blackness, as well as sexual identity. In another group of images Weems places herself in a variety of locationsplantations, railroad tracks, and chemical plantsas a witness to the experience of African Americans. The video considers a triad of relationships between white men, white women, and women of color played out as a sort of shadow dance.
Susan Cahan places "The Louisiana Project" within the framework of Weems' career, exploring the artist's methods and objectives. Pamela Metzger gives insight into the legal paradoxes and obsessions in the construction of racial identity in Louisiana.

Book Description
Carrie Mae Weems: The Hampton Project brings together photographs from Frances B. Johnston's stunning Hampton Album of 1900 with a related series of images by renowned contemporary artist Carrie Mae Weems. This remarkable book examines the work of two women, distanced by time and race, yet joined by their shared interest in a unique educational experience.
For twenty years, Carrie Mae Weems has made powerful artwork--often with a fiercely ironic sensibility—from complex social observations. In The Hampton Project, she knits her concerns about individual identity, class, assimilation, education, and the legacy of slavery into a series of photographic banners that force viewers to reassess their own moral and ethical boundaries, as well as the political and socioeconomic realities of twentieth-century America.
Weems's Hampton Project is shaped in part as a response to vintage photographs of the historically black Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) in Hampton, Virginia, and period images of African Americans and Native Americans, as well as to Frances Benjamin Johnston's celebrated Hampton Album of 1900. Her gaze is broad enough to encompass initial contacts between Anglos, African Americans, and Native Americans, the institution of slavery, the era of Jim Crow, the civil rights conflicts of the twentieth century, and the land claim disputes of the present. Weems's ultimate focus, however, is her response to the philosophy of Hamptons's founder, and to historic and contemporary intersections of race, education, and the democratic ideal.

Book Description
Photographic images by artists of diverse cultural backgrounds further the understanding of contemporary immigration and the changing face of America in Tracing Cultures.
Themes central to the emerging definitions of multiculturalism are explored by recent photography and photo-related installation art that deals with issues of origin, acculturation, adjustment, displacement, and loss within the context of contemporary American life. Participating artists acknowledge that the melting pot ideal no longer suffices to describe their personal experience of cultural dislocation. Their art directly addresses the history and politics of American immigration in a country now obsessed with and, often fearful of, the notion of multiculturalism.
Artists represented include Albert Chong, Lewis deSoto, Shigeki Ito, Young Kim, Komar and Melamid, Dinh Q. Le, Gavin Lee, María Martnez-Cañas, Ruben Ortíz-Torres, Carrie Mae Weems, and Kim Yasuda.

This book continues with the team behind The Crow: Vengeance. While that book was decent enough, it set up a nice tone for this continuation which is a bit of an improvement.
In this story, Eric is struggling with the fact that after he avenged his lovers death he is still around. His crow tells him that there is still work to be done and he needs to wipe out anyone infected with the "virus". We begin to see the a partnership forming between Eric and Officer Albrecht who worked on the case of Eric and Shelly's murder. Albrecht's son has been accused of murdering a young girl and so Albrecht seeks Eric's help to prove his son innocent.
Later on there are a couple new characters introduced. The Skull Cowboy and Mr. Black, both of whose backgrounds are not entirely explained but have supernatural characteristics like Eric. It's unfortunate that this is the final entry in the series so who knows where they could have taken things from here. It is not an overly satisfying ending, but they never intended it to be.
McFarlane's foray into the world of The Crow.......2000-05-02
This book collects issues 7 - 10 and 4 of Todd McFarlane's short-lived Crow series. McFarlane bought the rights to the Crow, but the comic was cancelled after issue 10, because nobody really liked it. Jon J Muth does have a writing talent, unfortunately somebody made the mistake of trying to continue Eric Draven's story, rather than beginning anew.
If you decide to buy this book, do so only for the art, and not for the storyline. It's a shame, considering the vast talents McFarlane has at his disposal
