Book Description
In the next few years, emerging practices in interactive architecture are set to transform the built environment. ‘Smart’ design was once regarded as the preserve of museum exhibits or Jumbotrom advertising screens, but 'multi-mediated' interactive design has started entering into every domain of public and private life as a spatial medium, interactive architecture is revolutionising and reinventing our work, leisure and domestic spaces.
Fast-changing social contexts are dominated by the blurring of boundaries between work and play, information retrieval and use. Pliable and responsive digital environments raise the haptic and intuitive threshold of public and private space by harnessing physical and mental responses. Will interactive architecture embrace a wider scope of functions and experiences – from sensing mechanisms, to the info-lounge, to the ambient home environment and the holistic hospital – through customisable design possibilities?
Essays and interviews by international commentators Lucy Bullivant, guest editor of the issue, Ole Bouman, Antonino Saggio, Stefano Mirti and Walter Aprile and Mike Weinstock on the cultural issues raised by the emergence of interactive architecture will be complemented with features on acclaimed practitioners Christian Moller, Tobi Schneidler, Ron Arad and Jason Bruges. Benchmark interactive projects in this issue evolving new models of interdisciplinary teamwork include The Media House, led by Metapolis, IaaC and the MIT Media Lab and projects conceived at the Interactive Institute, Ivrea, Italy. New work is also featured by KDa/Toshio Iwai; realities: united, Usman Haque, Adam Somlai-Fischer, Ben Rubin and Mark Hansen, Lars Spuybroek and the Institute of Neuro-Informatics, ETH, Zurich, Kitchen Rogers Design; IDEO, and Tom Barker, b consultants/SmartSlab.

Excellent Book For Anyone With Basic Candle Knowledge.......2005-01-14
The Encyclopedia Of Candle Making by Sandie Lea is an excellent book for anyone with the least be of knowledge in candle making. However, with that said you really need to know the basics to get this book because a few things are not explained in detail in the beginning.

Book Description
Skilful lighting involves a subtle blend of systematic mechanics and a sensitive visual imagination. It requires anticipation, perceptiveness, patience and know-how. But learning through practice alone can take a great deal of time. This book is a distillation of many years' experience, with advice and guidance that will bring successful results right from the start.
Whether you are a student studying lighting techniques in the television, video and film media, or a professional lighting for the camera, this book will be an invaluable aid. Other members of the production team, including camera crews, designers and directors, will also find the information here interesting and useful.
The book concentrates primarily on the fundamental principles of lighting in studios, on location and display, as well as single-camera, small unit production, improvised and economy lighting, and working with limited facilities. Emphasis is also placed on the safety aspects of working with lighting equipment.
Lighting for Television and Film reflects the author's considerable experience of lighting techniques in BBC studios, his teaching and consultancy work.
Gerald Millerson's analytical writings spring from a lifetime's personal experience in the medium, and from his teaching and engineering background. During his career with the BBC, he was primarily associated with studio operations in the Television Service. His lecturing background included courses in TV production at a number of American universities.
His other books for Focal Press are Television Production, TV Scenic Design, Video Production Handbook and, in the Media Manuals series, Effective TV Production, Lighting for Video and Video Camera Techniques.
*A classic and definitive work
*Internationally acclaimed sourcebook
*Reflects current development in lighting technology
Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended.......2006-07-08
This is a marvelous book as an advanced course in lighting. It provides a classic grounding in light effects and light theory. I would characterize it as an intermediate to advanced text book, so it is not a good choice for those just starting out. And while it is chocked full of valuable information, the writting style is very much text book as well, so many people may find the presentation a bit dry. Be aware that the focus is more on television, although most of the advice applies to film as well. If your interest is digital cinema, then this would be a plus for you. The book is also beginning to show it's age in the section on lighting instruments. There are a number of instruments in common use today that are not covered in this book. That information, however, is readily available from manufacturers. Buy this book for it's timeless information on light and its critical importance in the look of TV and film.
Wow!.......2005-05-31
I'm about one third of the way through this book, and I'm really impressed! Most of the information is on lighting, but I'd never realized how important and complicated lighting could be. This book also covers some related topics for creating good looking video -- though I haven't gotten to those yet. The author has a lot of relevant technical expertise, and does a very good job of conveying that knowledge. No previous experience is required, but I wouldn't call this a beginner's book -- the depth of technical knowledge conveyed is impressive. This is a third edition, which tells you that "Lighting for TV and Film" has sold well over many decades.
Lighting for Television and Film.......2001-01-22
This skilfully illustrated book is a practical guide to lighting for television and film. It covers the principals, techniques and equipment involved in lighting for single-camera location shoots, as well as multi-camera studio productions. It is an excellent handbook to help film students understand all aspects of lighting, but can be retained throughout your career in the motion picture industry for reference purposes. It starts off with the basics and gradually moves on to more complicated aspects of lighting. The emphasis is on the practical application of the theory behind lighting. In this respect it is full of examples of common problems and how to solve them in practice. It is clear that this book was written with the knowledge gained from years of practical lighting experience.

Customer Reviews:
Beloved, essential.......2006-12-13
This book is beautiful in every respect. The stories are truly new -- by that I mean that there is absolutely nothing that is cliched or commonplace. The writing is crystalline and beautiful but also simple. But these are lesser things compared to the wonderful themes in this story. There is the theme of humility, portrayed in such a way that we understand that forgiveness, and reconciliation are excruciating, gut-wrenching, but among the most God-like deeds possible to mankind. We see faith portrayed also as very difficult but that God is ultimately always, always faithful.(I do not say that lightly: I don't know how God may someday test MY faith.) We see love that sacrifices for the good of others. I treasure this book up with "The Wise Woman" by George MacDonald and "Perelandra" by C.S. Lewis for the lessons it taught me and the beauty it showed me.
Wonderful book.......2006-11-15
This is a book that you can read over and over again, coming away with new things to think about, new insights each time.
An inspiration and a moving lesson of love!.......2005-01-03
Penelope Wilcox did a wonderful job of showing us how to love unconditionally. It's easy to say we love people but to read the book and the real examaples puts into perspective what true love is supposed to look like. This books is a fast and easy read, not preachy (as I was afraid it might be) and just a pure joy to read. This is one book that I will not give away but rather lend to friends and family so that I may have it to read again. Be prepared to become so engrossed in the story that you feel like you are in the monestary and be prepared to cry.
This is life and love.......2004-05-03
The Hawk and the Dove is a thoughtful illumination of life in community - a portrait of what it takes to live authentically and with grace. Father Peregrine, Brother Tom, Brother John, and the others who inhabit the abbey are flawed human beings who are learning what it means to live sacrificially with and for each other. Each also has a gift to bring. I see myself in them and am embarrassed, joy-filled, relieved, hopeful and grateful. In this beautifully written story, we have permission to face our weaknesses because they covered by the blood and love of Christ. We find courage to look at ourselves honestly and can celebrate because his grace and presence in our lives will transform us if we are willing.
Deeply moving--deeply felt.......2003-07-22
Penelope Wilcock uses an old English monastery as the setting for her book, "The Hawk and the Dove". Within the monastery are unforgettable characters whom she paints with a loving and compassionate hand, showing both their sins and their unbelievable acts of love and sacrifice for God and their fellow man. The main character is Father Peregrine for whom the book is named. Throughout his life as a monk, he develops from the shallow son of an overprivileged upbringing to a man of tremendous faith and compassion, and finally to a shell of a man wracked with physical problems and the aftereffects of an undeserved beating. His interaction with his brothers gives us an example of Christlike love and behavior and likewise his sufferings show us the physical tortures which Jesus endured. This is a moving and inspiring book.

Book Description
The Dove...
She'd been bought for a strip of land, then abandoned: a bartered bride, married by proxy, determined to wreak revenge. As innocent Sara Bishop she'd paid dearly for freedom from her cruel, mocking family. As flame-haired, jade-eyed Sabre Wilde, she would scandalize Queen Elizabeth's court as she set out to seduce her unknown husband, become his mistress--and make him her slave.
The Hawk...
The Queen's favorite, called The Sea God, his white teeth flashed in his bronze face as his deep, virile voice boomed orders to his men. He branded Sabre with his searing kiss and his masterful touch, not even aware she was already his wife. Captain Shane Hawkhurst knew how to command, how to subdue and ravage an enemy, but was he prepared to be caught in passion's merciless snare by a fiery beauty who ruled his heart and inflamed his senses?

I enjoyed this book very much untill..........2006-10-06
I loved the char. personalities and the way he loved her it was a very solid kept my attention kind of book and i love pirate love stories!! I really enjoyed reading this until 3/4 way threw the book the i got frustrated for it to hurry up and end still a wonderfull read but i think another review as well commited on this same thing don't let it stop you from reading this one though.
Thoroughly enjoyed the Hawk and the Dove! A great read!.......2005-09-12
I love reading Virginia Henley's books and absolutely loved reading the Hawk and the Dove. In the beginning, I felt sorry for the heroine Sara Bishop, also known as Sabre Wilde. Here is the heroine who is mocked by her step father her sisters, spat upon and made to feel worthless and then later in the story she is abandoned by her husband Shane Hawkhurst who married "Sara Bishop" by proxy for strip of land. But, the plot thickens; Sara now Sabre Wilde gets her revenge against her family and travels to find her husband to seek her vengeance and eventually and purposefully becomes her husband's secret mistress. The tables are turned, Sara Bishop transforms from being an outcast to a strong willed Sabre Wilde, while Shane Hawkhurst a leader of men and Lord of Devonport becomes enslaved to Sabre's every desire and caught in the web of deceit. It is a compelling story pack full of suspense, lies, fury, revenge and deep romance, a Cinderella story for ground ups. I highly recommend this book!
Good but exhausting..........2005-09-12
I know this book would have been better if I hadn't just finished The Pirate and the Pagan yesterday. If you have read that book you understand what an emotional rollercoaster it is. So today I am reading the Hawk and the Dove and finding myself enjoying the beginning...loving the characters, but as I was nearing the conclusion of the tale I found myself completely emotionally drained and wishing the damned thing would be over. Hence the 3 stars.
The Plot, while good in the beginning, lost its progression during all the intrigues in the Elizabethian Court. I love that Hawk is so desperately in love with Sabre, and I love how hot tempered she is so I get all the intense sex scenes. But I definitely would have enjoyed the story more had she just fessed up about a hundred pages sooner.
I love this book!.......2004-02-26
Great book! I Love the Story so much! I Love the heroine (Sabre)She has the guts to piss the Queen of England off and she does't care ! What a spitfire! I Love this Book!
One of Henley's Better Books.......2003-06-01
I liked this almost as well as The Marriage Prize. One thing about many of Henley's women -- they are usually spoiled selfish brats. It is hard to like them, but in this book, it was easier to take. I liked it -- I could not put it down. I just wish her women were a little nicer.

Good book.......2007-01-24
I've read the series and if you liked the white indian series, you'll love the hawk and the dove series.
Storyline ...........2002-07-06
Since Amazon didn't post an editorial review, here's the description from the back of the book to help you decide if this book is for you: "THE HAWK. Wild and free, the sole survivor of a brutal massacre, John Cooper Baines lives by his wits as he treks across the unclaimed wilderness. Brought to manhood in an indian village, he moves on to New Mexico -- a turbulent land ravaged by bandits and stamped by the legacy of aristocratic Spain. AND THE DOVE. Headstrong and beautiful, the daughter of an exiled Spanish nobleman, Catarina is torn by warring passions, haunted by a vibrant dream. Only a man who can tame the savage land can subdue her defiant heart. Together they will live the glorious beginnings of a dynasty as proud as royal Spain, as reckless and bold as frontier America."

The Hawk and the Dove Trilogy

Customer Reviews:
Touching!.......2006-02-22
This book, the opening of the trilogy, is very entertaining and touching.
I intend to read the first two books to my children, and hold off a while on the third one (they can read it when they are in their teens).
Perhaps due to my earlier interest of becoming a monk, I was entertained with the tales of monastic life, not dry reading about the rules of their life, but the people that lived, retold from mother to daughter for generations and now shared with all who are interested.
Lessons of life are told, that we may benefit.
Wise and Warm Tales.......2000-08-26
Tells the tales and trials of a collection of monks who are just adorable! The stories are honest, humble as well as painful. I laughed at the characters who were ridiculous, unreasonable or senile, and trickled some tears for those wounded. Every corner of my being was warmed by the healing encounters the main characters received. In a sacred moments they were treasured by a brother who embraced them with a mother's heart. The creative wisdom and powerful love of Peregrine inspired me (reminded me of the one who inspired him). I'll savor these characters and devour the next two parts to the series. Scrumptious read!
An inspirational look into what love was meant to be.......1999-03-29
This first book in Wilcock's stirring trilogy starts a little slow, but draws the reader into the world of relationships between the head Abbot and the other monks and brothers so well that you will grieve over Father Peregrine's losses, repent over his sins that mirror your own, and rejoice with his successes as he, through Christ, touches the lives of others for good.
The transformation of this man, Father Peregrine, from a steely, articulate, impressive leader into a humbled, cripled, loving mentor will challenge you to examine your own life and how you affect the people around you.
This book will probably be most appreciated by readers at least over twenty, maybe even thirty, who have lived long enough to see some of their own weaknesses in Father Peregrine, and can be inspired to change for the better. Very moving and inspirational.

self aware quest.......2005-08-09
This book has been so helpful in guiding me through many steps of self discovery. If one reads this book and sees self pity and many lovers it is not being understood of the true message this book brings to the reader. The entire book is about the complete overall picture of ones quest for spiritual development or self discovery. One must go through many trials to be able to discover the true self as this author has written about in her book. This book details these trials carried over to completion into the next life. This book comes highly recomended
A stunning & vivid account.......2005-08-09
When The Mourning Dove Cries presents a vivid and stunning account of one woman's past life as a slave in the Civil War era. The detailed accounts and recollections provide a vivid picture of a life lived long ago, making this a historical account as well as a great story. Just as you are caught up in the action that is taking place, the author inserts poetic phasing that reminds you of the spirit and humanity of the woman who lived this lifetime. A separate section of the book focuses on the author's "life between lives" and it will be up to the reader to ascertain what truths they can accept about the author's experience. One final note: The book was unedited before it went to print. While the misspellings or misplaced punctuation can distract the reader at first, it's almost as if the book went to press perfectly, as though the story was channeled directly from the spirit of a Civil War slave whose education was limited by those in power over her.
The Other Side of the Looking Glass.......2005-08-03
While the book starts out as interesting reading, drawing you into a world of paranormal at one point the author just stumbles, and goes from intrique into self pity. Who cares about her lovers, and all the detail she somehow manges to pull thru the web, she lost it and just never picks up the tempo again.
Sorry, this is not worth reading!
The Answer.......2004-07-30
When the Mourning Dove Cries tells me why I'm here on this planet, the middle of the book when Maggie goes to "heaven" has all the explaination.
This book has action, a wonderful plot. suspense, and is a beautiful love story leaping lifetimes.
I recommend this book to all searching people.

First biography of a genius author, poet, publisher, naturalist, civicleader and collector published so far. He was a bi-sexual who lived in a closet of lies to protect his way of life and his own life. Known all over the world.
Customer Reviews:
An embarrassment.......2001-01-02
This book is an embarrassment, both to its author and its subject. Derleth was an immensely talented and disciplined writer. Litersky obviously has great enthusiasm for him, and I suspect that she put a great deal of effort into her book. But the result is far from satisfactory. The text is replete with errors--misspelled words and names (not just typographical errors), grammatical lapses, and factual self-contradictions--and the end notes raise even more questions than they answer. In the end, the book leaves the reader hungry for a real biography of August Derleth.
A labor of love.......2000-10-10
I am told that this book - so far the only biography of August Derleth - has maddened some of the Mythos gurus almost to apoplexy. I do not have as much emotional involvement in the subject.
The title has nothing to do with the political hawk/dove polarization of the Vietnam era or the Cold War. There are a lot of typos and bad syntax, and the narrative does not always flow smoothly either. And yet in the end I did read the whole book, and enjoyed it. Derleth was an interesting character, and Ms Litersky did manage to get access to a lot of material that I would never have heard of otherwise - and whatever her other faults as a writer, it is clear that she is passionate about her subject.
