3 out of 5 stars Just a standard old house plan book.......2003-01-31

This is basically a collection of off the shelf house plans. I'd guarantee you that if you pick up another title by the same publisher, you'll find many of these plans repeated there. True, most do have a fair amount of glass on one side, making them suitable for catching views of why you built the house there. They have divided the plans in the categories like, lakefront, riverside, ocean, pier houses, and luxury. The houses listed in the lakefront and riverside chapters have nothing special about them to make them "lakefront" or "riverside". Some of the ocean houses do have more of either a Cape Cod or east coast feel, but not all. Obviously, the pier house are as advertised and the luxury are mostly just big.

If you're beginning your search and gathering starting points, this can be a good book. Quite honestly, you'll probably have better luck if you buy a plan book concentrating more on the features you want in a house not, as this book suggests the site of the house. If you want a one story home, buy plan books that say "ranch" or "one story" in the title, if you want a smaller or retirement home, look for "small" or "retirement" or "empty nester" in the title, if you want fewer but larger rooms, look for "open" in the title. After you've got a book with plans with features that fit your lifestyle, then look for plans with lots of windows to admire the view from. If you're looking for something a bit more unique, spend a little more and go with some of the hardback books on the market.

5 out of 5 stars A good jumping off point.......2002-03-21

This book is my favorite of many home plan books. Lots of interesting design ideas. Though I believe any "canned" plan like the ones in this book needs to be adjusted to the site and to personal tastes by a architect or designer, this has a lot of choices and orientations. I have purchased one of the plans and have a permit to build. I own several ocean view lots and have targeted two other plans in the book that will suit the sites.

The plans are mostly by eastern builders if you buy the plans you will find that some of the specifics are foreign on the west coast.

Though one reviewer mentioned the plans were "cookie-cutter" I did not find them so. I have 6 other home plan books with plans that are much more similar to each other, and much less innovative.

One caveat for would be ocean builders is that in most coastal areas winds are fierce. Houses must be engineered to meet codes for hurricane force winds on both coasts. We had to have an engineer licensed in our state go over our plans and it was fairly expensive. Steel beams had to be added for reinforcement when the window to wall ratio was too low. It appears to me that the architects did their best to retain windows and views while making the houses buildable without spending a fortune, or having the owners replacing oversize windows when the seals break. This may be the reason that many of the plans do not seem overly "view" oriented, as one reviewer mentions.

Overall, I love this book. I lost my last copy and am buying it again. It's the only one I know of that has plans to suit my view lots.

1 out of 5 stars What view?.......2001-06-09

I cannot imagine using these plans for a seaside house if you want to have a great view of the water. I didn't feel that these homes had specific construction geared to a waterfront home.

2 out of 5 stars Same old listless architecture........2001-04-04

I couldn't find a single home plan I liked in this book. All the same old cookie-cutter, pre-fab looking designs that would appeal to people with a lot more money than taste.

4 out of 5 stars A nice sample of waterfront houseplans.......2000-04-14

There are some exciting and distinguished house plans of all sizes in this book. The written features are succinct and describes characteristic features well. The plans are drawn fairly large and clear. The housplans themselves vary from vacation types of greater than 1200 square feet and more to luxurious residential homes abutting the lakeshore or river over 5,000 square feet. The plans have the front view drawings of the home. If you are looking for a home to build that is a vacation getaway in the Florida Keys or along the eastern intracoastal waterway, this may be your book to look through... its worth a glimpse at the very least!

Book Description

Is the relationship between the heart and the mind balanced? Author and artist Annette Compton explores this age-old artistic question in Drawing from the Mind, Painting from the Heart. Creating art inevitably involves a relationship between our minds and our hearts. For some, the mind-the study of technique-plays a major role in the process of being an artist. But what happens when an artist becomes so obsessed with technique that all spontaneous expression is lost? Or, what about artists who become so lost in expression that technique is gone, and they have difficulty with realizing their vision in their work? Drawing from the Mind, Painting from the Heart is a 12-chapter workbook that helps artists explore the interplay between such concepts as line and form, representational and abstract art, the analytical mind and the expressive heart. Each chapter features a series of three innovative and introspective exercises that help the artist move progressively from exploring the linear and the analytical, to creating form through massing and color, and finally on to the freedom tempered by mental discipline that one needs to draw and paint abstractly. Featuring over 200 stunning examples from students as well as recognized artists, this unique resource explores the delicate balance between craft and passion, the technical and the intuitive-and is certain to become a valuable addition to the library of every working artist.

To draw realistic is very easy, I think. I wanted to come out of a slump, so I bought this book. I received many ideas by this book. In this book, there are many heart exercises, you should try all of them, if you want to know yourself. I paint & draw with CG tools, but the methods written in this book, are valid and more important than soft operation !

    Product Description

Hundreds of marvelous books on technique make it possible for virtually anyone to create something, however limited, but these three books help develop creativity itself. Compton (who illustrated God's Paintbrush) explores the interplay between such concepts as line and form, representational and abstract art, and the analytical mind and the expressive heart. Progressive chapters take one from simple line through massing and color to realism and the freedom that comes with passion and intuition. It's especially good for the novice; advanced artists will get more out of Betsy Dillard Stroud's recent Painting from the Inside Out: 20 Projects and Exercises To Free Your Creative Spirit. Leigh, a columnist for Paintworks and Decorative Artist's Workbook, offers a volume for decorative artists that focuses on developing creative freedom in metal and paper crafts, mosaics, collage, and decorative painting. The result is a good choice for most craft collections. Warmke's Idea Revolution is the most unusual of these three offerings. This motivational book for designers in any medium contains more than 100 brainstorming exercises. Warmke targets the major obstacles to the creative process by using the work and advice of a variety of graphic artists, creativity consultants, musicians, writers, and actors. The advice is much more grounded than that offered in such volumes as Theo Stephan Williams's Creative Utopia, which relies heavily on aromatherapy and feng shui, and the quotations alone will inspire: observes Herman Melville, "It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation." Warmke's book is highly recommended for extensive art collections. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

    Book Description

Henri Dorra, in his comprehensive new book, presents the development and the aesthetic theories of the symbolist movement in art and literature. Included are writings (many never before translated or reprinted) by artists, designers, architects, and critics, along with Dorra's learned commentary. Fifty photographs of symbolist works complement his encyclopedic coverage.
Dorra traces symbolism and its roots from artist to artist and critic to critic from the 1860s to the early twentieth century. The decorative arts and architecture are examined as well as painting and sculpture. The Arts and Crafts movement, art nouveau, the work of Eiffel in France and Sullivan in the United States are all well represented.
The close relations between symbolist poets and artists are reflected in the chapter on literary developments. Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Verlaine, and Mallarmé are here, but so, too, are writers less well-known. A section on the Post-Impressionists and the "Artists of the Soul" rounds out Dorra's rich and varied text, and his epilogue lays the groundwork for what was to follow symbolism.
Dorra beautifully integrates the different aesthetic branches of symbolism, the different media and national variations, without ever losing sight of the whole. The historical context provided makes this a particularly appealing collection for students and scholars of art history and literature, as well as for anyone interested in the evolution of symbolism.

This anthology is a solid collection of primary sources from the critics, poets, and artists of the Symbolist era. I used this volume in a master's level art history course so my professor obviously thought it was valuable as well.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful overview to an underrated and neglected movement.......2003-04-25

This is a highly readable, clearly written, and extremely well illustrated introduction to the Symbolist Art movement that flourished primarily in France and England in the latter half of the 19th century.

Edward Lucie-Smith argues the Symbolism is the artistic movement that makes sense of the transition from the Romantics of the early 19th century to the Modernism that arose in the early 20th. All too often in the retelling of the history of art, the Symbolists get left out entirely, or at least are not considered as a movement, unlike the much better known and more highly celebrated Impressionists. Yet, there are some very good reasons for anyone interested in late 19th century culture in the wider sense to know more about the Symbolists. For one thing, the movement produced a number of very interesting painters, including Bourne-Jones, Moreau, Rossetti, and others. In addition, other artists not primarily considered Symbolists had close ties to them, especially Gaugin. A number of painters coming after Symbolism were very much influenced by the movement, including Franz Marc, Munch, Klimt, and the young Picasso through the Blue Period.

This last alone would be sufficient to reconsider their work, but Symbolism, unlike Impressionism, was a movement that extended well beyond painting and sculpture to include poetry and literature. In fact, the number of literary artists influenced by Symbolism far outstrips those working in the arts. Not merely Huysmans, but Yeats, Valery, Joyce, Eliot, Mallarme, and Proust were all indebted to one degree or other to Symbolist themes or concerns.

4 out of 5 stars symbolism, an interior art.......2000-04-15

Wonderful book for art research. Short and very to the point, but also throughly informative on the different artists that manifested the ideals of the Symbolists. The vivid pictures, half in color, half in black and white, are filled with dreamlike images and an escapist attitude that the fin de siecle embodied.

          Book Description

This book presents an innovative analysis of the role of imagination as a central concept in both literary and art criticism. Dee Reynolds brings this approach to bear on works by Rimbaud, Mallarmé, Kandinsky, and Mondrian. It allows her to redefine the relationship between Symbolism and abstract art, and to contribute new methodological perspectives to comparative studies of poetry and painting. The late nineteenth and early twentieth century was a crucial period in the emergence of new modes of representation, and is currently at the forefront of critical enquiry. This is the first book to examine Symbolism and abstraction in this way, and the first to treat these poets and painters together. It is an original contribution to interdisciplinary scholarship in art history, literary history, and comparative aesthetics.

            Book Description

Passionate Discontent is an erudite study of the relationship between gender and genius in late nineteenth-century French Symbolism. Born in an era of crisis, the Symbolist art movement was characterized by withdrawal to a mystical, antibourgeois world of the mind and spirit. While Symbolists idealized the "poète maudit," a creative, mad genius exhibiting an emotional state of heightened awareness and "passionate discontent," female artists displaying similar symptoms were dismissed as hysterical.

Art historian Patricia Mathews traverses the artistic, social, and scientific discourses of fin-de-siècle France in order to illuminate the Symbolist construction of a feminized aesthetic that nonetheless excluded female artists from its realm. Along the way, Mathews proffers important new readings of the art of such Symbolists as Gauguin, van Gogh and Moreau, as well as that of their female contemporaries Camille Claudel and Suzanne Valadon. Passionate Discontent is an important contribution to art historical and women's studies.

5 out of 5 stars Where else can you find these plays?.......2002-05-01

This is not a collection that will appeal to the average reader, not even the average reader of drama. But if you have an interest in the Symbolist movement of the late 19th and early 20th century, this book makes an excellent starting point. Though the Symbolists get little mainstream attention today, the movement shook the stranglehold realism had on theatre at the time, and opened the floodgates for Expressionism, Absurdism, and all the various "isms" that have followed.
Many of these plays may seem bizarre at first glance, but all are fascinating, and a few (such as Maeterlinck's "The Intruder" and Briusov's "The Wayfarer") could still hold an audience today. The translations are not always elegant, but the scholarship is sound, and honestly, where else are you going to find these plays? An excellent addition to any collection of early 20th century drama.

If this book comes back into print, grab a copy for yourself as quickly as you can! Most of the prints/pages are suitable for framing and can (should) be displayed in an office or den (law-related or law-based, theme-related). What you will pay to actually own a copy of this book is negligible compared to what you will get for your money in terms of laughter, entertainment, and just plain old "Grand Satisfaction" (like your favorite movie of all time that you don't mind watching again and again)! This book is an absolute "must" for lawyers who don't mind being the brunt of jokes and reminded of their faults and foibles (such as myself), or for people who enjoy poking fun and crucifying the legal profession in an alternately light, incisive, honest and humorous way!
