Exquisitely detailed, exceptionally handsome designs for an enormous variety of attractive city dwellings, spacious suburban and country homes, charming "cottages" and other structures — all accompanied by perspective views and floor plans with measurements. Invaluable to architects, home restorers and preservationists; of immense interest to lovers of Victorian architecture.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Delightful little book.......2007-05-02

A delightful little book givint the reader great insight into Victorian architecture. Providing beutiful vision usingoriginal terminology that gives one the authentic flavor. Using Parlor instead of living room. Showing a sewing room and other such features. Peticularly interesting in the provision and in some others lack of provision of plumbing. Some have bathrooms and some don't.

An excellant book for the lover of architecture or of the Victorian period.

However, there is one awful drawback. And it is most dreadful. Some houses are not accompanied with floor plans. Examples being the beutiful house on page four. The Farragut clubhouse on page thirteen. The moderate cottage on page thirty one and the houses following to page thirty eight. While others have only one or two floors plans provided.

This could use a sequal to correct this defect and provide additional buildings for reader's enjoyment.

4 out of 5 stars A colorful celebration of Victorian homes.......2001-05-23

"Victorian House Designs in Authentic Full Color," edited by Blanche Cirker, is a visually delightful tribute to a memorable era in home architecture. This volume reprints plates from "Scientific American--Architects and Builders Edition," originally appearing from 1885 to 1894.

The book contains floor plans and elevations of both stand-alone houses and connected homes. If you love the fanciful vocabulary of Victorian architecture, you will find all of your favorite features on display here: eyebrow dormers, circular towers, covered piazzas, cantilevered balconies, complex roof lines, clustered fireplaces, Palladian windows, and much, much more.

The only drawback to the book is that some house elevations are not accompanied by floor plans; a few others are only accompanied by the plan of a single floor. But overall, this is a richly detailed celebration of some truly beautiful homes. If you are a student of Victorian home architecture, this book is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars A BREATH-TAKING WALK INTO A TIME LONG GONE.......2000-08-30

Here is an amazing collection of victorial architectural buildings from the 1800s taken mostly from the New York Tri-State area. The full color three dimensional views given by these plates allow one to experience a sense of the real thing as it had been. The floor plans with scale dimensions can even help to wonders to the memory in understanding these magnificent works. It is also quite detailed and useful for someone who may even wish to reproduce any of these buildings! Even if you don't have any intention of reproducing an entire victorian building, there are certain styles that you can copy for your own home or farmhouse etc. This book gets my full recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic.......1998-04-05

If you are looking for explicit instructions on how to build a Victorian House this may not be the book for you, BUT, if you LOVE Victorian houses as much as I do, this is definitely the book for you!

This wonderful book features page after page, in FULL COLOR excellent, detailed drawings of these marvelous, period residences! And includes the floor plan of the houses.

Frankly I found the book a pure delight! Many of the houses are featured in a natural setting with a lawn and trees,

I would have preferred people not to be featured in the pictures, but that is just a personal preference..

The small figures are well done and are dressed in period clothing.

I greatly enjoyed this book. It is the kind of picture book that I will be looking at over and over.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, yet Informative.......1997-08-14

We ordered this book to give us ideas for building our own house in the grand old Victorian style. There are not instructions in this book, but it offers good illustrations, as well as floor plans for most of the houses pictured. Because the drawings are clear, they give a good idea of how some of the building was done, so it's possible to replicate them. We found it very helpful. The book is not technical, so it's entertaining for the average person to look at. The pictures are charming and enjoyable to browse through. The houses pictured are real, working houses that were built years ago. Through the floor plans, you also get an idea of the Victorian lifestyle. It really is a wonderful book to add to your library. It is a soft cover book

Book Description

In our industrialized society, it is often difficult to imagine how the objects around us are made. How, for example, are triple spirals put into the stem of a wine glass or table tops inlaid with whole landscapes of semi-precious stones? This unique dictionary is devoted to the fascinating materials and techniques used in the decorative arts. Materials range from the exotic to the most basic, from rare stones found only in the mountains of Badakshan, unsavory animal products, and the ground bodies of South American insects to ones as common as sand, clay, and lime.

Compiled by a team of experts, each with an intimate knowledge of his or her subject, the entries are written in clear, accessible language and supplemented by numerous photographs and drawings. Each core material (glass, ceramics, textiles, paper, plastics, leather, metal, stone, wood, and paint) is covered from its raw state through any processing or preparation to various craft stages and finally, to any surface finishing.

Traditionally, the kind of information found in these pages has been passed on from craftsman to craftsman or confined to highly specialized books, and even common terms are often misunderstood. This dictionary makes the subject accessible to all--from art and architectural historians, curators, collectors, restoration specialists, artists, and museum staff to decorators, aficionados, and those who enjoy watching Antiques Roadshow. In short, this book is for all those who are intrigued by the materials and techniques used to create the beautiful objects that surround us.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for all art library reference collections.......2001-01-05

Over a thousand entries in this illustrated dictionary provide extensive descriptions and details for glass, ceramics, textiles, paint and other media; all designed to enhance a technical understanding of decorative arts materials. Having all this reference material under one cover eliminates the needs for numerous titles covering the basics and makes it easy to cross-reference materials or techniques in the field as a whole. Highly recommended for art library collections.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars One of the first bodymod books I bought yeeeeears ago.......2004-02-20

The Customised Body is worth having in your collection. Though it is mainly pictures without any major content at all - it can sometimes just be reassuring to have it there among the more informative books to read over 'your own' thoughts and opinions of those who are likeminded on certain aspects of bodily appearance.
It is also very good for those who are just 'getting into' body modification and is a good starting point for those who wish to understand more about it from the outside.
The pictures are beautiful. Worth a buy but not a 'must have'.

4 out of 5 stars Human pinstriping, wallpaper and remodelling.......2003-01-03

A fantastic collaboration between Ted Polhemus (frequent contributor to the UK publication bodyart) and Housk Randall (photographer extraordinaire). What do you define as body art? This book covers tattooing, piercing, scarification, branding, hair dressing (head and pubic) and shaving, finger and toe nails, body building, plastic surgery and gender identity. The catalog is extensive but still retains a warm, intimate feeling. The portraits are sepia tone, showing many variations on what it is to be individual.

Good for the beginner as this volume will provide an excellent overview of body art. Valuable for the collector due to the quality of the portraits and breadth of body art depicted, supported by the personal and intelligent commentary.

4 out of 5 stars Apprentice Body Mods look here........2001-11-26

This book is a nice edition to anyones coffee table if your into tattoo's, piercing, masks and boots etc.If you're a novice stepping into this world for the first time then this would be a good starting point. Every section of photo's has an introduction explaining histories and psychologies on the subject. Each model gives a brief description of themselves and why they are into what they do and the rest is left up to the voyeur (reader).Once you have looked at this then you will want to look at more. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of pictures, a mixture of personal opinions and facts.......2001-07-23

It contains mainly information on bodypainting, tattooing, scarification, bodypiercing, gender transformation, masks and other forms of appearance manipulation. it has big clear pictures and personal comments from each person photographed. It's a very nice book to look through it doesnt have a large focus on writing as I wanted. It includes a mixture of personal opinion and actual facts. My main reason in buying the book was because I am interested in body piercing and I was disapointed that that only 12 pages were specifically focused on the subject. It does not give the "why you should not do it" lecture but looks at it in an anthropological view point. Looks at at reasons why people do it, how they feel when pierced and the non western tribes, eg Amazon. I find it disapointing that All pictures are in black and white. I was also disapointed that a lot of the book contains material on costumes, different hair and shoe styles which do not interest me at all. Even so for a person who is interested in them I would think that it is a book that they would enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A chronicle of bodies by design rather than by chance.......2001-04-05

This book does an excellent job of documenting the ways in which people are remaking their bodies to their own specifications rather than those of their birth. The text is well-written, and the photos are technically and artistically pleasing. As a body art enthusiast and a fan of Housk Randall-Goddard, I highly recommend this one.

                    Book Description

Examining the lighter side of librarianship, this book presents a combination of outrageously funny cartoons, commentary, and wit. Globally known as Biblia, the Warrior Librarian, Amanda Credaro has teamed with cartoonist Peter Lewis and produced a book that expands on her award winning web site, Warrior Librarian Weekly, the product of many years of experience in librarianship. Equally applicable to all types of libraries, the work offers humorous advice, typical situations and dilemmas, and helpful examples that will be appreciated by anyone who has ever worked in a library. The book features four major sections:
                  • Becoming a Librarian
                  • Working in the Library
                  • Diversions for Librarians
                  • The Ultimate Challenge: School Librarianship Highlights include:
                  • Self Defense for Librarians
                  • Rhyming Dictionary of Librarianship
                  • Applying for a Library Job
                  • Constitutional Amendments for Library Users
                  • Management Models for Library Administration
                  • And many more An additional section features a glossary of library terms, abbreviations, professional associations, and other resources.

                    5 out of 5 stars What a great book!.......2003-04-26

Everyone who has ever used a library should get this book - not just librarians. Even the back cover is funny. People will say "he's just a kid" (I'm 16) and "what would he know"? But I'm telling you - I KNOW what's funny, and this book IS too, too hilarious.

I never know that forwards and introductions could be like the ones in this book. My librarian never told me that even title pages could be used for more than just breaking up sections.

If you're looking for something really boring, you should NOT buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars What a lot of fun!.......2003-04-22

This book won't suit everyone - you need a sense of humor, and at least a little knowledge about libraries to fully appreciate the dry wit.

                    Love the great cartoons, too!
