Customer Reviews:
Lots of good Photos for a Modern Look.......2007-06-08
Very thick book of photos, looks more like a text book. If you are looking for ideas to redo a very very old bathroom or creating a very modern bathroom, this book would probably help. It's not very helpful for the more traditional bathrooms that most people are utilizing today.
disappointed.......2007-03-21
Buying this book I was looking for some ideas to decorate my bathrooms. I did not find a single one in the book. This book is for those who like minimalism.
500 beautiful pictures of unusual bathrooms.......2007-02-04
These are all designer bathrooms. they are mostly (all?) european. Every bathroom is elegant. Every bathroom is different.
Sourcing is very light and a lot of the work is custom ($$$), but there is a list of designer websites at the end.
I'm using these ultimate books to communicate to my architects what kinds of things I want, not as a guide to which kind of kohler fixtures to buy. It's ideal for my use, less useful as a fixture buying guide.
Book Description
At once a fount of ideas and a practical resource, The Bathroom Book provides a peek into some of the most attractive, functional, and original bathrooms across the country, along with guidance on how anyone can create a useful yet aesthetically pleasing space. There's also expert discussion of the newest hardware, appliances, and materials available today. Customer Reviews:
Good resource.......2006-11-18
I am about to totally gut my master bathroom and increase the size by incorporating two adjacent closets. It will still be on the small side but I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book covers the very small to the grandiose in size and style. The author discusses practical considerations when choosing each component of the bathroom and highlights common mistakes and misconceptions. There are lots of ideas and a selection of floor plans and whilst you cannot expect any of them to be tailor made for your house, they are a valuable resource to build upon. I would recommend this book if you are thinking of redesigning your bathroom.
Book Description
Ultimate Guide to Bathrooms helps readers add value to their homes by adding a new bathroomwhether they are remodeling an existing bath or buildingone from the floor up. Homeowners will find inspirational information on layout and design, but most of the book covers the hand-on parts of the projects, including adding new tubs and showers, vanities and sinks, and installing flooring and other finishes. Over 60 easy-to-follow photo sequences demonstrate the most popular projects, including the basics of plumbing and electrical work. Homeowners can use the book to do the entire project or pick the parts that interest them.

Do it yourself.......2007-06-14
This is a very clear manual to understand how the built works, step by step. But I wanted a book about bathrooms design, so it doesn't solve to me.
Book Description
The most thorough guide to watercolor materials and techniques ever assembled in a single volume, this is the book for anyone working with watercolors, from beginners to experienced artists looking to develop more professional skills. Starting with a comprehensive, up-to-date review of the tools and techniques required to master the art of watercolor, the book then presents detailed lessons in basic drawing skills. Design concepts are explored: line and shape, light and dark, perspective, and composition. All the major watercolor painting techniques are shown: methods for laying washes, preserving white areas, glazing, establishing form, creating textural effects, lifting color, masking, and using resists. With color the driving force behind the author's whole approach to painting and his distinctive "organic" handling of the medium, color theories and strategies are clearly explained and applied to a wide range of subjects-still life, figures, landscapes, and architecture-some of which pair watercolors with other mediums such as gouache, pastel, and collage. An ongoing reference source, this is a book that watercolorists will turn to again and again for guidance.

If wishes were fishes..........2007-09-27
I wish I would have bought this book before I bought the supplies I did. I know that I would have saved a lot of guesswork and helped form my style faster and more satisfactorily. I am an amateur painter and will always be, so cost effectiveness is an issue. Even though I have brushes and stuff that I will not use (probably) I have the feeling with this book that I have an instructor at hand. Thanks guys!
The Watercolor Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artists.......2007-07-13
After reading several books about watercolor, I found this book to be the best watercolor book on the market. It is the clarity and thoroughness of the explanations that make this such a valuable resource. I particularly found the section on color theory helpful. This is not a book with a few scattered tips against a background of gorgeous pictures of the artist's work. Rather, it is a master teacher reaching out to all levels of learners as he takes the mystery and confusion out of doing watercolors. If you were only going to buy one book about watercolor--this is the book!!
The Watercolor Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artists
Helpful.......2006-09-09
I was recommended this book by a professor to use as my guide in an Independent Study in watercolors. I don't have any other to compare it to, so I'm just writing what I got out of it.
It has very good descriptions about types and brands of paints, papers, and brushes to start out with. There are also some chapters dealing with general composition and color theory.
I was more interested in techniques though, which I thought Dewey covered well. As a newcomer to watercolors, I was introduced to different types of washes, layering, lifting techniques, etc. I really liked the mixed media section which discusses laying watercolor with things like pastels or colored pencil.
It was nice to see a variety of work too. It's not all of Dewey's pictures (though I thought his stuff was pretty dang amazing).
Great for Beginning Watercolor and Art 101.......2005-10-06
I find this book great for beginners as it emphasizes the fundamentals of art elements and techniques for any painting or drawing medium. I found myself understanding more of the concepts I was already familiar with and I also learned much about watercolor's relation to elements of art. I really love the way he explains color and how watercolor is especially perfect for expressing color more than other types of painting. I also love seeing the step-by-step process of how he achieves the end result of each painting and concept he's discussing. It gives detailed instructions but allows you to imagine and create unique paintings, as well. He also hints about the standards of watercolor techniques and basics, such as saying how wet on wet is good for the organic look or adding too much color removes light since watercolor is a subtractive process. Great book, and I read it cover to cover, taking notes along the way. Very basic.
Beginners must take a look at this book.......2004-12-17
I primarily wanted a book full of watercolor pictures by a contemporary artist plus instructions on how some of them are made. I had settled on about 3-5 books of which I intended to buy only one. Took a drive to Barnes and Noble, saw them all and I must say I was impressed by this one. Watercolor aficionados would have mostly heard of this author and artist. Amazing collection of pictures of not only the artist but his own selection of watercolor art from other major works with illustrative details of those art work. The only drawback I notice is that the details are restricted to current context and not much is said about that picture. I would have appreciated that kind of description. This is definitely an error which the author might want to take up in his next edition. Else... this book has great tips and instructions. When a learning artist thinks, "Damn it... how do I get that effect ?". This is a book that can be confidently consulted. Anyone looking for encyclopedic details on what the watercolor is all about and wishes to learn it all and get all the 3 credits from his/her couch from just one book aint going nowhere. This book is a superb reference. I guess the author did what he wanted to do. I did buy this book. B&N is $6 costlier but amazon charges that extra for shipping and it takes time.
Book Description
Unrivaled in scope, this encyclopedic reference on the most versatile of all painting mediums is an excellent tool to help both beginning and seasoned artists produce their best work in acrylics.
With its great flexibility, acrylic paint can mimic the appearance of oils, tempera, and watercolors in unique ways, each method pictured in a separate step-by-step demonstration. The author also examines the use of acrylics with airbrush, sculptural, and printing techniques-even three-dimensional relief painting and collagraphy printing methods are included-and how several of these different creative processes can be integrated successfully in one composition with ink, pencil, charcoal, and pastel. Inspiring examples of representational and abstract subjects are depicted throughout, and a complete survey of all the latest acrylic materials covers the best paint brands, painting mediums, supports, varnishes, brushes, knives, and palettes.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2006-08-14
This book gives a really good intro into acrylics for beginners. I've dabbled in acrylics, but the info in this book gave me the why as well as the how to different techniques. It's absolutely a beginner's book, but very thorough on the basics.
Excellent.......2006-06-16
I found this book just as I was beginning to paint. It helped me confirm that it was acrylics, rather than some other medium, that I wanted to use; and it gave me great instruction to get me going. I have subsequently read other painting-technique books (some excellent, others not) and I still think that, as a general discussion of acrylics, this book is perhaps the best I've seen. It has beautiful paintings as examples of what can be accomplished in acrylics.
I was probably a bit stingy in giving only 4 stars, but I feel that, on a very few points, there might have been more detail or elaboration. Still, overall, I know of no better book for anyone new to acrylics--indeed it continues to be a favorite of mine. I recommend this book together with the website of Golden Acrylics; those two resources might be all you will need to educate yourself about the use and manipulation of acrylic paints and acrylic mediums.
Great for the Beginning Acrylic Painter.......2004-12-03
Very informative with regard to brands of paints, brushes, mediums, and surfaces. Has recommendations for your beginning palate, brush set, etc. Expands on technique with demonstrations. REALLY like this book and glad I bought it.
A good beginning.......2003-08-19
I recommend this for the beginner level acrylic painter. What you need to know to get started with a lot of great product information.
Everything you need to know to get started........2003-04-16
This book is really quite excellent. Using clear, concise and friendly language Mr. Shears starts with a short but invaluable description of what's out there as far as paints, brushes, etc., comnpares them and suggests what you need to get started. After spending an hour in the brushes aisle frozen from indecision and sensory overload, it was a huge help to have someone say 'Buy, this and this to get started.'
The chapters are well defined and the pictures are generously distributed. My only criticism (hence 4 out of 5 stars) is that it would have been nice to see a more diverse representation of artwork. I understand the book may be somewhat of a platform for Mr. Shears, but i would have benefitted and enjoyed seeing different styles represented. There are a few, but the majority is Mr. Shears own work.
That aside, after looking at MANY books on the subject, i wholeheartdly endorse this one.

comprehensive!.......2000-01-08
An outstanding book for the watercolor enthusiast. Dewey's chapters cover materials, subject matter and technique that even the advanced watercolorist can learn from. The book is a handy item to help both the practicing artist and teacher. Not so much a step by step study, but rather information that can be applied to the artists individual style and subject matter.
a watercolor classic.......1999-02-13
a comprehensive, knowledgeable, concise survey of watercolor technique and the art theory necessary to watercolor painting. some essential techniques, such as wet-on-wet washes, receive a one-page treatment that encapsulates all text, illustrations, and photos for that topic; others are repeated as themes throughout the discussion. the demonstration paintings are simple and inviting for a beginner to imitate, yet all of them -- my favorites are niagra falls, the japanese arch and the still life on a rug -- are masterfully composed and build from value sketches and compositional studies to show how to think a painting through. the section on color theory is the most coherent and pointed i have ever seen. the sections on materials (paints, brushes, papers, by type and by brand) are excellent too. a marvellous book, a classic of its kind.
An Essential Tool for the beginning or serious Watercolorist.......1999-01-22
David Dewey's straight forward and concise writing makes this among the best Watercolor references available today. I own over 100 watercolor books and this is one of the four I reference continually.
An excellent and very dense informative learning tool........1998-06-25
This book may take years to get through-there are so many useful exercises and projects, but it's impossible to come out of it without knowing a great deal about watercolor and all it's myriad possibilities. Through this book I found Dewey, teaching at the National Academy in NYC and I have been studing with him ever since...for four plus years,so of course I am biased, but I feel this book is a classic of technique and an essential to anyone serious about learning this quite difficult medium.
Customer Reviews:
Very disapointing.......2000-11-15
I waited the arrival of this book with a lot of expectative, but it's very disapointing. It's very childish and give not many ideas at all. To me, the worst thing is that it works with fabrics that you only can find if you are at USA; it doesn't help you to make really new creations. I'd like a book that could teach a person from everywhere how to make great creative scrapbooks, and not this one.
Excellent.......1999-04-21
I wanted a good basic book on scrapbooking. In the meantime, I found this book is the basis of a PBS program of the same title. I would highly recommend it for a beginner, or even for the experienced scrapper. I refer to it time and again for ideas.
comprehensive, varied approach to modern scrapbooking.......1999-02-25
I have several scrapbooking idea/resource books & this is one of my favorites. It covers the basics comprehensively which is essential for the beginner and refreshing for the advanced enthusist. The chapters are inclusive of most all scrapbooking 'occassions.' Heritage, Home & Family, Cropping Parties, Holidays, Babies, Sports & Leisure, Weddings, etc... The techniques are suprisingly varied because of the many contributors, so all the layouts do not look the same! Included in each chapter is an appropriate font example. Near the end there is also a photo gift chapter. If you're only planning to buy one idea/resource book for your hobby right now, this would be the one to get. I turn to it more than all the others.
Great general scrapping info.......1999-02-03
This is one of the best books I've come across on scrapbooking. It won't overwhelm beginners or bore more advanced scrappers. It has a variety of helpful hints, loads of layouts and some creative lettering by Carol Snyder of EK Success.
Book Description
"An American storyteller, like Ray Bradbury, like O. Henry."Neil Gaiman
With an unparalleled eye for stories and expressive illustration, Will Eisner, the master and pioneer of American comics art, presents graphic fiction's greatest celebration of the Big Apple. No illustrator evoked the melancholy duskiness of New York City as expressively as Eisner, who knew the city from the bottom up. This new hardcover presents a quartet of graphic works (New York, The Building, City People Notebook, and Invisible People) and features what Neil Gaiman describes as "tales as brutal, as uncaring as the city itself." From ancient buildings "barnacled with laughter and stained with tears" to the subways, "humorless iron reptiles, clacking stupidly on a webbing of graceful steel rails," Will Eisner's New York includes cameo appearances by the author himself; several new illustrations sketched by Eisner, posthumously inked by Peter Poplaski; and three previously unpublished "out-takes"a treasure for any Eisner fan, and sure to become a collectible. Introduction by Neil Gaiman.
Customer Reviews:
Start spreading the news........2007-09-06
This book collects four of Will Eisner's comic books. I hesitate to use the term "graphic novels" because these aren't novels, they are short stories. Some of them are very short, being one page vignettes. The books collected are New York: The Big City, The Building, City People Notebook and Invisible People. Will Eisner was truly one of the geniuses of the comic book artform. This book tells the stories of regular city dwellers. Some of their stories are funny, some of them are tragic. But they are all worth reading. Highly recommended.

Will Eisner, the Elvis of comics, loved watching the people around him and reporting on their quirks. City People Notebook is a collection of short pieces--call them graphic poems--grouped thematically under the headings Time, Space, and Smell. He captures the essences of these qualities as experienced by urban folk (even smell, a tough literary nut, cracks easily for him). His graphic poems are strongly reminiscent of the free-form pieces from the old Mad magazine, with a greater depth and maturity. Sometimes goofy, sometimes haunting, and usually insightful, Eisner's City People Notebook is a wise guide to the weird world of the urbanite. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
An extraordinary and classic graphic novel celebrating the Big Apple, from the master of American comics art.
With an unparalleled eye for stories and expressive illustration, Will Eisner, the master and pioneer of American comics art, presents one of his renowned celebrations of the Big Apple. No illustrator evoked the melancholy duskiness of New York City as expressively as Eisner, who knew the city from the bottom up.
City People Notebook contains character sketches and timeless snapshots of the eccentric denizens of the American city that perfectly capture Eisner's genius and powers of observation.
Customer Reviews:
A "City People" Review.......2000-06-12
This is a sequal to the "New York, The Big City" book and it deals with city living via three aspects; Time, Space and Smell. Again it brings life and heart to an otherwise seemingly cold environment. Another graphic novel (essay may be more precise) by Eisner reccomendable to all, packed with classic artwork and humanism.
