This book is an excellent how to for the mural artist in training. The authors explain composition as well as technique. Illustrations are to the point. It is an excellent teaching book.

This is an excellent book for learning techniques for painting both sky and sea. Insightful for the beginner with tips about what qualities and subject matter make a Trompe L'Oeil painting both believable and timeless.

If you are a mural painter, you will gain a lot of knowledge from this book. It has many step by step instructions along with photos of completed work. I particularly liked the instructions on painting water.

I'm glad I bought this book. It has beautiful artwork and gives me ideas for my house. It also explains how to bring the room into the painting so that it looks like you could walk into the painting.
The only thing that I didn't like about the book is how they refer to murals that are not illusionistic as 'naive art'. That bothered me because everyone has their own style of painting and not every mural is meant to look like you can walk into it. It was kind of a pompous remark in my opinion.
Overall, the book has beautiful paintings, a lot of information on how they did the paintings, and is very inspiring.

Hardly what I would call painting..........2007-07-20
If you are looking for a good book based on a wide variety of techniques, this book is a handbook. If you are looking for a book that showcases wonderful artwork by competent artists, this is a good book. If you are a painter who wants to learn how to paint feathers or fur, this is not a good book.
The preliminary chapters of this book are all about drawing. Having studied, art, yes, we need to learn to draw before we can learn to paint. But the title of this book is _Keys to PAINTING Fur and Feathers_.
There follows different ideas on how to capture light on white fur, how to paint patterns, and other useful techniques, but I do feel they could have been explained better.
And then we get back to the issue of painting. Pen and ink drawing is drawing, not painting. Colored pencil is drawing, not painting. Pastels are, well, pastels, not painting.
For the artist that likes to experiment in different mediums, this is an excellent resource book. For those that are into acrylics and watercolors, you'll find some nice things in here. But I think the title is very misleading, because much of the book does not focus on actual 'painting'.

This book is excellent for anyone who paints wildlife. It gives detailed illustrations of how to paint every type of fur and feathers in all mediums, can really recommend this book to any wildlife artist.

This book is full of beautiful and inspiring pictures painted in many mediums including oils, acrylics and watercolours. although this book is a beautiful book i only gave it 4 stars because it doesnt really spend alot of time focusing on how to actually achieve the effects that the various pictures in the book portray.
Pastelists Take Heed.......2000-09-14
Quick summary of the book topics: Chapter 1) how to draw some animals in pencil and charcoal Chapter 2) painting fur textures Chapter 3) painting feather textures Chapter 4) detail area focusing on such things as how a bird flies, how they grip a branch, tail fur and feathers, eyes, etc. Chapter 5) Painting Demonstrations
Although this book is advertised as "In All Mediums" and specifically mentions pastel in the jacket text by the editors, this is very misleading. If you are an acrylic, watercolor or colored pencil painter, this book is right up your alley. If you are a pastelist, think twice before you buy.
The book contains a some wonderful paintings, usually unrelated to the text, and several of them are in pastel. However, the *only* place they even talk or even *use* pastel is in the "Painting Demonstrations" chapter. The demonstration is called "How to Paint a Raccon in Pastel". The raccoon is 3/4 posed and half in his den -- you can only see the raccoon's head and part of his side!
Overall, it's a great book for acrylic, watercolor and colored pencil, and it can be used by painters in other mediums. However, if you are a pastelist and looking for a book that would either cover pastel thoroughly, or at least fairly (when compared to the time spent on the other mediums), forget it. Don't expect to find any pastel-oriented help here -- there isn't any worth speaking of.

During my language courses, I include the "unspoken language", which makes up about 50% of Italian communication!!! Hand-gestures are fun and actually have specific messages that don't need any spoken words. This book is fun, but unfortunately you cannot see the movement, which is essential to so many of these gestures. Thus, leaving many of them unusable.

i'm not sure why i'm the first to comment that this book is 80% universal body language (demonstrated by colorful italian characters)/20% actual italian body language/hand gestures. if you want to laugh at 'translations' of a man holding his stomach and grimacing ("italian" for "i ate like a pig!"), or holding his nose ("italian" for "you stink!") then buy this book. if you don't know what a woman rolling her eyes with a dreamy expression means (in "italian" --"he's a hunk") or how to say "don't touch me" in "italian" (point your ever-handy wooden spoon at someone and flare your eyes), then get this book. the few actual italian hand gestures are ok but there aren't many.

Duane Michals is a humanist of the first order. His concerns are not unlike those of Walt Whitman, who seems to have played a major role in Michals' development as an artist and thinker. The format of this book is elegant, simple, and touching. It will come as no surprise that his 'Questions' for which he poses no answers are those same questions we all ponder, alone, in the still of darkness, in the solitude of nature.
What makes Duane Michals pertinent is his lack of posturing as an artist. One of the drivers for this portfolio is to continue his multiple studies of a few beautiful people. Adding the written word or phrase in response to one of the 'Questions' at times is additive, at times superfluous, at times pedestrian, but at all times honest. The photographs are his usual beautiful images, some touched with items, others reliant on the simple beauty of his models.
Books such as this are warm companions for lonely times, times of loss, times for rejuvenation. And isn't that true for all of art? Recommended. Grady Harp, August 05
Mysterious/Obvious, Profound/Vapid, Etc., Like Life Itself.......2001-12-14
Michals has produced a work that is full of contrasts, ranging from mysterious to obvious, from profound to vapid, from sad to funny, much like life itself. The "questions" of the title are (without the question marks): What is/are beauty, the universe, magic, trust, language, luck, happiness, pleasure, consciousness, the mystery of the Sphinx, dreams, memory, youth, old age, time, humor, grief, desire, love, music, God, life, death, nothing? and Who am I?. In the middle of these is a section on "the seven ages of man." Each concept is explored with black & white photograph(s) and poetry. For example, for "grief" there is a series of six photos showing a man reading a letter, looking at a picture, and then holding his head in his hands, and the sentence "grief is the unconsolable melancholy of loss." I do not feel that the photography is Michal's best, and the poetry sometimes borders on bathetic. Nevertheless, I recommend this book as a strong example of one of the most original artists of our time.
Some Things to Think About.......2001-11-20
Duane's back . . . and he still has plenty to say (even under the guise of asking questions, he can't stop giving away the answers). There are plenty of new poems here, but the best thing about the book is that it features more of his signature series. Telling stories with these series has been and remains Duane Michals strong point.
