excellent and very comprehensive. as a layman i feel jenkins has a knack for imparting his vast knowledge on slate roofs.

2 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted to know about slate roofs but were afraid.......2007-03-31

I changed my review because it wasn't fair to the author. This is a complete book on slate roofs from mining slate to historic buildings. It is one of the few books devoted to slate roofs still in print. It tells you everything from installing to the care and repair of the roof. Slate is the most expensive roofing material, the tools are expensive, it is very difficult to find someone to repair a slate roof, and it needs to be checked/ maintained every year. Despite this, we wanted to repair our roof because it is very attractive. When I was unable to find someone to repair our roof, I went on line and found Joe Jenkins site. Later I found his book at Amazon. Although the book is complete, it is very difficult for a lay person to read though.

5 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail of Slate Roof Information.......2007-02-23

Wow! This book is everything I've been looking for since I purchased a 110-year-old house with its original slate roof. I soon found out that there was virtually no one with a good working knowledge of slate rooves to be found. We are facing some fairly serious maintenance issues now and when I ran across this book, I hoped for the best. I was right. This has everything you need to work on your own roof or find someone who can, what kind of slate you have, and proper methodologies for putting down as well as repairing slate. It has an amazing breadth, and has beautiful photos of some historical slate rooves, as well as excellent line drawings of repair techniques. This book is for anyone interested in the wonderful slate roof, whether or not you own one. My husband was astonished to find that exactly what he had needed to know was now at his fingertips, with complete instructions. We've had our house for five years now, and finally feel confident about caring for our beautiful old roof.

This is simply the best book out there if you plan on doing anything with slate.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT Resource!.......2006-11-02

I purchsed this great book through Amazon, and was pleasantly suprised by its depth. I would highly encourage anyone who is working with or considering a slate roof to acquire this comprehensive reference!

    Book Description

Action is an integral component of manga. Manga without action lacks impact. Yet, some find themselves at a loss as to how to portray speed and dramatization techniques. This book teaches such beginning artists techniques used by professional Japanese manga artists. A must-have!

5 out of 5 stars Nice ref book.......2006-12-19

I have to say, when I got this book I was very happy with it. This book demonstrates how to develope shoujo characters correctly by giving you examples of hair, eyes, and face structure. It also shows you how to correctly draw hair on the character head. Inside this book also touch on backgrounds, 1,2,& 3 point perspective, and tips on writing an interesting story. If you ask me, this book has its bases covered. If you are looking for a book that helps you with any of the things that I stated above, then this is a must buy! Another plus is that this book is kid friendly. It doesn't show any nudity at all! I think this book would be ideal for someone who is a beginner (someone who gets the concept of drawing manga slightly well.)

4 out of 5 stars For those interested in Shoujo Manga.......2004-11-23

Though some information is a rehash from other HTDM editions, thankfully, there are some that are new and very informative including common anatomy drawing mistakes. Chapters 3&4 (How to Create Stories and How to Create Manga Manuscripts) are very useful considering it is generally explained briefly in other books. The first two chapters focused on characters and backgrounds.

This book would be best for the person interested in focusing on shoujo manga. It teaches a bit of everything from anatomy, backgrounds, toning, how to put together a story, paneling, and putting it all together on paper.

This is a good starter book much like the first edition of this series (sans more explicit drawings) as it encompasses everything in the manga process but is half useful if you already have other books in the HTDM series.

      3 out of 5 stars Wondeful but.........2004-02-11

I really enjoyed this book and thought it was extreamly helpful. I did start with this book even though it was number 5... if i had to choose again i would probably have started with somthing a little more detail on the basic structures and less on details. Although i found this book very helpful with drawing hair, bodys, and backrounds when i got up to them. I also think that this book is a little more like realistic drawings.. its still alot like manga but the style isent really present time manga.

5 out of 5 stars Great for starters.......2003-12-06

The book gives a very detail way how to draw manga characters. It shows you how to draw faces, expressions, hair, body, perspective, clothes in general. Even it gives how to create the comic strips.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but be aware of the limitations.......2003-04-09

This is basically a good introduction to most of the technical information needed in creating a shoujo ("girls'") manga, and most of the information can be applied to any kind of manga. Two things you need to keep in mind, though: 1) none of the art in this book is really professional-level quality, and 2) it is a direct translation from Japanese, and does not take into account the requirements for printing a book anywhere other than Japan. The book (like the whole "Society for the Study of" series) was created by enthusiastic amateurs, but the art is both out of date and sub-par. Look at current shoujo manga to get an idea of what current standards are like. An example of the poor qality of the art can be found on page 6, in the example of a face shown from below. Here the artist makes the mistakes almost all beginning manga artists make. Anyone can see that it is unnatural and ugly. If you are planning to have your work printed outside Japan, check with the printer about paper size, margins, the printability of screen tone (often called "zipatone" in English), lettering, etc. The final chapter ("How to Create Manga Manuscripts") is written for people planning to submit their work to a Japanese manga publisher. If you're going to have your own work printed, you'll have to do the lettering yourself, and this book doesn't tell you how to do that. The translation seems largely accurate, but is stiff and awkward in many places. It would have been nice if the publisher had consulted with artists accustomed to working in the English-speaking world and adjusted the content to better suit that audience. Nonetheless, if you've never drawn manga or comics before and are eager to try, this book is a very good place to begin. (By the way, I teach young apsiring cartoonists at the Department of Comic Art, Kyoto Seika University, Japan, which I hope qualifies me to make these judgements.)

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Very helpful!!.......2005-02-14

Overall, this book is about teaching you (the reader) how to make Manga. And nope, it won't help you with creating a story, this book would be prefered to those that already have a story made in their thoughts and need some tips on drawing it all on paper. The chapters of this book consists of:

Chapter 1: Drawing techniques and Process
This chapter only shows you how the drawing process works, like sketching the drawing, then inking... The process!

Chapter 2: Tool Selection and Use
Of course, this chapter shows some of the basic tools that would be useful to make your manga with. If you have problems with choosing the right materials, this is the perfect chapter for you!

Chapter 3: How to draw Different Characters
Like it says, it shows you how to draw different characters (from young people to old people, how to make your characters different from each other...)

      Chapter 4: Background and Perspective
It shows you tips on perspective, and backgrounds. They should've put more info in this sections though, since I hear alot these days that everyone has difficulty with backgrounds, and of course, perspective.

      Chapter 5: Drawing in Panels
Finally... I have found this part of the book to be the most useful. Lots of tips on how to make very good panels in your manga.

What I found very fun with this book was that it was like some sort of manga, but it taught the reader techniques for drawing their very own mangas. This book was very entertaining, but it would've been more fun if it had more information, tips, tricks and stuff like that. I am glad to have bought this book!

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Drawing Book.......2005-01-12

A good drawing book for drawing Manga characters, but it is pretty beginning level. This is very good for learning from the start because of the level of details in the drawings. With the easy-to-understand drawings, you can feel confident that you can draw one manga character. In color and glossy paper. Nice, but wished this was longer.

The techniques used in manga for girls are not so widely used today that they have come to define modern manga techniques. They are indispensible for you to draw characters more realistically and to pay close attention to back grounds. This volume is a definitive compendium that reveals techniques in extraordinary detail and precision.

5 out of 5 stars need to use this edition which is completely updated.......2005-01-05

The only reason I am filing this review is that I want to correct a comment that is on this page (page reviewing the 8th edition of the book). An old review of the book has been placed on this page erroneously. It refers to the book's being out of date. It is referring to a much earlier edition of the book and was reviewing that edition of it. The book on this page is the latest edition, the 8th, published in August of 2004. I just used it myself this fall term of 2004, and will be teaching from it again this winter semester of 2005. It is completely updated. You will discover that if you buy earlier editions, also for sale on amazon, that they are out of date. I insist that my students use the 8th edition and made them return earlier ones. An out-of-date text is of little use in our classroom.

5 out of 5 stars Out of Date!.......1997-08-08

The text does a superb job of covering real estate law essentials in Ohio, however, there due to recent (1996) legislation, two of the largest and most important chapters are out of date and must be re-written!!! If anyone knows of an update or a way to contact the authors or the publisher, please write me at KRKost@ezo.net

"Lincoln said that, at fifty, a man gets the face he deserves. Whether Ohio, on reaching her 200th birthday as a state, has the face she deserves is another question." Thus muses award-winning nature writer John Fleischman in his opening of THE OHIO LANDS. Ian Adams' pictorial answer in 150 color photographs is an unequivocal yes. Adams portrays a subject that is ever young yet ever changing in her ageless beauty across the seasons and years.

            Book Description

It was one of Thoreau's great rules of life that any pond, or lake, or stream contains the reflections of the entire world within it--that one can see and know and feel more at one's own doorstep than hurried travels will ever reveal in the far corners of the earth. A place for sensing the wonder of the world could be any place, for all have shared a common journey that has made the earth our home. To listen from any spot is to hear the quiet echoes of a billion cycles around the sun. In A Place on the Glacial Till, Thomas Fairchild Sherman writes about the history of the life and land around his long-time home in Oberlin, Ohio, offering a quiet message that speaks to us wherever we are: that all time and nature abide within the rocks and soil, with connections, beauty, and meaning as deep as history and as broad as human understanding. The area surrounding Oberlin has a rich and varied past, and Sherman weaves together old and new findings from geology, archeology, and ecology to remind us of its elemental roots. Over the millennia this region of north central Ohio has been a barren, glacier-covered land mass; a sea bed teeming with marine life; the homeland of the Adena, Hopewell, and Erie peoples; a part of the Connecticut Western Reserve; and the home of a small, distinguished college dedicated to music and the arts and sciences. The land today holds all the wildernesses of its past, and all the dreams and aspirations of those who have lived upon it. Reminiscent of the meditative prose of Annie Dillard and the environmental writing of John McPhee, A Place on the Glacial Till recalls a multitude of studies of time and nature and joins them in a new appreciation of the land and its meaning for our lives.

5 out of 5 stars The best bioregional biography I've seen.......1999-10-08

Sherman's excellent book was recommended to me by a colleague while I was preparing to teach a college course in bioregional biographies, and it is clearly the best I've seen. His rendering of geological, botanical, and biological information is both lucid and lyrical, and--unlike David Raines Wallace, whose Klamath Knot is also a wonderful model of this sort of writing--Sherman needs no incidental narrative device to hold the layers of deep history together. Mr. Sherman is a gifted writer and naturalist, and A Place on the Glacial Till is clearly a classic of natural history writing.

4 out of 5 stars beautiful use of language pulls the reader into nature.......1998-12-31

The author manages to make his various topics (glaciers and their effects on our world here in Ohio, development of flora and fauna of the region through history, etc.)very accessible to the lay person. He has a sense of humour about nature and a beautifully descriptive eye.

              Book Description

The Scioto Marsh in Hardin County, Ohio, was once an immense swamp, teeming with vegetation and wildlife. It was drained in the 1880s to grow vegetables, most notably onions. For decades, hundreds of workers crawled across the fields, hunched over half-mile rows of onions, potatoes, and other crops grown on the tabletop-flat fields of black muck in the 18,000-acre basin.

A much-publicized labor strike erupted during the broiling, violent summer of 1934, breaking the monotony of field work for that season. But the marsh had already begun showing the signs of exploitation-the rich organic soil was evaporating in astounding, incalculable tonnage. Once as deep as a tall pioneer, the muck was now little more than a foot thick.

Unearthing the Land is a century's view of former natural diversity altered by the "progress" of agriculture. Here, in typically American fashion, are the people who migrated to this place to work, many seeking a better life than offered by the Kentucky coal mines; here, too, are the few who prospered. And here, within the modern context of environmental concerns, is the story of nature's will to retain primal tendencies which still haunt today's fields of carrots and grain crops.

Modern themes of national importance play throughout the story of the Scioto Marsh. From prehistory to the present, the marsh is a compelling backdrop for considering today's essential concerns about land use and environmental responsibility. AUTHOR BIO:Thomas A. Book Description

After almost two centuries of on-and-off resistance to white encroachment on Indian lands, a band of Ohio Indians attacked and almost destroyed the army of the infant U.S.A. The battle for the Indian village of Kekionga, unmentioned in any history textbook, stunned President Washington and Congress and provoked both a change in military policy and the first legislative investigation of an executive department under the Constitution. This history of the relations between Native Americans and European settlers, principally during the colonial and revolutionary periods, focuses on the clash of two very different civilizations in the struggle for control of the land. It also sets in world perspective the savagery of the French and Indian Wars, disposing of the myth that brutally inhumane treatment of the enemy was characteristic only of Indian fighting methods. Subsequent to the Indians' supression after Kekionga, government and private indifference to Indian rights and gross mistreatment persisted until the last quarter of the 20th century.

                4 out of 5 stars A good vivid introduction in Indian/white relations........1998-10-09

Wilbur Edel's book "Kekionga" is in fact not a detailed description of the worst defeat of the American army led by general St Clair against the Native Americans in the late 18th century. The story of the battle itself merely takes one page in this book. So people mainly interested in pure military history will not find a satisfactory answer. But I don't thing Edel, who is a Professor Emeritus of Political Science, intended to write a book focusing only on the military aspects of this dramatic battle , which is in fact not that well known in American history.

The author prefers a global approach of this battle which was the direct result of white settlers penetrating in the Ohio-lands of the Wabash Indian tribes after the American War of Independence.

Edel clearly explains the relation between Native Americans and their white opponents from the start of white colonisation untill the present. He indicates the role of the different European nations in the New World who played a important role in the Indian-white relations during the 18th and 19th century. So one can learn in fact each nation (European and Native American as well) had their own hidden political agenda. For example during the War of Independence, both Americans and English tried to use Native Americans for their cause. Indians tried to use them to obtain better trade-goods. Some tribes tried to form alliances with Europeans to protect their homelands from invasion of other Europeans. The author gives a clear inside in this processes which indicates that international politics in that period do not differ that much from the way international politics are run nowadays.

In a vivid description he brings back to life the voices of the people who played a decisive role in this confrontation. Fortunately he retains from giving too many details and keeps this book to the point. Nevertheless he is very accurate and each statement is linked to a bibliographical note.

I enjoyed reading this book, which gave me (as a European who is not that familiar with the American history) also a better understanding of the sometimes stressed relations between the American Federation and the individual States of the Union. In my opinion this book can be used as a standard introduction to understand the complex relationship between the Native Americans and the American Federation.

                Book Description

In this original and sensitive ethnography of frontier life, Elizabeth Perkins recovers the rhythms of warfare, subsistence, and cultural encounter that governed existence on the margins of British America. Richly detailed, Border Life captures the intimate perceptive universe of the men and women who colonized Kentucky and southern Ohio during the Revolutionary era.

In reconstructing the mental world of border inhabitants, Perkins draws on a pioneering source in oral history. In the 1840s, the Reverend John Dabney Shane conducted hundreds of interviews with surviving western settlers, gathering their recollections on topics ranging from food preparation to encounters with Native Americans. Although Shane's interviews have long been hailed as a rich, if complicated, source for western history, Perkins is the first scholar to consider them critically, as texts for cultural analysis.

Border Life also deepens our understanding of how ordinary people struggled to make sense of their own lives within the stream of history. Discovering a significant disjuncture between recorded memory and written history in accounts of the early frontier, Perkins shows how historians and popular authors reshaped the messy complexities of remembered experience into heroic—and radically simplified—conquest narratives.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent background book for genealogy.......2000-05-07

I bought this book because I understood that a few of my ancestors were quoted in it; as a genealogist, I look for every mention of my ancestors possible! But this book brought home the staggering (to me, I never said I was smart) fact that not all conflict between settlers and Native Americans took place on the plains. Many, many conflicts took place right here in the midwest, in Ohio, Michigan, etc. And this book provides an excellent description of the people and events of this period of settlement. It adds a dimension to my research, and is an fascinating study.

In 1785 lands of the Northwest Territory were offered for sale to the public. By 1800 four land offices were established and sales from the Zanesville office, which included tracts originally reserved for the Marietta and Steubenville offices and, more importantly, parts of the United States Military District, reserved for veterans of the Revolutionary War, form the basis of this volume. In addition, this volume also includes records from the Steubenville office for the period 1820-1840, the first twenty years of sales records having already been published.

In tabular format this volume has a complete list of 22,770 persons who bought land in central and east central Ohio between 1800 and 1840. Data includes the name of the purchaser (in alphabetical order), date of purchase, place of residence at the time of purchase, and the range, township, and section of the purchased land, thus enabling the researcher to ascertain the exact location of the ancestor's land see also Items 480 and 481).
