Book Description

In 1532, when Pizarro conquered Peru, the Inca realm was one of the largest empires on earth, graced by gold masterpieces, towns with great palaces and temples, and an impressive network of roads. But this glittering culture only obscured the rich and diverse civilizations that had preceded it: Chavin, Moche, Nazca, Tiwanaku, Huari, and Chimú. Described as a "masterly study" and an "outstanding volume" on its first publication, The Incas and Their Ancestors quickly established itself as the best general introduction to the cultures and civilizations of ancient Peru. Now this classic text has been fully updated for the revised edition. New discoveries over the last decade are integrated throughout. The occupation of Peru's desert coast can now be traced back to 12,000 BC and ensuing maritime adaptations are examined in early littoral societies that mummified their dead and others that were mound builders. The spread of Andean agriculture is related to fresh data on climate, and protracted drought is identified as a recurrent contributor to the rise and fall of civilizations in the Cordillera. The results of recent excavations enliven understanding of coastal Moche and Nazca societies and the ancient highland states of Huari and Tiwanaku. Architectural models accompanying burials provide fresh interpretations of the palaces of imperial Chan Chan, while the origins of the Incas are given new clarity by a spate of modern research on America's largest native empire. 225 b/w illustrations.

4 out of 5 stars ****.......2007-04-16

The book is written in elaborate English - not easy to read but very elegant. Although it is supposed to be an introduction it should be read at least two times to fertilize one's mind. Author present his vision of Peruvian prehistory in a "reversed" order. He begins with Incas (1/5 of the whole book) to continue with plethora of their ancestors. As a result a reader gets a nice patchwork of archaeological-based definitions and life-giving interpretations. Some out-of-date details are perhaps only in my edition (2001).

5 out of 5 stars Good background for a trip to Peru.......2007-01-17

If you are interested in understanding Incan civilization: its origins and antecedents, the economy that sustained it, and its interrelationship with the unique Andean environment, then this book is for you. I read it as background for a trip to Peru and it made the sites I saw much more interesting to be able to put them in a context. The first four chapters are a Historical Introduction followed by a fascinating analysis of how the complex Andean (Cordilleran) environment impacted native peoples, then chapters on Inca society and the Inca state. Subsequent chapters on earlier societies are less interesting and have more of a survey feel. This is not "popular history" - dumbed down and anecdotal; and some readers appear to have found it a difficult book. It has the feel of an upper level college history text (for me that is praise). I found it jargon free and easy to read.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I looked for.......2005-08-26

Before visiting Peru, I bought a few books on the history and archaelogy of the land, to prepare me for what I would see. After studying this book, my understanding of pre-Inca and Inca civilizations is still extremely lacunary. This book does not place the archaeological finds in a meaningful historical context. In lieu of history we are given an abstract of Inca legends - interesting but not enough. Surely more is known or can be extracted from the archeaological records! The relations between the various civilizations is skipped over. On the positive side is an attempt to explain some features of the andean civilizations in terms of the echology of the land.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2002-05-15

I use this book a great deal as a resource for research on ancient Peru. Although this book is not "made pretty" with lots of color photographs and has a textbook feel, it does contain a wealth of information and scholarship. It is a must read for anyone wanting to learn about the ancient cultures of Peru in depth.

5 out of 5 stars Ancestors more advanced than the Incas.......2001-02-01

It is a shame that THE INCAS has to be stressed to sell a book that is so good on their ancestors. In North Peru, for example, the Moche left a wealth of advanced (& colorful) information & technology skills of which Peru does not take advantage, especially in terms of tourism. See unitru.edu.pe/arq for the cultures of North Peru. We await the revised edition. Michael White & Clara Bravo, Trujillo Peru Tour Guides.

          Book Description

All artists are tired of persuading their nearest and dearest to look sad…look glad…look mad…madder…no, even madder…okay, hold it. For those artists (and their long-suffering friends), here is the best book ever. Facial Expressions includes more than 2,500 photographs of 50 faces—men and women of a variety of ages, shapes, sizes, and ethnicities—each demonstrating a wide range of emotions and shown from multiple angles. Who can use this book? Oh, only every artist on the planet, including art students, illustrators, fine artists, animators, storyboarders, and comic book artists. But wait, there's more! Additional photos focus on people wearing hats and couples kissing, while illustrations show skull anatomy and facial musculature. Still not enough? How about a one-of-a-kind series of photos of lips pronouncing the phonemes used in human speech? Animators will swoon—and artists will show a range of facial expressions from happy to happiest to ecstatic.

          5 out of 5 stars Facial Expressions.......2007-09-29

This is a wonderful resource for artists. It offers a variety of models with a wide range of expressions. I Highly reccommend it.

          5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTE NECESSITY!.......2007-09-19

I just recently started creating a webcomic and I never could have done it without this book. The expressions range from highly exaggerated to more subtle and, I promise you, will work for almost any expression you want to create. Also, many expressions are shot at multiple angles, making it much easier for me to create the exact image I am thinking of. Perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for drawing comics.......2007-08-23

I'd used this book often when drawing my manga. However do note that the facial expressions are mostly very exaggerated. When drawing my characters talking or just a gentle smile, I could not find reference from there.I'd to use a mirror. I hope there's a volume two with two people interacting with each other and different camera angles.

4 out of 5 stars Ummm a little disappointing great book.......2007-07-16

I think it's the only book right now which has addressed reference material for facial expressions. It's really useful, but professionals may get disappointed with the quality of some pictures and blurriness. It's not that all pictures are bad quality, but when you have such an amazing reference you ought to expect a lot and that's where this book is disappointing. But for sure this book will be useful for all beginners and probably higher level artists. For this price don't hesitate to buy if you really want a reference for facial expressions. Some people may not like the quality of the paper, but I think you should also consider the price.

4 out of 5 stars good drawing book.......2007-07-05

i thought the book was something different from what i ordered. but i guess its good for artists

          Book Description

Now you can draw from your own life model anytime you want without paying expensive models' fees! This handy volume contains over 600 detailed anatomical photographs for artists to study and draw from. Subjects included are male and female, and the models range in age from two years old to ninety years old. All together, seventeen different models were photographed, in the most useful and instructive poses for the artist. They are shown clothed and unclothed, full-figure and in closeup, in classical poses and in action, and in a wide variety of views—the standing male and female models, for instance, were photographed from eight different angles in a 360-degree circle. Sections one and two, covering the male and female nude figure, include photographic representation of running, walking, standing, sitting, and reclining, as well as detail studies of head, hands, and feet. Section three shows close-ups of facial expressions: joy, pain, surprise, etc., as well as sequences of expressions such as the transition from slight annoyance to great anger. In this section too are found details of a variety of heads, hands, eyes and noses, mouths, and ears. Section four is composed of photographs of a two-year-old child.

1 out of 5 stars A Total Waste of Paper.......2006-07-08

From the back cover: "Subjects included are male and female, and the models range in age from two years old to ninety years old. All together seventeen different models were photographed, in the most useful and instructive poses for the artist." This is a grossly misleading statement! What it should have said is: "We photographed one young male and one young female in some very uninspired, amateurish, and rather stiff poses. Because we have a ridiculous, prudish, and skewed Victorian attitude, we clothed the male in a distracting jock strap, making all of his photos somewhat useless as an honest reference for drawing and painting complete figures. We then filled up the rest of the book with a handful of equally uninspired shots of children, and a bunch of closeup photos of things like ears, but we made them such extreme closeups they contain no proportional reference and so are rather out of context with the rest of the figure. It did however, allow us to state, categorically, that we portray 17 different models!" I'm not sure who this book was meant for; prudish, Victorian, amateurs and shy, easily offended, weekend sketchers maybe? For a serious artist involved in the serious study of the human figure this book has nothing to offer. Don't waste your time or money. The only reason I gave this book one star is because I couldn't give it 0 stars... I sent it back the very next day after recieving it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book.......2006-02-16

This book is a rare find for easy reference for an artist. Has a great collection of various poses for both male and female models, including holding objects. The only problem I found with the book is the layout...every page has you turning around the book.

3 out of 5 stars (Happily) Amazed to see it's still in print..........2005-08-31

Because of comments like the reviewer who assumes that because it includes a few shots of a nude child it must be harmful trash and banned. This book was on the library shelf at my community college, and I never expected to find it still in print now because of its age.

I would not be interested in owning this book if it weren't for the various shots of different faces at different angles, hands, older and younger models, etc. Drawing children is incredibly difficult, the proportions of their bodies and faces are different from adults. It's very frustrating if you are working on a piece that requires children, especially if you have no children of your own to model for you, and going to public places to sketch or take reference photos of children will get you suspicious looks from parents. A nude child is NOT sexually provocative, and none of the other poses by the adults in this book are provocative either. I do wish there were more full-body poses of models besides the young adult male and female model, but you can't have everything in a single volume. The male model's jock strap is silly, especially considering there is no such censoring garment for the female model - underlining the silly belief in western society that female nudity is acceptable, but male nudity is taboo. It doesn't get too much in the way if you just need a generic pose reference. There are also some shots of the male posed with a stick, holding it similar to a shovel or other such prop (Can't recall if there are similar poses with the female), which is also helpful if you need to draw a character in action. Certainly no equal to having a real live model, but a good alternative in a pinch.

5 out of 5 stars Best Pose Book on the market.......2005-06-09

For anyone that appreciates the beauty of the human form, and enjoys drawing it...this is the best pose book on the market. This is not saying a lot, since there are not that many pose books out there. At least not many with lots of pictures, and at a size that is usable. This should be in any serious artist library for reference. The head shots and hand shots alone are worth the price. I agree with one reviewer that the jock strap is unnecessary and only distracts from the male form. Fortunately they did not do this with the woman. Considering how high modeling fees are, this book is a bargain.

          1 out of 5 stars DESERVES "O" STAR.......2005-02-12

I can NOT belive this book. Who in their RIGHT mind would let a child be photographed NUDE? It is the most distastefull thing i have EVER seen. From the man in his jock strap and the nude woman showing it ALL. Can not belive this book is Not banned from the world and that the author is not charged with Child pornography.Nasty,Nasty book this is.

            Book Description

The stunning photographic reportage of Father Leone Nani presents early twentieth-century China as seen through the lens of an "outsider" who brought to life the people, places and traditions of a lost empire. The sheer quality and quantity of his pictures, the choice of subjects and handling of widely different situations, have reserved Nani the right to be considered a master of black-and-white photography.

Leone Nani (1880-1935) lived in central China from 1904 to 1914. His missionary work took him to remote villages where he captured a world beyond the reach of other Westerners. Working in large format (mostly on glass plates he developed and printed himself in his mobile studio), Nani portrayed young couples, dignitaries, peasants and artisans. Equally gifted as an observer and reporter, he recorded everyday life scenes, religious ceremonies, architecture, and landscapes.

Beautifully reproduced here in duotone, Nani's extraordinary material bears witness to a turbulent time in China's history: a period of transition from the Q'ing dynasty into the twentieth century world order as a republic. Father Nani's pictures closed the era of Western photographers who eagerly preserved aspects of authentic China that would have otherwise been lost.

"Tune In Tomorrow," published in 1994 collects Tom Tomorrow's comic strips from 1991-1994. During this period, Tom continues to skewer his favorite targets (in true, hilarious fashion) including the American political machine, mass media, and blind consumerism. The highlight of this book is the 10 pages or so of a travelogue to Paris that Sparky (the Penguin) undertakes - a refreshing and brilliant examination of international travel and cultural differences across the Pond.

            5 out of 5 stars Timeless.......2004-06-22

Last week I read 'Tune in Tomorrow' by Tom Tomorrow. It is a remarkable book; funny, provoking, engaging. All the right elements needed for a timeless work. I would put it in the same stellar company of today's classics such as 'This Week I Married John Wayne Bobbitt' by Dottie Brewer, 'Nasty Snips' by Christopher Teague, 'Reconstructive Microsurgery' by Rollin K Daniel and 'A Thing So Small' by Silence X. Whittaker.

4 out of 5 stars Very funny and insightful.........2000-09-23

This political minded cartoon pretty much attacks everything with a humorous angle. The writing and the expressions on people's faces make the book funny. While doing that, he also makes valid points on the media, George Bush, Bill Clinton, and many other issues (from 1994).

I have an old paperback of this book, first published in the '70s (?). In addition to being an informative look at radio broadcasting during the golden age, focusing especially on the soaps but also on such dramatic anthologies as Mr First Nighter, it is also quite hilarious. Ms. Higby's inside knowledge as a radio actress includes many uproarious anecdotes. Written in a light, breezy style, it is sure to entertain even those with little interest in old-time radio. Very enjoyable.
