Book Description

Margaret Visser has visited many more churches than most people, but like the rest of us, she began to tire of the slew of facts and lack of meaningful information available from guidebooks. The desire to find answers to her own questions -- as a traveler, a believer, and an insatiable anthropologist of the everyday -- led her to undertake this unique and revelatory book.

More than any other kind of edifice, a church is intentionally meaningful in all its aspects, and Visser decided to find out what it was trying to express, in its nuances as well as in its grand gestures. She deliberately chose a relatively simple church just outside the walls of Rome, Sant'Agnese fuori le Mura, but she casts a wide net -- taking in history, theology, anthropology, and folklore, among other disciplines -- to illuminate its physical and spiritual architecture. As she guides us through the building, from apse to nave, catacombs to campanile, Visser explores the symbolism of lambs, the Christian fascination with virgins, the meanings of martyrdom, and the history of relics. At the same time, she moves back through the centuries to reveal Christianity in its earliest forms and purposes. The book ends at the church's beginning, with the grave of Agnes, a twelve-year-old girl who was murdered seventeen hundred years ago and whose remains lie buried beneath the altar. By then we have learned how to read any church building, how to interpret what it "does" and "says," whether we are of any faith or none.

3 out of 5 stars More Church, Less Sermon, Please.......2006-03-13

This could have been a terrific guide to absolutely everything in the fine old Roman church of Sant'Agnese fuori le Mura, but instead it bogs down in mystical meanderings and fifth-rate philosophizing. These aspects of the book might be of interest to those who actually believe such things, but for me it just produced eye-rolling. I found myself skimming page after page and saying impatiently to the author, "Will you please just get on with it!" There's a great guidebook to Sant' Agnese in there somewhere, but the information is buried among all the other pious maundering that bloats the book to over 250 pages. There are enough footnotes and a long enough bibliography that this could almost be a PhD dissertation! The only way it would be of any use as a guide book would be to go through it with a highlighter, and mark the passages of relevance to the church itself, while ignoring the interminable sermonizing.

3 out of 5 stars Very nice, but not really a book on architecture..........2006-01-30

I agree with with the other reviewers about the lack of diagrams and pictures. Since the text is supposed to address the architecture of churches, it needs graphics. Moreover, it lacks rigor in defining how the programmatic elements of a church influence the form of the architecture, and instead focuses on religious history. This book should be in the religious studies section, not architecture.

3 out of 5 stars Some great insights, if you have the patience........2005-10-27

This book is an in-depth discussion of the meaning of church architecture from a laymans (lay woman's, in this case)perspective. As Visser points out, someone on the "inside" of a faith--in her case, Christianity-- does tend to have insights into the meaning of its traditions that an outside observer might not. This book is full of little insights that are just astounding at times. However, Visser tends to wax poetic on the glories of Christianity every third sentence or so, which makes reading this book for the purpose of studying architecture more of a crapshoot and less of a solid learning experience. By all means, if you need a reinforcement of why your Christian faith is so amazing, get this book. If you want a good in-depth discussion of Christian architecture without having to sit through a sermon, this is probably not the book for you.

3 out of 5 stars St. Agnes and an altared world.......2004-10-22

The book's subtitle is oddly inappropriate: Sant'Agnese fuori le Mura in Rome is hardly an "ordinary" chuch, but rather one of Christianity's most historic. It was built in late antiquity over the burial site of St. Agnes, reputedly a 12-year-old martyr executed for refusing to renounce her faith -- ironically, only a few years before Christianity was adopted by the emperor Constantine as the official religion. Among the items of interest are the mosaic in the apse, columns from ancient Roman buildings, statuary, the altar, fragments of wall inscriptions, the crypt holding the remains of Agnes and Emerentiana (a similarly martyred girl), and catacombs.

Margaret Visser has a worthy mission in writing the book. She wants to help us see the objects in Sant'Agnese not in purely artistic or archeological terms, but as aspects of a religious faith that once turned the western world completely around and, she trusts, is a living force today. As she takes us on a guided "tour" through the building and its surroundings, she muses on the philosophical and spiritual implications that they have embodied down through the centuries.

There is no doubt that Visser is both knowledgeable about the history of Christianity and has meditated long over the palimpsest of meanings reflected by practically every surface in the church. For readers (like me) with many gaps in their understanding of traditional Christian iconography, her observations can be striking. It had never occurred to me, for example, that Christianity took over the idea of an altar from earlier religions, with one remarkably humane difference. Before, an altar was always a place where living beings were sacrificed. Christianity abolished that distasteful practice, but kept the altar as a reminder of another kind of sacrifice, that which its founder had made for the sake of humanity. As Visser discusses this momentous change, it is easy to be swept along with her in admiration for one of early Christianity's practices that suggests a deep and powerful love for God's creatures.

Visser is almost certainly a Roman Catholic, though she never explicitly says so, but she is clearly keen to uncover meanings in the church's furnishings that will resonate with all kinds of Christians and non-Christians. Nevertheless, although she discovers many higher octaves of significance that have universal appeal, some fine doctrinal points she lingers over will tire the patience of readers with no taste for theology.

Visser's ruminations about the interior meanings of concepts such as the circle and certain numbers are occasionally obscure, and in her determination to probe every layer of symbolism in each object she can seem to be almost free associating. Most readers will probably find paragraphs or sections that will invite skimming.

Those reservations aside, I found Visser to be a fine travel companion for visiting Sant'Agnese. She helps us understand what these mementos mean, and how they are reminders that even in a time like that of the late Roman empire, when intolerance and cruelty were standard operating procedure, there were still those who turned toward the light -- and ever since, those who have remembered and honored them.

5 out of 5 stars Religion: A*Live* Imagining.......2004-08-26

One of the reviews on the back of this book states that every reader will be able to pinpoint at the exact point that s/he becomes hooked by the text. For me, this point wasn't until about halfway through the book, in chapter 5, when I realized that a reading of a church building is not like a reading of a book: the imagination presences itself front-and-center, rather than lurking in the background, masked by a self-proclaimed "objectivity". The religious imagination embodies itself in the artwork, architecture and ceremony that *is* the church.

This book is a thick narrative that works on multiple levels: architectural and artistic, theological and socio-historical. The church building itself is far from static; in letting the church speak of what is timeless, it itself enters into time: ancient altars and recent restorations, classical Byzantine mosaics and Baroque-inspired paintings all inhabit the same space of the church. Each generation, each culture has done something to become a part of the history of the church, and therefore a part of the next generation. The church becomes a shared narrative, so to speak: a structural representating of communion.

The book functions as both an introduction to Christianity, and more specifically Roman Catholicism. Visser situates her text within the larger history of the Roman church, a world filled with saints and mystics, ascetics, martyrs and power struggles, sacraments and quasi-magical popular beliefs. It is a world in which the dead still have a presence in the present, and in which heaven and earth meet at particular times and in particular places - and more in the church than anywhere else.

What appears more than anything else in Visser's work is that of the Roman Catholic imagination. Although certain theologians were largely systematic, the wider history of the Roman Catholic church speaks a different story: sacred time and sacred space, and an experience of the mysterium tremendum. It is within this sense of the sacred, embodied temporally and spatially in the liturgy and the sacraments, and continually witnessed to by the church building, which holds the people whose histories give rise to it, its development and change, restoration and remembering over time.

Visser's work is a brialliant book that will be enriched by those who come with prior knowledge, and will enrich those who pursue more knowledge afterwards. One will learn about Christian theology and history, and its socio-historical imaginings throughout time. Visser's text works outside of simplistic - even if rigorous - textual analyses, and looks to history and its representations in space and time. A brialliant work for those with heart, mind and spirit: imagination.

5 out of 5 stars Complete introduction into traditional wedding photography.......2007-08-18

It is the first wedding book that I like out of three that I have. Easy to read and understand, covered every area that I had questions about, nice and light humor. Full of useful examples and advices. I immediately saw how implementing some new techniques from this book can improve my work.

          1 out of 5 stars Outdated!.......2007-07-03

I was disappointed with this book. There were some good ideas such as formal posing, but otherwise, outdated. A better wedding photography book by far is "Digital Wedding Photography" by Glen Johnson.

3 out of 5 stars Whether you like this book will depend on your photography style.......2007-06-05

If you lean more towards wedding photojournalism, you'll find this book annoying. The author takes stab after stab at the photojournalistic style and concentrates on listing which images you can sell after the wedding.

I found the photography examples rather cheesy and old. The "Posing" chapter starts with a full page image of a bride and groom (almost smack in the middle of the photograph) and the groom's arms hanging down to his sides. I'm new to wedding photography, but even I know that's poor posing! It has some good points, but I wasn't too impressed.

If you're into Traditional style of photography, this is a very good book for you to read. The author breaks the wedding down to almost every kind of picture you should create and how to make it sell at the end. It will be useful to you.

So far, after having read 4 separate books on wedding photography this is my least favorite.

4 out of 5 stars Well organized guide.......2007-05-13

I have bought several books on posing and wedding photography. This is my first covering the most important aspects of the wedding photography business. Although it admits the prevailing tendency of admitting casual, journalistic photos on a wedding album, it still thoroughly explains the conventional wedding photos. It also describes how to deal with the business side of this activity. I consider this book a good very good source for those of us who would like to enter on this field of photography.

          4 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2007-03-27

I've been reading through this and have found it very informative. I'm happy with my purchase.

if your looking for a book to help you on your way ,forget this one ! if you dont have hassleblad or other high end equipment' forget this book, if your not already a professional forget this book ,if your using digital media , forget this book, the book however does have some good pointers and suggestions, but if avant garde photography isnt your bag,,, forget this book. i was extremely disappointed in the way it seemed to just address the already established proffessional, and last if your not interested in black white and infrared film usage forget this book!
maybe if this book was updated it would be better but that is a big maybe

          5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book.......2006-03-08

You must have this book and read it... you will learn something and giving ideas... I do not mind what camera they used but the measurement of lenses is very important... I searched throught out the web site... my conclusion are most of wedding photographer I counted used 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm and 300mm. My attention is to shot portrait and wedding therefore I bought 50mm and my 85mm is on the way but I could not afford to buy the rest might be the wide lens and zooms

3 out of 5 stars decent, but starting to age.......2006-03-03

The imagery in this book is of a fairly high quality. The locations and scenes look believeable; nothing over-the-top and extravagent like some books show (by that I mean, obviously created by wedding photographers who shoot only for the wealthy in the best locales). The complete lack of digital is a real weak point to this book. As of the time of this review, I'm told that nearly 95% of wedding photographers shoot digital, especially starting out. Therefore the equipment suggestions, while still somewhat informative, are heavily dated (the primary emphasis on medium format, while compelling, is no longer the most efficient way to get going in the business). The images are all high quality and quite inspiring. It's a decent work, but I'll probably buy a few more wedding photography books before finding the one that does me the most good.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer for the Budding Wedding Photographer.......2006-01-04

The images in this book are very inspiring. Studying the imagery alone is very educational.

A constant student of light and photography, this was my first book on Wedding Photography. After reading it, my wishlist grew to include more lenses, camera bodies and flash units. And my photo-journalistic wedding photography improved (results may vary ;)

This book will have you thinking more about contemporary, artistic and moody images to be captured on the Wedding day. You'll also begin thinking about your services and the value you can offer your clients. This book will have you thinking about adding an assistant to your list of must-haves for every Wedding job--an assistant who understands your vision and goals for the wedding day adds so much to the quality and quantity of images you can take on that day which (hopefully) is a once-in-a-lifetime event for your clients.

This book does not cover so much about Engagement photos, group formals, or the marketing of your services (although these topics are covered briefly).

I also recommend "The Best of Wedding Photography" by Bill Hurter.

5 out of 5 stars Better than most..........2005-10-25

Get this one! There are scads of average books out there on every subject in photography. Most are dry, dull and a waste of ink and paper. This one opens a window into the soul of the author (well, the photographer.. I think the actual writer was the co-author.) I have the distinct impression this is an expression of joy and enthusiasm from someone who started by doing what she loved and then slowed down long enough to write about it.

          5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2004-12-02

I purchased this book with a group of other books on wedding photography, and am pleased with it. The book begins with "the wedding repertoire" which is the "list" of pictures that a good photographer will want to get at a typical wedding. He goes over when to try and get the pictures and what to do to make the day go smoother. In the back of the book, Mr, Sint has a sample list of pictures to get (and what order they should be taken)
It covers all aspects of a wedding, from booking to album finishing and sales. It goes over lighting with one to four lights, flash, and fill lighting. There is also a chapter on pricing and packages. Mr. Sint has smart business suggestions as well as ways to deal with children who don't want their picture taken (check out pg 133) and the one guy in the bridal party who hates pictures. There is also a discussion on equipment needed and the benifits of various pieces of equipment.
This book goes over in enough detail all that someone would need to know to photograph weddings. If you are only going to buy one book, on wedding photography, buy this one.
I was pleasently suprised at an entire chapter on posing. The models are all in leotards which makes it very easy to see how the body is positioned.
Overall a good buy and a wise investment. I will get more than my money's worth out of this book. Excellent job Mr. Sint!

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2003-04-15

I thought this was a very good book. I would have to say it covered EVERYTHING you would need to know about wedding photography. I've viewed Denis Reggie tapes, visit wedding photography forums daily, and talked to a few wedding photographers and this book is just as good as everything I've learned everywhere else. You can not go wrong with this one.

Please don't take my praise as to say it is the only book anyone would ever need, because like anything else, you should get information from many different sources. Make sure to make this one as part of your education.

5 out of 5 stars Steve Sints wedding book is excellent!.......2000-07-15

I highly recommend Steve Sints wedding book. I have been a photographer since the mid-70's but have never photographed a wedding. When I reluctently agreed to photograph my nieces wedding I sought out advice of fellow professionals. Many pointed to Sints book as a good starting place.I bought the book expecting to end up with more questions than answers. But after reading it I know I had found all the information I needed in one book. The book explains everything about the process of photographing a wedding. There are photo lists, equipment advice, pricing information, and most importantly, dealing with the various problems that can occur. If you have never photographed a wedding before or if you are an old pro you can learn from this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for beginning or experienced wedding photogs........2000-07-14

This book is a great resource for both the beginning and the experienced wedding photographer. There's a ton of information on basic posing (including some photographs to show you just how it's done) and lighting which will come in handy to the beginning photographer. There's also a lot of insightful information about trends in the industry and the business end of the job that the more established photographer can learn from. I've been photographing weddings for 8 years and this book provided me with information and ideas that I've been able to implement in my own business. Kudos to Steve for another well written, amazingly useful-in-real-life book.

5 out of 5 stars Clearly the best one yet!.......2000-07-14

I've been a follower of Steve's for a couple of years now. He's a rare bird. Immensely successful in his profession and tirelessly sharing with his secrets and methods for addressing the three parts of being a great wedding photographer.

He has written a book that is quite simply a college course in wedding photography in 176 pages. I thought I knew a fair amount about the business and art of weddings, but this book oozing with secrets, tips and ideas for doing it better, has snapped me awake. Steve, you did a great. The book is worth ten time what I paid for it because it'll make more money for me I'm sure. It must be great, after all, the competition from "Sweden" seems bent on unscrewing your tripod legs!

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Urban Werewolf Adventures.......2002-04-05

At first, I was hesitant to buy this book. After all, I already had the original edition, would there really be much of a difference? Absolutely! The history is deeper, their views on breeds and auspices as well as the other tribes is more thought out, and it is made abundantly clear that these are not just the down-and-out cousins of the Glass Walkers.

The Bone Gnawers are looked down upon by the rest of the Garou Nation, and it's easy for players to turn their noses up at them as well. But after reading this new look at the tribe, it's easy to see that they as a family of outcasts, they have created a new way to insure their survival. They can also use the new totems, rites and gifts that didn't show up in the first edition (there are also rules for using the gifts and rites in a live action game). As for Storytellers, Bone Gnawers are more numerous than their Glass Walker counterparts and would therefore be more prevelant as NPC's in an urban setting. Additionally, after reading this, you'll have a better understanding of how to make cities more dark, foreboding and dangerous. The artwork is great, though some artists tend to make these Garou almost as hideous as Nosferatu. And be aware that, since these Garou tend to live rough lives, they use rough language (in case you are easily offended).

          Easily surpasses it's initial edition.

I recommend it to anyone who ever wondered about the dirty life of the Bone Gnawers...Great read and an essential to any World of Darkness library.

5 out of 5 stars Bone Gnawers are not what I thought they were..........2007-05-31

The book gave me a better scope at what a Bone Gnawer really is, and the character of Carlita is really enjoyable. Not all the werewolves have to be so blue blooded and perfect to be honorable. Carlita proves that while she's an easy-going type of character, fan of the Mc Donalds hamburguer she can also be a noble beast.

It was really a very good book to read.

The Star Gazers was like walking out and lying to get a rest of the pace of the book, with the background of Antonine Teardroop and his peaceful way of thinking calming the nerves of the readers before things get started up again.

          A really good read! ;)

5 out of 5 stars Best tribe novels yet.......2004-05-16

This is easily the best white wolf book I've read. Tribe novel: Bone Gnawers is about the young werewolf Carlita, and her new pack's assignment to defeat an evil wyrm creature. It has great imagery, humor, and dialogue, and it tells of the beginning of one of the most important packs in the werewolf series. Tribe novel: Stargazers is about Antonine Teardrop and his discoveries through the umbra. This novel has great description, and it starts off talking about kailindo, the martial art of the garou (though it's kung-fu termonology is inaccurate). This one has more about Carlita and her pack as they help Antonine. This novel proves that the stargazers are the best tribe! :)

5 out of 5 stars Really Pulls Together.......2003-01-17

The characters and plotline in the story really pull together beautifully. The Bone Gnawers half of the book is particularly hilarious, and Stargazers helps pull the myriad characters from the past volumes together as the prophesied characters struggle against the Wyrm and other foes. Definitely my favorite book, I think, as volumes 1, 2, and 3 just get you ready for the setting. The books overall are so intense they'll keep you up all night reading to see what happens next. The books are also very well written, considering that each little tribe mini-novel is written by a different author and the characters stay consistent personality wise.
