    Book Description

The characteristic look of Southern California, with its red-tiled roofs, stucco homes, and Spanish street names suggests an enduring fascination with the region's Spanish-Mexican past. In this engaging study, Phoebe S. Kropp reveals that the origins of this aesthetic were not solely rooted in the Spanish colonial period, but arose in the early twentieth century, when Anglo residents recast the days of missions and ranchos as an idyllic golden age of pious padres, placid Indians, dashing caballeros and sultry senoritas. Four richly detailed case studies uncover the efforts of Anglo boosters and examine the responses of Mexican and Indian people in the construction of places that gave shape to this cultural memory: El Camino Real, a tourist highway following the old route of missionaries; San Diego's world's fair, the Panama-California Exposition; the architecturally- and racially-restricted suburban hamlet Rancho Santa Fe; and Olvera Street, an ersatz Mexican marketplace in the heart of Los Angeles. California Vieja is a compelling demonstration of how memory can be more than nostalgia. In Southern California, the Spanish past became a catalyst for the development of the region's built environment and public culture, and a civic narrative that still serves to marginalize Mexican and Indian residents.

5 out of 5 stars An informed and informative analytical survey.......2004-03-07

Presidio, Mission, And Pueblo: Spanish Architecture And Urbanism In The United States by architectural historian James Early is an informed and informative analytical survey of architectural marvels in the "old Spanish borderlands" of Florida, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Professor Early scrutinizes majestic works from the great stone fort in St. Augustine; the pueblo-style churches of New Mexico, and more. Black-and-white as well as color photographs sumptuously illustrate this extensively researched and deftly narrated examination. Also available in a hardcover edition, Presidio, Mission, And Pueblo is a very highly recommended addition to academic library American Architectural History Studies reference collections and reading lists.

5 out of 5 stars AN INVALUABLE RESOURCE.......2004-02-23

James Early, a professor emeritus at Southern Methodist University is an acknowledged expert in the field of architecture who has penned several works in that area. For this reader "Presidio, Mission, and Pueblo" is his finest. It is a fitting chronicle and tribute to the architectural accomplishments of the American Southwest.

Richly illustrated and comprehensive this volume includes Florida, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Structures receiving a close look are varied - there's a stone fort in St. Augustine, buildings surrounding the plaza in the French Quarter of New Orleans, churches resembling pueblos in New Mexico, and stone churches found in Texas, Arizona, and California.

Thorough to the nth degree Early discusses the social, political, and economic contexts in which these structures were built.

"Presidio, Mission, and Pueblo" is an invaluable resource for scholars and architectural historians.

                Book Description

Instruction in this color-illustrated book introduces three of the most commonly used dry media for drawing and sketching. Roughly the first one-third of this art students' manual explains the properties and uses of charcoal, sanguine crayon, and chalk, and demonstrates how to get started with them on art projects. Information here includes recommended papers, ways of making strokes, shading, color blending, tonal range, and correcting mistakes. The book's remaining two-thirds presents a series of 16 practical exercises that employ all three media. Exercises include creating chiaroscuro (shades and shadows), drawing still-lifes and landscapes, mastering perspective, drawing nudes, and making portraits. Here is a practical art class instruction manual that can also be used as a self-teaching book by ambitious amateur artists. Full-color illustrations on nearly every page.

3 out of 5 stars Some keyword demonstrations.......2003-07-25

The Charcoal, Sanguine Crayon and Chalk (CSC for short) is a somewhat difficult medium to find learning material on. Most books on pastel or painting mention "redchalk" or "sanguine" merely in passing as a sketching tool. Books on drawing hardly mention it at all. In this respect, this little book is almost unique in that it treats redchalk (drawing with black, sanguine and white chalks) as a subject in its own.

The book is essentially divided in two, where the first part deals with the media and tools needed for working with chalks. The text is some 90 pages long, and the first 25 or so pages are spent on tools, chalks, papers, blending, perspective, sketching etc. Most subjects are treated on two pages with huge pictures and a few lines of text. Of course, no one will learn, say, perspective or scetching from such breaf treatises alone, so the very beginner may want to look elsewhere to get some basic concepts and skills in place.

The last part of the book is devoted to "practical exercises". The exercises are very nice in that they suggest how the painting evolves through the various stages. My previous experince is with pencils and drawing, so I was quite happy to see that the paintings here look quite "bleak" through most of the work; only after the last few finishing touches does the portraits "spring to life". That's the kind of demostrattion that is most valuable for preserving inspiration in an would-be autodidact like myself.

Most of the emphasis on CSC is presented from the painter's point of view. The basic techniques are based on various ways of handling the chalk bars with the objective of making surfaces of color on the paper. No matter if one uses cross hatching or side strokes, once the color is on the paper it is blended with a stump, cloth or brush. The demonstrations clearly show that such techniques can produce stunning results, but I would like to see more of the "drawing" techniques, i.e. lines and cross hatching left in place in the finished work. Painters appear to regard CSC as a fast and efficient tool for preliminary sketches, a tool for some sort of "limited painting". To me, CSC is a form of "extended drawing" that lets me do things and exploit effects the pencil alone does not provide. Unfortunately, this little book does not treat the "drawing aspects" of CSC.

All in all, this book provides great insporation as well as quite a few hints and suggestions about techniques and tricks. Although it leaves a bit to be desired, both on emphasis and in depth of coverage, and thus could be punished quite severely in terms of stars, the important point is that this book is actually available, providing suggestions, tricks and inspiration for trying out Charcoal, Sangune Crayon and Chalk.

                5 out of 5 stars a wonderful book!.......2002-08-25

This book helps you learn the "painterly" way of drawing with the broader dry media. Even though not specifically for pastels, it will help your pastel works.

I cannot remember ever seeing a book of photography as filled with fun as this collection of images from Us Magazine. The humor is solid and clean, something that comedians have a hard time duplicating. The book is greatly enhanced by the special genius of Mark Seliger for this type of work.

Before going further, let me caution you that some images are of partially undressed women that would earn this material an R rating (on the soft side) if it were contained in a motion picture.

The photographs are reproduced in both color and black-and-white. The reproduction quality is very high, and the editors have chosen well where to use two-page spreads and where not to. Although not every image displays good-humored fun, about two-thirds of them do. The book probably would have worked even better if every image had followed that theme. In most cases, the image itself is a happy one that also contains a joke about the celebrity involved . . . creating two ways to have a fun with the image.

Here are my favorite images in the book:

                Drew Barrymore (cover shot) holding boxing globes up as a visual bra as she stands in a sparring pose in a boxing ring by Mark Seliger;

"You are a vision of nowness" is the description of this book written inside. I personally found the images more timeless than that. You get a sense of what is universally appealing at all times and to almost all people.

After looking at these happy images, think about the ways that fun appeals to your better nature. How can you experience that kind of fun more often? How can you surround yourself with an environment that teems with such fun? How can you extend and share that fun with others?

Have a great giggle . . . as often as possible!

In this book, there are lots of pictures of celebrities. There is also a selection of quotes from celebrities. It is worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent 'coffee table' book...and for autographing.......1998-12-13

Actually, I have two favorite celebrity photography books: this one and Rolling Stone: Photographers. I am an avid autograph collector; so, I use these books whenever I hear about a celebrity being in the area. At the moment, I have this book signed by Denis Leary and Stephen Dorf..with more to come, I hope. About the only photograph I didn't like was the two-pager of Alicia Silverstone. It doesn't really look like her. This is definitely a great book to have on the coffee table for company while you're still getting ready. :)

                Book Description

Amy is Adopted. Her real parents didn't want her so they gave her away to go live with strangers. Are you a good girl?!

Thus begins Sarah Montague’s hilariously perverse You Can Be Anything! From A to Z. Like a fiendish rebuttal to Oh, the Places You'll Go! penned by the gene-spliced spawn of Charles Addams and Edward Gorey, this alphabetical anthology reveals the dark side of adulthood in twenty-six pitch-perfect, deadpan scenarios. It’s the perfect book for the genuinely jaded.

5 out of 5 stars Painfully True and Incredibly Funny!.......2005-04-16

                Painfully True and Incredibly Funny!

This book is hysterical! I was standing in line at B&N when its bright, lime green color caught my eye. I cracked it open only to land directly on the "Fiona is a Failure" page. My name is Fiona, so I was understandably taken aback by the acerbic follow-up question of "Are you good enough so people won't leave you!? (I hope so.)" I laughed so hard I almost had to get out of line! Each alphabetically featured name is accompanied by a humorously stinging character observation - honing in on those mental judgments most of make but are usually too polite to verbalize. A year later, I still find this book brutally funny. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars One of two books hopeless job hunters really need!!!.......2002-11-12

After months of trying to decide what was so wrong with me that no one would hire me, I nearly had a breakdown. This book and Hire Me Dumbass by Joe Mozian helped to put everything into perspective. If you feel like its you… its not. These two books will absolutely help you realize that, and make you laugh till something good happens. These books are hysterical and are written by people who really understand the emotions involved with not being wanted. More importantly, they know how to laugh at rejection. If you are one of the millions of Americans experiencing career rejection or confusion, get these two books and laugh a little.

                5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2002-08-31

This book rules!!! The person who wrote the review below simply didn't get it. Biting, scathing, witty, intelligent humor. Not for the weak-hearted!

1 out of 5 stars Not all it was cracked up to be.......2002-08-23

I bought this book solely based on the other reviews posted here and I am sorry I did. It was generally a waste of my 10 bucks. There was nothing new or especially "fresh" about any of the humor and - frankly - it got very boring about half way through. Letters A and B made me laugh, but the remaining 24 letters fell flat. I found it to be mean-spirited in some cases and felt like I was reading the author's therapy sessions in others. Don't buy this book. Others have written much better on this exact same topic.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious. Laugh out loud hilarious.......2002-07-23

This book is hilarious. The perfect gift for anyone who grew up. Buy many for friends. Every person I've shown this to has laughed. Out loud. Publically.
