Book Description
This updated edition includes the following new information: the current procedures for providing quality control of the consistency of concrete strength; the computerized design of slabs; and all new material about column design. It also serves as an effective tutor for those in classes in architecture, architectural engineering and engineering technology and is an excellent reference, too, for practicing architects and engineers.
Customer Reviews:
Schaum's Concrete.......2007-09-12
College texts only provide so many good examples and are sparse on the details. Schaum's fills in a large explanatory gap.
Too out-of-date .......2007-08-03
This reference is useful as a review of various types of concrete construction. However, it was last revised in 1993 and refers to the 1989 American Concrete Institute code, so while the content is generally correct, many of the code provisions have since changed.
Buyer Beware.......2005-09-13
An excellent outline for the ACI 89/92 Code. However, it is NOT for the current ACI code! If you are designing with the older version of the Code, this book is great. If you are using the 2002 or 2005 Code, this book is essentially obsolete.
I somehow missed that when I ordered the book.

Need a replacement.......2002-02-15
I bought the original first edition in 1980 to prepare for my P.E. exam. As I work very often with concrete design, this book is a must have. I really wore out my old copy (which I had to go to several stores to find back then) and could never find a new one. Thank you Amazon for this opportunity.
The nice thing is that it is easy to understand, and gives related info on retaining walls, (what I work with, mostly) and soil mechanics.
So after 20 years, I am grateful for this opportunity. One can not say enough about the Schaum's Series. I graduated college 30 years ago next month with a degree in Civil Engineering, and if it weren't for Schaum's (and Cliff's notes for that English Class) I don't know how I would ever have done it.
Agree all the titles that I have had experience with are excellent, simple to understand, and economical, too even though the current prices are more than they were 20-30 years ago when I purchased most of my Schaum's library. Keep up the good work.
Good for beginners as well as practicing engineers.......1999-11-06
This is a nice book on reinforced concrete design. Although it aims mainly to students, you will be benefitted even if you are a practicing engineer. It is mainly written on ACI code on both USCS & SI units, but the book is useful even if you follow some other country's code. It covers all basic & some advanced design concepts. Chapters include - materials, loads, design methods & preocedures, shear, torsion, detailing, servicability, columns, footings, beam, slabs, retaining walls etc. Main asset of the book is that it is very concise, yet covered almost everythin with a good number of solved problems.

Customer Reviews:
Exceptional reference for painting this subject--and eye candy too.......2006-10-15
Susanna Spann's instruction on painting glass and flowers covers a wide range of topicss, from how to paint from photos, assuring the proper range of values, composition, color, backgrounds, and how to work AS a painter, whether for pleasure, presige or profit.
The demonstrations in the book are excellent. There is a value scale demo--how to paint shades of gray to get a value scale. You use this against the colors in the subject that distract the eye so that the right intensity of light or dark is achieved. This is one of the most important principles in painting anything, even abstracts.
The author's handling of various backgrounds helps the artist achieve a painterly result that is far different from rendering photographic detail simply as it's seen. This is vital if you want your paintings to stand as paintings and not as renderings of snapshots.
One thing of GREAT value in this book is how to set up photography for your painting. Lighting (spot, outdoors, high key, low key) helps the painter achieve dramatic results, whether from highlights on glass or dramatic shadows.
If you paint flowers and glass, this is a must-have text. If you do other still life subjects, this still is a valuable text even if you never paint a flower. Great reference and highly recommended.
Wonderful Instruction.......2003-01-23
This book is the answer to a watercolorist's questions about value and color. Susanna provides demonstrations and clear, precise instructions and information. You can easily teach yourself to arrange, photograph and paint crystal vases and flowers using this book. It provides very clear, useful and practical information about composition, backgrounds, and shadows. It is a basic handbook that every artist show use as a reference every day.
Painting Crystal and Flowers.......2001-06-27
This is more then painting crystal and flowers. Any artist in should have it as a reference. There is information on setting up still life, photographing setups, and composition errors. There is a chapter values in which you make your own value chart. Then you hole-punch the value chart which helps to see values in your painting or setup. I have over 250 art technique books. I thought I knew everything. YOU MUST GET THIS BOOK.

Crystalization of Nature.......2001-05-20
Susanna takes you on a whirl wind trip into the depths and colors of crystal, shadows and reflections. Until I bought this book, I never viewed any of Susanna's artwork, but I took a chance since I am so moved by flowers in crystal. Upon reading this book, I am even more moved and excited. Susanna has a way of describing the necessary steps to develop crystaline artwork in a user friendly manner. I had no fear to go out to my backyard with my crystal vases and take dozens of rolls of film that I want to translate to paintings. I was convinced to use bright and bold colors by her demonstrations, colors that have often intimated me. Susanna's paintings of crystal and flowers want you to "Ting" them to see if they are real or just an image on paper. Her demonstrations are easy to follow and I was surprised by the outcomes. She lead me on a path of success. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in painting crystal, reflections and flowers.

Customer Reviews:
The Closed Captioning Handbook.......2007-06-08
It's a great book but it's written from the perspective of the consumer not the person doing the closed captioning. So there isn't as much information in it that serves me as I thought there would be.
quite thorough.......2007-01-31
If you want to know anything about Closed Captions, this book probably has the answers. Information on the new digital standard (EIA-708) is a bit lacking, presumably because this is not really in common use yet. Other than this, however, almost anything you could want to know is in here.
Seeing the Audio .......2005-03-14
"From the beginning, closed captioning has been a way for people who can't 'hear' the audio of a movie or TV show to 'see' the audio", writes Gary D. Robson. He then explains that the benefits of closed captioning now extend far beyond the deaf and hard of hearing communities. Patrons in a noisy sports bar are among such beneficaries, as are those in any learning environment (research has shown that augmenting auditory experience with captions increases retention and comprehension).
Mr. Robson knows whereof he speaks, as he is a recognized and published authority in the field of captioning. A simple Internet search will reveal the extent of his Web presence and the wealth of information he originates about captioning. Now he has provided us with this unique printed reference.
"The Closed Captioning Handbook" is a must-read for anyone wanting to learn about captioning and its uses in boradcast and digital television, on DVD, in movie theatres, or anyplace else. It further provides information on the complex captioning laws, overviews accessible web site design and live-event captioning, identifies sources of captioning equipment (if you want to do it yourself), and (if you don't) provides contact information for businesses who will do it for you.
You will not be disappointed in this book!

Every little bunny should have a brother as kind and thoughtful as Willa's big brother Willoughby. When Willa can't sleep because she is so afraid of bad dreams, her brother leans down from the top bunk to encourage his little sister to think happy thoughts... about her chicken slippers, her blue-and-white jumpsuit, and tomorrow's anticipated pleasures. That very night, Willoughby takes Willa on a piggy-back ride around the cozy tree house to check on her breakfast food, her toys in their basket, and the quiet world sleeping outside, all the while explaining in soft, soothing tones how everything in their snug little world is waiting for the next morning to unfold. He tells her that the morning is waiting "For grass to grow, flowers to bloom, and leaves to flutter. For clouds to float, wind to blow, and sun to shine. For birds to fly, bees to buzz, and ducks to quack." "'That's a lot of happy things,' said Willa." Joyce Dunbar knows just how to set the scene for sleep, and Debi Gliori's charming, expressive bunnies are very, very cute. (Click to see a sample spread. Book Description
In this endearing bedtime story, Willa's big brother helps her get to sleep by reminding her about all of the happy things around her. Willa is afraid of bad dreams. "Think of something happy," suggests her big brother, Willoughby. But Willa needs his help. So together they think of all the happy things that await her in the morning--cozy slippers to warm her little feet, a yummy breakfast, and the morning itself, which loves to gently nudge her awake. But for Willa, the happiest thing of all is knowing that Willoughby will be there in the morning, too, just like always. This reassuring bedtime book will quickly become a cherished addition to family libraries--favorite for grown-ups and little ones to share for years to come.
Customer Reviews:
How 'bout happier?.......2007-07-04
I, as a non-artist, can think of much more inspiring reasons for a small child to be happy at bedtime. Disappointing and shallow.
Adorable book for siblings.......2006-04-30
My kids love this book, especially when I replace the bunnies names with my kids' names. It's an adorable story about how an older sibling makes an effort to comfort his little sister and she returns the love. Very sweet with "cuddly" illustrations. Perfect for bedtime!
My favorite children's book.......2006-04-24
I found this book breathtakingly beautiful. I love the way it is written as well as the illustrations. It is written and illustrated by women which is a plus. It is a pleasure to give this book as a gift to little ones.
Charming Illustrations.......2005-09-27
The illustrations in this book are charming. The text itself wasn't quite what I was expecting. More about why you need to go to sleep than about "Happy thoughts to sleep/dream by" Still, the pictures are beautiful.
Favorite Bedtime Book.......2005-09-17
This is the best bedtime story. It's so sweet how the older brother comforts his little sister's fear of bad dreams. Beautifully illustrated and teaches your child to be empathetic and comforting.

Book Description
A blank-eyed, silent meditation on young love thwarted and re-kindled.
If we can have graphic novels, we can surely have graphic novellas, and this latest book from the acclaimed Norwegian cartoonist Jason is a prime example of a tight, self-contained volume that tells one complete, satisfying story in a compact 48 pages.
Tell Me Something picks up the stylized anthropomorphic characters of Jason's earlier works (Hey, Wait... and The Iron Wagon), as well as the challenge of all-pantomime (or almost) comics of Sshhhh! to weave a yarn of young love thwarted and re-kindled. Switching smoothly between two time periods, alternating moments of tenderness and sadness with slapstick and irony, Tell Me Something is a virtuoso technical achievement as well as a funny and sad tale of romance and treachery.
New readers will find themselves astonished at how deeply they come to identify with Jason's stylized, blank-eyed menagerie of characters, while those who shed a tear at Hey, Wait... will be somewhat prepared for the emotional wallops contained in this slender but perfect book in which every single line counts, and words are not needed.
Customer Reviews:
Still a mack..........2004-05-04
I really didn't know what to expect from this book other than that I would probably like it as I have Jason's other books. What surprised me is how Jason continues to successfully use these odd, "silent" comics to tell a fully realized story. Could he be the ultimate graphic artist? He's the cartoonist who is a storyteller in a universal language. Just follow the pictures in sequence and you're "reading" the story; with barely more than a few written words, you get it. Jason leaves me speechless!!!

Solid lad lit.......2005-11-20
This is the story of New York City sportswriter Jack Byrnes, a kind of endearing average Joe with an unusual problem. He keeps seeing his ex-girlfriends everywhere.
There's Danielle, his freshman girlfriend from college; Nikki, his first kiss; Amy, the girl he loved who only wanted to be friends; Mary Ann, whom he never really liked; and Connie, a recent girlfriend who disappeared for a month without an explanation.
Jack is approaching 30, and as he hashes out his love life in light-hearted discussions with his buddies Jeff and Bernie, he decides he needs some closure with these "relationship ghosts." So he contacts each of them, with mixed results. To complicate things, he has just met a girl he really, really likes, and Jeff's model girlfriend might be interested in him.
It's always refreshing to read about chick lit issues from a male perspective. Sometimes I got impatient with the men in the book because they seemed fratty and immature, but their hearts were in the right place (most of the time). Also, I occasionally got frustrated with Jack for not being clearer with his ex-girlfriends. He didn't really understand women sometimes.
Apart from those minor problems, this was an engaging account of a Manhattan man's attempt to make sense of the dating jungle and find a more permanent happiness.
Guys, Have no Fear.......2005-10-30
My girlfriend forced me to read this book, which I looked forward to as much as when she forced me to go see "Must Love Dogs." Unlike seeing that movie, though, I actually found myself enjoying this book. The interaction between Jack and his friends had me laughing out loud, and reading about the insane women from Jack's past had me reminiscing about some of the women I dated in college and after. There's plenty in here for guys to like, and you can even getting into avoid trouble by reading this book and actually enjoying it while your girlfriend tries to force you to watch "Gilmore Girls."
What a fun book!.......2005-10-25
When I saw this book, I jumped at the opportunity of getting a "guy's eye view" of love and relationships. It did not let me down. I loved hearing the conversations between Jack and his friends. This book was a great read and it gave me hope knowing that - just maybe - there are guys like Jack out there!
solid hunk lit tale .......2005-10-25
As he nears his thirtieth birthday, sportswriter Jack Byrnes wonders if he lost his mind when he starts seeing "ghosts" that he recognizes. He would not mind if the spirits were Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio or Mantle, but instead they the specters of the women he courted, bedded, and dumped without a look back. He begins to wonder if perhaps he must make amends so that he can get on with his life especially since he believes he has met his soulmate. His best friends Bernie and Jeff tease him but also commiserate with his plight; vino veritas allows for a lot of whining.
Jack decides to visit each female who haunts him to apologize for what he did to them. As he meets with one ex after another, he begins to believe that he was not the only cause for their break-ups as most are termagants with the only nice one a lesbian. His quest has not happened the way he anticipated, but Jack keeps on trekking.
The premise is terrific and the three amigos are fabulous when they get together. Jack's ghostly mission grips the audience as they expect to see him slowly (like Scrooge) evolve into a more compassionate, tolerant and understanding person. However, the problem is the women in his life were bigger losers than he ever was so instead of accountability and responsibility, he escapes to the next beer unscathed, leaving the audience to wonder where he finds these boneheads. Still this is a solid hunk lit tale that sub-genre fans will enjoy though the hero never gets his comeuppance.

GOOD LOVIN'
Lyrissa Rideau's determined to reclaim her legacy: a valuable heirloom that was stolen from her family decades ago. She's been hired to evaluate the art collection of the powerful Creole St. Denis family, and her goal seems close at hand, but there's a complication -- Noel St. Denis is giving her the eye. New Orleans's most eligible bachelor, the dusky, upper-crust dreamboat is used to getting anything he desires. And if Lyrissa's to succeed, she'll have to keep her own eye on the prize ... and off of Noel's fine, manly form!
What's up with the woman? The king of the brief, hot affair, CEO Noel's got the money, the power and enough sweet talk to charm any lady -- yet Lyrissa's the first to make him consider a permanent merger. He'd love to taste those luscious full lips, but it's also clear she's got something besides loving on her mind. Lyrissa thinks her secrets and her heart are safe, but she'd better watch out -- cause sexy Noel's coming on... with a passion!
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Story.......2006-11-12
I highly recommend this book. It's a good read and full of surprizises. Though the beginning is really hard to get into, I would encourage you to keep reading because the end is such a shocker.
Love Doesn't Comes Easy.......2006-06-26
This was sensational love novel among different cultures.I love the new relationship between Lyrissa and Noel Creole & African
American. Also, the learning of historical sites in "Big Easy".
Hopefully,it can comes back to its norms. There was alot of good parts in the novel. This aseasonal must read buy novel with 5 stars.
Art Undercover.......2003-01-26
Lyrissa Rideau has been given the job of trying to secure her family's treasured painting so she gets a job in the logical place for art to show up -- in an art dealer's shop.
Noel St. Denis' paths cross with Lyrissa's when he escorts his grandmother to the dealer's shop. Noel is very taken with Lyrissa and the feeling is mutual. However, Lyrissa's family reminds her of her obligation to family and also the commitment Noel has for his family.
"Tell Me Something Good" is about two young people who have certain family values they must honor, but who are thrown together and cannot so easily forget their feelings for each other. What will they do? Will they take "The Sunday Stroll" into paradise or will they let their families' problems dictate their lives? Read it to find out.
Ms. Emery has written another great book worth buying and reading!
Class Lines Can't Stop Love.......2002-08-11
Lyrissa Rideau's two aunts have always believed that now deceased members of the very wealthy Creole St. Denis family stole a painting from their family years ago. Through years of listening to her aunts discuss the painting and the thieving St. Denis family, Lyrissa is certain that the story is true. The painting is now valuable both financially and figuratively. The aunts hope that repossession of the painting will also elevate their social standing to where it once was before the family was duped by the St. Denis'.
Georgina St. Denis along with her grandson Noel, have hired the Taylor Gallery to pull the family art together and appraise the entire collection. As assistant to gallery owner Shelton Taylor, Lyrissa is in the perfect position to reclaim her families painting. However, Lyrissa soon finds herself being romanced by none other than handsome and persuasive Noel St. Denis, CEO of his families powerful company, Treme Corporation. Lyrissa rejects his advances but can't ignore her increasingly warming feelings toward Noel. He certainly is not what she expected from a St. Denis. But the romance will never get off the ground if Noel's grandmother or his long time friend Felice can stop it. Felice and Georgina St. Denis are cut from the same fabric and both believe that Lyrissa is not good enough for Noel.
As always Ms Emery's novels combine romance with intriquing plots, emotional truths and unexpected turns. 'Tell Me Something Good' is good reading.

The best!.......2002-07-28
This book was the best and I learned a lot about art history and even more about the relationships "Creole" blacks with other AAs's in Louisiana. The romance was excellent too,as was the plot, and I got a new sense of New Orleans even though I have visited it many times.I give it five stars and will read other books by Ms.Emery.
