Book Description

• Rich, warm, relaxed, natural—Adirondack camps, Western lodges, much more • Glowing photos of dozens of unique rustic homes from across North America • Spotlights craftspeople and creative forces in construction and décor • Great idea book for anyone looking to design or decorate a primary or second home

Used to be that "rustic" meant a dusty, dumpy cabin in the woods. No more! Rustic Revisited reveals today's rustic—contemporary design that celebrates the honesty of all-natural, local materials such as wood, twig, stone, and bark. Rustic structures often have the same finish on the exterior and the interior—for example, rough-hewn timber on both the outside and inside. The homes in Rustic Revisitedembrace the hand-crafted philosophy of rustic and show how to take that philosophy to new heights in a variety of styles, from the Adirondack camp to the Western lodge to the classic log cabin. Thirty unique homes, most planned by architects or interior designers, are showcased here, each lavishly photographed to allow readers exclusive access to interiors, exteriors, and noteworthy details in unusual rustic houses from New York to California, from Montana to Ontario, from North Carolina to Minnesota. These homes cover the full spectrum of rustic—renovations and new construction, traditional and cutting edge. A bonus chapter on decoration spotlights the craftspeople who are the creative forces of the movement.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book........2006-06-27

What a great book! I bought it to give as a gift and ended up keeping it for myself. It's filled with beautiful photos of rustic style in all its forms: including Adirondack camps, lake houses in Wisconsin, Western lodges and Southern cottages just to name a few. I got many good ideas from it, and will be buying more copies to give to friends. I highly recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2005-08-10

I have several books on rustic decorating and that type of thing. This book is one of my favorites. It's packed full of information, and acknowledges that the average person isn't going to be able to go out and furnish an entire house full of Bellinger paintings and antique Molesworth furniture. You will get a lot of ideas and have fun reading this book. But watch out...apparently this book is tasty for dogs, as my Bernese Mountain Dog loved it also! :-)

The beautifully illustrated collaboration of Dian Zillner and Suzanne Silverthorn, Cabin Style: Decorating With Rustic, Adirondack, And Western Collectibles is more than just another book of themed interior design ideas, it is also an invaluable and up-to-date price guide reference ideally organized for the benefit of do-it-yourself enthusiasts and collectors, as well as seasoned interior design professionals. Filled cover-to-cover with full-color photographs of rustic items ranging from wood canisters with pinecone designs to vintage fishing calendars and lanterns, and much more, each collectible is succinctly described with identification and manufacture information as well as a recommended appraisal of its value. Nearly all the articles presented are quite economical, going for $25 to $75 or so. An excellent sourcebook, Cabin Style is enjoyable simply to page through for inspiration.

    Book Description

Best-selling author and log home expert Robbin Obomsawin features the rustic and charming architecture of the Adirondack great camps of the Northeast in her newest book. Established during the early twentieth century by wealthy rail and oil barons such as the Vanderbilts and the Rockefellers, the Adirondack camps served as the preeminent playground for those who wanted to escape industrial city life and reconnect with nature. Today, these classic camps represent the best of rustic style.

3 out of 5 stars The Andirondack Camps & Mansions of Bygone Days........2006-09-03

In the late 19th century, the wealthy men who wanted to impress poured some of their money into large mansions like Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C., only in New York they opted for the "Adirondack style" with a rustic flavor. Floor plans for the cabins are included in this picture book complete with the history of this area. Later they were turned into camps for rich kids. Some of these camps such as Santanoni were operating for one hundred years, from 1850 to 1950. Only a few survive today.

Resort hotels sprang up during that era as retreats to nature from the environs of New York City. Hotel Champlain and Sagamore resorts for the luxury and culture of a period in U. S. history of radical change, are still operating. In Giles County in Middle Tennessee, we have such a place called the Milky Way Farm. Not much of the farm is intact, as parcels were sold to people who desired to live there, not to investors. However, the intriguing home built in the center of the property by the Mars family used local labor and is still open and splendid, inside and out. It has passed from mostly spectulators trying for a bed and breakfast or some such money-making operation. Some rooms are decorated in the style of the times using the original furnishings. The outside stone horse barns ahve disappeared, but the stone fences surrounding the fields leading up to the house which were built by the WPA workers, are still visible. The dining room used for special events has a round table built in that room, as it is too large to get through any of the doors. I ate there when Vo-Tech hosted a supper for public officials and the school's teachers and staff. I was part of the staff at that time. In New York, they are seen as relics of a bygone world of the super-rich. Built by and for the Rockefellers, Astors, Roosevelts, Vanderbilts, etc. who needed to escape the industrial city life and reconnect with nature. Now, there are million dollar homes there.

Santanoni is located hihg up in the peaks of the Adirondacks Mountains. The expanse is impressive and includes 12,500 acres in Newcomb. The main lodge build with a Japanese temple effect still shows the grandeur of the past as lived by the rich and famous.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty, Terrific Photos, but a Little Bland Here and There.......2006-03-23

I mostly buy more practical Adk books, but I thought it would be nice to have something more glossy ... a coffee-table type book for fun. I have to give the author major praise for including a great variety of camps/cabins, all the way from big, million-dollar homes down to tiny one-roomers. (There is even a section called "Small Gems," which is what I want to build, so I was very happy.) It is, I should also say, a beautiful book. Fabulous photos. I got lots of ideas about authentic Adk architectural touches, types of siding, interior ideas, etc. And I really appreciated that I didn't feel "outclassed," that it wasn't a book full of mansions. The text is pretty random, but all the same, I'm glad I bought it.

3 out of 5 stars Lots of Adirondack history but- - -.......2005-06-07

I feel that Robin Obomsawin did a much better job with her previous books by adding alot more pictures of the insides of the homes she wrote about. I was sadly disappointed that there were not more pictures of Adirondack homes. I have been very happy with her other books because of the beautiful pictures taken on the interiors, but this book was lacking in pictures of just that- interiors. I really looked forward to this book being released and bought it "sight unseen" and was deeply let down that inside the book, it lacked more pictures of cozy cabin retreats, showcasing all the rooms and decorating where I get my inspirations and ideas from. The author was very clear and informative on the adirondack history though and the building materials used on these types of houses.

          Book Description

Vengeance, money and murder are menacing companions when they meet in the quiet stillness of an Adirondack winter.

Texas Ranger Jack Galway knows his wife Susanna loves him, so when their marriage hits a rough patch, he supports her decision to take their teenaged daughters to Boston for a break. But now a couple of weeks has turned into several months and Jack has had enough. He wants his family back.

Ex-convict Alice Parker left a mess back in Texas, and she'll never forgive Jack Galway for killing her dream of ever becoming a Texas Ranger herself. Now, guided by greed and vengeance, she's got her sights set on his family.

Packing up the girls and her grandmother, Susanna heads to a cabin in the Adirondacks, trying to escape her fears, her secrets . . . and maybe even the man she loves. Little does she realize they are being followed, only this time by her husband . . . and a murderer.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Love it, love it!.......2006-06-17

So, in this continuation of the series of friends from Somerville, MA (Read the Carriage House first) Susanna has secrets she finds she can't share with her husband Jack, and afraid of what her emotions mean to their marriage - she "runs" away from him. When in danger he comes to her rescue only to find that she has to rescue him, too. Oh my gosh - Neggers is a hidden gem and this just continues my love of her books that I just can't put down! Just keep writing Carla!

2 out of 5 stars Susanna is an idiot.......2006-06-15

From time to time I read a book and dislike the heroine so much that I don't even care what happens to her. In this book, I didn't particularly dislike Susanna but I just flat didn't "get" her. A man is stalking her so instead of telling Jack, her husband who just happens to be a Texas Ranger, she packs up and moves from Texas to Boston. Then, even though she proclaims her deep love for her husband she just can't bring herself to return home to him and instead puts down strong roots in Boston at her grandmother's house and even purchases an isolated cabin several hours north of Boston.

Her husband learns of the danger she is in and goes to Boston to be with her and once again she sneaks off from him...this time running to the cabin. THEN, the woods around the cabin are crawling with bad guys, one of whom is a murderer and is also after her so instead of staying in the cabin where another Texas Ranger is there to keep her safe she decides to go cross-country skiing and surprise, surprise runs into the bad guy who, duh, tries to kill her. Now there's a surprise!

Okay, call me stupid, but if my husband were a CPA and I had an accounting problem, I probably would ask for his help. If my husband were a doctor and I had some sort of mystery ailment, I think I would ask for his opinion. And if my husband were a cop and I had some really bad guys after me, I believe I would see if my husband could help keep me safe!

Like I said, I just didn't GET Susanna. I think Ms. Neggers intended to portray Susanna as being so strong that she didn't need her husband. Unfortunately, she doesn't seem to understand that being strong sometimes means realizing when you need to turn to someone else for help. If Jack had been a brain surgeon and Susanna had learned she had a brain tumor, I wonder if she would have insisted on showing how strong she was by operating on herself.

Guess this is a book I won't be keeping.

          5 out of 5 stars Great one!!.......2005-08-09

THE CABIN is one of the most absorbing books I've read in a while. Susanna Galway is a complex character who suddenly has to deal with her own fears about how she's changed and what impact that'll have on her marriage -- all against a backdrop of murder and suspense. And she's such a strong character...I felt like I could both admire her and put myself in her shoes. I loved Jack Galway and how he figures out what's been going on with his wife. This is one of Carla's best.

1 out of 5 stars Can't make myself finish this book........2005-07-26

An unbelievable waste of time. There's no point in finishing the book. I can't feel for any of the characters or care what happens to them. One of the worst books I've ever attempted to read.

          1 out of 5 stars Insulting Read.......2005-07-22

If you see yourself as a strong, intelligent woman, DO NOT read this book. The 'heroine' is anything but! Her rationalizations of why not to report key information regarding a murderer to her 'wonderful Texas Ranger' husband, and her reluctance to 'clue' this hunk in on her lucrative business, is beyond any normal persons reasoning. And her teen aged daughters behaviors? Is anyone that foolish?
Oh, and can she possible squeeze "Texas Ranger" into anymore sentences...on the SAME page?
Normally I consider all books worth reading, but I'll not soon pick up another one of Carla's.

                Book Description

Ansel Adams has been called by many the greatest photographer of all. He proved most decisively that photography could be a major art form. His pictures, whether still life, portrait, or the landscape and nature studies for which he is is most famous, are all imbued with a poetic feeling, a poetry enhanced by the exceptional clarity of the images. Adams's work was part of a tradition of western American photography that began in the late 19th century and included the work of Carlton E. West, Edward Muybridge, and several Civil War photographers including Alexander Gardner, Timothy O'Sullivan and A.J. Russell, among others. Photographer Edward Curtis's ambitious 30-year documentation of eighty tribes west of the Mississippi came out of the same fascination with the region's grandeur and wildness and the drive to record it. Nature's glory shines through in this beautifully produced work, with over 280 photographs and a fascinating text by noted photographic historian Eva Weber. It will be treasured not only by legions of amateur photographers but by anyone interested in the history and beauty of the American West.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-04-14

This book is a fine introduction to some 19th c. landscape photographers of the American west, as well as Adams. The chapter "Views Aesthetic and Spiritual" has the best explanations of the key early 19th c. concepts "sublime," "picturesque," and "beautiful" that I have encountered. Weber is clearly extremely well informed about the subject and an excellent writer of a quality rarely enocuntered. This alone makes the book worth while, even without the pictures. (Everyone knows not to judge a book by its cover. I am amazed anyone would review a book based on the cover, or have the nerve to make such a review public.)

5 out of 5 stars An excellent collection.......2006-12-28

I think the only other review so far of this book dismisses it too quickly. It is actually an excellent collection of photographs with an insightful text. Many of the photographs are given a full page and I think this increases their impact over other books I considered buying. The photographs are, themselves, mesmerizing which is to be expected with a photography great such as Ansel Adams, but I also enjoyed being introduced to the work of other artists with whom I was not familiar. Together, it is a complete collection of photography for those who are interested in black and white photography (as I am), landscape photography, or even (I would think) just the American West.

1 out of 5 stars Cover design an insult to Adams.......2003-03-06

Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover! Here Adams' photograph has been downgraded from work of fine art to mere "design element." This is a sure sign of a schlocky book -- no publisher with any clue about fine art would ever obliterate an artist's creation by placing three other pictures on top of it. To do so violates one of the cardinal rules of fine art publishing.

After killing Superman and before marrying him, what else could Dan Jurgens do? Kill Supes' human alter ego that's what! The Death of Clark Kent finds the Man of Steel under siege by Conduit; a super villain who emits Kryptonite radiation. Back in the day, Clark and Conduit, AKA Kenny Braverman, were friends, but poor old Kenny got tired of always being second fiddle to Clark, so he devises a plot (if that's what you want to call it) to ruin Clark's life. Whether that means killing his beloved Lois, his parents in Smallville, or anyone else associated with him. And even though Clark gets notes and messages saying "I Know", he doesn't seem too concerned with any of this; even when Lois goes missing and is presumed dead. Yeah, as you can tell by now by reading that synopsis, Death of Clark Kent is far from the best Superman title you'll read. Like he did with the Death of Superman trilogy trades, Jurgens has a cadre of writers and artists here like veteran Roger Stern and Karl Kesel; which explains the inconsistent tone present throughout the story and art. Not to mention that the overall tone of the story doesn't grip you whatsoever. We know that no matter what, Superman will come out on top and everything will be okay. The one good thing to say about Jurgens' Death of Superman books was that at least they are gripping. This TPB on the other hand, is about as far from gripping as it could get. For completests only; there are far more better Superman collections out there that are more worth your time and cash.

Okay, sure it ends, but SUPERMAN: THE DEATH OF CLARK KENT is one heck of a tedious read. In Superman's Silver Age adventures, it seemed that every character, hero or villain had some connection to Smallville. Crisis on Infinite Earths did away with this, but now we are presented with Kenny Braverman, former childhood friend of Clark Kent, now his bitter rival. Kenny knows that Clark and Superman are one and the same, and this makes all of Kenny's second-place finishes to Clark that much worse. Through an interesting course of events, Kenny has the ability to emit kryptonite radiation, so he becomes the supervillain Conduit, somehow amassing an army of armored assassins, robot doubles, and spies to destroy the lives of Superman and those he loves. What ensues is a 300-page mindless string of battles, with deceptive outcomes and flimsy twists shoving the story to a conclusion about which I was hard-pressed to care. What's more, throughout the story, Clark doesn't seem to care all that much, either. If Superman's life and loved ones are at risk, then by thunder, have him show a little emotion! As far as Clark knows, Lois has been killed in a collapsing building, but he sure doesn't seem too concerned. He'd rather dance around with numerous robotic doubles of Conduit than actually do something to safeguard the people that mean the most to him... but then I guess no one would be at risk and DC wouldn't have been able to get enough mileage out of this story (again, it's THREE HUNDRED PAGES!!!). The bottom line on the story is that it's lazy, uninspired, turgid writing from Dan Jurgens, Louise Simonson, Karl Kesel, Roger Stern, and David Michelinie. Sturdy art is provided by the standard crew of mid-`90s Superman artists Jurgens, Jon Bogdanove, Stuart Immonen, and Jackson Guice, plus the legendary Gil Kane. So just based on the writing, THE DEATH OF CLARK KENT is the only Superman trade from this period that I can't recommend.

1 out of 5 stars The horror, the horror!.......2001-01-14

This book is absolutely horrible. I bought it on SALE in a local comic shop and thank God it was discounted! I went home and read it and haven't reread it since. I wouldn't re-open this graphic novel if I was super-bored! This is absolutely the worst Superman trade paperback (well, The Marriage of Superman is also Horrendous) so ONLY buy this if it is discounted. I am not a fan of Dan Jurgen's Superman. He killed Superman, remember? And brought him back. He married Superman. And he killed Clark Kent? Geez, if he's trying to make his mark on Superman, I'd suggest he come up with something creative. Now, he's not the prime writer in this trade paperback, but you can see the indecision around here. There is no unity or solid storytelling with this whole group of writers. Superman never looked so confusing and lost and the writers go off and kill his identity?? This is a major no buy. Buy it if you are a die-hard Superman fan. Buy it if you are missing these issues and cannot find them in the .50 cent bin. Buy this if you are a collector of graphic novels. Buy this if you are curious. But if you are looking for a great read, I'd suggest you look elsewhere (ie, anything NON-Dan Jurgens)

Now don't get me wrong. It was as enjoyable as any other mediocre comic book, but not worth the money. Read the 'Death of Superman' et al series if you really want to see Clark die! ...and die he does!

3 out of 5 stars What went wrong..........1999-10-04

Don't get me wrong; I love the TPB. The only thing is that it left too many questions unanswered. Q1: What happened to Jimmy? His kidnapping was never resolved. Q2: Who was that guy that looked a lot like Conduit that we see in the comic after Braverman's death?

OK. Not that many questions. But I think I've cracked the shell. If there's one thing I don't like it's open endings. I know the Luthor bit at the end make it open, too, but that I can accept.

Other than these things, the comic was great.

My 11-year-old son read this first, as he is a huge Superman fan. Unlike most of the Superman books, however, with this one he lingered for a long time, really savoring the graphic novel. When he was done, he came to me and said, "Mom, you really HAVE to read this!" Then he read it again about a week later.

When I read it, I understood his absorption, and also why it took longer to read than most comics. First, there is a LOT of history squeezed into the book. While I agree with one reviewer that it strains credulity that the Kent family should encounter practically EVERY important historic personage of the period, I felt that it made excellent dramatic sense. As a homeschooler, I loved how it summarized the historic period for my son. Yes, it is a bit violent, but appropriate to the subject matter. There is no gratuitous violence; rather, the characters and events demonstrate the value of human life and decry the lives lost to war and prejudice.

The book is thought-provoking. The art is superb. All of the artists are wonderful; the change of artists did not bother me in the least. The fictitious Kent characters were well-rounded, much less one-dimensional than most comic book characters. I was heavily invested in the story of Nathaniel by 3/4 of the way through; I literally couldn't put the book down because I wanted to find out what happened to them!

                    5 out of 5 stars A SUPER Western.......2006-04-21

The Kents is not about the relationship between Clark Kent and his father Jonathan. It is a mini series regarding Jonathan's kin in 1880's Kansas. It has very little to do with the Supermen legend, and there are hints of the BIG RED S thrown in .

John Ostrander has done his research. This western saga is well told. This could be told in a regular novel format, it is better as a graphic novel. Ostrander's storytelling ability is excellent. Even without the Superman family name, this could be the next best western on film, if some studio would take notice

The art of Timothy Truman is amazing, and I do not use that word lightly. The classic artistic style that Truman has used in previous westerns makes this graphic novel a force to savor and enjoy. His work seems to pop off the pages, like 3-D. I always get humbled on what he does with his art on his projects, including his turns on Jonah Hex graphic novels

                    good work...enjoy

3 out of 5 stars Big DC continuity flaw..........2005-01-14

The Kents is basically a pastiche of Civil War-era history, a name-dropping who's who that also tries to achieve the scope of The Sacketts. Tim Truman's artwork is great as always (his Bloody Bill Anderson and young Jesse James are both easily worth the cover price). In fact, the only problem I have with the series is its representation of Jonah Hex; he received the scar on the right side of his face AFTER the Civil War, when he returned to the tribe of Apaches with whom he had spent the latter part of his childhood.

                    5 out of 5 stars A truly epic western.......2003-02-07

An epic graphic novel with as much heart as Larry McMurtry's novel "Lonesome Dove." This book details the history of the family that would one day shape the attitude and spirit of Clark Kent.

This book is also enjoyable for people who have never experienced graphic fiction before, as my wife will attest.

2 out of 5 stars An interesting concept poorly executed........2000-12-14

While I liked the concept behind "The Kents", the book contains two of my biggest pet peeves; the artist changed midstream, and there were entirely too many famous people portrayed.

I'm a fan of Tim Truman's work. His work on "Jonah Hex: Two Gun Mojo" and "Scout" are wonderful examples of realistic, quality comic art. I don't know why he didn't illustrate the last few chapters of "The Kents", but the change in artwork and style was jarring and unfortunate.

My other problem with "The Kents" deals with the overabundance of cameos from historical figures. Many movies about the old west commit this same artistic sin. Just because you set a story during the Civil War doesn't mean that your characters are going to run into everyone you've read about in high school. John Ostrander does his best to shoehorn all of their appearances in, but they still feel forced.

In spite of the inconsistent artwork, and the hackneyed cameos, I did enjoy the book's structure. Having Pa Kent send Clark packets of discovered historical documents worked well in comic book's episodic form. I only wish that the story didn't play out like the "Civil War's Greatest Hits".
