a must have for any pottery collector and artist.......2007-09-26
this is a beautiful book the the pictures in the book are so vivid and colorful, it would make a wonderful addition to any library or it would make a great coffee table book!
visual journey into the past.......2007-07-20
I was impressed with the display groupings presented and the journey of the authors beginnings of his collections and the knowledge he aquired along the way. He gave good advice to new collectors. I open it daily and alway see something I missed. It's a great book to add to your collection.
Excellent overview of every pueblo's pottery.......2005-08-10
I'd been looking for a book like this for ages. It goes through every pueblo's pottery, describing the special characteristics of each, and talks about the important potters in each pueblo.
This is very well written in an easy going, non-snobish style, instantly increasing your depth of knowledge in southwestern pottery. The photographs are excellent and plentiful, giving many diverse examples from each pueblo/region/era.
Highly recommended for those new to collecting. I gave a copy to my parents in New Mexico, and even though they had been doing a bit of collecting for years, they have a much better understanding of the history of some of the pottery sitting on their shelves. They love this book.
A Great Place to Start.......2003-02-27
This is an excellent book for both the beginner or serious student of Southwestern Pottery. It gives examples of all styles, types, and designs, making it easy for anyone to understand what makes each Pueblo's pottery unique. Perhaps not as "in depth" as some others, this book is easily the best book out there today as far as explaining and illustrating the basics. It really is an indispensable guide and reference book. The authors are regular guys rather than scholars, so it is easy and enjoyable to read, and filled with great photos of their quite amazing collections. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a place to begin learning about Southwestern Pottery.
A must for pottery collectors and fans.......2002-01-26
An excellent introduction and reference on Southwestern pottery. The authors cover each of the major styles and pueblos, with history, anecdotes, and great color pictures.
They also have a delightful approach to collecting, emphasizing pieces that teach something or appeal to them, rather than perfect (and expensive!) museum-quality work.

Book Description
This oversize book captures, in brilliant, full color bleed illustrations, the diversity and beauty of one of the world's most popular tourist havens. Photographer Yann Arthus Bertrand spent several months in a helicopter all over Turkey, photographing its renowned Greco-Roman ruins in Ephesus and Pergamon, dramatic mountains, and dazzling coastline that is a mecca for international yachtsmen. Also here are the stunning mosques, churches and palaces of Istanbul--once capital of the Ottoman sultans and center of one of the most powerful empires of all time.

Great Photographs.......2007-01-24
This book has some of the nicest aerial photos of Turkey that I have seen. My only gripe is that some of the potentially most interesting locations such as the north eastern Black Sea coast of Turkey have not made their way into this book and that is a shame. It does, however do a wonderful job of presenting the regions that are included.
Great Photos of Exotic Sites.......2006-02-26
I have not yet travelled in Turkey, but it would take months of difficult itineraries to see everything depicted in this book. Asia Minor (or Anatolia) was the crossroads of ancient civilizations, and I doubt if any nation is so rich in historic sites. From the ruins of Troy to the glory of the Hellenistic Age, from being the wealthiest area of the Roman Empire to its Byzantine glory, and from its crusader castles to the splendour of Islamic rule, Turkey defines and distills the very essence of civilization, and this book, with its oversized, full-page color photos, is a worthy introduction to all Turkey has to offer.
Great shots.......2002-09-07
I bought this book in advance of a trip that we were making to Turkey. I wanted my children to get a taste of what it would look like. I was looking for a book with good pictures of scenery, landmarks, people, places and things and it fit the bill perfectly.
Nice pictures, ignorant commentary.......2000-06-27
There is no doubt that Yann Arthus-Bertrand is a brilliant photographer. The pictures of Sultan Ahmet mosque, the Hagia Sophia, and Suleymaniye Mosque are simply stunning. One thing I was looking for and couldn't find were pictures of Northern Turkey (the Black Sea coast). That was a bit disappointing. Also, I was disappointed and upset with Janine Trotereau's commentary. To claim that democracy in Turkey, and I quote, "has not been able to establish itself with solidity and permanence" is flat out misleading. I am not claiming that the transition from the rule of the Ottoman monarchy to democracy has been smooth or is by any means complete. What I fail to see is a single nation in the history of the world that has made such transitions in its political system of such great magnitude "overnight" without a hitch. Show me a single country that exists today where democracy, meaning government by the people, was not threatened at some point in its history for one reason or another! You can't! In its brief history, the Republic of Turkey has been moving, however slowly and painfully, towards achieving more and more democracy. The problems it faces down the road are not much different than the problems faced by many of the nations that claim to rule through a functioning democracy. So buy the book for the pictures but do your reading on Turkish politics somewhere else!
Turkey - Mesmerizing Beauty.......2000-06-19
There are few books that can aspire to depict Turkey with such style. This book captures the essence of the country from the air yet strikes many a chord in those who have been to Turkey. I relived my trip thanks to the amazing photos which are much better than a similar title also in print. I recommend it to those wanting to get a glimpse of what marvels this country holds.

Description:
The contents of heavy metal accumulated by air pollution in the cedar tree needles from the green area of Konya city centre were measured by chemical analyses. The needle samples were collected from two types of trees (about 10-15 and 20-25-years-old trees) from eight different pollution regions for two different sampling periods. Results of sulphur dioxide and particle matter analyses were used for measurement of air pollution effect on accumulation of heavy metals in the vegetation. Contents of heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Zn, Co, Cr, Cd and V) were determined for sampling periods, tree ages and sampling places. Results of the present study showed that accumulations of heavy metals in the old trees were generally higher than those of young trees. Similarly, heavy metal contents of needles collected in spring 2004 were higher than those of needles collected in autumn 2003. Accumulation of heavy metals via sulphur dioxide pollution and particle matter originated from usage of low quality fossil fuels, which might affect the living organisms in the city centre. On the other hand, Pb levels in the samples from Karatay Industry Park (3.53ppm in 2004) showed that people are health living around the industry, and heavy traffic area is under risk. According to the other sampling areas, the chromium levels were also very high around the Chrome-Magnesite Factory Garden (87.15ppm in 2004); it could be a toxic risk for people working around the factory. The heavy metal levels obtained from the other samples were not as high a risk level for the living organisms in the sampling areas.

Description:
Even though dry deposition and air-water exchange of semivolatile organic compounds (SOCs) are important for surfaces in and around the urban areas, there is still no generally accepted direct measurement technique for dry deposition. In this study, a modified water surface sampler (WSS) configuration, including a filter holder and an XAD-2 resin column, was employed to investigate the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) dry deposition in an urban area. The measured total (particle+dissolved) PAH fluxes to the WSS averaged to be 34960+/-16540ngm^-^2d^-^1. Average particulate PAH flux, determined by analyzing the filter in the WSS, was about 8% of the total PAH flux. Temporal flux variations indicated that colder months (October-April) had the highest PAH fluxes. This increase could be attributed to the residential heating as well as meteorological effects including lower mixing height. A high volume air sampler was concurrently employed to collect ambient air concentrations. The average total (gas+particle) atmospheric PAH concentration (456+/-524ngm^-^3) was within the range of previously measured values at different urban locations. PAH concentrations in urban areas are more than two orders of magnitude higher than those measured in pristine areas and this result may indicate that urban areas have major source sectors and greater deposition rates are expected near to these areas. The average contribution of particle phase was about 10% in total concentration. Simultaneous particulate phase dry deposition and ambient air samples were collected in this study. Then, particulate phase apparent dry deposition velocities were calculated using the fluxes and concentrations for each PAH compound and they ranged from 0.1 to 1.2cms^-^1. These values are in good agreement with previously reported values.

Description:
This paper presents the air pollutant emission inventory of primary pollutants for Izmir, which is a highly industrialized area situated in the western part of Turkey. A proper emission inventory is very important for planning pollution control programs, particularly in coastal sites like Izmir, where environmental quality is of growing concern owing to their typical meteorological conditions. The sources were broadly classified as point, line and area sources in a systematic way. The data on activity levels of industries, fuel consumption in vehicles and domestic activities along with the respective emission factors were used for estimating the emissions for the year 2000. The results showed that industry is the most polluting sector for sulfur dioxide (SO"2) in the study area contributing about 88% of total emissions. On the other hand, domestic heating is the most polluting sector contributing about 56% of total PM emissions while traffic has the highest portion for NO"X emissions. Especially, emissions from industries located outside the metropolitan city center are much higher in amount. Industries located around the Izmir metropolitan center contribute to the industrial SO"2 emissions by 93%, PM emissions by 59% and NO"X emissions by 80% of the total.

Description:
The most economic air conditioning of living and working places can be achieved by natural ventilation if sufficient. This provides not only the circulation of clear air, but also the decrease of indoor temperature, especially, during hot summer days, provided that the temperature of clear air is lower than that of indoor. From the geometric optimization point of view, both size and position of windows in buildings are important parameters to obtain a uniform indoor air velocity distribution. In this study, the potential use of natural ventilation as a passive cooling system in new building designs in Kayseri, a midsize city in Turkey located at 38.44^oN and 35.29^oW, was investigated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Using the FLUENT 6.2 program, which employs finite element methods, indoor air velocity distributions with respect to changing wind direction and magnitude were obtained in living places of different dimensions. The simulation results suggest that natural ventilation can be used to provide a thermally comfortable indoor environment during the summer season in the study area. The study presents useful design guidelines for natural ventilation at both site planning and individual building levels.

Description:
About 80% of the electric energy production in Turkey is provided by thermal power plants which use fossil fuels. Lignite, the most abundant domestic energy source, is consumed in most of these plants. Turkey has approximately 0.85% of the world's lignite reserves; however, the Turkish lignites have low calorific value and contain relatively higher amounts of ash, moisture, and sulfur. Nearly 80% of the lignite mined in Turkey is consumed in the thermal power plants since it is not appropriate for use in other types of industry and heating. In Turkey, 13 large-scale lignite-fired thermal power plants are responsible for a considerable amount of air pollution. Therefore, it is crucial to decide on the optimal place and technology for the future thermal power plants, and to equip the currently operating plants with newer technologies that will reduce amount of contaminants released into the air. In this study, the effects of the lignite-fired thermal power plants which have an important place in the energy politics in Turkey on the air pollution are investigated. We focused on SO"2 pollution and the regions in which the SO"2 emissions were concentrated and diffused. The pollutant diffusion areas were projected and mapped based on parameters such as wind data, isotherm curves, population density, and topographic features by using Geographical Information System (GIS) software, ArcView. The contribution of the thermal power plants to SO"2 pollution was also examined.

The further adventures of Mo, her tenure-bound girlfriend, Sydney, and their much-loved friends unfold against a shifting gender landscape: lesbians sleeping with men, lesbians becoming men, Ginger sleeping with lesbians who've become men. As with her eight previous collections, Alison Bechdel covers a host of pressing issues, from the Monica Lewinsky scandal to the decline of the independent bookstore, and pauses to consider whether an online affair qualifies as cheating. "Of course it's cheating!" says Mo, "It would be a diversion of emotional energy." Sydney demurs: "It's more like remote, interactive masturbation." True love survives the gender wars, but monogamy may be on the wane. Don't miss the thrilling details, in the last volume of Bechdel's work to be published by the now-defunct Firebrand Press. --Regina Marler
Customer Reviews:
Best DTWOF yet.......2003-10-30
This is without doubt the best yet of the series. I got hooked on the third book when I "came out" in college, and have kept up over the years. I re-read all of them regularly (the mental equivalent of comfort food-- definitely better than "Friends" re-runs) and enjoy seeing how Bechdel's artistic talent, human insight, and compassion grow over time. For those who are new to the series, it might be a good idea to start with this one (to get hooked on the artist's gifts at their current height), then go back and re-read them all in chronological order, so as to see the development both of characters and of creative talents. The whole series creates an immensely rich and beautiful portrait of human lives. Despite having one thing in common--a non-mainstream life--the characters are nonetheless extremely varied and individual, and their interactions are rich and real.
Like previous books, this one includes an "appendix" of sorts at the end, with extra material about the characters--deeper stories that wouldn't fit into the shorter two-page format. It is the appendix in this book that makes it "the best yet." Jezanna's story-- coming to terms with her mother's death and her Dad's dating--is incredibly moving and extremely true-to-life in so many subtle ways. In graphic art as in film acting, it takes skill to portray a character's emotions, but it takes even more skill to portray a character's emotions that they are hiding from themselves (such as when Jezanna's dad returns from the bathroom and, uncomfortable at catching a private moment of grief, pretends not to notice and tries to return everything to "normal" as fast as possible--don't we all have people in our lives who cope with difficult emotions this way?).
As always, the subtletly, humanity and overall compassion that infuse this strip make it a must-read for anyone of any political persuasion.
Dykes grow up.......2001-02-04
It would have been a major feat for Bechdel to keep the pace of her first books. The novelty bloom has faded some. Bechdel has courageously taken the route of allowing her characters to age. And the series has to pay the price for it. But this is for the best as we do age too and our affection toward Bechdel's cast grows since we can relate to them, no matter whether we are men or women. When Clarice and Toni try to raise their son in suburbia, their life has gotta become duller, even if it is still more exiting than their neighbour's life. Food for thought for us aging homos. It is a tribute to Bechdel talent that she weathers this transition and manages to bring more than the occasional flash of brilliance that she has shown on her previous work. It bodes well for the future as the excitement in the life of her heroines will come back when their progenies start dating, retirement planning becomes a priority, dates are not as easy too find, "remedial" surgery might be considered, etc... I, for one, will make sure that I do not miss a beat.
More, more, more.......2001-01-07
In the latest collection by Bechdel of her award-winning series"Dykes to Watch out for", she chronicles the lives of hercharacters with wit, intelligence, and charm. I am continually amazedat Bechdel's ability to educate readers through her characters, especially about grassroots politics and modern dyke life. My favoritepart of this particular book is about Lois and her attraction to afemale-to-male transsexual. Wait, it's really about how Mo and Sydneyhave... while each is at work. Umm, no, it's... Well, I just can'tpick one! I love it all.
Bechdel's out of the box!.......2000-07-28
Alison Bechdel's characters go beyond binary thinking in this latest DTWOF collection. Transgenderism, bisexuality, and polyamory are all explored...honestly, believably, and as thoroughly as possible in a slim volume like this one.
I've read all of Bechdel's collections (in order no less), and this one is far and away the most impressive. As Mo, Clarice, Lois, Sparrow, Toni, Ginger, Jezanna, and others grow in their relationships, they realize that life is not always as clear-cut as it seems, and they learn to look beyond the surface level to the meaning of words like "lesbian," "woman," "partner." It's delightful to see the explorations and reactions of characters to stimuli such as a male housemate in the Lois-Ginger-Sparrow household, or the struggling-to-understand conservative neighbors in Toni and Clarice's new suburban neighborhood.
As always, the artwork is fantastic, and the stories are compelling. These are simply some of the finest comics being drawn today.
impressive -- major talent.......2000-06-15
Another infusion of Mo and the gang, for those of us who don't get it daily.
(If you're new to DTWOF, I recommend reading all the books -- in chrono order.)
Just maybe the best one yet, as the characters and the issues they face become more mature and multi-faceted.
Terrific artwork.
Among the many impressive, and funny, installments is one ("leadership vacuum", p. 20) in which Mo has to slap Bechdel around a little.
And the long story that closes the book, following all the dailies, is *brilliantly* orchestrated. I think it's the best one of those yet.
Way to go, Alison Bechdel. I was sorry to finish the book -- I want more!
