Book Description
Landscape architecture today is one of the most active and revolutionary areas of design. With environmental awareness at an all-time high, landscape designers are reshaping our surroundings, from small-scale private gardens to large-scale public squares. Drawing on a broad palette of ideas and concepts, and presenting entirely new ways of seeing, interpreting, and designing a "landscape," the book is organized into seven themes that comprise today's most important issues and techniques: light and color, movement, order and objects, interaction, new contexts, urban interventions, and narrative. Each chapter is illustrated with works by such internationally known designers and architects as Fernando Caruncho, Adriaan Geuze, Janis Hall, Reiser + Umemoto, Peter Walker, and Makoto Sei Watanabe.
A comprehensive and challenging evaluation of the present and a compendium of ideas for the future, Radical Landscapes suggests an unexpected variety of ways in which we might interact dynamically and in harmony with the great outdoors. 433 illustrations, 313 in color.

Gardens Illustrated Review.......2002-05-01
From the Feb. 2002 issue of Gardens Illustrated magazine:
"...the book is a compelling and beautifully written discussion on contemporary landscape design. A book about any other field of design would probably not include the rather self-conscious word "radical" in the title, but its use here is indicative of the generally reactionary nature of most open space design... there are a few valient souls out there trying to change this state of affairs, and this book chronicles some of the best...Amidon writes, 'Among the creators of radical landscapes it is difficult to find common threads,' but her strategy is broadly successful in organizing this diverse selection of landscape designers and their work."
a hodge podge pictorial.......2002-01-10
There is nothing 'radical' about any of the projects here. Nice they are, I'll give you that. But only nice. Nothing a professional in the field could not come up with. The picture quality is less than tops, and there are even teeny-weeny unreadable B&W photos that are attached to supposedly famous names. It kind of gives you the impression that the author was either running out of material to fill the book with or had too many friends who wanted a piece of the action.
If the only thing in common that is supposed to hold all the projects under one roof is that they are all 'radical', well, the author ought to choose another word, even if a more etymological meaning was intended by it (Radix, Latin, root).
I bought it at full retail price and feel I've been jipped, but at half the price, I suppose it's worth having...It's a CATALOGUE, basically.
Book Description
Sumi-e is the classic painting style of Japan, and its graceful simplicity is admired around the world. A natural follow-up to the best-selling The Sumi-e Book, The Sumi-e Dream Book demonstrates how to take the classic brushstrokes of sumi-e to a new level of painting, where creativity is inspired by deeply felt memories and spiritual expression. First, sumi-e artist Yolanda Mayhall provides a brief history and explains the philosophy behind this classic Japanese painting style. She highlights its many masters, one of them her ancient mentor the master brush painter, woodblock, and dream journey artist Hokosai. Next, she reviews the classic materials and the basic brushstrokes of sumi-e known as the Four Gentlemen: Bamboo, Wild Orchid, Chrysanthemum, and Plum Branch, along with their variations. Finally, Mayhall puts it all together to demonstrate the sumi-e art of dream journey painting. Readers will learn a variety of creative and exciting techniques for using color to add a delightful dimension to the sumi-e image as well as discover exciting techniques for visually capturing important life memories and spiritual reflections in a painting.

The Semi-e Dream book.......2007-05-12
Its ok but I thought it was going to be more step by step and its not. Good book thow.
A Bit Shallow.......2006-11-11
Very nice pictures and some good description on Sumi-e dreamjourney painting. However, as an artist looking for more detailed explanations on techniques, I was quite disappointed. If I was just interested in general ideas on this type of painting the book would be great, but as an artist I was disappointed in the way the material was presented. For example, loading the brush was glossed over.
Good paintings, but not sumi-e.......2005-01-19
This book might be interesting as some artistic approach to make paintings. the paintings are not bad. But they are not sumi-e. They are rather aquarelle, that mimics eastern paintings.
IMHO the key thing, that makes Yolanda paintings look different is her technique of brushstokes, which are very typical to the western aquarelle school. The original sumi-e brushstrokes are based on brushstokes of chinese (well, and japanese as well) calligraphy, and this is one of the characteristics that variate paintings of differnt masters.
Still, the book text is a good transcription of sumi-e/brush painting concept. Just for the painting examples I'd suggest to look at the works of the "original" artists.
A real "dream" for those interested in Sumi-e Painting.......2004-04-09
Being an afficionado of Chinese Brush painting, I was intrigued when I first saw this book. I'm not easily impressed by art books, and I've reviewed hundreds over the years, but this is one of those books that actually surprised me. It really is a dream for artists intersted in the brush painting of China and Japan. Here's why...
Mayhall's style is both beautiful and spontaneous, and the imagery in this book is breathtaking. What is really refreshing about this book, however, is that it isn't just another *how to* brush technique book. While she does go into great detail on history, materials, technique, and subject matter, the artist puts you into the mindset of a Sumi-e artist. Rather than simply show her readers "how" to paint, Mayhall encourages them to begin their own journey into Sumi-e "dream" painting, and equips them with the knowledge necessary to find their own artistic voice. She states, "it is not only the subject that gives life to art, it is the spirit that is within the artist's genius." Well said!
Material covered in this text includes:
* Chapter 1 - A Brief History of Sumi-e
* Chapter 2 - Studying the Dream Journey Painters of China and Japan
* Chapter 3 - Starting on Your Own Dream Journey (tools, brush strokes)
* Chapter 4 - Practicing the Four Gentlemen (bamboo, wild orchid, chrysanthemum, plum branch)
* Chapter 5 - Beginning the Creative Process (incorporating the four gentlemen)
* Chapter 6 - Learning Advanced Brush Strokes for Birds & Flowers (Yo birds, iris, hummingbirds & its flowers)
* Chapter 7 - Internalizing the Three Essential Elements of Sumi-e (creativity, composition, color)
* Chapter 8 - Planning the Journey (sketching, structure, Exploring new techniques, beginning your dream journey)
* Chapter 9 - Dreaming (more ideas & demonstrations)
* Chapter 10 - Enhancing Your Dream Paintings (calligraphy)
If you're interested in the brush painting style of China and Japan, or would like to incorporate these techniques into your watercolor and/or ink painting, I recommend this book along with "Chinese Painting Techniques for Exquisite Watercolors" by Lian Quan Zhen... two excellent books to inspire you and bring your own artistic dreams to life.
Friend and admirer.......2003-07-17
As a long time friend and collector of Yolanda's beautiful paintings, I was overjoyed to see her latest book. I have found it to be not only well organized and illustrated but written in a style that is easily understood and followed. The inclusion of historical and contemporary works accompanied by poetic translations elevates the instructional format to a book to be cherished for its contribution to understanding the mysterious and ancient culture of Japan.

Informative, explanatory, detailed and with beautiful images! Definitely a good buy if you would like to start sumi-e.
The best of many western books on this subject.......2003-02-24
I have been teaching and practicing this artform (Chinese Brush Painting) for about 5 years and have found this among the very best of the available books on the subject. Ms. Frame takes us through the basics, with descriptions of the materials and brushstrokes that one can actually follow and put into practice -all the time keeping true to the tradition. She then takes us beyond the basics with lovely projects incorporating colour along with the ink. I would highly recommend this book along with Ning Yeh's instruction books and videos for anyone seriously interested in learning the techniques of this beautiful artform.

Great book for beginning sumi-e painting -.......2000-11-09
I found this book very helpful. I have a number of books on sumi-e, and I found that this book shows how to do the sumi-e brush strokes more specifically and clearly than other books I've read. It describes the materials you need, and shows how to use the sumi ink and brush to paint a variety of different subjects. I recommend it!
Book Description
Through his student Kay Morrisey Thompson, master calligrapher Ukai Uchiyama teaches readers the language of sumi-e, the distinctive Japanese calligraphy which combines Zen spirituality and boldly mimetic natural images. This beautiful volume, winner of the Good Design Award from the American Booksellers Association, offers striking illustrations in black and white and color of its lessons on the practice and philosophy of sumi-e. Readers are encouraged to learn about the bamboo-handled brushes and ink sticks, experiment with simple naturalistic forms, and explore the history and spiritual foundation of an art form which this book makes accessible to Westerners for the first time.
Customer Reviews:
Sumi-e Detail Lacking.......2006-11-11
While this book was informative about Sumi-E it did not give detailed information regarding technique. It is more of a general overview rather than something an artist already skilled in the medium can use.
Inspiring and Informative-Great text for Students!.......2002-10-31
Any intelligent student of Japanese Brush Painting will recognize the importance of
Kay Morrisey Thompson's stunning book "The Art and Techniques of Sumi-e" which
has been in demand since 1960 and has been awarded the Good Design Award by the
American Booksellers Association. Her text is beautifully written and clearly
moves the student along from the basics into the impressionistic world of
Sumi-e.
One cannot "lump" Chinese art and Sumi-e(a Japanese style) together or they will have completely missed the inspiring philosophy and impressionistic link with
Shodo ( Japanese calligraphy) as illustrated by the artist Sensei Uchiyama. All
Dedicated Sumi-e students should realize that their goal is to first master and understand their
basic strokes and then personalize this artform to reflect their individualizm. Although brush painting originated in China, the Japanese Zen Buddhist priests adapted it to their culture. Therefore, the word
"Sumi-e-"is a Japanese word describing a Japanese style of painting. It's
meaning "ink picture" is a very broad term which allows the student to be creative.
To understand this very complex ancient art the student
must read and explore as many available books as possible about brush painting to broaden his or her
horizons. This book should definitely be on the student's "Must Have" list.
A Grand Title for a Rubbish Book.......2002-10-11
Any person hoping to learn the art of Sumi-e will be poorly served by this book.
All the illustrations are hurried and rough. The author tries to explain this away by stating that the illustrations were hurried through for inclusion in the book.
Absolute rubbish!!Any reasonable Sumi-e or Chinese painter can do a very quick but quite beautiful painting.
If you want two very good examples of books to buy then look no further than "Chinese Painting Techniques" by Alison Stilwell Cameron, or "Chinese Painting Techniques for Exquisite Watercolors" by Lian Quan Zhen.
Both these books are superb.
I own all three of the titles here and can truly say that "The Art and Technique of Sumi-e.." is very poorly presented and I never use or read it.
Excellent instructions, beautiful illustrations.......2000-05-03
This is an excellent book for any student of Japanese ink painting. The author's clear instructions focus on technique as well as the spiritual side of sumi-e. The illustrations are exceptionally beautiful & worth the price alone.
The book starts out by discussing materials as well as a student's mindset. Line brush strokes, washes and calligraphy brushwork are then detailed & illustrated.
The author then talks about the four gentlemen of Japan. They include the orchid, bamboo, plum & chrysanthemum. Because they are so varied, practicing these has really helped my paintings improve.
Many other subject types are covered. Some include grass, flowers, trees, fruits, vegetables, birds, and animals. Landscape element techniques encompass rocks, clouds and mountains.
Book Description
“This study of Japanese ink painting is as much about philosophy and poetry as it is about putting brush to paper. Artisan Okamoto clearly describes the unique materials and techniques involved, and she beautifully illustrates each lesson. The highly readable writing style is personal, poetic, and inspiring....Well recommended.”—Library Journal. “Excellent ...for middle school through adult levels.”—School AA.

Not just eye appealing.......2007-07-12
This book is almost like having a personal instructor. Understandable descriptions of technique throughout.
ART: UNIVERSAL GIFT without national boundaries . . . .......2007-03-25
As small children we would make pools of colors on our watercolor paper and then flood them, oh, so briefly with warm water - tipping back & forth, hoping to make a spectacular effect to impress our siblings. Our parents would 'interpret' these and then we, in superior tones, explained their deeper meanings - amateur psychologists we were.
Only one sister has since created "real" art but Naomi Okamoto's book & several other titles (type in "ink paintings") prompt us to channel our impulses in this direction. Just this week a clutch of yellow tulips budding in a hospital room caught my breath, and reminded me of this book and the yellow blooms on page 18: so few strokes captured mood, pristine shape and mindfulness. The back cover implies that this is easy; that I believe is misleading (doubtless the fault of the publisher).
To train oneself to achieve even a fair-to-mediocre copy will bring growing satisfaction. The author is a good teacher; she encourages in 'underwhelming' increments suitable for beginning and/or slow learners. Okamoto also discusses the use of a "chop" - the signature of many sumi-e - and how to design & create your own.
Ink paintings are often a focus point for meditation - the white spaces equate with blocking out extraneous sounds & thoughts; a flower, bird, mountain, etc., might symbolize your Zen Master? The important technique of 'loading' the paintbrush is fully explained. Reviewer mcHaiku is unaccustomed to painting while holding the brush vertical, and a delicate touch is obviously required to achieve a subtle beauty. For someone who may not be painting, these details heighten the appreciation of all that is involved in producing the 'spare' - intriguing - quietly beautiful works of art. Peruse this book often enough and you may find yourself drawn into the circle of "doers."
P.S.: ART is a Universal GIFT, having no national boundaries.
Good Choice.......2007-01-16
I bought this book to go along with a calligraphy and ink set for my niece for Christmas. It seems to be fairly comprehensive - at least for a starter, which she is.
Loading the brush.......2006-01-25
Some reviewers carped that sumi-e is Chinese-that the Japanese `stole' it. So the publisher fudged the title. Well, whatever!
The book is good for beginners because I am a beginner. Naomi Okamoto keeps one important aspect of ink painting manageable-the loading of the brush with ink. Getting ink on the brush and then putting the brush to the paper is the most difficult function to learn. She keeps sumi-e from being a chore. Buy the book. Matter of fact purchase a number of different books because each artist has his own way of approaching the same subject.
Chinese culture.......2003-04-20
After the surrender in the WWII, Japanese have being working hard to introduce Chinese arts and inventions to the West under Japanese names. For example, Futon, Makura, Kimono, Ochya, Sumie, Suiboku, board game of Go, Tofu, Ramen, just to name a few. This book is no exception.
General McArthur once said that Japan's mind is a vacuum. This is very true. Japanese seem to have lost their self-confidence in terms of humanity, and they have to cheat on the art. Changing the name "Chinese" into "Japanese" only seems to work well for such a purpose of confidence build-up.
Anyway, I still recommend this book to people in the US, as Chinese painting is actually beautiful and eye-candy, unlike the ice-cold Japanese Nihonga. And also they have more chances to understand the most superficial part of the mind of China from Japanese. Japanese culture to Chinese culture is just like cup-noodle to Chinese meal.

Correction for URL given in Prior review.......2003-12-01
The correct URL for the UW Photo tips is:

Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.

It really is essential.......2003-12-01
Jim Church is the true professor of underwater photography. His book is comprehensive and fairly clear. His approach is almost too analytical at times. I would have liked more photos and text explaining what he did and why and how it worked out, although he did offer quite a number of photo examples. His tips on strobe useage and his "secret guide to strobe exposures" alone are worth the price of the book. For a looser and more intuitive approach, read http://scubadiving.com/photo/instruction/.
this is an addition to, not a replacement for Church's book.
Overall, I would give the book an A- with about half of it worthy of an A+ and the remainder a solid B to B+.
eyesguy@aol.com
Room for a lot of improvement, but still essential.......2001-06-12
My first reaction when opening this book was that it was light on text. Not necessarily bad if it says what it needs to succinctly. Unfortunately, this book didn't do that. Procedures could be explained more clearly, and could be illustrated with more and better figures and photographs. This semi-pro photographer often found himself reading a procedure and saying, "huh?" "Change the f-stop which way?" The advanced photographer will gloss over reading the description of f-stops and shutter speeds while the novice will be left befuddled. The book leans toward giving recipes for a situation rather than trying to teach an understanding of photography.
More explanation and pictures could be given of the equipment and configuration. A new underwater photographer with a camera is overwhelmed by the array of arms and attachments, but there is one paragraph on arms and brackets that basically says, "Get the best," without as much as figure to show how one looks or attaches to the camera. Then you get descriptions such as "attach the strobe arm so it tilts toward the camera body." Tilt in what plane? What does a strobe arm look like?
There are statement and procedures that seem odd to an experienced photographer. It is suggested that manual strobe exposure, which is typically only dependent of distance and f-stop, is also a function of subject brightness. The procedure for using TTL flash starts with looking up the flash distance for a full-power manual flash to set the f-stop. If you're going to do that, you might as well not use TTL (although this method does maximize depth of field, but, of course, this is not explained.) The TTL electronics are then used as little more than a proper exposure indication, and if you don't get a proper exposure with your camera set to the edge of the exposure range, you're to burn more film at another f-stop until it works.
This books focuses on the Nikonos V and the now-discontinued RS. Even though the author considers the IVA to be "a dud," the III and IVA are still viable cameras that a beginner, the audience for this book, is likely to have because of the lower procurement cost. (Currently on eBay, a V with 35mm lens runs about $475 while a IVA with the same lens is about $250.) An appendix on the features, and how operating and maintenance differ for these models, would be very useful. Church has written on these models in previous editions, so it shouldn't be difficult.
So, what is good about this book? The color photographs are very good, but are more of result examples than actually showing the equipment, but are inspirational. The guidelines on positioning strobes and estimating distances is invaluable, as are the maintenance sections. If you bought a used Nikonos without a manual, note that Craig Camera sells the manuals for a IVA for $20 while the book currently retails on-line for less than that. If you're trying to decide between the two, I'd get this book. This book also seems to be considered by many to be the definitive guide to Nikonos photography, and my search shows few, if any, other underwater photography books dedicated to this one line of cameras. So, like the title says, even though I feel that there is a LOT of room for improvement, this book may be, indeed, essential for the Nikonos beginner.
A great book.......2000-09-09
A really good how to book for owners of Nikonos camera systems, with practical tips for Nikonos V and Nikonos RS users, although valuable for all. I really like the way that Jim Church has included Situations - UW photo scenarios and he guides you through his approach.
Excellent Info for Beginner to Intermediate U/W Photogs........2000-07-27
Easy to understand, yet comprehensive info for the beginning to intermediate UW photographers utilizing Nikonos V (slightly less info on the Nikonos RS). Organization by subject matter creates a reference that you can take with you for easy and quick, pre-dive brush-ups. Excellent example photos, charts and diagrams. It goes way beyond all Nikon manuals and publications.
