A must have for your library if your're into healthy homes.......2007-08-18
This is the perhaps the best book available for architects and builders wanting to create healthier homes. The book that not only explains what the potential hazards in a home are but provides lots of product information, i.e., where to order alternative building materials, less toxic-paint, safe insulation, etc.
A must have for any architect or builder or home owner thinking of building their own home.
Dan Stih is the author of Healthy Living Spaces: Top 10 Hazards Affecting Your Health
Walking her talk.......2005-01-07
Ones' home is one of the most important factors in ones health, I believe. Todays houses are filled with toxic chemicles that slowly (sometimes quickly) erode the health of the occupants. Paula Baker-Laporte knows from first hand experience how a home affects its occupants - she herself has suffered from chemical poisioning in houses.
As an an architect, she is sharing her years of research and personal experience with the public so that they can also live in a healthy home.
This is a book that everyone in the civilized world should read. It is well written and filled with great information.
Somwhat useful but limited.......2003-05-23
The book's major strength is that it gives specific wording to put into your contract that will try to ensure a healthy house. But some contractors will take one look at these specs and laugh "yeah, right!" Overall, I recommend John Bower's book "The Healthy House" over this one because it covers more topics and gives much more information.
Good one........2001-09-09
When this new edition of "Prescriptions" came out, it was the most complete of any book about Healthy Homes/Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. The combination of architect/doctor/building specialist as authors works very well.
The information is thorough and well documented. They can back up what they say. It is very well organized.
As a Home Builder, I find this to an excellent resource on MCS. On the down side, it is a little bit of a dry read.
A must read for keeping you and your family healthy...........2000-03-06
If you want to stay healthy or have any health challenges, you should read this book. I recommend the book to most all of my patients. It is complete on what are the best products to use in your home to keep from making you ill.If you are building, or remodeling, this book will assist you in making healthier choices. The 3 writers should be congratulated for their extensive resource lists and efforts they put into the life saving information in their book.

This book, which marks the final edition to the six-volume series, unfolds using a unique format, whereby an entire work of manga is created as if it were a cinematic feature being formulated and shot. This volume features topics such as casting the actors (i.e. designing characters), creating the set (i.e. establishing and portraying the setting and setting up the background), dramatizing memorable scenes (i.e. camera work, lighting, detailed dramatization) and other totally new content.

A great book, just not for me........2007-07-06
So, I bought this book based on a review by another aspiring artist. The review said it was "good for beginners". So, naturally I thought being a NOOB, that it meant me too. Unfortunately, it was good, but in the "here it is, draw it" kind of sense. Now, while perspective is better, I found it hard to break down some of the more complex hairstyles, among other things. This book is good for clothing, hair, setting, perspective, and pretty much everything in it. However, being "good for beginners", but not in the A, B, C, D sort of sense. Still a great book, but don't expect miracles if you can't draw a circle...
Striking the right note? Fleshing out characters? Are they the same book?.......2007-01-19
Though it covers a topic that is covered in many how to draw books, I have to say it is a pleasant addition to my reference collection. I bought it because the title was 'striking the right note,' which I assumed would help to translate mood into environment, and other basic storytelling-meets-illustration techniques; however, the book is not appropriately titled. "How to draw manga: Ultimate Manga Lessons Volume six: Fleshing Out Characters" is the actual title, and to be honest, I would not have purchased it if I had known that it would be mostly about developing characters. However, the book has decent artwork, and some pretty good reference and review, so I'm keeping it. I'm giving it a four out of five because this book belongs in anyone's reference collection!
Definitely worth your money.......2007-01-04
Another book that I am proud to own from my fav how to draw artist Hikaru Hayashi. In this volume of how to draw manga ultimate manga lessons, Hikaru shows us how to flesh out our characters. This book teaches you about using hair styles to distinguish the character as well as their personality, their costumes,
designing the settings such as backgrounds, stylized backgrounds, hand-on practice on drawing easy backgrounds, and backgrounds to establish a setting,
The lighting and angles of your scenes to make them more dynamic, and learning from the orginal manga draft.
This book is truly worth looking into, and I think you will be very pleased with this book, as well as all the other volumes to this book (which I own all 6!) A must buy, I totally recommend this book!!
Book Description
Big things really do come in small packages! It is no exaggeration to say that today one cannot discuss Japanese manga techniques without touching on figure stylization methods. This book thoroughly explores this topic, starting with the thought process and techniques used to draw the characters known in Japanese as "chibi." Most English-speaking fans call them "superdeformed," or "SD" for short-those oh-so-cute, smaller-than-life characters who are always stealing scenes in such anime favorites as Chobits, Dragonball, and SD Gundam.

Cute and helpful........2005-11-26
This book goes over the basic stuff like how to do the head, the basics of the body, expressions, the difference between a regular manga charater and a chibi(nother word for Super Deformed charater)ect. Then it goes over the details like making fat people, skinny people, how and when to use chibis in comics,so on. It was a great book besides the fact there were a few naked chibis here and there (thats why I gave it four stars) but still worth buying!
~*~Purin~*~
It was very informative, and nicely done..........2005-08-23
There were many different things that they talked about in this book, all regarding the drawing of 'deformed characters'. I found all that I needed to in this book, although there were some things (like some little 'in the nude' drawings) that made me lose some focus...
SD or Chibi Characters are NOT just Kids' Drawings!.......2005-01-27
Many people think chibi (or SD) characters are a kind of an art (i.e. gag) itself or that it’s so easy to draw, there is no such need for a book on this topic. It is, but chibi characters doesn’t necessary have to be used in gag or parody works; real life mangaka do sometimes use chibi characters in their works to liven up the atmosphere, especially when funny or comical parts are involved. Also, there’re many “secrets” which makes for a highly successful (cute or funny) chibi character. It can therefore be said that chibi characters can be considered an essential part of Manga, unless of course, you plan to do an entirely “serious” manga that doesn’t involve any humor or chibi characters.
This is where this book comes in. Wonderfully organized with many details, hints and tips to drawing a successful and lively chibi character, the book is both engaging and enriching from the beginning to the end. The book first explains the characteristics of chibi characters, before moving on to how to draw chibi characters’ eyes, noses, mouths and even ears. The book also touches on the actions, poses and expressions of chibi characters, and also offers you advices on how to make your character even more Q! (or cute!). Apart from the characters, there’re also tips on deforming other things and props such as background, robots, trees, and even cars! Whew!
Not to forget, there is a special bonus at the back of the book where you can mix and match everything in the face to get your own chibi character’s look and at the same time, hone your skill.
Although it’s mentioned here that the reading level is for ages 9-12, I would like to emphasize again, chibi or super deformed characters doesn’t just mean kids’ drawings or drawings for kids, if you ARE serious about manga drawing, chibi characters is one area you’ll need to work on as well. A highly valuable, constructive and entertaining book; I recommend this book to anyone serious in manga drawing! ^^
about time for book like this to came out.......2004-09-28
Many typical Anime character designs feature heads that are just somewhat larger than would be proprotionally correct. is known as Super-deformed characters, SD for short or Chibi in japanese exagerate this deformation in the goal of appearing cute and funny.Artists often Super Deform characters in order to show an extreme change in the characters' mood. the goal of the animators is always comedic cuteness. Often done at the punchline of a joke for an extra comedic oomph. In this book its cover all the basics you need to know about this japanese style what covers in manga.I give it five stars because there no other book i know cover such a area
Pretty Good .......2004-08-11
well This Manga book is not like the other manga books . This kinda like a special editon . Mostly I would recomend it for more avanced Manga Drawers . If you are just a starter I would recommend Geting started. the first book of manga. It really tells you to draw Chibis (really tiny people) . If you are expeting how to draw bodys, and comics or proffional Manga . You don't want get this book . But If you want to learn all about to draw chibis ,(very small or deformed humans) how thier moves , Faces , Eyes ect. But it pretty Good for people who want to draw chibis . Chibis are a different type of Manga . It is not like the drawings in Pokemon , Salior Moon , and Yu-Gi-Oh . Pokemon , Salior Moon , Yu-Gi- Oh are too serious and drama like manga . What this book contains is a manga what is more childesh like and not very serious or dramatic.
Book Description
The foundation to drawing a character is the penciled under-drawing. An under-drawing that has somehow gone astray, once penned, ultimately results in artwork that just will not pull together or lacks balance. This volume explains in thorough detail how to handle the pencil, before the pen ever touches the drawing. Using actual examples of how a well or poorly penciled under-drawing can affect the final work, this book passes along many helpful pointers. Use this book to learn the absolute basics of penciled artwork, manga-style!

A good introduction to the basics of Manga art style ! .......2007-08-15
I Got my copy of this book thru amazon,And was really disapointed because they kept delaying the shipping date and had to wait over 2 weeks until it actually got shipped. However the book it-self offers quite alot of potential for learning to design and draw your own Manga charecters it covers many topics on both the realistic and the manga style such as the design of the eyes/Nose/Mouth , Also it was very helpful when it came to Head drawing from all angles in addition to that it also covers drawing the human figure . The only reason why i gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because all the charecters in the book look like from some 80's anime . And i am not that much into that style i love Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's style more it's modern and realistic .
This book is awesome!.......2007-03-17
This book has really helped me figure out how to draw manga step-by-step. I got it for my birthday and I'm always using it. It's got some really great stuff in it, so I would recommend it to anyone who has *some* experience.
It's good, but needs more........2007-02-14
This book had good pictures and examples to help a person draw manga and it's characters, but buy a different book if you are a beginner. This book wasn't very helpful to me, but if you are a good artist already and hope to be reminded to how to draw a few things like the head and body of manga characters, then get this book.
But, I don't really recommend this book because it needs much more pages and helpful pointers.
Super Kawaii book!.......2007-01-04
I knew this book should join the rest of my how to draw arsenal when I first laid my eyes on it! This book is sooo helpful in character drawing, it gives you the run down on different kinds of eyes, hair styles, faces, nose, ears, and the body. Another good thing about this book is that it shows you how the hair should be placed on the head, and how it flows when you are doing a certain action. This book also covers the types of pencils and erasers used for under drawings, and examples of the thickness of each pencil. It also has a small section of kawaii chibi characters! Aww! I would definitely recommend this book for those who want to start off drawing manga. Another plus is that the book doesn't contain any nudity at all. Perfect for those who are offended by nudity.
don't have a clue how to draw manga this is the book you should start with.......2006-02-28
Fantastic, I would say this is the first book anyone interested in drawing manga should buy. I have other manga books, but this one is the best.
Customer Reviews:
I...like it?.......2006-12-20
This book has 5 chapters.
Judo
Karate
Kendo
Boxing
and street fighting
The first four chapters are really good. They're researched very well and cover little things that only an expert might know. For example, the differences between a judo uniform and a karate uniform, the fact that if a corner man enters the ring during the round the boxer is disqualified, how to put on a kendo headwrap, things like that.
Also, the book does a very good job of covering both sexes. There's even a note that says "women usually wear a t shirt under their judo uniform, men don't"
The beginning of the book also has some illustrations with some great ideas and techniques
However. The street fighting section is HORRIBLE. And that's the section I needed the most with the way I do my manga. Also, the artist of the street fighting section doesn't bother with facial expression AT ALL. ALL of the characters have the exact same expression on their face in every pose on every page of the last chapter. It's horrid.
But overall, a pretty good idea. Well researched and well drawn, save for the last chapter. I'd recommend the book to anyone who wants to learn how to draw real, accurate martial arts
Pretty good.......2006-07-23
I must say, when you look at the cover you are going to expect the contents of the book to be a little different than what's in it. It's okay though, especially if you plan on drawing a manga that contains kendo, karate, and other forms of fighting. It gives you a run down on the gear you would use. So it's perfect for those who are interested in doing a action manga in that category.
Great reference for more of a realistic approach.......2006-04-26
This is a great reference book. I must say though, the art inside isn't too, well, pretty. Not that its horrible, but, it certainly isn't as anime/manga'esc as the cover might lead you on. So, in that case, I suppose you'll just have to incorporate your own style with the poses and such inside.
This book is NOT for beginners. To those of you, who are beginners, the pictures inside might be too confusing to imitate on a piece of paper.
Other then that, get it, if none of the above are of any concern to you.
Not manga, but real........2005-10-08
Don't let the cute cover-girl fool you; this isn't about manga fighting styles. These are real styles, with real people. There are also pages dedicated to the uniforms and equipment needed to make your drawings come to life. It's a very useful book.
It's decent.......2005-04-23
When I first got this book I wasn't a very good artist, so I thought that it was bad. However, as my skill grew I realized it had alot more to offer then what I had originally though it had. I don't think the book would be very suitable for beginners, but for more intermediate artist I think it is rather helpful. The book features several styles of martial arts, like karate and judo and various outfits and positions that would be found in those sports. It makes an excellent reference for when you need to draw a fighting scene or someone wearing the uniform that would go with that individual martial arts.

Excellent Practical Book.......2001-07-24
This is one of the best practical books I have seen to evaluate an imaging system. It goes through systematically, with worked-through examples, the evaluation of electro-optical systems. Useful for setting up the structure to compare alternatives if you are an electro-optical systems engineer trying to choose among alternatives. For a different (more top-level) approach, also check out Wyatt, "Electro-optical system design." For a more theorectical treatment, see Janesick, "Fundamentals of Charge-Coupled Devices."
LIGHTS...LIGHTS...WOW................1998-04-29
WOW MAN! THIS WAS LIKE THE BEST BOOK I READ ABOUT STUFF LIKE LIGHTS SINCE I WORKED FOR THE DEAD IN THE SUMMER OF 1973 DOING THEIR LIGHT SET UPS FOR THE SHOWS. BY FAR ITS THE BEST BOOK I READ SINCE "CATCHER IN THE RYE" AND I WOULD, AND DO, RECOMEND IT FOR ALOT OF PEOPLE TO READ CAUSE ITS GOOD.

Uncle Duke Is A Riot.......2002-01-31
Doonesbury is a good comic strip though I am not a fan of Trudeau's political views. That aside, I find Uncle Duke to be the funniest character in the strip. This book is broken down by time periods starting in the 70's when Doonesbury first started. Then the book strictly follows the various Uncle Duke storylines (in time order) all the way through the Persian Gulf War. The book also came with an Uncle Duke action figure which stands proudly on a display shelf in my house.
