Book Description

Light on words, heavy on pictures, this totally user-friendly how-to book can turn an absolute beginner of any age, who has never held a paintbrush before, into a productive and proud watercolor painter. Basics open the book, as readers are shown the range of watercolors and how to mix them. Then simple wash techniques and the painting of light and shadows are presented. Next, step-by-step demonstrations show how to paint separate features of a still life or landscape-fruit, vegetables, flowers, trees, and skies-then how to combine these elements into lovely watercolor paintings.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect introduction.......2006-02-28

I wish I'd found this book when I was just starting. I'm an intermediate watercolor student who loves books on technique and buys them frequently. But even as someone who's been painting on and off for a few years, I delighted in finding Mr. Crawshaw's book at the library recently. It's chock-full of simple but useful demos--starting with a carton box, for instance--and progresses to fruits, vegetables, still lifes, animals, landscapes, people and water. The text is minimal and practical. Just last week I painted some fruits from his exercise and they were the best I've painted. An instructor teaching true beginners should at least know about this book, and beginners or even intermediate students looking for some simplified exercises from which to practice should try it. I may even add it to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Cranshaw makes it really simple.......2001-02-05

The author/artist has the gift of taking complex painting subjects (landscapes, animals, people) and expressing their nature in simple strokes of watercolor. The effect is far from simple; it's that stripped-down-to-the-essentials that makes watercolors so appealing yet difficult to learn. One or more strokes of the brush, and you've gone too far and the painting is overworked and wrong. This book will help you over that perenniel problem.

Mr. Cranshaw's book is full of examples on which you can learn, copy and base your own outdoor and studio painting. His sense of fun is never far away. I have other books from this author and I did some really great paintings of cattle immediately and easily after reading and trying his methods. If you want to simplify and improve your watercolor, get some good techniques for plein-air (outdoors) work, I can't recommend this book enough.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed.......2005-10-18

I ordered this book for my niece to learn how to paint with watercolors. I wish that I would have read some of the reviews first... because just like some of the reviewers state, this book leaves out too many steps for a beginner painter. The drawings are poor and incomplete. And the step by step instructions are way too high level to ever help a beginner. For example....step two of a flower states, apply masking fluid to preserve the white in the painting....sounds okay, but when you look at what the sample picture shows, there is masking in areas that will eventually be red or yellow and so a beginner would not know when to use masking and when not. On that same flower when it gets to step 5 which tells you to paint the greens...it says things like....as you're painting the green portions...try to be as realistic as possible. But it never says how to mix the greens, or what colors were actually used in the sample, or that you should also be adding yellows and reds to some of your greens for shading purposes as the picture example clearly uses. There are just too many steps left out to be of use to a beginner.

And then the final insult is the fact that at the front of the book, before any lesson begins there is a giant bright yellow warning about copyright infringement. And it tells the user of the book that they can't use their final drawing for any other purpose but to show family or friends, and that they are never allowed to pass of the final work as their own or they will be going against the law. It even states that they can't sign the final work that they do. Now if beginners like my niece would like to use this book and feel good about finishing their first painting, the very least this book could do is provide learning with an example flower, and then give the reader photos of additional flowers that the beginner could use to actually create their own work of art that they can actually sign.... Now that would be a nice book.

5 out of 5 stars Great color mixing.......2005-03-12

I have really enjoyed the color mixing blends shown in each lesson. It is helpful to see these isolated from the actual painting to more easily see what the colors do together.

I have enjoyed seeing so many different subjects used in the same book. I will encourage all my art friends to buy this one.

4 out of 5 stars 10 Favorite Subjects in Watercolor.......2005-03-01

How lucky we are that Barbara Jeffery Clay has written this helpful and inspiring book. She walks you through so many lessons and gives such wonderful instructions with beautiful results. I like the setup of the book and the detailed explaniation of the color mixing. It is a book for many levels of painters and can be enjoyed by anyone who is interested in painting watercolors.

3 out of 5 stars Lacking clear instructions.......2004-12-02

The artist's paintings in this book are beautiful, but I found the step-by-step intructions to be very unclear with steps missing. Also, the preliminary drawings are very sketchy and most are not detailed enough to be able to follow along with the artist without considerable redrawing. The concept of this book is very good and with more accurate drawings and more concise directions it could be an excellent learning tool, but as it stands I wouldn't recommend it for the novice watercolorist. If you are looking for projects with clear, concise directions and accurate line drawings I recommend "Step-by-Step Guide to Painting Realistic Watercolors" by Dawn McLeod Helm. "Watercolor Right From the Start" or "Color Right From the Start" by Hilary Page are also both excellent books for the beginning watercolor painter.

      Book Description

Dan Burt's paintings vibrate with clean, vivid color. Although they look loose and spontaneous, each painting is actually a well-planned, thoughtfully conceived celebration of the pure beauty of transparent watercolor. In this book, Burt shares his secrets step by step.

In the first three chapters, Burt takes you through the entire painting process, exploring everything from concept to design principles and color schemes. You'll learn how to paint using pigment puddles and a simplified palette. Hands-on exercises show pure, clean colors allowed to mix on paper, as well as the vibrancy of colors not allowed to mix.

Chapter Four brings it all together in 11 step-by-step demonstrations. Lay out your pigments and puddles just as Burt shows you in Chapter Two and follow along. You'll work from light to dark in four stages, painting around saved color and saved whites on dry paper. The demonstrations illustrate focal points, high chroma colors with opposites, values, shapes, directions, texture, composition, readability, lucidity of statement, and other strategies for making your painting "entertaining" to viewers.

This book is ideal for any watercolorist who wants to loosen up, paint more boldly, and release the true magic of the medium.

              Book Description

The New York City water system is, by every measure, an engineering marvel. Delivering 1.2 billion gallons of water each day to more than nine million people, it is a complex network of reservoirs stretched out over a vast upstate region and connected by a web of subterranean aqueducts to rival the aqueducts of the ancient Romans. The system, so pivotal to the development of the nation's largest city and its northern suburbs, was realized over the past century and a half, and indeed is still being built beneath the subways and skyscrapers of New York.

But clean, abundant water has not come without peril and pain. Thousands of people were forced to relinquish their homes in dozens of communities leveled to make way for the reservoirs of the Croton, Catskill, and Delaware Supplies. Hundreds of workers died building the tunnels and dams; countless more were injured. The story of the New York water system is one of genius and daring, sacrifice and tragedy. It is peopled with visionaries, scoundrels and "the little men with the picks and shovels" who tore away mountains and built new ones to capture the sweet essence of wild rivers far from the Big Apple's teeming streets.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars Liquid Assets.......2006-12-23

A wonderful book that pulls together solid research with the passion found from a "local" who understands the region. As an author of another book on the Croton System, I enjoyed Liquid Assets a great deal and encourage anyone with an interest in New York to read it to understand the impact of water on that great city.

              3 out of 5 stars Data.......2002-08-03

Having read this book several times, I agree with the Historical Society that it is an excellent basis for future research. Possibly by someone who is not an employee. The data collected is wonderfully presented but the actual history is very dry and missing the real impact on the residents outside New York City. The one thing which I think is missing is a comparison to the approaches taken to water supplies by the other great cities of the world. This would make it a very informative and living book. It has local appeal indeed but would make very uninteresting reading indeed to anyne outside of New York. However, as an Engineer, I can appreciate the work involved here and did enjoy it in parts.

              5 out of 5 stars Accomplished!.......2001-06-03

After you read Liquid Assets, you'll never again turn on the faucet and take for granted what flows into your glass. This book is a masterful project delving into the history of New York's reservoirs.

New York City, the reservoirs in upstate New York, the lands that were taken to build the reservoirs, and the communities and lands surrounding them now are a hot topic. Ms Galusha's exceptional book takes you beyond the heated arguments to see just what was involved in the planning, engineering, and building of the reservoirs. The undertakings were nothing short of an engineering marvel. This tale of scandal, heartbreak, skill and resilience is expertly told with extensive research, photos, maps and a lot of heart.

5 out of 5 stars "Liquid Assets" the history of a masterpiece........2000-07-04

Diane Galusha's new book, "Liquid Assets: A History of New York's Water System" tells the epic tale of the city's water supply from colonial days to the present. It is a spectacular job of research, yet reflects the passion of a native of the city's watershed. The book explores the political intrigues and scandals surrounding the huge sums expended to build the system; the engineering brilliance that has kept the system world famous for more than one hundred and fifty years; the pain and peril faced by the workers who built it, and the sacrifices made by those whose homes, farms and villages were submerged to create the city's vast network of dams and reservoirs.

"Liquid Assets" is well illustrated with historical photographs, drawings and maps. It is highly recommended, especially for those interested in the history of NYC, engineering, or urban studies, and fans of the historic Croton, Catskill and Deleware Aqueducts. The book also gives a context to the current controversies over filtration and watershed protection for NYC's water system.

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "antiseptic first aid liquids" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

                                Book Description

Daniel Jackson's successful decoding of the ancient Stargate hieroglyphics opened the inter-dimensional doorway to thousands of alien worlds. SG-1 leads the USAF effort to establish alliances with other races and find new technologies to be used against the ever present threat of the Goa'uld. Posing as the mythological gods, these parasitic creatures subjugate the races of the universe under their self-serving banners, destroying those who would stand against them. Jack has been captured by the Goa'uld and his very memories may be used against the SGC in an all out alien invasion. The SG-1 team must find a way to infiltrate a planet of enemies mobilizing for war to rescue their fallen leader.

                                5 out of 5 stars Fun Read.......2006-07-30

Story was decent, hardcover was nice, and all for a great price. There is no reason to give it a 1 for it being a comic. I reccomend this to any SG fan.

                                1 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2006-06-14

I just received my copy of POW. No where in the description does it mention this an illustrated / graphic novel or comic book. I thought I was getting a written novel. Not what I expected.
