Book Description
The meaning of a message, says William Mitchell, depends on the context of its reception. "Shouting 'fire' in a crowded theater produces a dramatically different effect from barking the same word to a squad of soldiers with guns," he observes. In Placing Words, Mitchell looks at the ways in which urban spaces and places provide settings for communication and at how they conduct complex flows of information through the twenty-first century city.
Cities participate in the production of meaning by providing places populated with objects for words to refer to. Inscriptions on these objects (labels, billboards, newspapers, graffiti) provide another layer of meaning. And today, the flow of digital information -- from one device to another in the urban scene -- creates a digital network that also exists in physical space. Placing Words examines this emerging system of spaces, flows, and practices in a series of short essays -- snapshots of the city in the twenty-first century.
Mitchell questions the necessity of flashy downtown office towers in an age of corporate Web sites. He casts the shocked-and-awed Baghdad as a contemporary Guernica. He describes architectural makeovers throughout history, listing Le Corbusier's Fab Five Points of difference between new and old architecture, and he discusses the architecture of Manolo Blahniks. He pens an open letter to the Secretary of Defense recommending architectural features to include in torture chambers. He compares Baudelaire, the Parisian flaneur, to Spiderman, the Manhattan traceur. He describes the iPod-like galleries of the renovated MoMA and he recognizes the camera phone as the latest step in a process of image mobilization that began when artists stopped painting on walls and began making pictures on small pieces of wood, canvas, or paper. The endless flow of information, he makes clear, is not only more pervasive and efficient than ever, it is also generating new cultural complexities.

Constantly Changing infostructure and still no "death of distance" news.......2006-03-27
Placing words continues the author's thesis on no such thing as death of distance. This is a good news for all space loving, teleworking, and distant cousins, in the global village.
Another good thing is, in addition to many stories and histories, this book offers a glimpse of application of data mining technique in the area of architecture and spatial design (62-64).
The weakness of the book (if this book has to be a good reading for the non-architects), is the absence of any explanation on what the title and the sub-title are supposed to be. For instance, symbols, as used in this book, relate to graphic and computer icons, rather than symbols or signs in place, space and visual domains (as in religious, secular, or others).
Further, as seen in the acknowledgements (p. 213), this book also includes auhtor's already published works, and hence it is not much of the current (the worldview as-is) and real-time (synchronous) information visualization.
Highly Recommended.......2005-12-25
(Planeta Journal) - Subtitled "Symbols, Space and the City" this book is the work of a MIT Professor of Architecture and Media Arts and author of the superb e-topia. Among the topics this book addresses is the necessity of flashy downtown office towers in an age of corporate Web sites. Clever, funny and insightful, this book is highly recommended reading.

great book.......2007-08-16
Helen is a great teacher. I have taken art classes and learned 1/10th of what I learned by reading her book. I am colorblind and people argue with me about it because of my ability to use the right colors. I only wish she was still here so she could produce even more information etc.
Helen Van Wyk's Favorite Color Recipes.......2007-04-02
An excellent book that covered many subjects of painting, and how to use particular colours successfully for that area, I found this very helpful and informative.
Helen Van Wyk's Favorite Color Recieps.......2007-03-20
I have not had enough time to give a very detailed review on this book 'however from what I have read I am very impressed with the clarity in her descriptions on mixing colors and their use.
HIGHLY recommended by this professional artist.......2006-10-16
Because I knew that Helen Van Wyk was a "TV painter" I was skeptical, but I discovered that Helen was light years past any of the painters I ever saw on TV. Her talent was outstanding and her teaching is clear, sensible, and utterly practical for painters at any level from absolute beginner on up. I have a degree in fine art; I make a living painting custom murals, and I'm still learning all kinds of useful things from Helen. My work has definitely improved as a result of applying just a fraction--so far--of the information here. It's a shame this wasn't among our textbooks in college; it could've saved me so much time and struggle. Oh, and money. This book will more than pay for itself in savings on paint and supplies.
Why only four stars out of five? Because this book isn't complete on its own. I'm online today to buy "Color Mixing the Van Wyk Way", which I recently borrowed from a friend and now must own. That one goes into more depth with the entire process of building a painting--some stuff I learned in art school, and a lot that unfortunately I did not, because modern painting instruction is sorely lacking in real foundations. Van Wyk can help you fill the gaps if you've been painting a long time, or start you out right if you're new at this.
A Treasure!.......2001-11-03
If you are going to buy one book about color mixing in painting, this is the one for you. She explains the best colors to use and gives helpful hints as to what mistakes not to make. She does so in a straight forward understandable way. I want to buy more of her books!
Book Description
This incredible work features 50 of Helen Van Wyk's most innovative color-mixing recipes, complete with the clear, step-by-step guidance that made her famous. The keys to mixing each color recipe are shown in detailed palettes, tracing each step of the process in full color. Best of all, this book features 13 beautiful compositions created by Van Wyk herself, in which artists see exactly how she applied each color.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful beginner's book.......2001-05-08
As a novice, searching books for the best instructions, I feel as though I have found a gold mine in Helen Ven Wyk's Color Recipes 2.The book is chock full of simple and informative instructions with many beautiful color illustrations. I am enjoying her book as I enjoyed her instructional videos on PBS. Perfect for the beginning artist.
Excellent practical disucssion of the use of color.......1998-08-24
This is one of three books by the late Helen Van Wyk all of which are very good. She has the gift of a teacher who can convey ideas simply and clearly. The book is filled with pages of examples in color which are practical and immediately useful. She gives examples of dozens and dozens of items and how to paint them. This is a great resource book for the artist. Check out her other two books also.

Filmmaker`s Dictionary Needs Adding Before Re-Print.......1997-10-07
One of the most handiest books ever to come out of the movie world. It is for the layman, photographers, the directors, the actors and the scriptwriters. Yet I found several words were not propperly described (like how to avoid Newton Rings, Focus, Why you use Dot, etc.) Other words were omited, like Airiflex, Composition, Contrast, Density, F-system, Key (length of background-film), Outline, Pantomime and many others. I will also suggest that under "Lamps" for instance to name them all, and under "Crew" to give a hieragy, etc. Still a very valuable book by all means.

The Filmmaker's Dictionary is a marvelously comprehensive book that offers concise nuts and bolts definitions of technical and legal terms used in scripts, contracts and every aspect of production and distribution.

Product Description
Arab women filmmakers: Who are they? What drives them? What are their experiences in a male-dominated profession? How do they function within the contexts - and constraints - of patriarchal societies? The answers are complex and sometimes surprising, as complex and surprising as the vastly different films these women direct. In this unprecedented book, Rebecca Hillauer assembles a comprehensive and penetrating look into the history of Arab womens filmmaking, as well as the political and social background of the countries - Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Algeria, among others - from which these artists emerged. In addition to the biographies, filmographies, and discussions of their most important works, lively, in-depth interviews allow us to hear from the filmmakers themselves. Collectively, these women, who hail from a wide range of professional, religious, and social backgrounds, provide a varied and vivid picture of what it means to work in creative and journalistic fields in the modern Arab world. For Hillauer, the subject of a film, its genesis, and the personal story of the artist who created it reveal far more than a particular approach to cinematography. Arab women filmmakers and their main characters (who are often semi-autobiographical) not only afford us a look at seldom-seen facets of Arab societies, they personify an alternative womens model, one that is far removed from western clichés. Broad in scope, and rich in insight, Arab Women Filmmakers is a must read for cineastes as well as students of film, feminism, and the Middle East.

The history of Arab women's filmmaking.......2006-09-24
College-level holdings strong in film history or Middle East history will both find plenty of depth, detail and description in Encyclopedia of Arab Women Filmmakers, a survey of how these women produce films in a male-dominated profession and world. The history of Arab women's filmmaking and the political and social background of Arab nations are mingled in a blend of biographical sketches, critical film reviews, and discussions that include interviews from the filmmakers themselves.

excellent introduction and reference for this important group of filmmakers.......2006-03-08
"Encyclopedia" connotes the comprehensiveness of the material, but not the kinds or variety nor the formatting. The material which exceeds what anyone could be looking for in this subject area and is more informative for the way it is formatted is arranged country by country. Not only are the Arab women filmmakers grouped by country, but there is an introduction to each group which is an overview of the Arab country's film industry noting the particular challenges and advances for its women filmmakers. As for additional material not ordinarily associated with an "encyclopedia," there is an interview with each of the women. And in the section on each is a filmography and also separate "film reviews" of each major film. With this formatting rather than the standard alphabetical arrangement with a reference titled an encyclopedia, the distinctive talent and accomplishments of each filmmaker is presented cogently with accompanying photographs so each one stands out with nearby references to her body of films. Not a conventional type of reference despite its title, this work on this category of filmmaker of rising interest from current international affairs as well as the long-standing special interest in women's accomplishments is really more like a text for use in courses or individual study.

A good reference, but missing some key filmmakers.......2003-11-22
Sergio Leone, James Cameron, David Cronenberg, Tim Burton, and Dario Argento are all noticeably missing from this text. It would be hard to name every influential filmmaker of all time but that is precisely what the title of "encyclopedia" implies.
Consistency is important as well -- how does one name a filmmaker like Tarantino (pre-Kill Bill) and not make reference to Robert Rodriguez or Kevin Smith?! Admittedly, they are still as of yet unproven as "auteurs" but they have revolutionized the field of indie filmmaking perhaps even more than Quentin himself.
Two of my favorites that I hope will finally get some respect, having gone from ultra low-budget filmmaking to the mainstream are Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson. Perhaps the next edition...

Great Reference Book.......2007-05-13
I originally purchased this book when I was editing acrostic puzzles, as a reference book, but I find myself referring to it frequently even now, although no longer edit puzzles. It contains "career profiles of more than 2,000 actors and filmmakers, past and present" arranged alphabetically. It also contains "filmographies" for each actor. I'd recommend this book highly.
Book Description
"The cinema isn't a slice of life, it's a slice of cake"-Alfred Hitchcock. "If you make a popular movie, you start to think where have I failed?"-Woody Allen. "A film is the world in an hour and a half"-Jean-Luc Godard. "I think you have to be slightly psychopathic to make movies"-David Cronenberg. This compendium contains over 3,400 quotations from filmmakers and critics discussing their craft. About 1,850 film people are included-Buñuel, Capra, Chaplin, Disney, Fellini, Fitzgerald, Griffith, Kael, Kurasawa, Pathé, Sarris, Schwarzenegger, Spielberg, Waters and Welles among them. The quotes are arranged under such topics as acting, audience, budget, directing, locations, reviews, screenwriting and special effects. Indexing by filmmaker (or critic), film titles and narrow subjects provides a rich array of points of access for both film fans and scholars.
Customer Reviews:
Add to your reference library.......2001-10-30
Writers, critics, toastmasters and others involved in the film industry will find this book useful for supplying quotes from the industry's best. And the book's organization and index supply all the buttons to gain access to what you're looking for.
But beware, all who are looking for a quickie quote. You'll open a page that's just your subject and come up for air hours later. The book might be great as a reference tool, but it's also wonderfully entertaining.

Excellent Dark Humor.......2004-03-18
This is a must for those who laughed their way through the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The drawings are professional grade and the jokes are darkly funny, sublimely mingling the grotesque and banal rather than relying on shock value alone. The writer manages to make the protagonist, Butch, the epitome of the creepshow boogeyman while still reflecting little glimpses of ourselves. He may not be the stereotypical good guy, but I'm siding with him.
