Book Description
In 1925 the Siberian immigrant Anatol Josepho had an idea for a small curtain-enclosed booth where people could take affordable portraits anonymously and automatically. The photobooth was born. Within 20 years there were more than 30,000 in the United States alone, an explosive growth due largely to World War II, as soldiers and loved ones exchanged photos, hoping to cling to memories or moments in a world turned upside down. But by the 1960s the advent of Polaroid photography spelled the doom of the "four strip" that had become a fixture at arcades and drugstores everywhere.
The recent resurgence of photo sticker machines has recaptured the fun and intimacy of the photobooth. With no photographer to please, people are at liberty to be whoever they like: brave or sexy, cocksure or wise, without fear of censure or ridicule. Free in the certainty of their solitude, families, couples young and old, best friends, and individual after individual have presented to the camera both real and imagined selves for three-quarters of a century.
Photobooth presents over 700 such photographs from the last 75 years, images at turns spontaneous and uninhibited, often goofy, and occasionally touching. It is a fascinating portrait of everyday people and a testament to the ongoing fascination with both the process and the result.

This book is exactly what I expected. If you love pcitures of people you don't know, you'll love this book.
Indispensabile.......2005-08-27
Affascinante retrospettiva, che stabilisce un punto di partenza (o arrivo?) di un particolare capitolo della storia della fotografia che non è mai stato adeguatamente considerato.
FOR ALL ETERNITY ??.......2005-05-12
Babbette Hines' page of reviews will likely be crowded with "CUSTOMER IMAGES". This is a book that invites participation, and reminiscing. It will send readers, laughing, to paw through drawers for their own almost-forgotten 'strips of four' . . . Photo booths did seem to give permission to be silly and inventive, and as pompous or unpretentious as one wished to be. What a wide gamut of emotions - - what an array of poses! My favorites are different each time I look through the book - those hair do's! those hats!
The "Photomaton" invented by an Italian immigrant in 1925 was quickly bought by a NY financier, tho' there must have been some kind of precursor? (One customer image shown above is definitely from the early 1900s.) Those 'models' looked into the lens expectantly & honestly, knowing there would be no retouch job, but maybe wishing that "tinting" was more affordable. What an aura of glamour it gave.
In the 30s having pictures taken was still in the "treat" category, definitely a 'lark' - - on a par with an ice cream soda date! The selection of pictures printed on the back cover of the book do not altogether reflect the collection's breadth. Inside there are many photos of black men & women, and also much less affluent persons. They DO mirror the times. I regret they do not share space on the book's cover.
"PHOTO BOOTH" is a book for sharing - - nostalgia will spill over into laughter. Imaginations may even be dusted off. (****mcHAIKU/5-10-05)
What a delight!.......2005-02-16
Curl up with a warm cup of of cappuccino by the fire and enjoy a glimpse into the private photobooth sanctuaries of another era. What a delightful book!
Makes a wondeful gift!.......2003-07-25
My friend and I recently had the pleasure of viewing the companion photography exhibit to this book at The Griffin Center in Winchester, MA. In addition, we had the good fortune of chatting with Ms. Hines about her work and her love of these vintage images. After meeting her, you really have to applaud her devotion to these "lost" snapshots. Her commitment to the Photobooth really shines through in her book. She has a sincere attachment to the images she has compiled and to the intrigue of the booth itself. The book is one I find myself picking up over and over again and just sort of imagining the subjects. Often the snapshots contained in the book exude a rather haunting feel. I guess the images leave lots of room for imagination. The book makes a wonderful gift for anyone with a creative eye. Pick up a copy or two for that hard to shop for relative, friend, boss, hostess, etc.! "Photobooth" offers up a cool glimpse into history. We need more people like Ms. Hines in this world!

When director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Family Man, Red Dragon) bought Hilhaven Lodge, the former home of Ingrid Bergman, his first purchase was an old-school black-and-white photo booth. Hilhaven Lodge: The Photo Booth Pictures captures--in candid, four-panel glory--the revolving door of A-listers who have passed through chez Ratner and stopped to strike a pose.
Things kick off with a meandering, though entertaining, introduction from the legendary Robert Evans (don't worry, he's in there--page 177). The photos are then alphabetized by first name--from Aaliyah to Zhang Ziyi--allowing for some surprising pairings: Don Cheadle and Don Rickles, Quentin Tarantino and Quincy Jones, and the sign-of-the-apocalypse match-up of Michael Jackson across the page from Mickey Rourke clutching a Chihuahua. When faced with the prospect of posing it seems that most subjects do one of the following: Stick Out Their Tongue (Estella Warren, Jackie Chan), Mug (Britney Spears, Danny DeVito), Vamp (Gina Gershon, Rebecca Gayheart); Kiss (Bridget Fonda and Danny Elfman, Edward Norton and Selma Hayek), or Flip the Bird (Lara Flynn Boyle, Philip Seymour Hoffman). Paris Hilton pops up (as expected) along with Leonardo DiCaprio, Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, and Chelsea Clinton. Christopher Penn looks like he's daring you to take the first swing, and, sporting a shaved head and thick goatee, Colin Farrell perfects the Escaped Con on a Bender look. And even without aid from their stylists or special lighting, there's no denying the natural glamour in some of these candid photos--Matthew McConaughey, Monica Bellucci, and Heidi Klum's snapshots sizzle.
You'll want to clear off a VIP spot on your coffee table for Hilhaven Lodge, one very cool and austere collection. --Brad Thomas Parsons
Book Description
Red-hot Hollywood director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Rush Hour II, Red Dragon, and an upcoming mega blockbuster soon to be announced), lives in Ingrid Bergman's old manse, Hillhaven Lodge. And in this house Ratner has an old-fashion, black-and-white photo booth. And into this photo booth Ratner has enticed a cornucopia of white-hot celebrities, outsized personalities, and rare public legends, all of whom voluntarily vogued, posed, and made silly faces without makeup, wardrobe, or lighting, in four quick shots. The result is a hilarious and revealing look at generally famous people being...silly, and, well, normal. Hillhaven Lodge: The Photo Booth Pictures is comprised of wacky and outrageous picture strips of Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Colin Farrell, Heath Ledger, Heidi Klum, Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Tucker, Kim Cattrall, Jackie Chan, Dino De Laurentiis, Clive Davis, Aaliyah, Edward Norton, Salma Hayek, Quincy Jones, Ralph Fiennes, Rod Stewart, Val Kilmer, Liv Tyler, Harvey Keitel, Jay-Z, John C. Reilly, Russell Simmons, Nicolas Cage, Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, Jack Osbourne, Paris Hilton, Tommy Hilfiger, Tony Shafrazi, Mariah Carey, Matthew McConaughey, Chelsea Clinton, Rebecca Gayheart, Norman Lear, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robert Downey Jr., and many, many more!

Il gioco dell'autoritratto si combina con la lunga vicenda della cabina per fototessere (photobooth): felice connubio, miscelato con un poco di vanità (da star system), che offre un punto di vista che si aggiunge a una storia lunga.

...as in Wharhol. At least his book, like his work, was authentic. This is one of the very little ones that gets tossed back in the pond, or ends up on the close-out table.

You've seen them on TRL, DFX and other MTV programs, but you've never seen them like this, vamping, posing, giggling, and goofing in strip after outrageous four-photo strip. From Jennifer Lopez to Janet Jackson, Ozzy Osbourne to Blink 182, and Mike Myers to Madonna, MTV Photobooth brings you face-to-face with your favorite stars.

This is good fun!.......2003-02-09
Being a fan of photo booths, it is interesting to see people in the public eye, that we at least think we know, acting like everyone else when faced with an opportunity to ham it up on a strip of 4 photo booth pictures. Celebrities who visit MTV's shows are invited into the MTV Photo Booth, and it is interesting to see who can relax and be themselves, or who has to keep up their public face, even when told to cut loose. Looking at the faces of the celebrities here, you can see who seems uncomfortable, who cuts loose, and who stays in character. You will be surprised with who seems the most relaxed, including Celine Dion and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Lenny Kravitz stays cool, while Adam Sandler looks downright uncomfortable. I am out of the demographic of many of the celebrities on display, but I can say I knew who at least 90% of them were. This book is a lot of fun to look at again and again, and analyze, and enjoy.

Book Description
A fascinating history of an American institution that includes an extraordinary collection of photobooth images.
"That a perceptive, dedicated, and sensitive artist like Näkki Goranin has rescued from oblivion so many amazing self-portraits created by amateurs confronting themselves in the fleeting privacy of humble photobooths is yet another miracle for which we can be grateful."from the foreword by David Haberstich
Generally relegated to the realm of kitsch, the history and cultural importance of the photobooth has long been overlooked. Here, Näkki Goranin documents the invention, technological evolution, and commercial history of the photobooth with extensive illustrations culled from twenty-five years of collecting. Complementing this history is a powerful collection of heartbreaking, funny, and absolutely beautiful photobooth images. These often solitary figuresseeking freedom, confession, a thrillare evocative of a lost time and place. Haberstich writes, "For anyone who assumes that photobooth pictures are perfunctory, utilitarian records at best, the range of emotions and moods portrayed by the subjects of [this] collection is a revelation." Over 200 color and black-and-white photographs.

Spheres, cubes, and especially cylinders= success..........2006-09-24
One of my favorite figure books(!)- If you've ever seen the bestselling How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way, a major teaching that stands out is its emphasis on spheres, cubes, and cylinders when learning to draw anything & everything, including the human figure. Well this is *exactly* what Walt Reed's The Figure is essentially all about. The teachings here were developed in & represent the Famous Artists School, and the figure basics here are really excellent yet standard fare. I've even seen some of these principles repeated by recent Japanese animation & comicbook instructionals. Yes, these principles are definitely great; it's the style & way these principles are communicated that makes this book seem a little bit dated. Reed's instruction here is presented with a combination of work by various artists and black & white photos of nude models, giving this entire effort a very mixed-media effect in its overall design. It was created in 1976, and while the photos are generally well done, the models here look very much to be from that time, and maybe even earlier. Also included: drawings, etchings, paintings & sculptures; all by various masters in the history of western art. Add to this the book's physical dimensions- 9" x 12" x 1/2"- and this is really not a simple looking how-to-draw type book. Yet the teaching here really *is* simple & effective! It's basically about building the figure with cylinders, although spheres & cubes are depicted as well. My favorite aspect of the book is Reed's own drawings & instruction, which demostrates the simplified figure accompanied by a wealth of helpful hints, tips & tricks. These instructions are also shown along with the photos of models to help reinforce principles by drawing from life. Hands & faces get special attention. We even get a little on basic light & shade and a section on figures in action! Usually, it's books that present a unified look & style, like the ones by Bridgman and Hogarth, that tend to look a little more timeless in my personal opinion. But Walt Reed's The Figure is fantastic in its actual *effect*, and that's really, basically the most important thing. It's a worthwhile book to add to anyone's collection! P.S. Parts of this book were included in an 8-1/2" x 11" x 3/8" compilation entitled Basic Figure Drawing Techniques, edited by Greg Albert. This compilation is printed on better quality paper, and includes material from 5 current books. In my opinion Reed's contribution is the best. Also- Another great, 5-star work for beginners: Jack Hamm's excellent Drawing the Head and Figure. Highly recommended!
One of the top 5 figure drawing books.......2004-04-27
When I review DRAWING books, the first question I ask is, "Is this for BEGINNERS?" Because I feel an obligation to the book buyer to provide good information, and also to prevent a beginning student from being discouraged, and feeling that they are defective, or ....just cannot get it.
It does not seem to occur to the buyer that many authors just cannot teach. Instinct seems to suggest that that if book gets published, it must contain credible instruction by someone who knows how to teach, and everyone seems to desire to cash in on the Big Bucks market of HOW-TO-DRAW. It may seem surprising that this is just not so. Perhaps as many as half of all drawing books are not very good for beginners. I know. I've gotten familiar with most of the books on the market, and I know what I'm looking for in good instruction.
I've purchased over 25 drawing books from Amazon.com, and own the most popular titles of the HOW-TO-DRAW genre. Walt Reed's "The Figure" rates in my top four choices.
It is not "wordy" and "overly intellectual" nor does it presume to teach ZEN or YOGA, or "Drawing on the Artist in your Brain". This book sticks to the subject and it is darn good.
It is chock full of illustrations, and does not throw you to the wolves; but takes you step-by-step through proportion, basic shapes, and finally, detailed drawing. Of the books using the classical (best) approach to drawing, I rate "The Figure" one of the top five books on figure drawing. The price is "right" too. This book doesn't even cost twenty bucks!
The best figure drawing learning book available.......1999-04-01
I have used this book for about a week and am totally impressed with the results. Before, I did not like to draw hands or faces or lips, now, I find them amazing and a great adventure to draw. I would recommend this book to any one who has never drawn the human figure in a proper way, it's a great way to learning how to. I would like to thank Walt reed for being such a good person as to allow us to know what he knows and sharing all his knowledge. Learning how to draw the human figure is not scary as I thought, I now have discovered a new world of excitement and fun through the use of a simple pencil and paper. Oliver Gonzalez.
Book Description
The author's crystal clear commentary makes the Seder night - the most ancient rite of the Jewish people - not only more lucid and thus better understood, but causes it to come alive as never before. The commentary sagaciously illuminates the text of the Haggadah while the additional notes further explore, and expand on, each subject. This and the powerful illustrations of renowned artist Assaf Berg and the beautifully crafted script especially designed by Ada Yardeni make this Haggadah a true treasure and a joy to behold.

An Israel Haggadah For Passover.......2000-04-24
We have used this Haggadah at our Passover Seder for the past 24 years. Although we have studied several newer publications, we have yet to find another Haggadah that is as poetic, easy to follow, holds children's interest, and is paced as well. In addition, the photographs are lovely!

Book Description
A critical history of the Mexican revolution, in comic form. Eduardo del Rio, aka Rius, is Mexico's foremost graphic narrator and one of the world's most famous cartoonists. Rius invented a new cartoon idiom by pictorially telling a story through monolog or dialog in which real characters and anonymous commentators interact to explain complex social and political issues. Rius's style uses humor as well as simple language and imagery to make these issues easily understood by all--his work fits into a '60s pedagogical tradition called concientizadora (raising consciousness).
