Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wetlands overview.......2007-03-29

Clearly explained wetland designations and issues. Good in preparation for the LARE exams part B.

5 out of 5 stars Where Physical Geography & Env. Planning share common ground.......2004-12-17

This may be one of the best introductions to environmental planning for geography students interested in the application of physical geographic techniques. When inquiring minds ask how a Geography major like myself ended up doing septic plan review as a county Environmental Health Specialist I simply point to Marsh's chapter on waste disposal and describe the necessary physical parameters familiar to physical geographers (soil types and percolation rates, groundwater levels, slopes and topography, surface water, geohazards, mapping, etc). There is something for everybody in this book and you don't have to be a geography major to benefit. A very practical text.

4 out of 5 stars Environmental Planning.......2003-11-26

I am a student in environmental planning and have found this book to be extremely useful. It address a variey of things such as watershed, storm discharge, streamflow, etc. It really gives the reader an idea of how to design with nature.

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......1999-12-26

This book was a great tool for the beginning landscape architect. Many great tools for land planning including equations and tables and charts to determine various things like water runoff, erosion, sun exposure, and much more.

        Book Description

Research policy favours projects that integrate disciplinary knowledge and involve non-academic stakeholders. Consequently, integrative concepts – interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity – are gaining currency in landscape research and planning. Researchers are excited by the prospect of merging disciplinary and non-academic expertise to improve their understanding and performance, but often struggle with the challenges of operationalizing integration.

This book provides guidelines for those coping with these challenges, whether they are members of an integrative research team or individuals working on a problem that demands integration. They must define terminology, choose appropriate methodologies, overcome epistemological barriers and cope with the high expectations of some stakeholders while encouraging others to participate at all.

The book deals with the development of integrative theory and concepts, the development of integrative tools and methods, training and education for integration, and the application of integrative concepts in landscape research. As it also presents examples of successful integrative PhD studies, it is not only valuable for experienced scientists but will also help other PhD students find their way in integrative research.

            Description:
After a short introduction on approaches using either structural or functional indicators, we develop a methodological framework for the analysis and management of landscapes, using landscape ecological principles related to a holistic approach. In a next step, we disaggregate some of the internal processes in landscapes in order to delineate groups of indicators in its spatio-temporal context. In a case study, conducted in an area in Central Italy, the use of some landscape ecological indicators is presented. It is an example of how a set of indicators can be applied to a part of the landscape, which is considered as a whole or integrated unit, according to the principles of landscape ecology. On the basis of four landscape metrics out of eight, calculated in a Geographical Information System (GIS), we present potential areas for greenways in our study area of 16,000ha in a scale of 1:25,000. The results are directed to landscape planning and management and are, therefore, of particular interest not only from a scientific point of view, but also regarding land use planning by local administrators. Due to limitations in achieving more indicators, especially for the interrelation between ecology and socio-economy, the study group expresses the clear need for further refinement of this excellent analytical and management instrument with a special focus on integrated indicators.

              Description:
This paper presents the findings of an investigation into the role and use of landscape visualization software for landscape and environmental planning in Germany. It examines the challenges and requirements of 3D visualization technology and its potential for application in landscape and environmental planning. Relevant literature and comparable surveys are reviewed in order to determine the current state of affairs, and the general and international relevance of the results is assessed. In 2000, a survey of user requirements for 3D landscape simulation software, including the demand for specific features, was conducted within the framework of a feasibility study for a visualization tool. As part of the German-wide survey, comprehensive questionnaires were sent to 1044 respondents from a pool of private landscape planning consultancies, freelance landscape architects, and public planning and environmental authorities. The survey showed that 3D landscape visualization has a positive image in Germany, both among user and non-user groups of visualization tools. Twenty-eight percent of private consultancies and freelance landscape architects, as well as 7% of public authorities, stated that they already used 3D simulation software. Those respondents who did not use 3D simulation software cited insufficient computer equipment, lack of technical expertise of planners and cost-related aspects as reasons for not yet having adopted the technology. ''Ease of learning'' and ''interoperability'' are deemed to be the most important features of 3D simulation software, whereas factors such as ''high interactivity'', ''representability of ecological processes'' and ''photo-realism'' are, surprisingly, regarded as much less important. Users of 3D visualization software are particularly concerned by insufficient representation of plants and habitats in simulations. Looking to the future, the vast majority of respondents (91%) expect increased benefits for landscape planning from 3D visualization software, are convinced of the advantages of the technology, and are eager to integrate 3D landscape visualizations into their working practices.

An excellent introduction to many aspects of bead craft, The Irresistible Bead thoroughly explains how to design your own jewelry and bring the designs to life using wirework, stringing, card beading, weaving, and polymer-clay techniques. Each of the 20 clearly illustrated projects is fully explained in step-by-step instructions. The chapters for each technique conclude with a helpful "designer's notebook" that is filled with colored diagrams offering several more ideas for exploring the methods. The final chapter showcases elaborate work by nine bead artists, and the seven helpful appendices include charts of bead sizes, diagrams of various findings, a glossary, and three different design graphs that can be photocopied and used over and over for your own designs.

Lots of diverse ideas and techniques for beadwork. The exhaustive reference section is the BEST I've seen in any bead art book. A must-have!

4 out of 5 stars Great for someone who already knows the basic techinques........2005-11-03

I bought this book to add to my collection. It wasn't my first purchase but after borrowing it from someone I had to have one. Great photos and great information! This book has given me many ideas for various projects!

4 out of 5 stars Yes, beads are irresistible.......2003-04-05

I must agree with Linda -- beads are definitely irresistible. And, like potato chips, you can't have just one. Unlike most bead books, this one does not start with tools needed or techniques. Linda starts with the elements of design, important to all art. You need to know about line, shape, texture, color, and creating a focal point before learning how to make a piece of art. Linda does not neglect techniques, leading you through wire work, bead stringing, beading on a ground, woven beadwork, and the use of polymer clay. To inspire, she includes a 12-page gallery and designer notes. What makes this book a handy reference is the appendix which includes bead sizes, standard jewelry lengths, findings, gemstones, birthstones, design charts, and a metric conversion chart. So helpful!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Beginning Designers.......2003-01-02

This book starts with a chapter on color, design, and the texture. It ends with a basic list of tools and supplies for making the projects in the book.

There are chapters on wireworking, bead stringing, bead embroidery, woven beadwork, and polymer clay. There are a few projects in each chapter but I really love the Designer's Notes at the end of the chapter. These pages include sketches of other ideas that can be created with the technique just learned.

The gallery is yummy with enough to whet your appetite for more or better yet, making your own masterpiece(s).

But the Appendix is what I really love about this book. There are guides to bead sizes, a standard list of jewelry lengths, and pictures of basic jewelry findings. Plus a glossary of precious and semiprecious stones; a beader's glossary of terms; birthstones - both traditional and astrological; blank graphs for loom/square, peyote, and brick stitches.

                    5 out of 5 stars A few great pieces.......2002-09-27

This is a beautifully done jewelry-making book. The pages are nicely organized and uncluttered with large, colorful photographs and drawings that clearly show details of the jewelry pieces. There are a few items I don't care for, but most are very pretty with wonderful color and texture combinations, in a variety of styles.

This is not a complete beading book however, for example, as one reviewer mentions, there are no instructions for knotted bead jewelry. Rather, the author focuses on a few techniques, with a few projects given for each technique: wirework (brooch, stickpin, a beautiful "cleopatra" necklace, and a wire-wrapped rock bracelet); bead stringing (choker, three pretty necklaces of different designs, beaded watch strap, and an Indian-look fringed bead necklace); sewing beads onto a surface (brooch, pin, necklace); woven beadwork (daisy chain necklace, diamond shaped earrings, bracelet, peyote stitch pouch necklace...all made with seed beads); polymer clay beads (which includes instructions for making the beads, some in the shape of flowers).

My only complaint is that there are only a few projects for each technique. Yet, some of them are so very pretty that I decided the low price of the book justified its purchase.

Note for beginners: There is not a techniques section; instead the techniques are taught within each project's instructions, so a beginner should start at the front, where the most basic techniques are taught, and work her way through the book. Although the instructions are mostly clearly explained and illustrated, a little prior experience with jewelry findings (such as clasps), and doing some wirework may be helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Very good textual guide in need of illustrations and update.......1998-09-15

Just finished reading this very good guide to video makers of most levels. I found the book to be of great help explining the basics as well as more "pro" tricks of the trade. Maybe a bit too much mateial here for a casual amateur video person like myself, filming my son from time to time.

The book is sadly lacking illustrations and that could really have helped in conveying this material in a more informative way. An update in the desktop editing topic would probably not hurt either.

                    1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2004-07-03

This book is simply a collection of old articles from Videomaker Magazine. And most of them are hopelessly out of date. For $12.97 you can buy a subscription to the magazine and have web access to all of the old articles, anyway. You would also then have access to more up to date articles.

Unfortunately, the technology of making videos is changing so fast that a book like this will never be up to date. At least half of the book includes discussions of obsolete equipment, technology, techniques. For example, there is only one chapter that even briefly discusses non-linear editing using computer software, and this doesn't even mention modern applications like Adobe Premiere, Encore, and After Effects or Final Cut for Mac's. There are a few chapters (article reprints)that are general enough to still be of some interest - covering things like script writing, lighting, legal issues, and composition. But, for the most part, you would be better off to get some old film-making books out of your local library or used book store which would provide you with more information on these topics which are not technology dependant.

4 out of 5 stars A complete reference for videographers of all levels.......2002-09-07

I've been a subscriber to Videomaker magazine for years and highly recommend the magazine as well as the book. The book does a great job of putting all of the basics and many intermediate to advanced video techniques all in one concise edition. It even features a comprehensive glossary of terms so that amateurs can speak the language of the pros. If you're just beginning and want to learn about how to properly compose your shots or the best way to light your subject and tweak your sound then this book is for you. Having made many videos over the last 10 years I found the book helped reinforce many of the techniques that seasoned videographers tend to take for granted. For this reason I think that even intermediate to advanced videographers could benefit from reading this book. I'm glad to have it and find myself referring to it on a fairly regular basis.

1 out of 5 stars Lack of Substance.......2002-03-25

This book is 61 short chapters (topics really) that discuss the various aspects of digital video without ever really telling you anything worthwhile. The authors go out of their way not to mention any specific products or have much an opinion that would guide the reader to any concrete conclusions.

I can not recommend this book to a video enthusiast at any level of experience.

                      Book Description

The preeminent work by one of France's most celebrated comic artists, this book tells the unique story of a rabbi, his daughter, and their talking cat - a philosopher brimming with scathing humor and surprising tenderness. Rich with the colors, textures, and flavors of Algeria's Jewish community, it brings a lost world vibrantly to life - a time and place where Jews and Arabs coexisted - and fills it with endearing, thoroughly human characters, and one truly unforgettable cat.
