Customer Reviews:
Nice small reference.......2007-07-18
This is a nice little reference book that is packed with useful info. It's not the definitive Architectural reference but that's not it's intent. It is a bit pricey...but pick up a used copy for $10 bucks and you'll be pleasently surprised.
Stick to the basics.......2007-05-14
After using the older version of this book, I was disappointed by the sequel. Not only was the shipper terrible, the book showed up sliced and with no return instructions, but the content was already outdated. It has been a disappointment.
Dont like book.......2004-05-18
book is very basic. for the home owner (or joke architect) to become familiar with the basic concepts of building. not for a contractor or engineer.
if you need something small.......2004-04-15
As a portable handbook and quick reference it contains some useful information if you need something to carry in your pocket, beyond that I feel if you have a graphics standards or building construction illustrated you are better off. The cost estimation is a bit simplistic but useful, but does not offset the lack of information. Plenty of areas are covered with only the most generalized and basic information. Reason for two stars: should be a 10 dollar notebook.
Guthrie continues to improve the perfect reference book.......2003-04-14
I have had the First Edition of this book since 1993, and have used that as a reference almost daily throughout my education and well into my professional practice. I decided to purchase this revised edition since the original book was becoming worn and flat out-of-date. This new version (a good 200 pages heavier than the first edition) includes new building code information (specifically IBC 2000), and provides revised cost estimate numbers. To this day, it is still the ONLY book worthy enough to reside on my desk.
This book is an excellent source for the student and professional alike. Basic concepts, construction methods, and principles for design considerations are organized and indexed for easy reference and all attempts have been made to make the content easy to understand. Rules-of-thumb and graphics are provided throughout the text as well as commonly used tables, charts, graphs, maps, etc. Guthrie has also managed to develop several clever little checklists, which assist in making sure all issues have been addressed.
The book is getting a little thick, and the distinctive oversized laminated cover has evolved into a standard size cover (it's not spiral bound - it's a paperback). The price is a little high, but I think the information found in this tidy little book is well worth it.

Better wear Your Bifocals.......2001-07-28
Has great information, but print and graphics are extremely difficult to read.
excellent resource!.......2000-09-21
This book is an excellent resource for my entire class of graduate students. It has a wealth of information, and is easy to take along to sites, classes, etc. There are even pages for you to take notes on. It is organized well and easy to follow. You won't find everything you ever needed to know (and didn't need to know), but you will find essential and most-used codes guidelines and dimensions for interior space.

SKETCH BOOK.......2007-01-09
OUR TEENAGE SON LOVES TO DRAW CREATURES, DRAGONS, AND MEN. WE HAVE SEVERAL OF THESE BOOKS AND HE LOVES TO DRAW EVEN MORE! THEY GIVE HIM SO MUCH HELP WHEN IT COMES TO DRAWING EACH WEEK. WE LOVE THE BOOK!!
One of the best!.......2005-01-28
I just bought this book last December 2004, and I must say it's one of the best how-to draw comics. It's not exactly "how to draw" because as the title says it's a crash course on how to make comic books. By this, I mean that the instructions on drawing are not very detailed. But when it comes to story-telling and do's and dont's in creating comics, this book has it all.
The author included so many tips - very helpful ones! From composition to inking. For example, he explains how to make a single panel look great, or how to work with a script, and so on.
This book deals with things that you need, without going into too much detail. And it cuts straight to the point. Thus, it's ideal for young readers as well (young adults).
Instead of buying Christopher Hart titles, you might as well get this one. It's just great, simple great!

The approach taken is very practical, focusing on building on the users competence throughout the book.
A new chapter, Lighting Techniques is to be included devoted to specific examples and illustrations of specific lighting techniques. These include a selection of examples; portraiture, fashion set-ups and mixed lighting techniques appropriate to a location situation. As well as a solid grounding in the principles of lighting techniques these real world examples will provide the reader with all they need to know to manage a shoot in a particular environment.
Reference will also be given to digital capture running in parallel with traditional film imaging.
This is an inspirational text; as well as encouraging visual expression; it is a highly structured learning tool that ensures all the essential skills are learnt and applied to help improve use of light in photography.
*Fully illustrated with lots of new images - now in full colour!
*Includes student assignments to put theoretical knowledge into a creative context
*Sets clear aims and objectives to become proficient when working with light
Customer Reviews:
what type of photographer are you?.......2002-09-02
I think the question is whether you are an advanced amateur or pro photographer already-someone who is looking for advanced diagrams, etc. on studio setups, etc. That is NOT the type of book this is. For someone-such as myself-who is self-taught and trying to learn or solidfy an understanding of lighting, this book is an excellent tool. It does include exercises, but by no means do they take up the bulk of the text. Most of the text is lean, clear writing that helps you understand the characteristics and behavior of light, some different choices you have for lighting, etc. As such, the book very much fills a niche for a certain audience because unlike other books, this one attempts to teach the foundations of photographic lighting. And it does that job well.
Don't waste your money.......2002-07-10
I regret buying this. Its partly my fault for not reading more reviews. Its also partly the problem with buying on line. In a book store had I looked at this book I would have seen that is merely a lesson plan for teachers with out an idea. The book offers almost no information. Instead the premise is that the 'student' should go out and do the exercises. In other words, learn it by yourself.
Perhaps if you are a teacher without an idea you could use this for lesson plans. The authors are an example of university teachers who publish garbage to appear to advance their status on campus. Otherwise this book is useless.
Good for very general and basic information........2001-06-29
This is not a good book if you want in-depth information on the subject of lighting. However, it does give a nice overview of the major areas of photographic lighting. Unfortunately, it leaves the reader wanting more information and further explanations. I felt this book was a good read for a novice photographer, but not someone who knows the basics, but wants a more in-depth view of the broader categories of lighting.
Essential Skills - Photographic Lighting.......2000-06-16
This book is fantastic! It covers all aspects of photographic lighting from film, filters, exposure, compensation, zone system to creative techniques. The terminology is easy to understand and techniques explained in a "no nonsense" format. Excellent for beginners to intermediate photographers.
I have had this book for a few months now and through practicing and completing the revision exercises, I have a better understanding of the techniques used for photograhic lighting situations - location and studio (lighting ratios etc)
I hope they publish many more books like this one.
Thanks Amazon.

Customer Reviews:
Don't Judge by the Cover!.......2007-09-30
The previous reviewers who commented on the lack of substantive information about available light shooting techniques, are correct. I've looked through this book carefully and it is like a dozen other beginning photography books I've seen, and that's how it should be titled. Sadly I believe the assertion that this book was mis-labeled intentionally, because there is so little inside that actually relates to available light shooting. This book, while it has some good information for beginners, is another inch deep, mile wide digital photography overview. When what it should be is mile deep, inch wide, pertaining mostly to working with available light indoors and out. A chapter on reflectors or flash is OK but as an extra, not the "meat".
Unless you're new to digital photography, look elsewhere. Focal Press should know better. They usually produce outstanding titles. This one OTOH, is average in every way except the photographic examples provided. But examples without detailed context, are useless.
A good book mainly because of the last chapter........2007-02-03
Up until this last chapter this is a basically just another how-to digital photography book. Nothing that 10 other books don't already have. However the last chapter covers the "photo-essay" which is almost worth the price of the book. This chapters covers a lot about making a photo-essay that I have not seen in other books.
Not About Available Light Photography.......2007-01-21
The authors of this book should be fined for false advertising. This book is NOT about available light photography. There is not a single chapter on available light photography. This book has a chapter on picking out a digital camera. This book has a chapter on using a FLASH and picking out a FLASH. This book discusses using reflectors and LIGHT MODIFIERS to beautify your pictures. This book is a basic, generic, all encompasing book about digital photography. I have read dozens of books that have nearly the exact same information as this book, which is probably why the authors tried to sell the book under a missleading title. If they tried to sell the book under an accurate title. . . "A beginners guide to digital photography." it would have dozens of other books with the same information and premise to compete with.
As a generic digital photography book, it is not bad, though not at all original. If you are looking for a generic digital photography book, you may whant to buy this book. If you want to buy a book on available light photography, you should not waste your money because there is not a single sentence in this book dedicated to photography using only available light.
An Engaging Book.......2006-12-17
First and foremost, this is an attractive book as every book on photography
should be. It is rich with relevant and interesting color photographs on each page.
It is not just a book about digital photography but one that shows how to use digital
photography to capture and manipulate images. If I were still teaching and teaching
a basic course in photography this certainly would be a book to consider. A well
written, well illustrated and engaging book
Awesome.......2006-10-26
This book is by far one of the best books I've read on photography.
The images and examples within the book are amazing, they really help to get the point across and makes me want to go out and take photo's.
The book is clearly laid out and is in a logical manner. The activities and summaries in each chapter really help. Marks thoughts on workflow came in very handy early on, helped to organise my existing photos and all my new ones which I've been taking while reading this book.
I found this book really easy to read and didn't get bored with it halfway through like many other books. I have been searching for a book like this for a couple of years now and I'm so happy to have finally found such a great book.
The activities in this book aren't mandatory but after finishing the book so quickly I'm now going back over the activities and getting even more out of it. As well as the activities in this book the Photoshop sections are great and were really helpful and will be a great reference.
I'm sure this book will keep on giving for a long time yet.
I highly recommend it.

A TERRIBLY FUNNY BOOK REGARDING SOCIETY AT LARGE........1999-11-18
Sam Henderson's worldview is both incisively waggish and divinely absurd, elevating everyday affairs into poetic gems. His wit, combined with his lively cocktail napkin-style drawings, makes for a terriby funny book. In sum, the Sam Henderson experience is like being trapped in an elevator with Mark Twain, Samuel Beckett, Groucho Marx, and a five-legged frog.
