Book Description

"Widely considered to be one of the most engaging and fascinating artists of our time, Kiki Smith has, over the past 25 years, developed into a major figure in the world of 21st-century art. Her subject matter is as wide-ranging as the materials her work has encompassed. In the 1980s, with her earliest figural sculptures in plaster, glass, and wax, Smith developed an elaborate vocabulary around the forms and functions of the body and its metaphorical as well as physical relationship to society. By the early 1990s, she began to engage with themes of a more religious and mythological nature. Her re-imaginings of biblical women as inhabitants of physical bodies--rather than as abstract bearers of doctrine--led her to make series of sculptural works related to the figure of the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, Lilith, and others. The artist has more recently considered fairy tales and folk narratives as well as nurturing a growing menagerie of work concerned with animals and the natural world. Smith has now earned a considerable reputation as a virtuoso printmaker and draftsperson, and as a re-inventor of the startling sculptural possibilities present in materials ranging from paper and resin to bronze and porcelain. Organized by the Walker Art Center with the full collaboration of the artist, the exhibition Kiki Smith represents the artistps first full-scale monograph.

    Book Description

Well-known as a sculptor, Kiki Smith has also worked extensively as a printmaker--in fact her printed works and other editioned art, including books and multiples, are arguably as important as her sculpture. Smith emerged in the early 1980s as one of a generation of artists who returned to figurative imagery after a period in which American art had leaned to the abstract and conceptual. In Smith's case the interest in the figure was literal: She is fascinated by the anatomy of the human body, which is an immediate and emotionally powerful presence in much of her work. She is equally concerned with the natural world, and animals have become increasingly important in her recent imagery. The heart of printmaking is the ability to create more than one example of an artwork, and this appeals to Smith's interest in the public dissemination of imagery and information. Her work is politically sensitized but she is also fascinated by craft and is constantly exploring and experimenting with her materials. Her prolific body of printed art incorporates techniques extending from elaborate etchings to crude rubber stamps and images ranging from wall-sized lithographs and deluxe artist's books to screen-printed giveaway posters and removable tattoos. Kiki Smith: Prints, Books and Other Things accompanies an exhibition devoted to this underacknowledged but crucial dimension of her art.

    Book Description

Through her explorations of the human body and the natural world, Kiki Smith has confronted in her art the most urgent social and spiritual issues of our day. Direct and accessible, Smith's expressive art engages social and cultural issues in a sometimes viscerally disturbing way. In her most recent work, Smith has extended those themes, incorporating rites of passage and cycles of life, death, and rebirth through an iconography of animal, human, and fairy tale imagery.

Helaine Posner's monograph is a comprehensive survey of Smith's work in installation, sculpture, and graphic media. She discusses its origins and proposes an interpretive framework, locating it within the artistic traditions that have nourished Smith and tracing its development from the 1980s to the present. An interview with Smith adds the artist's own perspective on the work.

    5 out of 5 stars A Vulnerable Beauty.......2006-09-23

KiKi Smith is arguably our most gifted living artist. She is best known as a sculptor, but it is the complexity of her printed art that I find most fascinating. Experience "Rapture" 2002, page 227, this etching displays a fragile beauty rarely seen in contemporary art.
Her powerful prints, drawings, paintings and sculptures are superbly reproduced in this book.

        Book Description

In 2005, the great New York cultural arts organization Creative Time brought together 39 artists, educators and thinkers over a series of intimate dinner parties. Critical conversations were initiated, ideas were discussed and challenged, and all of it was recorded for posterity in Who Cares. The topics included how art functions as public practice, the globalization of creative economies, the dominance of restrictive notions of beauty, and the war culture in which we live today. The countercultural motivation of the project was best explained in the words of Doug Ashford: "I have always wanted to see how the ideas of artists can affect everyday life in this city and how they can ignite dialogue and participation." Participants include Ashford, Julie Ault, Hans Haacke, Emily Jacir, Lucy Lippard, Daniel Martinez, Marlene McCarty, Helen Molesworth, Anne Pasternak, Paul Pfeiffer, Michael Rakowitz, Martha Rosler, Ralph Rugoff, Amy Sillman, Allison Smith, Kiki Smith and David Levi Strauss.

          Product Description

CONCORDANCE is a new collaborative work by two acclaimed contemporary artists, poet Mei-mei Berssenbrugge and sculptor Kiki Smith. Inspired by Smith's image of a dandelion, whose floating silks Berssenbrugge compares to reading, the poet asks, "What if images were Eros as words?" In her deceptively childlike book, with its aura of fairy tale, large type and over-scale imagery, Berssenbrugge's poem traces embeddings of human and animal bodies, ideas, dreams and emotion in a concordance of parallel and contingent contexts. Smith's pochoirs of Eros as seeds, feathers, star-like explosions, and wide-eyed, unblinking owls embed the emotion Berssenbrugge's poetry ignites through brilliant insights that surface as layers of a "streaming consciousness . . . emanating from stars symbiotic with individuation. A second poem, RED QUIET, designed by Smith as brown typography on red Eames paper, explores the related theme of the force fields of attraction and repetition that can be created by words, emotion, images "He calls the location of accidents a morphic field: their recurrence is resonance, as of an archetype with the vibration of a seed." A Special Editions of Concordance, signed by Berssenbrugge and Smith and containing a limited edition print of an actual page of the book, is available from KSP for $350.

            Book Description

Kiki Smith: Telling Tales accompanies a major exhibition at the International Center of Photography. Smith, best known for her sculptures of the human body, presents her recent photographic and multimedia work on the theme of fairy tales. The centerpiece of this book is the full-color visual essay of her renditions and investigations of the characters of Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, the biblical Eve juxtaposed with Snow White, and various enigmatic female puppets. Through these symbolic female figures, the artist explores themes of temptation and sexuality, attraction and danger, and the impact of knowledge. Myths, fairy tales, and childhood fantasies predominate.

            Book Description

In This Is Not It, Lynne Tillman's collection of 20 years' worth of important and compelling short stories and novellas, the protagonists seduce you into their lives and thoughts. Engaging, funny, elegant, and ironic, Tillman takes the reader to new heights of wit and meaning through staccato phrases, grammatical twists, and sensuous language. Familiar worlds of honesty, deceit, dark humor, pleasure, pain, confusion, dependence, love, and lust each play decisive roles in her believable fictions. In "Come and Go," three characters and an author collide. In "Pleasure Isn't A Pretty Picture," the reader is treated to a he/she meditation on the one-night stand. And "Dead Sleep" is truly an insomniac's worst nightmare. A twin act on a double bill, This Is Not It is a collection of innovative and stand-alone writing that also engages and matches wits with the some of the best contemporary art: work by Kiki Smith, Jane Dickson, Jessica Stockholder, Diller & Scofidio, Laura Letinsky, Peter Dreher, Roni Horn, Stephen Ellis, Juan Munoz, Vik Muniz, Silvia Kolbowski, Jeff Koons, James Welling, Aura Rosenberg, Barbara Ess, Barbara Kruger, Dolores Marat, Haim Steinbach, Gary Schneider, Marco Breuer, Stephen Prina, and Linder Sterling. Since 1982, acclaimed novelist Tillman has created these unique narratives that are a parallel universe to the contemporary art world. Maybe they're analogues or dialogues, maybe fictions inspired by art, maybe reflections, or meditations--but whatever they're called, like Borges's fictions, they are their own worlds, too. Tillman has marked out terrain of her own, which this collection celebrates. Full of life and art, This Is Not It is illuminating, bold, subtle, and riotous.

...through a unique vision of the world we're struggling to be in - through the alternation of worlds. A glimpse into the nature of things, situation, and people. Precise sentiments. Bold language. Innovative forms. Rewarding for young writers and readers who enjoy variety in literature. Leave this book alone though if you're used to more traditional stuff - not that everyone would like Lynne Tillman.

              Book Description

Vincent Katz and Vivien Bittencourt's book, produced in concert with their video of the same title, traces Kiki Smith's preparations for her eight-room installation at the Fondazione Querini Stampalia in Venice, which coincided with the 2005 Venice Biennale. It places readers in the midst of the puzzling but effective modus operandi of a highly sophisticated visual artist: Smith works at home, surrounded by books, a pet bird and tiny kitchenette, and moves easily between drawing, collaging, photographing, printing, painting plaster casts and creating furniture fashioned from liquor boxes. Following her to Venice, Katz and Bittencourt observe the complex installation of this work, which proves to be an integral part of its conceptual whole. The book features fascinating and revealing transcripts of the artist's spoken words--spontaneous reflections on her life as an artist among a family of artists.

This reference book for art students, teachers, and professionals presents examples of finished paintings, as well as color charts that demonstrate color mixing as it applies to watercolors, acrylics, and oils. Students learn how to choose and mix colors to produce the maximum color range from the minimum number of paints. The book starts with a comprehensive, illustrated explanation of color theory, demonstrated with reference to the color wheel of primary and secondary colors. In separate sections that follow, the authors—each an expert in different paint media—show how to approach watercolors, acrylics, and oils. In addition to color charts, the book presents reproductions of gallery paintings in all three media to show how various hues are created and used. Still life illustrations, each with a detailed analysis of its color make-up, enable students to put theory into practice. Hundreds of color illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Will Make You Smile.......2006-04-06

Some of us developed our love of photography from looking at the pictures in LIFE magazine. We probably didn't realize it at the time but the great Philippe Halsman influenced us more than any other photographer as he had more LIFE covers than any other artist. Many of his photographs are part of the American unconscious-- the beautifully cropped portrait of John Kennedy, Marily Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor et al. Mr. Halsman, while on photo assignments, came up with the most clever idea of asking his subjects to jump for him. This beautiful book containing photographs of 191 jumps is the result.

This obviously persuasive photographer got statesmen, politicians, artists, actors, writers, scientists, theologians, comedians-- apparently just about everyone he asked-- to jump although some invitees said "no." They included Van Cliburn, Ed Murrow, Dag Hammarskjold, Herbert Hoover and most certainly Eleanor Roosevelt. (Tallulah Bankhead kept one foot on the ground.) I hadn't seen this book in several years. The two photographs I remembered with those of Salvador Dali and Marilyn Monroe. Other favorite shots are of Kitty Carlisle and Moss Hart, Shirley Temple, Joanne Woodward, Marcia Davenport, Adlai Stevenson, Grace Kelly and Judge Learned Hand as they jump.

Mr. Halsman wrote a very thought-provoking introduction to this collection in which he gives his theories about "jumpology." He certainly writes with a great deal of insight as well as humor. Dame Edith Sitwell "could. . . barely walk. . . I did not ask her to jump because it was obvious that the only thing Dame Edith could do well was to sit well." Some of his statements ring true. I'm not ready to jump on some of the others. Mr. Halsman opines that usually we, to quote T. S. Eliot, put on a face to meet the faces," and hide our feelings under our facial masks. When we jump, however, our faces show our true selves. That makes perfectly good sense. Case in point: Richard Nixon still looks like a caricature of himself when he is jumping. The artists also has theories about why men jump with their arms pointed toward the ceiling-- one arm versus both arms-- the significance of crossing the arms, keeping the arms to one's side, the differences in what the same motions mean when applied to men and women, the significance of removing one's shoes, the position of the legs, etc. In short, a fascinating essay. (Of all the men who jumped for Mr. Halsman, the only male to remove his shoes, showing dapper, designer socks as we would expect, while keeping his double-breasted suit buttoned, was the Duke of Windsor. I wonder what all that means.)

If you like photography or amateur psychology or just want to smile after a hard day at work, you should relax with this book.

              5 out of 5 stars A Classic........2002-08-26

What else can I say? It's lightweight material (but you knew that), but this book documents a bygone era in a unique and unforgettable way. There are many images in the book that alone are worth the purchase price. In particular I like the photo of all of the Eisenhower brothers caught in the midst of cracking up over a good joke.

This is the perfect coffee table book (If you still have a coffee table). It has great pictures of famous people jumping.

I ran accross this book back in the late 80's can I gave it to a friend. She loved it and I have been looking for a copy ever since for myself. I finally found it at Amazon.

The picture of Nixon jumping is priceless. He looks happy! This is my second favorite picture Nixon (Nixon and Elvis is #1). These are unique pictures taken by a master photographer -- Priceless.

5 out of 5 stars "Jump" On This Book!.......2000-04-26

Philippe Halsman's Jump Book is not just for people who love photography. Oh no - no matter who you are, what your age, sex or nationality is, you will love this book. It has everything, from actors to politicians to artists and even royalty - up in the air!

Each person has his own way of jumping. One hides her legs in her skirt, the other bends them and yet a third person will kick them as high as possible. I think each person's jump tells us a little bit about who he or she is, really. Each jump also has its own setting -some are indoors and some are outdoors, each person picking the place they want to be photographed at.

The book is divided into sections, which makes it easy to compare people's jumps with their peers'.

This is for the open-minded, as it is not your regular "straight" photography. If you're interested in more convetional pictures, I recommend Halsman's Portrait book, which is also beautiful.

The thousands of devoted readers who follow the weekly chronicles of Bechdel's cartoon heroines--Lois, Sparrow, Ginger, Jezanna, and Mo, among others--probably already know that the strips read best in book form, where Bechdel's sly observations of lesbian life in the 1990s can blend with her ongoing narrative into something like a sketchy but provocative novel. Split-Level Dykes, the eighth collection in the series, is no exception. Its two dominant story lines--politically correct Mo commits herself to the brainy and self-absorbed Sydney, while Clarice and Toni, lesbian moms of color, nearly break up over their move to the great white suburbs--keep the reader enthralled and anxious, easy prey to the comic relief of Sparrow's heterosexual panic and the dating foibles of the swashbuckling Lois. With an anthropologist's eye for social detail, Bechdel fleshes out her two-dimensional world into something you could consider either the best kind of beach reading or the stuff of doctoral dissertations. --Regina Marler

5 out of 5 stars The Human Comedy, 90's Fashion.......2000-02-16

I've been reading Alison Bechdel's "Dykes" books since i discovered her stuff in the "Funny Times" when there were only three books out.

She just keeps on getting better and better.

Speaking as a heterosexual male, i can say with some authority that Ms. Bechdel consistently touches on matters and issues that transcend her setting and move into the range of Consideration Of The Human Condition.

While the strips contained in this volume (as always) appeared on a weekly basis in various "alternative" publications, the best way to read them (again, as always) is in the form of this collection, in which one can follow the sweep and development of the story and the lives of her characters without having to wait a week for the answer to that question that is the bane of the wellpaced storyteller, the eternal "And then what happened?", and, as always, Ms Bechdel's book readers get some much=appreciated lagniappe, in the form of a book-only continuation of the story, showing us the barely-orchestrated chaos of trying to co-ordinate several near-traumatic moves and only one truck.

Buying this book, like buying any in the series (except the first, which is really for completists only), is your ticket to an evening of watching a cast of wonderfully-eccentric old friends going through all the things you or i go through -- only funnier.

5 out of 5 stars Buy the entire series.......1999-10-19

Alison Bechdel's take on life, love and sexuality is not only thought provoking but hysterically funny as well. It's hard not to regard the characters as old friends. Whether you're a lesbian or not, you'll love the book.

                      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......1999-06-24

I moved two years ago, and I *really* empathize with what virtually every character in the strip endures in this one. And I will never, never hear the line "I'll take it. Do you gift wrap?" in the same way again.

If you're a fan of the series, buy it. If you aren't, buy it anyway. Hilarious!!!
