Inspirational Terracing.......2006-08-17
I WOULD LOVE TO REVIEW THIS BOOK IF YOU EVER SEND IT TO ME!! YOU SOLICITED ME FOR THIS BOOK AND THEN COULD NOT PROVIDE IT....I AM STILL WAITING!!!AS OF TODAY IT HAS BEEN 1 MONTH SINCE I ORDERED THIS BOOK!
This is "just an OK" book.......2006-04-25
This book is small and "just ok" for do-it-yourselfers. The book has lots of photos that pretty much all look the same. Two pages contain a list of tools needed and a photo of the three types of landscape blocks used, then you are on your own. Basically with some landscape blocks, some concrete adhesive, and a level, you can do it without this book. I gleaned the book in about a half-hour. Once you have read those two pages on what to use, you won't be needing this book.
This book shows how to turn an ugly slope into a beautiful garden!.......2006-03-25
I was also blessed to meet the author of this book at a home improvement show and see photographs of his work. I also purchased his book, which included more photographs of his work and landscaping/terracing ideas. I reviewed the pictures over and over again, imagining how my backyard would look. Then, I was again blessed to have Paul and Ryan come to my home and transform my ugly slope into a beautiful garden and sanctuary. Every day since it has been built, I can't wait to get up in the morning, look out the window, and see our masterpiece. Now, I love spending time in my backyard. I would highly recommend not only Paul's book, but his services as a landscaper.
A singular vision.......2006-02-22
Mr. Nordmark likes the precast concrete block you can get at your local home store. He also likes the kind of design you see on the cover and sticks to his theme throughout. If you think you might like to see a variety of materials and layouts, you should get another book. I see lots of good reviews here, but found the designs to all look very similar, and the materials to be, well, concrete block. Also, the photos, while plentiful, are washed out, sometimes blurry, and more dated-looking than the 2001 publishing date would suggest.
artist cove.......2005-10-12
I was blessed to find this artist at a home improvement show where he had hundreds of photos of his work. I bought this book and read his ideas and feelings about landscaping and was touched by the love he has for nature and his creativity while sculpting and molding his work which he shares in his book. I was again blessed to hire Paul and his crew to come to my home and create a sanctuary in my back yard. I love to come home after a long day and spend peaceful recooperation time there. I would highly recommend not only his book, but his services as a creative landscaper. The peace and tranquility he will create for you will be a source of love and inspiration forever. My thanks to you Paul. Sincerely, Artist Cove

magnificant flowers.......2007-02-07
This gorgeous watercolor book is filled with equistive colored flowers. It has instructions as to the layering technique on how to achieve these glorious paintings. It is not your ususal run of the mill watercolor book. This is sophisticated stuff. Much of her painting involves using glass as part the picture, crystal and otherwise. You just cannot believe the results. Glorious flowers and complex backgrounds. I would not recommend this book for the beginner watercolorist. I would say you have to have some experiance in washes, values and color theory. But, for the more advanced, it is a wonderful resource.
Learn from the best!.......2006-10-30
Soon Y Warren is one of the best watercolorists of our times. I was privileged to take a workshop from this humble woman who manages to produce some of the most richly colored, impacting paintings of our day. While many books just give you enough actual information to be discouraged, Soon's book is generous with her techniques. If you are not even an artist, buy it to have many photos of her stunning watercolors with their intricate crystal, vivid florals, and lush fabrics. I learned that a garage sale dinner plate works as well as a porcelain palette, that her "magic" red is "RED" well applied, that inexpensive Silver Black Velvet brushes will match a kolinsky in the right hands, and that 5 colors will paint just about anything.
Customer Reviews:
A book for beginners!.......2006-04-14
I agree with the reviews here that this book is for beginners. Why? When I opened this book and saw the paintings inside, I felt as though I were looking at paintings done by someone who had just begun to paint and was taking a brush and just splashing color all over the canvas. Any beginner would be thrilled to learn from this book, because to duplicate what this artist has done would seem quite simple to do. I realize that this is just my opinion of an artist's work. Apparently he is well received and has won many awards. But, I could not even get passed the paintings to get to the text to see if it was actually of any value, because I felt the paintings were so horrid. I don't write many reviews, but this was something for which I felt strongly. I'm so glad I only paid $4 for a used copy.
Paul Riley Flower Painting.......2002-07-06
Excellent innovative approach to painting flowers in watercolor. Paul Riley departs from the standard format of predictable how to books and speaks of research and investigation, planning and preparation, exactly as he might as a teacher. (He runs successful painting workshops from his studio in Devon.) Flowers are synonymous with color and Riley is a consummate colorist. He uses unusual tools, calligraphy brushes and bamboo pens to achieve his effects. Beautiful color, articulately written.
Flower Painting by Paul Riley.......2001-07-06
I have just taken up watercoloring as a hobby and having had no classes in watercoloring but having a love of painting flowers, I found this book to be extremely helpful and informative. I copied several of Mr. Riley's pictures and they turned out very well. His information on watercolors and brushes to get started with are extremely helpful and I will be following his advice! I read the book from cover to cover and am looking forward to reading his book on landscapes. His book is easy for even a beginner like myself to understand and use.

Vanderzee: When Photography Becomes More Than Documentation.......2001-05-03
When watching Ken Burn's "Jazz" on television, look for Vanderzee's contribution; when viewing Ken Burns' "Baseball" on video, look for Vanderzee's contribution; when you see images of African-Americans sitting in parlors, going to church in their Sunday finest, or heading off to war, their hearts full of patriotism even in the midst of racial separatism, look for Vanderzee's contribution - he was there. Our history is so much more than what we have seen on television and read in the newspapers; we are so much more than the victimized remains of a harsh and unjustice past; we have survived and found dignity in the most bizarre places, and Vanderzee and other photographers like him went to these places and perserved a dignity that is only now being revealed. Thank you Ms. Willis.
an exceptional representation of VanDerZee work ..........1999-10-01
This book is exceptional treatment of VanDerZee's photography and the role he played in the development of twentieth century photography. His use of the discipline to represent African American role in 20th century American history and photography. Most cities had at least one serious African American photographer who helped document black life in that city. His use of photography as survival tool and the expression of life in Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance.
VanDerZee's work survived the most incredible changes in the field of photography i.e. from flash powder to the electronic flash. In VanDerZee's work you can find portraits of great historical African Americans such as Marcus Garvey, W.E.B. Dubois, Romare Bearden, Muhammed Ali, Bill Cosby and many hard working African Americans.VanDerZee photographed for eighty plus years. This book should be read and study by all beginning photographers so that the must understand what one must do to survive in the discipline.
Book Description
From 1916 until 1969, James VanDerZee operated a portrait studio at various addresses in Harlem. In his heyday, from the 20s to the 40s, he took pictures of prominent Harlem figures like Marcus Garvey, the preacher Daddy Grace, and Adam Clayton Powell, Sr. But in the latter part of his career, he spent more of his time on a mail-order business re-touching and restoring other people's old photographs. The same year that he closed his last location, however, his work was featured in the exhibition Harlem on My Mind at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Although the exhibition was controversial, the attention that it attracted to VanDerZee's work finally brought the photographer, at age 83, the acclaim he deserved. This intimate catalogue recalls the environment in which VanDerZee worked and lived. While he did make portraits of local celebrities, including the stars of the many legitimate theaters open in Harlem before the war, his real bread-and-butter were clients from the community's thriving middle class. Despite laboring under related commercial constraints, VanDerZee pursued his work with imagination and verve, photographing his clients before elaborate backdrops or sets, making complex group portraits of Elks' lodge members, jazz bands, and ladies' clubs in their own settings.

A portrait showcase of the work of James VanDerzee.......2004-11-12
The James VanDerZee Studio is a portrait showcase of the work of photographer James VanDerZee, who operated a portrait studio at various locations in Harlem from 1916 to 1969. He is best known for his portraits of leaders and popular figures such as Marcus Garvey, Adam Clayton Powell, Sr., and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, but the bulk of his living came from his portraits of the local community's middle class. Black-and-white photographs, some of them gel-tinted, show his finest work in capturing human energy and spirit, and the thoughtful text rounds out this brief yet entrancing survey of a passionated and dedicated professional's life work.

Way to go, Katrina!.......2003-08-07
In about 3rd chapter, this tale gets moving, very good dialogue exchanges help to create lovable characters. From the cover info:
STRANGERS IN PARADISE. Max Laurello had come to the Idyllic Caribbean island to escape the demands of women in his life and get on with his writing! Conversely, Katrina had come to forget men---in particular the memory of her disastrous marriage to the philandering Bastion. The last thing Max needed was another woman...the last thing Katrina needed was a womanizer like Max. They each wanted solitude...but "chemistry" drew them together. And when they met on the tropical beach---the sparks inevitably flew. The question was, could they prevent the power of paradise from casting its steamy magic.

Ministry of wholeness.......2005-06-17
John Vanderzee is has been chaplain at the hospital in my community (Bloomington, Indiana) for the past fifteen years. Currently I am working with him as I take an internship in chaplaincy, and I came across his book among the books in the office at the hospital. It fits very well with the populations I work with both in the internship as well as my regular chaplaincy in a retirement centre in Bloomington. Vanderzee speaks of the distinct nature of chaplaincy vs. parish ministry, but that there are some people (both staff and regularly returning patients) in the chaplaincy setting who become familiar; I have discovered this is true in my own setting.
Situations of chronic illness and long-term disability are becoming more widespread as population ages, but health care is still primarily focused upon shorter-term kinds of health concerns. Hence, chronic illness is less understood. However, there are ways in which it can be contemplated. Vanderzee works from a Protestant/Reformed basis (as he is a Presbyterian minister), but writes broadly enough to fit chaplains of other denominational and faith traditions.
Vanderzee looks at the shift of illness and health issues during the course of the past century, where infectious illness is less of a menace, but chronic conditions (cancer, heart disease, etc.) have become more prevalent. Vanderzee gives a brief analysis of different definitions and characteristics of chronic illness conditions, and looks at the kinds of spiritual implications that might arise. He lists different kinds of literature available (inspirational, power-of-positive-thinking, personal accounts, etc.) but states that 'the lack of attention given to chronic illness in pastoral literature reflects a general cultural obliviousness to the growing magnitude of chronic illness as a health care problem.'
Vanderzee uses case studies as well as academic studies to carry forth his critique of the modern medical model of care and his development of a more effective model for ministry to those who have long-lasting conditions. Most healthy people see illness as 'an unwelcome interlude' and are not prepared physical, emotionally or spiritually for the implications or reality of living with pain or disability. Vanderzee looks at biblical and church-traditional ways of seeing suffering, and looks for pastoral responses to critical questions that may be brought up, both by the suffering as well as those around the sufferers (which can include the pastoral visitors themselves).
Vanderzee sets up a paradigm of negotiation as a way of dealing with the situation that has both theoretical and practical advantages. Admittedly challenging, Vanderzee explores the ways in which this might work to provide holistic support in context of a faith community. Negotiation involves the interpersonal relationships, the environmental context, and the theological understanding, not only of the one suffering, but also of those around the person. Illustrating his points through people such as Meg, Cathy and Gene, Vanderzee shows how their decisions, actions and feelings can be understood in typical as well as new interpretations. For example, Vanderzee writes that 'Meg's theological negotiation resembles the Kubler-Rossian activity of bargaining', but goes on to show key differences in the way it takes place, as well as its result.
In terms of congregational settings, perhaps the statement that most stood out for me was this - 'What chronically ill and disabled persons are asking of their faith communities is that we get close enough to them to be willing to risk the discomfort that proximity generates.' This is much more than doing occasional (even regular) hospital visits. It means to look for ways in which the chronic sufferers can be fully part of the community, and their voices can be heard in and through their experiences. There is interpersonal, environmental and theological negotiation to be done at this level, too.
For those in pastoral roles, finding one's style is important. 'Negotiation as a pastoral style confirms that while curative healing may not be forthcoming, wholeness can still be experienced through flexibility, creativity and service to others.' The concepts introduced here are well worth considering for those ministers, lay or clerical, who seek to provide a more full ministry of integrity to those whose suffering is real and unlikely to be completely cured by medical sciences.
Vanderzee concludes with an outline of a Lenten study on the topic, as well as model liturgies for healing services which can be used and adapted by others. There is a good bibliography that, while a bit dated now, gives some good guidelines for further study.

Book Description
Poetry is many things to many people, evoking images, emotions, or memories in the mind and soul of the reader. Talented poet Rick VanderZee does this and more in his collection, Trust Is Fiction: The Spirits Inside Me.
Through his dynamic words in poems such as "Appreciation Can Be Blind," Mr. VanderZee admonishes us to stop taking the world and others for granted and to take time to live life rather than just existing. Doing so again in "Your Clothes Are Off," he also reveals an artful sense of the absurd.
However, in "I Don't Care" and "Hesitant," we can feel the depths of his despair at an unrequited love, yet in "Crystal" and "When I Think of Heaven," we are aware of his joy and delight in nature and the love of God.
With his spellbinding verse, poet VanderZee creates a multifaceted canvas of the pain of life and relationships interspersed with bright images of spirituality, God, and hope for a better tomorrow.

Book Description
The worlds of hip-hop and suburbia couldn't seem further apart . . . and that's just what makes Housebroken so doggone funny. Cartoonist Steve Watkins plunks down DJ Dog, his plucky ex-rap star canine, into the middle-class Watson family, and a whole lot of grumbling, growling, and cultural "enlightenment" takes place. Gangsta Yoga with DJ Dog is the second regular collection of Watkins's nationally syndicated strip, and this book promises the same successful combination of hilarious laughs and crossover sales as its predecessor.
DJ Dog may be a warm and fuzzy puppy at heart, but his "ruff" edges leave something to be desired when it comes to harmonizing with Mya, the nine-year-old daughter of the Watson family and CEO wannabe. DJ often teams up with Mya's seven-year-old brother, Malik, to oppose her get-rich schemes, which include selling Girl Scout cookie-backed securities. Whether he's teaching yoga positions, such as "Duck from Driveby," or taking over the elementary school orchestra and renaming them the "Murderers Bows," this hip-hop pup is bound to be funny.
