Book Description
The Illustrated Building Glossary provides the professional user - architect, engineer, builder - with handy visual reference. Compiled from the author's own drawings and diagrams, each labelled in detail with specific technical terms, the guide follows the basic make-up of a building and its elements, to demonstrate basic technical terms as used in the construction industry.
Roxanna McDonald's book is an essential working tool for students and a useful reference for professionals in the architecture/construction industry, working in the UK and overseas. It stands out through its innovative approach to technical learning by using an image vocabulary in preference to the abstract word in order to convey information. This gives the book an all round appeal.
* Estate agents and surveyors will find the visual checklist useful when describing or analysing building aspects
* Conveyancing lawyers will find referring to the book helpful when drawing up property deeds or dealing with schedules of dilapidation
* Students using the book will be guided by the content's logical progression through the building process and, by studying pictorial examples, will find it very easy to learn the appropriate technical terms
* Foreign building professionals working in an English-speaking country will find this book a helpful, easy-to-use communication tool
* English architects working abroad can use it as an `instant communication' visual dictionary
Roxanna McDonald is a practising architect with a special interest in building conservation. She is currently living and working in France where she is involved in developing the role of the historic buildings as sustainable resources through new uses. She also teaches and coordinates exchanges of building specialists within the European Community.
* Visual checklist will be useful for describing or analysing building aspects
* Content makes a logical progression through the building process

Illustrated Dictionary Of Building Design and Construction.......2007-05-21
Designed to serve as an on-the-job quick reference for those actively engaged in the building construction industry, this easy-to-use dictionary provides an alphabetical listing of over 1,000 construction-related terms, augmented by instructive illustrations to further assist the reader in understanding the terms defined. Many of the terms included will not be found in the average dictionary or defined in any technical text-though they are without exception terms that are used in the building construction industry. In the preparation of the dictionary, a great effort was made to make the selection of terms complete, yet to keep the definitions as simple and straightforward as possible, so that they may be readily understood by all

Book Description
An updated, bound-in but conveniently removable color wheel comes with this all-inclusive reference offering the latest word on the latest paint formulations available to serve artists working in any paint medium. Opening with an analysis of the painter's ideal palette and how it is organized with primary, secondary, and intermediate hues, the guide then explores value and intensity, complementary and analogous colors, the ways in which color can be used to evoke moods, express atmospheric conditions, and other essentials relating to color choice and usage. A range of master colorists' work is also included. Stephen Quiller, author of the best-sellers "Color Choices" and "Acrylic Painting Techniques," lives in Creede, Colorado.
Customer Reviews:
confusing new color mixing book.......2000-05-19
this is stephen quiller's sequel to "color choices" with the addition of new information about neutral mixtures (Jean Dobie's "mouse power"), color value and intensity (saturation), color families, "mother color", and the latest version of quiller's color mixing wheel, one of the best available. but i was disappointed. the book suffers from a mechanical approach to color mixing or color families -- in some cases, the text of captions or whole sections is identical, with color keywords repeatedly changed. this edition deletes some of the best chapters in "color choices," such as the chapter on "finding your own vision," adding in its place a bizarre section on "color personalities" (each mixed color is associated with adjectives such as "noble" or "playful"). and quiller recommends a 28-paint (!) palette, which will create more confusion for a painter (especially a beginning painter) than all the mixing instructions can clear away. i suggest you browse this book before you buy it: "color choices" is better overall, and you can order quiller's revised color wheel from him directly, on a plastic card that is more durable than the tear-out version that comes with this book.
Painter's Guide to Color-Stephen Quiller.......2000-05-12
Visually Stimulating. Extremely informative in regard to mixing colors! I was so excited to find a book that had so much visual information about the color wheel. There are many examples to refer to and learn from. A must for any painter!

Great easy-to-create projects, neat effects.......2001-04-30
This is a great book for the decorative artist. The effects you can achieve are both stunning and easy to create. They give a unique look to any project.
The book starts out with an overview of wide color shaper types and basic strokes as well as instructions for preparing and finishing surfaces. Then it shows you how to create faux stone, faux wood, fabric looks and fantasy textures. Some projects include a malachite chest, marble table, blue patterned cupboard, kilim floorcloth, damask roller blind and ceramic tile trivet.
Further pattern recipes are in the back. Some of these include lapis lazuli, woven plaid and wavy cross-band design. The instructions for everything are excellent, demonstrated step-by-step with photos. Most projects use latex paints, glazing liquid and a water-base varnish and include a complete materials list.
My only wish for the book was a suppliers list. Wide color shapers can be difficult to find. Buy this book with the color shaper included if you can.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2002-02-26
I bought this book because it included the 3 shapers and I loved Paula Desimone's other book (co-authored with Pat Stewart) - Brush, Sponge, Stamp. This current publication does not compare with her earlier book.
What really irritated me was the fact that so many of the project instructions specified color shaper types and sizes that were NOT included with the book. In fact, a minimal amount of the designs actually use any of the three accompanying shapers. Surely she could have come up with ideas utilising the color shapers that were going to be sold with her book.
My suggestion is to buy 'Brush, Sponge, Stamp'; choose your favourite designs from this book and then go out and purchase the shapers you will need.
Easy to follow instructions, dazzling results.......2000-03-20
This book unlocks a great array of dazzling painting effects made easy by using color shapers, "brushes" with various size and shape rubber tips instead of bristles. The 3 color shapers that come with the book are of top quality.
I really enjoy the feel of the color shapers and the ease with which I learned to control them. They can be used to apply paint or manipulate or remove paint from a surface, creating endless possibilities.
The book starts with basic strokes then on to a wide variety of projects using different techniques & readily available materials, including metal, wood, ceramics & paper. There are some great effects by combining colors and glazes in layers.
The projects have clear instructions with color photos every step of the way. They are a springboard for more ideas. The color shapers are now among my favorite tools and I keep finding new ways to use them.

Nice problem/solution guide.......2006-06-15
This is a problem/solution book discussing 49 keys to using color more wisely. It utilizes 26 paintings, comparing a common approach to painting a scene with an approach making better use of color. The book has 80 pages with color plates, some pages have multiple plates, and 20 B&W. Most paintings illustrated in the discussions are smaller, simpler paintings or pieces of paintings so the points are easier to follow.
There are newer, more contemporary books on using color in landscapes which illustrate similar points but few offer as many distinct and easily digested ones.

The best companion quide for the oil painter.......2001-10-26
This book is loaded with lot's of valuable information on how to use colors in oil painting. I find it a very helpful reference for choosing, mixing, and applying color.
Each painter will greatly benefit from the material contained in this book. It's an excellent source of information as well as inspiration to anyone who enjoys painting in this medium.
The author defines and explains such basic terms and concepts as hue, value, intensity, and temperature. He lists the most commonly used colors and describes their behavior when mixed or straight out of the tube. There is a chapter on mixing color, how to make colors warmer, cooler, more intense, lighter or darker, grayer;and how to correct mixing mistakes.
Also, the author discusses color schemes; some of the palettes of the old masters; palettes for specific types of subject matter. This book also helps to sharpen your eye to color and all the atmospheric conditions. Any time I have a question, or problem I just pick up this book.
This is the best book I've found to have as a permanent reference for the studio.

If u really want to maximize the potentials of your photographic talents and make it worthwhile for you financially, this book is a necessity. i ordered it because John Harrington recommended it and av been blessed tremendously... its definitely worth more than the price tag... Also recommend getting "Best Business Practices for Photographers" by John Harrington
...An essential read for any photographer who wants to be successful..........2007-05-06
...An essential read for any photographer who wants to be successful...
I bought this book because John Harrington recommended it to me recently. I must say that it has changed the way I do business. I have found all of my negotiation "deal breakers" and I have walked away from several jobs only to have the client come back and agree to MY TERMS.
My negotiation skills were mediorcre when I first started this book. Now when I am negotiating on the phone/email or in person I no longer feel unprepared.
I would recommend this book to any photographer who wants to sharpen their negotiation skills.
-David Paul Larson
Every photographer needs to know how to negotiate to be successful in marketing their services and skills.......2005-12-05
Every photographer needs to know how to negotiate to be successful in marketing their services and skills, but most photographer's guides focus on technique and marketing and devote only cursory attention to the finer art of negotiating prices and terms. That's why it's important to have The Photographer's Guide To Negotiating in hand for any business proposal: chapters review good negotiation traits and strategies, discuss issues on stock photo sales, contracts and assignments, and provide in-depth interviews with experienced negotiators.

Only good if you play RPGs........2007-05-07
This book is great if you play many RPG titles, such as Final Fantasy. It will hook you in and make you go online to immediately read what happens after the book ends. It is to bad the writer never finished the series, with only three or four comics to go.
Kind of nice..........2005-12-16
This is a Fantasy Game made into a comic. You have the Hero, the Bad Guys, the levels and secondary characters. There is a touch of humor, but most of it just didn't DO anything for me. The plot, like many a game I have played online, didn't go anywhere and it didn't go anywhere very, very SLOWLY. Frankly, Megatokyo or Misfile kept me interested til the last page and I am waiting for more volumes to come out so I can spend my cash on them. Those artists need to be supported.
RPG World was like eating bland oatmeal. I had to remember to come back to it again and again to finally finish it off. And I am NOT waiting for the next volume. I DO not plan to spend my cash on any more of these discs. It just didn't click for me.
A great start to an excellent series........2005-08-02
I've been following this series for over a year now, and it just kept getting better. If you're a video game fan, then you'll certainly recognize "Hero" as the archetype of all lead characters in every Final Fantasy-style game ever made. If you're not, then you'll identify with "Cherry", who can be counted on to point out the ridiculous nature of those same games (you can survive being shot in the head?).
Pros:
Funny, has a (weird) plot that generally continues throughout the series, and still appeals to those who prefer gag-a-day strips.
Start of the series, so you haven't missed anything (yet).
Art style stays consistant, even allowing for the natural improvement of the artist's skills (and yes, the art was pretty good to begin with).
Easier on the eyes than staring at the computer screen.
No annoying pop-ups when turning the pages (just had to include that one).
Cons:
The book is black & white; many of the strips are in color on the net.
If you don't have net access, then you'll have to wait until October to read the next book. Of course, if you're reading this, then you probably don't need to worry about that. In fact, forget I said it. Wrote it. Whatever.
All in all, it's a worthwhile buy. If you're not sure it suits your tastes, feel free to browse a few comics on the web so you can get a feel for it.
A true Level Up from average RPG Parodies!.......2004-06-26
This is the number 1 in RPG Parody. I laughed until it hurt. If your looking for a comic that makes fun of everything from EXP to random monster battles; this is the best.
Gain Experience in your Uncontrollable Laughter Skill!.......2004-04-15
Ian Jones-Quartey is a man whom, like myself, and many of you out there, has played one too many RPGs during his lifetime, and through the process of doing so has begun to see some patterns emerge, and it was these patterns that gave rise to one of the great webcomics. "RPG World - Disc 1: Unlikely Hero Out for Adventure" is the first compilation of a continual story webcomic that could be best described as what you would get if you shoved ever RPG ever made into a blender and then hit the Frappe button. Yet, despite the fact that much of the elements of the plot, and at times even the plot itself, are hillarious mockeries of a beloved genre of video games, the RPG, the story still also manages to have strength on its own and you will soon find yourself caring for our band of unlikely heroes out to save the world one random battle at a time. It is this powerful and endearing continual story, and the characters that inhabit it, that helps RPG World to rise above other RPG Parody comics such as "Adventurers" which is just a random gag of the moment strip with no continuity inbetween. On that note, speaking of Adventurers, volume 1 contains in full all 10 strips of the Adventurers/RPG World Cross over.
So go on and buy this book, your ability to engage in uncontrollable laughter will gain some experience points for sure.
