These 'Great Camps' were to the beautiful and secluded Adirondack region what the 'Cottages' were to Newport: contradictions in terminology, but marvels of construction and architectural imagination. Truly fabulous structures, built primarily of wood and stone and set deep among the great forests, they are at once relics of a bygone age and prototypes for the contemporary architect, amateur builder, and historian.
Harvey Kaiser traces the history of the Adirondacks from their first sighting by a European in 1535, through the eras of trapping, iron mining, and lumbering, to the development of railroad and steamboat lines that led to the influx of tourists and the building of the 'Great Camps.' The sixty years from 1870 to 1930 were the heyday of these camps, the 'Gilded Age' of the Adirondacks, and Kaiser give a fascinating account both of the personalities who engineered and financed these fabulous structures and of the buildings themselves...
More than forty years after the Depression put an end to this princely life-style, the camps themselves are threatened by the forces of politics and nature. In Great Camps of the Adirondacks, Harvey Kaiser make a strong case for preservation: the obliteration of these remarkable structures would be an irreparable loss not only to our architectural heritage but to every individual to whom they are a resource and an inspiration.

From the 'opening' of the Adirondacks in the 18th Century to the present, Harvey Kaiser delivers a premier photographic history of the Great Camps of the Adirondacks. Exploring the architectural history from an owner's whinsey to the details of a porch railing, Kaiser guides the reader through a history of gorgeous excess and an age of bountiful richness that few knew. Camp Uncas (owner J.P. Morgan), Topridge (Marjorie Merriweather Post) and Nehasane (Dr. William Seward Webb) are just a few of the detailed highlights showcased in this volume. Many of the larger hotels and lesser known camps (and castles) are photographed and discussed here at length. This book is not just for the architect, builder or historian. It is a display of architectural beauty build into a unique and mysterious landscape. It is a history never to be repeated and never to be forgotten.
The seminal work on rustic architecture.......1999-09-30
The discovery of this book made me set aside all the others on rustic architecture. The author does a marvelous job in explaining the beginnings of rustic architecture and why it has a permanent place in our culture. The mix of social background and the history of the early Adirondack camps with superb photographs provides a designers guidebook. The arguments for historic preservation are skillfully written and should be read by anyone in the field.

I'm giving this the best review - but, I admit, I am the son of one of the owners of a house mentioned in the book! The house is Kildare Club. However, I'm unbiast! (SORT OF)
Anyway, I think it is an interesting book that is certainly worth reading and it revealed alot to me that I hadn't discovered about the Great Camps of the Adirondacks. (NOTE HOW I CLEVERLY INSERTED THE TITLE IN ORDER TO DELIVER A SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE. HEHE!

A great source book of information about Camp Santanoni for anyone who has visited this or any other great camp in the Adirondacks. The book is full of historical information, stories, drawings and photographs chronicalling Camp Santanoni - from the influences of Japanese culture on Robert Pruyn (Santanoni's original owner) as a young man, to the present state of this wonderful Adirondack treasure. The photos of the families influenced by Santanoni, the illustrations of the conceptual framework of the architecture, and photos of the land and supporting buildings are numerous and well placed. Simply a thorough and entertaining book.

This is one of the finest photography books that I own. Each chapter has a very interesting introduction. Mario Giacomelli has to be one of the world's greatest photographers because of the variety of his subjects. This book incudes an incredible number of Giacomelli's pictures. It is almost impossible to forget his pictures of the gypsies and priests. I plan to pass this book on to one of my children or grand children.

The title Cose Mai Viste translates literally as "things never seen," and applies here in two senses. The most direct describes works never before shown, never exhibited or published. The broader describes views that no one but Giacomelli has ever seen, moments when only he was there. Now that he is gone, only his prints remain to describe them--or transform them. As a self-taught artist who became a star of postwar Italian photography, Mario Giacomelli (1913-2000) made his name with images of the country around him, particularly the series There Are No Hands to Caress My Face, which showed young seminarians playing in the snow, in brilliant graphic contrast to their black cassocks. His single frame "The Boy from Scanno," also made its way into exceptionally wide circulation in John Szarkiowski's classic Looking at Photographs. The 230 images collected here, which range from the 1960s to the 90s, are at once familiar--like the monk playing soccer on the cover--and all new--he's playing on the grass.

Which is more important, the coffee you drink or the cup you drink it from? The choice is a difficult one for any aesthete to make, and it is only highlighted and intensified by famed Italian coffeemaker illycaff , which, since 1933, has been producing one of the world's greatest espressos, and which, since 1992, has been commissioning limited-edition coffee cup designs from internationally renowned and emerging artists, musicians, and filmmakers. If the story of the coffee begins with Francesco Illy in Trieste, the story of the cup begins in 1990 with architect and engineer Matteo Thun, who designed a white espresso cup to the exacting specifications of the Illy family. The volume and diameter had to be just so, the rim had to accept resting lips in a most practical manner, and the all-important bowl at the bottom of the cup had to conserve heat effectively. Once the prototype was approved, the family set about having it transformed with original work by the likes of Sandro Chia, Nam June Paik, James Rosenquist, Robert Rauschenberg, David Byrne, Francis Ford Coppola, Joseph Kosuth, Jeff Koons, Marina Abramovic, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Michel Comte, Jannis Kounellis, and Louise Bourgeois. Good to the last drop--unless coffee isn't your cup of tea.

A must for any ILLY COLLECTION fan........2005-10-03
Illy to some is the best coffee in the world, I can't say that since I have not tasted them all but I do love Illy, especially their espresso pods, but Illy is more than just coffee, they represent the most advanced and yet the most simple of pleasures... and their cup embodies that. This book is all about that, It covers the creation and a good decade's worth of artisitic varatations on the Illy cup.
I have been bitten by the Illy Collection bug and own a few of the sets, it's nice to have this book as a guide to the "expensive" past. The only problem is that the collection is only through 2003, so it is missing the 2004/2005 cups. Espresso has never been so stylish!

With beautiful Russ Manning art, an exotic prehistoric setting, and a non-stop action plot that never slows down, Tarzan in the Land that Time Forgot is one of the best Tarzan comics ever. Edgar Rice Burroughs never took Tarzan to Caspak, but if he had, the results might have been a lot like this story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and recommend it to anyone who likes adventure.
