Light has often been privileged as a metaphor for objectivity and truth in Western thought, a status that has been challenged by recent feminist thought as giving entitlement to the masculine. This book presents a compelling new perspective on this metaphor, and explores the role the visual plays in Western philosophy by examining the thought of Irigaray, Levinas and Merleau- Ponty. Textures of Light is one of the first studies to challenge current interpretations by presenting Irigaray as a philosopher of vision rather than touch.

Comme il faut!.......2006-01-17
"Houses like this make you want to read Balzac..." written by the editor of Maison & Jardin, this book is a treat. It may be just a coffee-table book, but it is also an assemblage of unique home interiors which are unlike those in the USA. Despite having been to France several times, I am unlikely to have the chance to see this type of decor unless I vastly improve my social contacts! Overall, I found it charming.
Disappointing.......2002-05-23
As a true follower of French design & architecture, I was disappointed. First, I am not found of "coffee table" books in paperback -- immediately it cheapens the experience. Second, I found there little guidance of substance on creating the "French touch". The photos and homes did not meet my expectations.
Brilliant and imaginative French masterpiece.......1999-05-08
Daphne de Saint Sauveur has been an inspiration to those people,who like myself,enjoy the qualities and classic poise of French decorating.
The elegance and colour shown in this book has assisted me greatly in decorating my recently purchased french provincial styled home on Sydney's north shore.
Many of the homes displayed are furnished with typical gallic flair and the country homes and gardens detail the personalities of their owners

This book is recommended by animators all over the web. I've thought about going to animation school or taking a crash 2D animation course but my funds are limited so I purchased this book instead. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn the principles of animation. Once you have mastered this book, start creating your own flash cartoons and post them on the web for the world to see. Fantastic Source Book.......2001-11-01
If you've ever considered drawing animation for a living, or for a hobby, this is definately one of the books you should have in your library. A must have for any aspiring cartoonist/animator whether you're doing traditional art or computer art. Many of the lessons learned in this book are used in both mediums!
The best animation book........2001-01-02
What more can I say about the Preston Blair book? Only that the trade paperback version is long overdue. This edition combines the two paperback versions into one and though it could have used some editing, you have everything at your fingertips. Blair's 1980 update of his 1942 classic was the better of the two books, and readers should be aware that some information in the book is contradictory, but otherwise this is without question still the best textbook on character animation yet published.
There are some weak spots. Be aware that Blair's 'guide to lipsync' has misled generations of animators and should not be taken as gospel. Synchronizing mouth action has more to do with the type of character you are working with and the type of acting you are performing; there are no 'formulas'. Once you know this, you can follow the instructions in theory without imitating the grossly overstated mouth actions in this book.
Layout and scene planning are handled cursorilly, though there is more information in the newer section. Teachers should supplement this work with other volumes. I have found it the best for Animation I students, with the more advanced ones proceeding to Shamus Culhane's ANIMATION FROM SCRIPT TO SCREEN.
Generations of artists have learned animation acting and timing from Preston Blair. It makes no difference if you use a computer or a pencil. If you are trying to create a living, believable character on screen, this is the best place to learn the basics.

Always looking for new and exciting cocktails to try, I purchased this book. Each page became more interesting, not only for the drinks presented but for the knowledge that Mr. Bondurant shares about Tahiti, it's culture, local accomodations, etc.
The photos are exceptional and each drink I have mixed has been better than the last. I have bought several as gifts for coworkers and friends. You won't be disappointed!

I have always wanted to go to the Tahitian islands but have never had the opportunity. Now, after reading "Cocktails in Tahiti", I am planning a trip to Tahiti for next Summer. I originally thought "Cocktails in Tahiti" would give me some good ideas for entertaining, but soon found out it contained many intersting nuggets about the islands and their history. To sum it up, I am packed and ready to go to these beautiful islands.
If you've ever dreamed of a tropical vacation or just need to brighten up your winter, you should read this book.

I have never been to Tahiti, but after reading the fun, informative facts about Tahiti, seeing the beautiful pictures, and sampling some of the excellent cocktail recipes, I am ready to go!
Mr. Bondurant's love and knowledge of Tahiti come through clearly in the book, which is very well laid out. It provides enough information and explains things in such a way that an amateur can make delicious Tahitian cocktails as well as the most experienced bartender. The fun facts about Tahiti, along with summaries of the total hotels and the gorgeous pictures, makes this book a must have.
Until I can take my first trip to Tahiti, this book will help bring a little Tahiti to my home.

Very complete overview of Australia, which is not realy a country, but an entire continent, with various climates and landscapes. Phillip Mathews has done a great job describing the history, the people and nature of this country, and the accompanying photos are excellent. Some of the fold-out panoramas are nearly three feet wide, and vividly sharp. The book also includes a large number of areal shots, which give an unusual view of some of the remote areas, which are still impenetrable for the regular visitor.
Going through the book, you're realy tempted to jump on a plane to this great country down under...

This book is nothing short of spectacular! I am fully impressed by the photography, the artistic layouts, color schemes, map layouts, attention to detail and overall balance betweena art and science. Notwithstanding, the scientific text and information presented in this beautiful monograph is cutting edge, but the overall impression given to the reader is that you're looking at the finest work ever published and dedicated to this paricular subject. Shell collecting, in and of itself, represents a very small microcosm in zoology, but Australia's Spectacular Cowries has elevated this science to a great new and higher level. Mr. Jackson should be commended for an excellent job, and I believe that this work has raised the bar for all other publishers attempting to capture the essence and soul of shell collecting. This book is truly a piece of art! I have never seen any work on the subject that even compares to this effort. Many others I know will want to share and appreciate the pleasure of owning this top of the line jewel for decades to come.
