Book Description

No visitor to Britain—past or present—should be without this glorious guidebook. England's Thousand Best Houses is a panorama of an ancient heritage, a compendium of a thousand delightful country houses from all periods—all of which are open to the public.

Breathtaking Blenheim Palace, the monumental jewel of Oxfordshire . . . the Duke of Devonshire's opulent Derbyshire seat of Chatsworth . . . the extraordinary baroque vision of Castle Howard in Yorkshire . . . lesser known gems like Little Morton Hall—all of these celebrated houses come to life and mingle with the yet-to-be discovered. England's Thousand Best Houses is a must-have for readers from veteran architects to armchair travelers and anyone embarking on an exploration of the stately treasures scattered throughout England.

4 out of 5 stars Sumptuous Reading.......2007-09-15

I loved this book. It's a chance to catch glimpses of the big houses, a few small houses, and a sprinkling of those in-between.
The author's word pictures are wonderful, and he has quite a sense of humor, so it's fun to read.
The only drawback would be the dearth of pictures - that's a little disappointing, particularly when he's talking about architectural features. There's a glossary for some of these, but pictures would be better for those of us who are not as informed about these things as we should be.

3 out of 5 stars Not enough photos.......2007-07-15

More writing than photos - so not very good for armchair travellers. But very good if you are actually there touring around the country.

5 out of 5 stars Great Deals of Fun.......2004-11-12

This is the second volume in what I hope is a long series of "England's Thousand Best..." and it does not disapoint. It is basically a listing of the thousand houses, all open to the public (though some more accessible than others), that Mr. Jenkins believes to be "the best" in England.

With each listing is a brief description, including an explanation of why Mr. Jenkins put the house on his list. These alone are worth reading, even if you cannot travel to each house, as some of the reasons might surprise you: they range from famous personages associated with the houses to interesting architectural details to important historical events.

If you are looking for a book that offers historical analysis about country houses or the wealthy, this is not it. It is, however, a very interesting travelogue that is essential to anyone who wishes to tour around England and would like to scratch deeper than the usual "Blenheim, Chatsworth, Knole" trifecta. It is also fun for anyone interested in trivia on the subject of architecture or English history, as it is full of anecdotes and facts that one does not usually hear.

        2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-06-13

I am fairly new to glaze development, though I have read Hopper's "The Ceramic Spectrum", so I ordered this hoping to expand on what I learned from that book. I was quite excited when I recieved it, but quickly began to feel rather disappointed.

Here's a few reasons why: the first thing that bothered me about this book is that it only has a few colour photos - the rest are black and white, and of only medium quality. Secondy, I was also a little irritated when I discovered that the author seems to have very definite opinions about how ash should be used in glazes, and seems to resist usages that don't fit well within his scheme of things. Thirdly, much of the text covers the nominal compositions of various different ashes, and all the while, the author is saying things that basically amount to "You can't ever really tell what's in a specific ash sample without testing it." Finally, most of the photos seem to be of work by a single artist (perhaps the way the author thinks ash glazes *should* look?) ... it would be nice to see a wider variety of work, especially considering the long history of ash as both accidental and intentional glazes and glaze components.

All in all, I would not recommend this book for those who are interested in using ash glazes. To them, I would recommend Robin Hopper's "The Ceramic Spectrum", and say "Try it and see".

4 out of 5 stars Glazes from trees and vegetables.......2000-04-10

Robert Tichane shows you the wonderful and unpredictable effects of ash glazes made from various plants. He gives extensive detail on the chemical composition of ashes achieved by using different parts of trees (from root to leaves) and from using leaves of different plants (ranging from beech, oak to vegetables like cabbages and lettuce). This book is suited for a more experienced potter with some knowledge of chemistry and much patience. Still, I found it very inspiring despite not understanding some of his more detailed discussions.

        Book Description

Ash glaze, as the name suggests, is a glaze derived from ashes. The earliest such glazes can be traced back to the Shang period in China (c. 1500 B.C.), and it is thought they were produced accidentally, the result of white-hot wood ash being carried through the kiln with the draft of the fire and settling onto the pots, where the searing white heat melted it to a glass. Three thousand years later, wood ash remains an important and immensely popular feature of pottery glaze making.

For the modern potter, the satisfaction of working with ash glazes comes from following an ancient tradition as well as from using materials that occur naturally. The results of different wood ashes often vary dramatically, making it possible to achieve a wide range of unique finishes. Even wood from the same species of tree garnered just miles apart can produce subtly different results.

In this second edition of Ash Glazes, Phil Rogers covers the history of ash glazes and proceeds to discuss the practicalities of collecting and testing wood ashes and transforming them into glazes. In the final portion of the book, he looks at the work of some leading international potters whose work is typified by the array of finishes that they achieve through their use of wood ash glazes. Images of their work offer an impressive display of the colors and techniques possible through this glazing technique.

Ash Glazes has been designed as an introduction and practical handbook to the subject. It will provide inspiration for working potters and delight for all those interested in contemporary ceramics.

This book has 5 bifold pages. That works out to about $2 per page and it isn't worth it. We bought it sealed and will try to return it. There is no story but a bit of text on each page that is way of the heads of pop-up-book fan age.

I have loved all the other Disney Fairies books we have purchased. We have especially liked the chapter books and A Poem for Tink & Mysterious Messages (a much beter value).

                  Book Description

On a clear morning in 1912, Harriet Quimby had a vision--she would become the first woman to fly solo across the English Channel. If she were to veer off course by even five miles, she could end up in the North Sea, never to be heard from again. But she took the risk, anyway.
Bestselling author Marissa Moss and award-winning artist C. F. Payne team up to tell this little-known historic story of a spirited woman who dared to take flight.

During their stay, each girl will be tempted to commit the ultimate crime of betrayal as Dr. Foreman cleverly tries to turn them against each other -- until they learn that the only way to survive is to stick together...and fight back. THESE TOUGH GIRLS NEVER MET THEIR MATCH -- UNTIL THEY MET EACH OTHER. Phoebe No one will hear her cries now. They put the helmet over my head and fastened the straps so that it was on tightly. I resisted but I couldn't keep my arms from being straightened and then a strap was fixed over my chest. It was just as it had been when I woke up in the plane that brought me to this hell. Robin She wants to break free -- but where will she fly? I'm going to strangle my mother darling when I get away from here. She just wanted to get me out of her hair while she tries to become a famous country singing star. Just go, she told me, I'm better off. What she really meant was she was better off. Teal Once she was rich and entitled -- now she's just trying to survive. Don't you want to try to run away with me? You can't want to stay here a moment longer than you have to. Maybe we just have to follow the dirt road out. Maybe they're lying to us and we're not that far from a town. I won't make it through another day like this."

                      5 out of 5 stars A great V.C, Andrews novel.......2006-07-04

this really is a great novel by V.C. Andrews or the ghost writer. Like many other of V.C. Andrews, these girls went through many things...actually they got in trouble. So, they got sent to this place in the middle of nowhere. Then, the girls are treated as if they are criminals.

The headmistress of the place won't allow the girls to do anything except talk to her. Then more continues. It left me hanging for more and the ending was a surprise in my opinion.

                      5 out of 5 stars SILENCE!.......2006-02-01

This novel is a perfect read. I normally DO NOT comment on reading material, but this one deserves it. The character outline is superb. The usual suspects are here, as with any VCA novel, but there are great twists. The mystery is enthralling without being irritating. The setting is eloquently described. This book had me looking at the wall at it's completion. A great rarity within the literay field, to be depressive that it has ended. I'm starting to feel like Annie Wilkes in "Misery". I'll stop. Belive me, I don't care much for reading, but this novel has it all.

This was such a good book, showing how any one who is willing to survive will. I loved it!

4 out of 5 stars Twisted, but necessary........2005-06-16

After reading and reviewing the prequel "Broken Wings" I told myself that if these girls did not shape up and become decent human beings I would be upset. In "Broken Wings" the girls are so selfish in regards to their friends and parents, such whiney brats, and using their lives to excuse the horrible crimes they do that I felt no sympathy for them. Normally a VC Reader feels sympathy for the main character(s) and loathes the authority figures. In the first novel I sympathized with the authority figures...until the girls are sent to Dr. Foreman's school.

In an ironic twist we go from resenting the girls and cheering for the authority figures to the complete opposite. The girls are in a world unimaginable to themselves or their parents. They have literally been thrust into hell with no chance for parole and Dr. Foreman is the gate-keeper with the devilish horns.

Dr. Foreman spouts a lot of psycho-babble that in the dead of night sounds logical, but in conjunction with her practices it becomes psychotic. She states that the "evil in the girls must be buried." Okay, nothing so wrong with that except she literally places the girls in a coffin. They are not buried, but they spend a night in a coffin. She also tells them that in order to be different, better, girls they need to go through a "rebirth." Again, fine, lots of people are "born again" either in life experiences or religion. But only the Foreman girls have to wear diapers in their re-birth.

But, through it all the girls remain stead-fast and true to themselves. They actually have learned but not because they were given love and compassion, which they so deperately sought, but through the hardships. They also learn that they have to love themselves first. If they can accomplish that then anything is possible.

In the end the girls are indeed stronger more mature young women and Dr. Foreman gets her just-rewards. It is truly a fascinating book and takes you to a place you are glad you're not in. Like a good Soap Opera...it reminds you that your life isn't so bad.

4 out of 5 stars "GIRLS CAN BE ANYTHING THEY WANT TO BE".......2006-09-19

Using a conversation with her brothers as a springboard Charlene documents the aeronautical achievements of women. When she's asked what she wants to be when she grows up, she replies, "I'm going to be a pilot. I'm going to fly an airplane!"

This reply , since brothers will be brothers, brings forth a bit of mirthful disbelief. Charlene stands her ground announcing that girls can do anything boys can do - including being a pilot.

She reinforces her stance by informing them that women have been flying airplanes almost as long as men have, and that years before the Wright brothers' first flight "Leila Marie Cody flew in a kite."

Charlene has done her research well. She further informs them that the first African-American licensed to fly was a woman, recounts the achievements of Amelia Earhart, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, and more.

Rosalie M. Shepherd's full page sun-washed illustrations represent the vastness of the sky with her closing painting set on a sunny yellow background serving as a happy reminder that "Girls can be anything they want to be."

Collaboratively written by Lynn M. Homan and Thomas Reilly, Girls Fly! is the story of Charlene, a young girl who dreams of flying an airplane. When Charlene's brothers scoff at the idea, she teaches them about real women of history who helped pioneer and celebrate flight -- such as Leila Marie Cody who flew in a kite years before the Wright brothers flew their plane at Kittyhawk, and Helen Richey who piloted a Ford Trimotor commercial passenger airplane in 1934). Warmly illustrated by Rosalie M. Shepherd, Girls Fly! has a singularly uplifting and timeless message -- all young women everywhere can achieve their dreams.

5 out of 5 stars PIN-UPS FROM THE DARK SIDE.......2006-01-20

Daughters of Darkness Vol. 3 is yet another outstanding Gallery Girls collection from SQ Productions. This series focuses on the evil ladies: vampires, demons, wicked witches and more, all done with the usual sexiness and sensuality by SQP's brilliant lineup of artists. The book is off to a rousing start with a dark, brooding cover of a demoness by the supremely talented Dorian Cleavenger. The roll call of artists in this edition include: Blas Gallego, Boada, Capdevila, Pedro Cuevas, Sean Gallimore, Dave Hoover, Pelaez, and Daniel Pascarelli.

The great Pelaez sets the tone for the interior with her mesmerizing dark angel in thigh high leather boots. Ovi Hondro's chilling piece features a lovely vampire with a forked tongue drinking from a chalice filled with fresh blood. Maraschi gives us a depraved sorceress, topless and casting a spell while two large spiders crawl over her body.

Pedro Cuevas ratchets up the eroticism with his piece showing two nude demons cavorting on a bed; Gallimore checks in with his illustration of a beautiful, topless, bat-winged vampire that is a true eye-popper. Boada's highlight is a nude blonde, bound by chains as a nude brunette dominatrix in garter and stockings caresses her temptingly. Pelaez then comes back with another exquisite pin-up...this time of a dark, nude vampire wearing a headdress of holly and ivy with the numbers 666 tattooed on her behind.

Daughters of Darkness puts the ladies in the realm of true malevolence and vice but as always they are beautiful, curvaceous, and the object of every man's desire. But be careful or you just might get bit!

First of all, I would like to tell everyone that this book contains BLACK AND WHITE DRAWINGS only. I bought it expecting at least a few illustrations in full colour like the amazing looking cover.

As for the actual drawings themselves, I liked a couple of them but there was not really anything that I found as good or as satisfying as the cover. It's not exactly bad art, but I just didn't find anything that was particularly interesting. Just your standard fantasy females.

Overall I'd say I found the book rather disappointing. It needed a lot more darkness and nastiness and weird creatures and evil beings, etc.

This is one of those books you end up hanging onto only because you like the cover. (This is what I am now doing.)
