Book Description

Before it was famous for its midcentury commercial design, Los Angeles was already a treasure trove of elegant architecture in the Art Deco style. Products of the streamlined design aesthetic of the 1920s and New Deal building during the 1930s, many of these buildings fell into disrepair or were marred by ill-fitting façades in later years. But recently they have become the focus of intense preservation efforts, appreciated once again for their timeless charm. This glorious survey features hundreds of color photographs from across the L.A. Basin—with dazzling details from the majestic to the whimsical—that define Art Deco style. With a foreword by Bevis Hillier, the critic who coined the term Art Deco, here's a gem for Deco buffs and Los Angeles aficionados alike.

5 out of 5 stars Art Deco Gems.......2006-12-11

A must own book on the Los Angeles Art Deco era. Fantastic pictures and descriptions of buildings past and present in Los Angeles. You can really tell the author did his homework on this one! Buy it.

2 out of 5 stars LA Deco form A to Z.......2006-03-16

As a current member of 3 Art Deco Socities (NY, LA and Chicago)and owner of at least 30 books on Art Deco, this book told me nothing new or enlightning. I am not in any way a Deco authority, but it would be nice to read (and see) something new about LA. Most photos are a rehash of already printed material and many need additional shots to explain the architecture. For example: the Wiltern Theatre. The interior is 1000% more fantastic than the one exterior photo used. The Wiltern is one of the best examples of theatre deco ever designed.

But, for those that have never set foot in LA, this book may suffice their deco urge.

5 out of 5 stars Deco Delights of LaLa Land!.......2006-01-31

If you're "into" this sort of thing--and you enjoy marveling at Deco Architecture and sculptural designs--L.A.'s treasures add up to the next most bountiful trove of this type offered by the Three Deco Capitals of the U.S. (the Big Apple and ChiTown lead the way). But clearly the City where the aesthetic entered our collective consciousness by way of its movie product and its film set designs is the obvious place to look. LA's major growth occurred during the heyday of Deco and so much of its urban conceptualization was permeated by that design sense. This author is very informative regarding the artists and designers that created LA's "gems." So it provides an interesting read as well as enthralling eye-candy.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!.......2006-01-14

This book is a must for lovers of Art Deco architecture (which I am)and for lovers of Los Angeles (which I also am)and for those who are tired of east coast critics who decry Los Angeles as being void of architecture. To say that is so far from the truth and this book illustrates it perfectly.

5 out of 5 stars LAX Deco.......2005-09-23

Arnold Schwartzman has taken all the photos in this lovely book and as he says in the introduction he decided to focus mostly on detail rather than a whole building. A wise choice because so much of what he covers is not exactly at eye level. Just flick through the pages and be amazed at the amount of exterior Deco delights still standing and hopefully now preserved.

Hundreds of photos are arranged in these four chapters, Tile & Terrazzo, Glass & Neon, Stone & Plaster and Metal & Wood and as Schwartzman took them the color and compositions have a pleasant evenness throughout the pages and this certainly makes all the detail sparkle.

I particularly liked the chapter on stone and plaster with dozens of photos showing just how creative some stonemasons were decades ago, just look pages 122-123 and see six stunning interpretations of the American Eagle.

If you live in Los Angles this super book will be a useful checklist of what to see (the captions all give the street address) for others, like me, it is a good visual record of the best Art Deco gems in LA.

2007 UPDATE: Schwartzman has published a similar book about Art Deco in London (ISBN 1845132432) lots of photos especially of exterior detailing not really visible from the ground.

      5 out of 5 stars Terrific Books.......2006-02-11

The selection of artists in this book is excellent. I am actually one of the artists featured in their other book: How did you paint that? 100 ways to paint your favorite subjects.
My specialty is clown and circus subject matter. Please view my work at my site: www.clownartist.com.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for figure artist.......2005-12-13

4 out of 5 stars International Artist Magazine - People and Figures .......2004-07-31

If you receive International Artist Magazine, and I highly recommend that you subscribe if you haven't already, then you've seen all of these paintings featured in this book before in the magazines. BUT - you do get an expanded view of the artwork, as well as a more in-depth interview with each individual artist, since each artist gets their own page in the book.
The "Find-It-Faster" feature in the book, (pictorial pages of content) is not much more than filler, in my opinion. I would have prefered 17 more featured artists, instead of 17 pages of reduced work of those already in the book. The artwork on the front of the book is indeed shown in more depth on pages 6 and 7, by the way. [see previous reviewer's statement]
The last page titled, "Terms you should know" is an abbreviated list of art terms every artist should already know. Oddly, the list stops at the letter "L" for "lifting." I believe there are other art terms starting with M through Z that are worthy of inclusion. Perhaps the other books have included those letters.
Overall, if you enjoy International Artist Magazine and long for greater details, this book series is for you since you can pick and choose your specific genre: people and figures; landscapes; still life and florals; seascapes, rivers and lakes; favorite subjects; and flowers and gardens.

4 out of 5 stars Emphasis on oil.......2004-07-20

A hundred different painters explain how they tackled in their paintings one of the most difficult, elusive and rewarding subjects: people. Each painting gets a page long explanation, focused in one of the techniques employed or in some creativity issue relevant to the subject matter. The fact that most artists list the colors they used is definitely a plus. My only qualm with this book are that, being watercolor my medium of choice, I found this books places a lot of attention in oil (and if you're a pastelist or use some other technique, you're in an even worse position). Another minor flaw is the fact that the beautiful picture on the cover is not of those analyzed inside. However, I am being nitpicky, as this book is beatiful and inspiring, and will help anyone seeking to expand his or her creative horizons-

This book is ok for what it is, which is a collection of 100 paintings by different artists and a few tidbits they share. Inspirational, maybe to some. Instructional, not in the slightest. Tips... not that I saw, though I could have missed them.

The book and paintings might offer some insight to those wanting to see what can be accomplished with the various mediums and palettes of colors. It might offer some exposure to differing styles. It's not going to teach much to most though. Still I find it well worth the (used) price I paid.

This book is a nice book with a lot of nice pictures and reviews of these pictures from the painters. But the painters did not go into any specifications about how they made the water look so real or what type of brushes they used. There are no directions or instructions on how to reproduce one of the paintings. I was looking for a book on how to paint real looking pictures for advanced painters and this was not that book.

This is a good book to be used as a springboard for your own work. It has works in different mediums, each artist briefly describing how they came to their finished work; it is not meant to be a 'how-to'; rather, to stimulate and hopefully jumpstart your temporary artist's block. It is also good to read other artist's technical approach to a subject.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of pictures.......2005-09-07

I have about any art book imaginable and ordered this from an Artist International Magazine sales pitch. It has 100 different artists with no more than 20 sentences describing their "technique". I would not recommend this book for much other than seeing different paintings of different artists. And I hadn't heard of any of the painters at that.

Julia Margaret Cameron's women are, in a word, lovely. The 19th-century photographer was best known in her lifetime for her portraits of such major figures of the era as Robert Browning, Thomas Carlyle, Charles Darwin, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Alfred Tennyson--many of whom were her friends and neighbors on England's Isle of Wight. But her rich images of women, which convey a wide range of real emotion and experience rarely openly expressed during the Victoria era, are arguably her strongest, most important works. Taking themes from the Bible, mythology, literature, and Renaissance painting, Cameron modeled the women around her--friends, servants, relatives--as Ophelia, Juliet, Queen Esther, Rachel, A Bacchante, Guinevere, and Mary, among others. Julia Jackson, the photographer's niece and future mother of Virginia Woolf, was Cameron's favorite model--and the one woman Cameron always cast as herself, titling one 1867 image My Favorite Picture of All My Works. My Niece Julia. Cameron's softly lit, unsmiling women with unpinned hair are full of sensuality, longing, sadness, and beauty. Their powerful emotions fill the dark shadows and diffused backgrounds of their portraits.

The plates for the book were borrowed from collectors around the world and reproduced on creamy, heavy stock that does fair justice to the original albumin prints. As Cameron was less concerned with technical exactitude than the essence of the image, the blurring brought on by a model's movement or insufficient light is faithfully maintained, serving to heighten the mystery and allure of the images. Three essays by noted art historians place Cameron and her work in historical and social context. And appendices offering biographical data on the models and a reproduction of Cameron's original price catalog are a substantive complement to the photographs. Julia Margaret Cameron's Women is an excellent example of an expertly conceived and beautifully executed artist monograph. --Jordana Moskowitz

5 out of 5 stars An Often missed Pre-Raphaelite Vision.......2000-03-25

This amazing book is well worth the investment. These photos still have the power to knock one over the head with their dizzying beauty. Too often people look to the men who made up the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood for an ideal of the Victorian woman. For a fresh look, one should explore Victoriana through the eyes of the women themselves. Cameron's photography is the perfect counterpart to Christina Rosetti's poetry. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Not merely an expensive coffee table book........1999-01-02

Most photographs here were made in ca. 1870. Looking through the book, I imagine that at that time photography was still so new, so unprecedented, that no one yet had idea of what portrait photography was to become. An art? Or a detailed recording of what the eye perceives? In this ambiguity, Julia Margaret Cameron shows herself in this volume to be great artist, a portrait photographer second to none. In the faces of her women, I can see stories and history as recorded nowhere else.

Most notable is the series of images of Julia Jackson. (She also appears on the front and back covers.) One can see her life evolve over the time span of the photos. These images become even more interesting upon learning she was mother of Vanessa Bell and Virginia Woolf. So here at last is the real Mrs. Ramsey.

              Book Description

rom Life tells the story of the greatest portrait photographer of the Victorian Age, Julia Margaret Cameron. Born in Calcutta in 1815, she married Charles Hay Cameron in 1865 and settled down to the quiet life of a typical Victorian colonial; but beneath this conventional exterior she harbored a growing interest in the new photographic technologies that would allow images to be reproduced and preserved in a permanent form. Shortly after her marriage she began a long and affectionate correspondence with Sir John Herschel, the world-renowned scientist, who kept her informed about new developments in photography. In 1863, Cameron emerged as the leading portrait photographer of the day. Her work was chronicled in the diaries of her niece, Virginia Woolf, and she produced a series of portraits of dis-tinguished Victorians, including Tennyson, Carlyle, and Darwin. This is a fascinating and meticulously researched biography of a remarkable female artist who was decades ahead of her time.
