Book Description

Tucked between the housing developments and golf courses of the Orange County coast lies a small settlement of rustic beach cottages seemingly frozen in time. Crystal Cove Cottages is the first history of this uniquely preserved beach spot that has lured travellers and campers since the 1920s. Deemed by the National Register of Historic Places to be "the last intact example of California beach vernacular architecture," it is now a registered state park whose cottages are newly available for public overnight visits. From silent-film location to rum-runners' hideout, scenic setting for a vibrant landscape painting community to 1950s luau-party headquarters, Crystal Cove has all the while remained a bohemian yet family-friendly village. Ten sidebars on notable individual cottages highlight the Cove's distinct and often amusing architectural evolution. Crystal Cove Cottages captures the nostalgic ambiance of seaside Americana.

5 out of 5 stars Crystal Cove Cottages: Islands in Time on the CA Coast.......2005-09-15

From the dust cover of this beautiful book to the last pages, readers are treated to beautiful photography, copies of lovely paintings, and a narrative about the history of this unique place on the CA coast. The book is divided into time frames starting in 1917 and continuing to 2001. Each segment gives the reader a glimpse into the recent past, of simplier times and the quest for life on the CA seashore. This book is very readable, a feast for the eyes and one that will join my permanent collection of very special books. Suitable for display as a prized coffee table book.

    Book Description

Few historical icons can match the evocative power of the medieval suit of armour, and this epic new book is a complete course in the tools and techniques of the modern armourer's art. Through more than 1,000 detailed photos and clear instruction, Brian Price presents a working handbook for aspiring and active armourers who want to develop their skills in the production of medieval armour in the style of the 14th century. The book is divided into four sections: a sweeping history of armour and its production from its medieval roots to its modern revival; a practical introduction to all the tools and supplies necessary to equip a modern workshop; a thorough review of key techniques; and a series of actual courses in constructing armoured defenses for the head, body, arm, hand and leg. Taking the reader through the construction of an authentic medieval harness from conception to completion, Techniques of Medieval Armour Reproduction is a vital addition to the libraries of serious craftsmen, historians, collectors and researchers.

5 out of 5 stars Got safety glasses??.......2007-10-01

Good book. BUT compleatly failed to mention safety glasses. These are IMPORTANT. you need to get a good pair and wear them when you are working in your shop. unless you think you will look good with a eyepatch.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute must for the armorer.......2006-04-14

I have yet to find a better book for armoring. Nearly every fundamental is covered.

Tools, stock, techinque, buying tips, and even history is covered.

The Maille section is somewhat lite but there are other books that are fully dedicated to that discipline.

It's worth every penny. You can't go wrong with this book.

    4 out of 5 stars A rather useful book.......2006-03-15

This is a book on how to build armor. Tools, techniques, materials, workspace needed, cost estimates are all part of it. I make leather armor for re-enactors, so much of what was taught here was not directly applicable. However, there are chapters on how to measure, pattern, and cut. These are useful even if the material used isn't metal but leather. There are even some basic instructions on leatherworking. Overall, a pretty straightforward work. I recommend it for anyone who is interested in armor construction, collecting, or re-enacting.

5 out of 5 stars Incredable insight into armour making.......2005-09-21

This book is an awsome read, very interesting and the info on constructing armour is just incredable. Every aspect is covered even lining the armour to make it more comfortable, if you are intersted in medieval armour this book is second to none.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, but..........2004-01-30

This book is incredibly informative for someone like myself when I got it. I had just began to make armour under a master's tutelage. It's considered required reading by most armouring groups that I know of.

However, it teaches you slightly less than you might realize, and certainly teaches some biases. For example, Price's personal views are clearly reflected in the book, not as his opinions, but stated as fact. When read by itself, this isn't something noticable, but when coupled with "The Armourer and his Craft", by Charles ffoulkes (inexpensive book, and definately a must read for armourers) it's quite dramatic at times.

However, having said that, I agreed with Mr. Price on a lot of his opinions. There are conflicts of interest though, when he states repeatedly some of the basic tenents of armouring, yet contradicts them with some of his personal choices.

Another beef I have with the book is the way in which pictures of armor that are CLEARLY reproductions are toted as being EXTREMELY well made, when quite frankly, they aren't, and certainly shouldn't be used as guides. (For example. dish your cuisses folks.. don't just curl them). Some of these nuances aren't apparent until you immerse yourself in images of the real stuff first, to develop your "eye". If you try to develop your "eye" with repro work, your best work will never compare to the originals.

I'm not claiming mastery, or that I'm better than anyone that's gotten their stuff pictured, I'm just saying that you need REAL reference pics of REAL armour. Aside from that, the book REALLY holds your hand and builds a very strong learning foundation. It's also a great place to refer back to as you go through the various stages of making your armour. It's certainly inspiring, I just recommend caution, and suggest that you keep asking questions, and getting second opinions rather than take the whole book at face value.

      5 out of 5 stars Recommended.......2005-10-23

This book starts out by introducing basic concepts such as exposure, composition, lightning and how this effects landscape photographs. It then continues with an in-depth description of how to approach various landscapes and weather conditions. The text is clearly written and each concept emphasized with illustrative examples. The book can be followed by novices, but the large amount of tips and tricks should definitely attract more experienced photographers. Also nice about this book, is that the description of camera gear is done in a very general way, omitting examples of todays hardware (outdated tomorrow). Reading this book has strengthened my technical background and given me a lot of ideas that I'm eager to try out. I have no trouble recommending it.

There I was thinking I knew about taking photograhs, but I learnt such a lot, and the sample pictures demonstrate with great clarity what the focus should and can be.

As a result I am now looking for more books from Michael Coyne.

3 out of 5 stars some useful tips..........2005-09-21

I bought the lonely planet travel photography guide a few years ago and absolutely loved it! I learned a lot of the basics and really improved my "photo taking" skills. Therefore I was very excited when i found out about the publication of this book. However this people photography guide was disappointing. It provides some useful tips on taking photographs of people but the photos inside the book are not particularly inspiring. Some are good but many are just so-so. (whether one likes a photo or not is very subjective, in my view, but the photos inside this book are really not that exciting. may be i was expecting more from an expert in the field)

4 out of 5 stars Good book for intermediate level photographers.......1999-10-07

Beautiful photographs. Good format. Describes how the photographer sees, thinks, and responds to produce vivid, well composed photos. Could benefit from more technical information: shutter speed, aperture, area selected for metering. Author relies heavily on multiple filter usage and exclusively on Fuji Velvia, thus a fairly narrow style is presented. A good book for intermediate photographers learning the process of composition.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent value.......1999-09-27

An excellent book on landscape photography. The layout of the book is very different from other books on the subjects, and you'll either love it or hate it. I love it. The seeing-thinking-acting concept behind each picture is great. All of the pictures are excellent quality, and they're all very inspiring.

4 out of 5 stars An accessible, interesting intro to travel photography.......2003-05-29

Mr. Busselle's experience as a travel photographer shines through from the first page, where he gives the first of many tidbits of useful and straightforward advice. Specifically, he states that while many people choose to photograph their vacation, most of their pictures will represent their own interests instead of capturing their experience as a whole. In retrospect many of my vacation photos have a similar themes and as a whole my vacation photo album is more redundant then it ought to be.

Essentially, this guide's goal is to explain by example how to create an interesting, representative, photo essay of your trip. Each page shows off two or more of Mr. Busselle's photos around varying themes (such as landscape, people, flowers) and describes in a simple formulaic manner one or more of those pictures. These descriptions are broken into 3 categories: Seeing, Thinking and Acting. Each page in this book can essentially be taken in independently from the rest of the book - which greatly increases it's value as a coffee table book once you've read it through. For me the value of each page was two-fold. First it made me more aware of another subject which I might be leaving out of my own photo albums, and second, gives a brief description of what went into one of the specific photos (Why pick this light? What filters were used? Where to put the camera?).

Perhaps my favorite aspect of this book was that I felt the photos were accesible. While Busselle's photos are leaps and bounds better then my own, I didn't feel intimidated by the subjects he choose or that the decisions he made in capturing them were beyond me. I feel much more aware of the type of subjects I will want to capture on my next trip, and I feel like I'll think more thoroughly about how I want to capture them. I also finish the book as a fan of Busselle's work.

What's left to make this a five star book? I felt that in a few instances the explaination stopped short of what I required. Occasionally, there are tidbits about selling your photos which seemed somewhat extaneous in the context of the rest of the helpful explainations of lighting or composition. It's also a shame that some of the photos span across the spine of the book, making them less pleasant to look at in general.

With that, I'm going to make a checklist of the photos I'd like to have from my next trip, and when I'm out there I'll have many more options about how to capture those subjects then the last time around.

5 out of 5 stars Different approach that works well.......2001-01-29

The layout of this book is different, and it is very helpful the way it is done. On each two page spread there is one photograph that the author goes into details of what it looked like in real life, what he was thiniking about how the photo should come out, and what proceeducres he used to get there (what filters, what rules of composition, what lighting challenges, etc.). Then also on the same two page spread, another one or two photos supporting the same idea, and some additional information blurbs. It all works very well and does help one look and learn.

      4 out of 5 stars Bawdy fun.......2006-11-03

Lann is another of Thorne's lovely, bedhopping heroines. This time, the setting is a space fantasy: zap guns, space ships, and anatomically detailed robots. Our heroine is a dark haired super-spy in a lushly rejuvenated body. Her beat is the dark underside Altair-Main, which she prowls in her guise as dancer and performance artist of the intimate kind.

The format resembles Thorne's Ghita: it centers on our top-heavy heroine, usually accompanied by her satyric greybeard, and grinning sidekick. The greybeard suffers a rejuvenation mishap and ends up as an aging lecher in a pre-adolescent body. The robotic sidekick is a specialist in unarmed combat - mostly because the arm keeps falling off.

It's a amusing exploration of sexy end of the adventure/spy/babe genre. It stops short of being blatant porn, but sometimes goes well beyond believability of plot. If you have adult tastes and a sense of humor, there's a lot to like here.

      //wiredweird

4 out of 5 stars An unlabellable comic strip........2005-11-10

With Lann, Frank Thorne switches from a sword-and-sorcery strip (with Ghita of Alizarr) to an uncommon space opera fantasy. Like Ghita, Lann is one of the most liberated women of all times. She has two fellows too : Shard, the old dirty man, and Glitch the droid.
Lann strip shares the same qualities as Thorne's previous creation : like in Ghita you'll find humor, eroticism, credible personalities, a sensual drawing and an infectious joie de vivre.
Frank Thorne has proved once again that independence of mind and freedom of language don't necessarily mean coarseness, even if some of Ghita's readers back in the late 70s seemed to think the opposite. Frank Thorne's creations are not made to please everyone and this is what's interesting indeed : Thorne's comic strips seem to be meant to please him first (which is not so common after all.)
Finally, Frank Thorne's available works are so rare that one shouldn't let them slip, so on you go !

              Book Description

This book contains articles accepted for presentation at the 4th IFIP Working Conference on Dependable Computing for Critical Applications. 21 papers selected from a total of 95 submitted articles address all aspects of dependability, a broad term defined as the degree of trust that may justifiably be placed in a system's reliability, availability, safety, security and performance. The presentations aim to contribute to a unified understanding and integration of these concepts, so future computer based systems will indeed be more dependable. In addition contributions to three panel sessions are included: The first, entitled "Formal Methods for Safety in Critical Systems" explored the role of formal methods in specifying and assessing system safety; the second, entitled "Qualitative versus Quantitative Assessment of Security?" debated the role that methods based on mathematical logic and stochastic techniques ought to play in assessing system security; and the third entitled "Common Techniques for Fault-tolerance and Security" explored techniques that are useful for attaining both fault-tolerance and security.
