Always looking for new and exciting cocktails to try, I purchased this book. Each page became more interesting, not only for the drinks presented but for the knowledge that Mr. Bondurant shares about Tahiti, it's culture, local accomodations, etc.

I have always wanted to go to the Tahitian islands but have never had the opportunity. Now, after reading "Cocktails in Tahiti", I am planning a trip to Tahiti for next Summer. I originally thought "Cocktails in Tahiti" would give me some good ideas for entertaining, but soon found out it contained many intersting nuggets about the islands and their history. To sum it up, I am packed and ready to go to these beautiful islands.
If you've ever dreamed of a tropical vacation or just need to brighten up your winter, you should read this book.

I have never been to Tahiti, but after reading the fun, informative facts about Tahiti, seeing the beautiful pictures, and sampling some of the excellent cocktail recipes, I am ready to go!
Mr. Bondurant's love and knowledge of Tahiti come through clearly in the book, which is very well laid out. It provides enough information and explains things in such a way that an amateur can make delicious Tahitian cocktails as well as the most experienced bartender. The fun facts about Tahiti, along with summaries of the total hotels and the gorgeous pictures, makes this book a must have.
Until I can take my first trip to Tahiti, this book will help bring a little Tahiti to my home.

I recently ordered this book - what a disappointment! This book profiles luxury beach hotels around the world and includes leading hotels in locales such as the Seychelles, Maldives, Oman, Bora Bora and numerous other places. There are two problems however. First, the quality of the pictures is inconsistent - some pictures are good but there are too many that are blurry. Also, many of the pictures are from the hotels themselves. The problem with this is that the pictures can be found on the websites of these hotels already and can be viewed for free. Second, the descriptions of the hotels are poorly written and provide next to no information. I could go on but why bother - Skip this one!

what a great book. I never knew you could achieve such a complex looking block with just 1 fabric. I've made 3 different blocks the hardest part was chosing the one I liked the best.

If you love those lucious large-scale prints, but don't know how to make them work in a project, try this technique! The piecing is easy and FUN, because every block is different. You'll get addicted !! Very clear instructions and lots of photos to make the process simple.

I took a class with Maxine to learn this technique before the book was published. I bought the book just to have it. It is well written. The quilt blocks are really quick and easy to make and I've gotten wonderful responses to the quilts I've made using this technique.

When the book is used in conjuction with a class it is a wonderful teaching tool. The author's visual examples help you in making the best selection of fabric for any of the projects listed in the book. Learning this new technique will open your eyes to the large scale prints in quilt shops that you might otherwise have passed over.
I *LOVE* this book!.......2007-06-01
I am so glad I found this book. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys quilting. The quilts are exhilarating to make-- each block is different than the last, and taking the blocks to the "design wall," as the author calls it, is an amazing process: There are so many ways to put things together, and so many ways to use color with this technique.
While the quilts look complicated, they are actually pretty simple to put together.The seams are all straight seams, and the author's directions are easy to follow.
The only thing I would mention that the author didn't, is not to use hand-dyed batiks with these projects. While they seem like a perfect fit, the patterns are not exact enough to make the kaleidoscope-like blocks work.
The next two quilts will be for my kids, and I can't wait to take them to the design wall. The fabric will be the same for both quilts, but we'll end up with two very different pieces of art for my children. I am so excited that I can involve my family in my hobby.

I have to say I am not a true believer,in that all the worlds ills can be cured with a look tru a kaleidoscope. I did find the book well done, nice layout,crisp bright pictures. It also started with history, and progressed thru the current crop of people building and experimenting with the scopes. Ms. Baker does a very good job of covering all the aspects of the in's and outs of the different scopes and mirror set ups. Gives the reader looking for only entertainment. Just enough information on any of the chapter subjects to make it clear and then moves on to the next.
The glossary,bibliography and internet sites are a nice touch.
Along with the other appendix's artists list,tips for building your own,source list and the copies of the main two patents.
In all if you have only a passing interest in the what,where and how of kaleidoscopes then this book is for you. If you are more involed then you will want to add it to your collection.

A friend of mine, kaleidoscope artist Roy Cohen-Gilad, received this book from Cozy Baker herself, who complimented him on his artistry and beautiful handmade kaleidoscopes. The images are inspiring, the story touching, and overall this beautiful book provides us with a glimpse of understanding why countless people are thus fascinated with this extraodinary form of art.
Magnificent Heaven for Kaleidoscope Lovers'.......2002-04-10
I have everyone of Cozy Baker's books. Each one is worth at least five stars. I didn't think Cozy could improve on her last book full of the festive colors and imaginations of kaleidoscopes and their makers', but she certainly has. I am a devote lover of kaleidoscopes and have been collecting them since 1982. My collection must be over 300 scopes by now. Everyone of them is completely original, beautiful, and loved by my family and I. I am always looking for more information regarding the artists and "industry" of kaleidoscopes. This book is filled with just that kind of information. I 've been collecting for over 22 years, but found out there is a lot I didn't know about my passion and the creator's that have made a difference in creating it. The one thing I never knew until I read this book was that these exciting, talented artists started out as collectors', just like me. I always assumed it was the artist's talent in either glass, marble, brass, wood, ect. that led them into saying "maybe I should try using my art to make a kaleidoscope". This book has taught me that all these spectacular artists are not only "artists", but "scope lover's as well. This book is a gem and you get to see and learn at the same time. Pure enjoyment! Just the same as when you look at a kaleidoscope. I love this book and it will be added as part of my collection and enjoyed forever! Thank you, Cozy Baker, you are indeed the "First Lady of Kaleidoscopes". All of your hard work and honest love for this craft shows brilliantly in this new book. I would like to see those negative reviews if they were posted. Why did they get removed. It is clear that not everyone agrees with the reviews presented here. I did not find the book as informative as the others here. I found it leaves out a lot of other high-quality and very creative artists. Please return the negative reviews a mentioned in the one review so we can make our own decisions.

Featuring an unusual collection of vintage photographs from the 1850s to the 1920s, Women in Pants documents an almost forgotten revolution in clothing. Defying convention, Victorian dress reformers as well as farmers, laborers, miners, cowgirls, and sportswomen openly wore trousers, while other women disguised themselves in men's attire to get good jobs, go to combat, engage in relationships with other women, or experiment with gender identity.

A fascinating, must-read for all.......2003-11-10
Women in Pants is a wonderfully illustrated book chronicling the almost forgotten history of women who not only had the audacious pluck to dress like men but who demanded the same rights, freedoms and jobs as men during a time when society made sure women had few opportunities outside the home. The book is well written and amply illustrated with many beautiful reproductions of vintage photos showing not only notable 19th-century "bloomerites," cowgirls and cross-dressing actresses, but female farmers, soldiers, miners, lumberjacks and mountain climbers! Not to mention the amusing photos of school girls dressed up in tuxedos and top hats for a school play or to attend an all-girl dance where sometimes a same sex romance blossomed. This amazing book offers compelling proof that there were plenty of 19th-century women who didn't fit the stereotypical image of the wasp-waisted feeble Victorian (still perpetuated by Hollywood), and who instead assumed the symbolic power of men's trousers to lay claim to their own equality and self worth. There's something absolutely brilliant about seeing a group of late 19th-century ladies smiling, even laughing while decked out in men's suits and smoking cigars, acting decidely macho with almost reckless abandon (by Victorian standards at least). The photo illustrations and the text serve as powerful reminders of the many battles women have had to fight in order to gain the freedoms we now have and take for granted. An inspiring, must-read for all .
A real eye-opener.......2003-05-02
This is an incredibly compelling collection of photographs. It is exactly what it says it is: photographs of women wearing pants, starting from the beginnings of photography in the mid-1800s and ending about a hundred years later.
Intellectually, we all know that people have worn all sorts of clothing at all times in history. But in fact almost every image of women before the 1930s and '40s portrays women in skirts. It's as if women were shaped like bells until then.
You won't realize how deeply ingrained this assumption can be until you look at this collection. It's a real eye-opener.
Many of the pictures are matter-of-fact recordings of women in unusual situations for that time, like women doing tough jobs that demanded trousers. Others show women who would never wish to be caught dead wearing pants in public. Yet there they are, playacting with their sorority sisters, some shamefaced, others defiant, but all are bravely facing the camera.
The collection contains broad range of photographic technologies and a mix of amateur and professional work. This mixture lends an interesting touch of realism to the collection. In a way, this collection suggests a novel way of studying the past: collect the photographs and see what they really show.
Clothes oft proclaim the man/woman??.......2003-04-26
I found this book to be very well concieved. The photos are well reproduced. The text clear and not foreboding or pedantic. The most interesting idea exposed in a factual easy reading, clear style was the concept of the domination of a person's role in a closed society by something so ubiquitous as a garment. This reminds me of the situation faced in some Eastern countries today! I wonder what hidden else in our present time needs change? I recommend this book to all who are interested in fashion history, social history, and the status of a free & open society.
