Book Description
The drama and beauty of historic homes in California are studied and displayed here in a deeply researched text and over 350 stunning color and over 50 black and white photographs. Southern California's Spanish Revival monuments are pictured here-such as Hearst Castle at San Simeon, the Adamson House in Malibu, Casa del Herrero in Montecito. You will enjoy Rancho Revival landmarks like the Lummis House on Pasadena's arroyo, and Will Rogers' ranch near Pacific Palisades. These are all different portrayals of the California Colonial, its romantic past and its manner of settling into California's climate and landscape. Vernacular and religious structures built between 1769 and 1848, during the Spanish Mission and Mexican Rancho eras, gave California its unique character; a look that was subsequently fictionalized in the revival architecture produced since those colonial days. Particularly influential on residential work, the colonial styles have indulged in the rich associations with Spain's culture-employing styles and ornament from the country's provincial Andalusian, Plateresco, Churrigueresco, and Desornamentado styles and its ever-present Mudjar crafts-or burrowed into its rustic pioneer roots and depicted as individual visions of earthy rancho haciendas.

California's special style.......2007-01-29
Informative, needed less description and more diversity of photos. It shows Malibu and north to Hearst Castle but not much of the architectural detail in many of the Los Angeles, Los Feliz, Hancock Park or Santa Monica homes.
A wonderfully-written and visually-stunning reference.......2002-09-14
Dr. McMillian's treatment of a beautiful and significant architectural tradition in this country is quite unique. She has written and assembled an exquisite volume that deftly bridges the gap between a dry technical analysis and a pretty coffee-table effort by offering the reader an excellent textual and visual presentation of the mission and spanish revival styles (and related styles) that emanated in Southern California in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Lesser-recognized sub-genre's like hacienda, rancho and Plateresco are also discussed, and the oftentimes confusing evolution and blending of these various styles is skillfully addressed. Hundreds of color photos beautifully complement the extremely informative historical analysis, providing the reader with a real taste of the various architectural and decorative arts elements that comprise these styles. Dr. McMillian's effort brings appropriate attention to an architectural tradition that defines Southern California more than any other. A more adept and satisfying one-volume treatment of this subject matter would be hard to imagine. Highly recommended.
For a beautiful companion volume that is equally well-written and accompanied by some stunning photography, check out the author's "Casa California" (1996).

Book Description
A celebration of early American house forms, the Colonial Revival emerged in the late 19th century and was quickly embraced by the American public. It has remained the nation's style of choice for well over a hundred years, appearing in banks, post offices, schools, libraries, and a majority of suburban homes. Marked by dignified symmetry, large column-supported porticoes, and Palladian windows, Colonial Revival architecture is found in virtually every city across the United States.
In this beautiful volume, Richard Guy Wilson, the foremost expert on the subject, leads the reader on a tour of 40 of the finest examples of the Colonial Revival, illustrating its evolution, from its earliest sources, as well as its regional variations. Including exquisite, antique-filled houses by many of America's greatest domestic architects, from McKim, Mead & White to Robert A.M. Stern, this landmark survey is filled with 275 gorgeous photographs that capture the elegance of this much-loved style. The only book of its kind, The Colonial Revival House is a must-have for design professionals, architecture enthusiasts, and Americana buffs. AUTHOR BIO: Richard Guy Wilson holds the Commonwealth Professor's Chair in Architectural History at the University of Virginia. He has served as an adviser and commentator for a number of television programs on PBS and A&E, most recently more than 65 segments of America's Castles.

interesting.......2007-03-06
I found this book most interesting, not only from an architectural point of view, but also for historical information
Depends on what you expect.......2005-08-29
This book is a meandering discussion of influences and variations on the theme of colonial revival architecture and includes some tasty pictures. However, it is not a stylistic reference with specific, prescriptive descriptions of what is generally envisioned as colonial revival. If you're hoping for proper paint schemes and/or the millwork detailing and proportions or plans you'll be disappointed. Still, some of the photographs were beauts...
Great Rivival.......2005-05-20
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the photos are sharp and crisp and it is very scholarly. Mr. Wilson traces the Colonial Revival house from its begins until the present. The houses he choses are wonderful, expecially the McFaddin-Ward House in Beaumont, which I consider to be one of the most beautiful homes in the country; he even wisely chose it for the cover. The photos and the text fuse nicely and the book layout in general is very well done. If you have any interest in beautiful houses and well written easy to follow text, then you will be pleased with this book.

Great patterns, very good descriptions.......2007-01-09
This book contains advanced patterns for the Marudai, using 4, 8 and 16 tamas (bobins). Once you understand that the kumihimos in the pictures are described at the end of the book you're good to go. The patterns let you see how the colors will affect the results and plan ahead to get the effect you desire.
One thing I regret though is that the chapter on endings doesn't have enough details and would need more drawings.
Highly recommended for intermediate level. If you are a complete beginner you should buy "The Beginner's Guide to Braiding: The Craft of Kumihimo by Jacqui Carey" first.
Great book for more types of braids........2001-10-17
I wouldn't recommend this book for beginners because it is so full of information and braid patterns, however, once a person has learned how to do the braiding with the beginners book by Jacqui Carey this book is a great in the fact that it does have different patterns that are more intricate. I would recommend this book for people who already know how to do Kumihimo braiding and want to expand their braiding abilities.

Okay photography, but not a 40-year retrospective.......2000-10-01
The photography is decent the majority of the time. There are some really weird photos where you can't see a thing, and there is more than one occasion where there is nudity. I would not call this great photography, and I wish it had been more focused on the couture and not the models.
The title of this book is Yves Saint Laurent: 40 Years of Creation, but the main focus of the book is the designer's work from the 1990s. There is very little from earlier. This was fine with me as I prefer the work from the 90s, but, if you want a true retrospective on ALL his work, this book is not it.
Congratulations for a great retrospective on YSL.......1999-07-23
What a good idea to have shown the relation between this great designer and those great photographers since he was the first couturier that understood the power of photography in fashion. What I liked the most is the mixture between those young artists and their predecessors. I recommend this book to anyone who loves fashion, photography and the way these two interact.
A book for photography fans, not for fans of YSL........1998-10-23
I was very disappointed in this book. I expected a deluxe photographic retrospective on the work of one of the greatest fashion designers of this century. Instead, the focus of the book is on "fashion photography" and not on YSL's work. The photos are "artistic," which means they are often murky, blurry, dark, weird, and even violent (especially two Terry Richardson photos of "dead" models--one made up to look as though she were slashed to death).
This book will not satisy anyone who wants a good look at YSL's output over the past 40 years. If you are a fan of "fashion photography," you might like this book. If you are a fan of YSL, you will not. I wish I hadn't bought it.
Book Description
THE PRINCES IN THE TOWER
The power-hungry former Regents of the three Haldane princes were pleased. They controlled Gwynedd once more, now that Rhys Michael was king--malleable, wine-loving, and soft. Or so they thought...
Unbeknownst to the Regents, Rhys Michael was coming into his birthright. With secret Deryni aid, he struggled to grasp the magic bequeathed to all anointed kings. And when Marek--heir to Gwynedd's last degenerate deposed Deryni despots--marched into Gwynedd at the head of an army, even the Regents had to admit that Rhys Michael must take to the field himself as king to repel the pretender.
Rhys Michael saw his chance at last. He swore that the power of the throne--from now on and for all time to come--was to be held by Gwynedd's rightful king. For this, for his sons, and for his country, the king would risk all...

One of my favorites from this series!.......2004-01-31
"The King's Justice" and "The Bastard Prince" are my two favorites in this series -- fantastic writing; wonderful, well-developed characters; adventure; intrigue; brotherhood; loyality; friendship; sacrifice; and some humor thrown in for good measure. Who could ask for more?
Be Ready for Tears.......2002-12-28
A great book, but a tear jerker. Kartherine Kurtz has always had a knack for making her characters real and loveable, and this novel is no exception. Her character development and description is simply amazing as always.
The story outlines Gwynedd's growing difficulty with their Torenthi neighbor, and the threat that an illigitimate heir to the Torenthi throne poses. The ending is a shocker, especially since Mrs. Kurtz has a goal of always keeping her readers guessing. She has reached her goal yet again. It is my hope that the story will continue even further yet.
The Best of the Best of the Best.......2000-11-03
I have been a devoted fan of this series since my aunt sent me the Bishops heir as a Christams Present when I 13. I opened that book and saw that this was just the latest in a well established series. Well being just a bit Obsessive complusive about reading things inorder I went and bought the entire series leading up to it, well after a few months anyway it takes a while to get up that kinda money when you don't even have a job yet ;>. I have been hooked ever since...In fact the huges lags of time between books in this series are one of the more fustrating things in life. With each book Kurtz proves why it take so long though, and this was the greatest of them all. I was totally Obsessed with this one when a read it a few years back. When I got the end, I just about cried because the book was that good, and the story that moving, and the fact I was going to now have to wait 4 years + most likely to see its like again. Thankfully Terry Goodkind came along and helped me pass the time somewhat. So basically, if you love fantasy and you read Eddings, Goodkind, Jordan, and Martin read this read the whole thing yo will not be dissapointed.
Definitely worth a try.......2000-06-21
Many of Kathryn Kurtz's strengths as a writer shine in this book: realism (hard though it may be for us readers, and properly described as gothic), unabashed romance and violence, and clearly drawn battle lines.
Kurtz does fall into several traps. I do hate to say this book fits the mold--for there are fascinating moments for which I think this book definitely deserves a chance on its own merits--but I probably should. Noble Haldane kings, beautiful ladies in distress, Deryni and humans alike who will do what they have to in order to gain power... The underground Deryni movement seems uninspired in many ways since Camber's death, unable to fight the Regents on any more than a strictly practical level. Maybe that is a reflection of the Deryni presence at that time, a reality that explains a later Camberian Council that suffers from a lack of faith and ideals.
I could wish that young Rhys Micheal were more convincing in some ways, more aware of his unfortunate role in bringing about as well as solving his royal dilemma. Michaela, Rhysel, and Joram show the same lack of development. Kurtz's observations about prejudice and discrimination are obscured at times by her protagonists' disregard for the consequences of their own actions.
There is, however, much to like in this newest addition to the Deryni saga. Queron Kinevan's development is welcome. He comes into his own after all he has passed through. Rhys Micheal is a very engaging character in many ways, and his death, like the deaths of his brother Javan and his namesake Rhys Thuryn, leaves an ache that is part of good storytelling. I liked his solution to the regent problem. Kurtz doesn't pull punches, so you're never sure the bad guys aren't going to win. Many of the deficiencies that may marr Kurtz's characterizations of the good guys are gloriously absent among her villains; the Regents are a fascinating cross section of corrupt humanity. So enjoy this chivalric romance; for all its faults, it's still quite a story.
good continuation of the Deryni Saga.......1998-01-02
This book continues the fine tradition of the Deryni Saga of Katherine Kurtz. Having been hooked on Ms. Kurtz's books for some time, this one was not a disappointment. Although I do not always agree with turns of the plot, Ms. Kurtz always has a surprise waiting for the reader. It is this suspense, and bringing of the characters to life, that makes her books special and The Bastard Prince continues in this tradition. Rhys Michael has been king for eight years, under the tight control of the regents which ruled during his childhood. Faced with a challenge from Miklos, a prince of Torenth, and claimant to his crown, Rhys Michael accepts his challenge. Not only must the young king contend with his rival, but also his domineering regents, and newfound Deryni powers of the Haldane legacy, which must be kept a secret until the time is right. A very good continuation of the Deryni saga. Can't wait for the next one to be published.

Book Description
Bastard!! is a favorite managa series that has been adapted into a Japanese PlayStation game and an anime series. Dark Schneider is an ancient evil wizard sealed within the body of a seemingly normal 14-year-old boy. In this new volume he leaves the besieged kingdom of Metallicana and goes traveling with only Lars the Dragon for company. They soon face attack from the Dark Army of Chaos, sent by Arshes Nei, Dark Schneider's nemesis.
Customer Reviews:
Admirable, but lacks in depth and interest quickly........2004-01-14
Although Kazushi Hagiwara made an admirable attempt with Bastard!!, it lacks the depth and interest of other RPG based manga titles. First, the protagonist, Dark Schneider, has no personality beside the concupiscence to have sex with every woman that comes within a three foot radius of him. Whenever it seems his character is going to develop into a hero, he gropes a woman, thus impairing the development. Secondly, the art looks like it was rushed to meet certain deadlines. Futhermore, the dialogue between the characters is mediocre. However, Bastard!! is innovative in its approach. For instance, the names of the characters, locations and other objects in the manga are named after popular rock n' roll bands. Also, the series offers a bit-I repeat- a bit of stylish battles. But it mostly ranks in terms of fan service (E.G, Yoko, Arshes-Nei, Sheen Ari, Kai Harn, etc.) If you're a manga fan who enjoys plots, great dialogue and superb character development, in my opinion-my opinion, this isn't for you. However, if you want to try something new to get away from the monotony of other RPG based manga, buy it.
Another in the series hits the bookshelves.......2003-05-30
Bastard! is a very interesting series, filled with strange characters. Dark Schneider is one of the most unconventional heroes out there; Tia No Yoko is made of sterner stuff than even D.S; and Princess Sheila doesn't take any crap from anybody. They are all endearing in their own way, and really help to move the story along.
The spells and the countries are named after American rock n' roll bands and some of their songs, which is quite unique and kinda funny.
Definitely one of the more interesting series I own..........2003-05-16
I got the first volume just a week or two ago, and had to have the second volume as soon as possible! This is a wonderful series, and very creative. Especially the use of hard rock band names as spells is inventive.
The characters are well-drawn and even more well-written. It is hard to dislike Dark Schneider, although Lucien is a little to soft and waffly for my tastes. Yoko knows what she wants and (even more importantly) how to keep D.S. in line. Princess Sheila is not one of those cliched "oh please save me! I'm so fragile and delicate!" types, either.
All in all, an excellent book.
The ultimate in RPG and rock and roll parodies!.......2003-05-08
I love this series! The author is very creative--to use rock n' roll band names and song titles as the names in the story is great! The back of the book says that "If this were a movie, you'd have been blasted through the wall just by the music. This is loud, head-banging fun!" Well, I happen to agree!
So, pick up your copy today! I doubt you'll be disappointed!
Impressive.......2003-03-13
It is not hentai, it is not serious, it sure features lots of blood, but its one fun series...I read previously Bastard!! but i needed to actually buy it because it is SO good. The story might look stupid sometimes but it provides some good laughs. If you never enjoyed 'fantasy' , Bastard!! is for you...The ultimate parody of the fantasy themes >_
