This is a beautifully photographed book. Shows many wonderful pieces of vintage bakelite jewelry. I can't fault it except to say, I wish it had even more examples of bakelite to look at.

This was the first book on Bakelite jewelry that I ever bought, and the mouthwatering pictures wheted my appetite to start collecting Bakelite jewelry. However, after this luscious introduction, I was in for a big disappointment out in the real world. Most of the stunning pieces in this book have long since been snapped up by collectors, and in the years since I got this book I have rarely found a piece of Bakelite that appears in it. In terms of seeing some of the best of the best, Davidov shows Bakelite jewelry at it's finest. She also does much to enlighten collectors about the Bakelite jewelry industry. Although there is a rudimentary pricing guide, it is completely out of date and is of little use to today's collector. None the less, Bakelite collectors will enjoy this book. It's not a collector's guide. Instead, this beautiful book is a glorious celebration of top of the line vintage Bakelite jewelry, and a guilty pleasure to just thumb through and savor....

The Bakelite Jewelry Book by Davidov and Dawes was publishedin 1988 and it was the first book I bought when I started collectingBakelite jewelry several years ago. Big and beautiful, with wonderful pictures, this book does a great job of showing the variety and personality of this fun jewelry while also educating the reader about the history of Bakelite. Unfortunately, the price guide in the back is now outdated. This book is a visual feast and even though I now have a shelf full of books on bakelite it is still the first book I grab when I want to check on a piece!

A fun read but Wasserstrom book was more helpful for me.......2000-05-04
Great pictures and pleasant, friendly tone, but no price information and just generally not a good practical reference. This book has more narrative (the story of Bakelite, what the collecting world is like, the author's personal experiences, etc.) -- as opposed to the Wasserstrom book which has more practical how-tos. Grasso's book mentions the famous "Philadelphia bracelet" but then doesn't bother to show you a picture of one! And I think there was little if any mention of Galalith and other Bakelite-type products, and how to tell the difference.
If you only buy one Bakelite jewelry book, this is the one.......1998-11-14
Well written, informative book. Great pictures. Terrific for the beginning collector as well as a seasoned bakelite hunter. Highly recommended. Mr. Grasso has a fun, easy to read style.

This book has more pictures of bakelite in one book than all the books on bakelite that I have ever seen. It is truely a God send for every Bakelite Collector.
A great book for the begining collector.......1998-08-25
The first time I saw this book was on a recent Bakelite hunt in Italy. The wonderful colors and unusual piece on the cover caught my attention right away. The book gives the begining collector the information needed to tell the difference between bakelite and other plastics, by smell, touch and sound. It also gives information other books forget-how to find it, buy it, and then take care of it once it's yours. Tony Grasso makes bakelite collecting a fun and enjoyable hobbie for all ages. I have bought a second copy of this book for my teenage daughter who has now caught the "Bakelite Bug". If I had seen this book on Amazon before going to Europe, I would have not purchased the book in Italy and carried it half way around the world!

A Great Wish Book.......2000-04-09
This is a beautiful book! Vibrant color photos of some of the most classic bakelite jewelry ever made. Also some great, unusual things such as school pencils and charms that are rarely seen. Unfortunately, most of us who buy books like these are not only interested in the photos and descriptions but are very much interested in the price/value guides. The value guide in this book is way too non-specific. It gives price ranges for entire pages (or double spread of pages) without giving estimates for individual items or even groups of items. An example: pages 102 and 103, $600 to $1100. Not the bangles on page 102 and the pins on page 102 - just PAGE 102. For someone looking for a beautiful bakelite jewelry "wishbook", this is it! However, if you're looking for an updated book with a usuable price guide this book falls short.

Beautimous Bakelite, but ..........2004-01-29
This coffeetable collectable book about Bakelite and the Style of its time is beautiful and informative. But this memoir of the "miracle material" would have been even better in gloss, as with the brilliant patina of its subject, rather than matte.
The reader is often jarred with syntactical reminders that the book was printed in China: "No longer in demand for consumer goods, Bakelite returned mercurial career ending as it had begun" [sic.] Say what?
And then there is the horror: a Texas Chainsaw Massacre-type approach to test for true Bakelite. The author advises that a good way to tell if a piece is really Bakelite is to take a hacksaw or sandpaper to it! Please ignore this part of the book. Don't ruin the Bakelite! They don't make it any more! There are better Bakelite barometers!
Aside from these admonitions, this is a big, broad, beautiful buffet, an overview and history of bygone eras' sumptuous stuff and practical products.

Even if you are not the slightest bit interested in Bakelite plastic jewelry, you will enjoy this book. It introduces Ron and Ester Shultz, who are a husband and wife who are artists and craftspeople who make modern jewelry from recycled Bakelite plastic. Their story alone is inspiring, but wait until you see the jewelry- it's whimiscal, colorful, and fun to look at. Along with careful examinations of the Shultz's various techniques, this book is filled with beautiful full color photos of their jewelry. The author, Karima Parry, has already written two books on Bakelite jewelry which are collector 'must haves': "Bakelite Bangles Price and Identification Guide", and "Bakelite Pins". In those books, she not only shows plenty of Bakelite jewelry, but she also demonstrates a great deal of knowledge about her subject, and a mission to teach the reader/collector what she knows. "Shultz Bakelite Jewelry" is given the same scholarly treatment that Parry has taken with vintage Bakelite jewelry in her other books. She guides the reader through the techniques and decorative patterns that are used by the Shultzs, and introduces a workable terminology to describe them. Unlike many of the other books on Bakelite jewelry, Parry discusses the pieces in detail and helps the reader to understand why some pieces are considered more collectible, or better examples of a technique than others. Every piece is shown in full color, and includes it's measurements and a realistic price range. This book paves the way for collectors to collect Shultz Bakelite jewelry with knowledge and confidence. I have browsed and read many Protools books, and this is the only one I have found which shows actual tips for the intermediate to advanced user. I hope he writes more. I will buy them.

I've read any PT book I can get my hands on, worked on hundreds if not thousands of Pro Tools sessions and this is by far the best book there is out there.
1. Easy to read, logical flow, makes sense, real world tips and funny. This is the only book on PT that I've found that gives the reader information like this:
"Look this is how it is, I'm not going to give you every shortcut and detail that Pro Tools can and will do (that's what the reference guide is for) but what I will do is - Explain all the necessary information in a easy to understand and real world application. I will explain WHY you want to use Beat Detective and how to use it..." you get the drift
Without knowing, I went to take a class to get Pro Tools certified at the Bay Area Video Coalition in SF. When the instructor (Scott) had this book laying around I mentioned that I read it and loved it. He responded with "Oh yea?! I wrote it, and thanks for the compliment"
True story. Crazy though. He is a very nice guy and deserves more recognition for his work.
