Book Description

One of our most important requirements as humans is the dwelling. Designing a home is thus one of the most important challenges architecture has to deal with. On the one hand, architects must create homes that guarantee with the highest of quality the wellbeing and comfort of their inhabitants. On the other hand, architects must learn how to manage a client's limited budget by reducing costs without affecting the quality of the final result.

Affordable Home Design showcases a wide array of solutions to this same architectural challenge of good design and structure on a budget. The projects featured include extensions of houses and apartments already in existence, ecological housing design, sustainable and structurally cost-effective homes, and new buildings in strictly coded conservation zones. Through more than 250 full-color photographs, this essential book reveals how today's architects are able to adapt to the necessities of a more affordable budget when approaching the always exciting necessity of designing a home.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Shallow coverage.......2006-01-21

This book says almost nothing about affordable home design. In fact, it says almost nothing at all. Most of the book is dedicated to large photos, some of which are grainy in quality. The written descriptions of the houses include, at most, a sentence or two about some "affordable" feature, while most of the noteworthy features of the houses look quite expensive. It's as if the publisher decided to make another book about mostly modern houses, then put the word "affordable" in the title just to sell more books. If you want a book on this subject, buy another one instead.

5 out of 5 stars Projects which focus on budget-saving ideas.......2005-05-12

Affordable Home Design; Innovations And Renovations is packed with solutions to appeal to designers on a budget who want to keep quality without high expense. Here are projects which focus on budget-saving ideas and sustainable designs, covering both new construction and renovation projects from single family homes to apartments. Energy saving ideas are a big part of Affordable Home Design, with discussions revolving around originally commissioned idea versus finished project considerations. Martha Torres received a degree in architecture in Venezuela and has coordinated a number of design projects: her expertise lends to a fine set of ideas.

I purchasd this book on the recommendation of someone who is a very experienced botanical illustrator. It has been very informative and goes into all aspects of this wonderful art. I will continue to use this book for reference while practising my plant illustration. I have not been disappointed in this book but rather amazed how much help it has been to me!

5 out of 5 stars all you ever needed to know!.......2002-09-26

This book really has all you ever needed to know about botanical illustration - history, mediums, styles, scientific considerations, and more. A must for anyone going into this field.

4 out of 5 stars For those with some experience, Technical Drawing.......2000-05-02

This book focuses on technical drawing as the basis of botanical illustration. It brings together an understanding of plant structure with drawing technique as the keys to success.

Selecting, preserving and examining plants is discussed. A variety of plant structures are shown in detail with the process of building up the drawing.

Pencil, ink and scratchboard are the main media covered. The addition of color is presented in watercolors and acrylics. There are several beautiful color plates, some historical and some by the author.

This is a book best suited to an artist with some experience. The wealth of technical information will provide the artist with a greater understanding of and proficiency in botanical work.

        Book Description

Tina Modotti and Edward Weston travelled to Mexico in 1923 at the start of an extraordinary period of artistic creativity that became known as the Mexican Renaissance. Although often perceived as being principally embodied by the politically motivated work of Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros and JosŽ Clemente Orozco, the Mexican Renaissance was shaped by the contribution of dozens of artists, both Mexicans and expatriates, and gave rise to an exceptionally hospitable environment for innovative art-making. The work Modotti and Weston made in the 1920s marks the beginning of a Modernist photographic aesthetic that left an indelible mark on the history of photography in Mexico. Each contributed to this history individually: Modotti is known for beautiful still-lifes that gave way to Modernist images of Mexican workers and poetic revolutionary icons. Weston's Pictorialist-influenced imagery was abandoned in favour of sharp, clear, 'straight' photographs and an engagement with form. Also included in this exquisitely produced book is a selection of images by two Mexican photographers, Manuel çlvarez Bravo and Mariana Yampolsky, whose work was influenced by these two foreigners.

In 1963, before the law and his drug habit brought the curtain down on the comedian, Hugh Hefner asked then-superstar Lenny Bruce to write his autobiography. Lenny hired writer Paul Krassner to help him edit the book, which appeared in Playboy over the next two years. Though it's uneven, and somewhat dated, How to Talk Dirty and Influence People deserves a look, if only to balance the movie Lenny, which many of the comedian's friends say missed the man entirely. The book is, simply, Lenny Bruce riffing on his life--from a drab childhood in Brooklyn, to stints in the navy and merchant marine, and finally to the nightclub circuit and eventual stardom. Of course, the veracity of any single anecdote is highly questionable, but How to Talk Dirty and Influence People rises above that, revealed as a fascinating expression of how this comedy icon wanted to be seen. Namely, as a rough-and-tumble kid from the streets, as a hustler and ladies' man, and, finally, as a fearless detonator of society's hypocrisy. (Notice that addict and dissolute don't make the list.)

In the movies ... Everett Sloane was a tycoon. He would get his gun off disillusioning Joel McCrea, who wanted to publish a newspaper that would make a statement, and telling him: "M'boy, you'll see when you get old that it's all a game." And I used to think, "No, it's not that way, this cynical old bastard is bullshitting, there are the Good Guys and the Bad Guys, the liars and the truth-tellers."

But Everett Sloane was right. There is only what is. The what-should-be never did exist, but people keep trying to live up to it. There is only what is.

How to Talk Dirty and Influence People doesn't catch Bruce's charisma and vaguely sinister electricity--no book could--but it is an interesting, lively read. Bruce was one of the first performers to usher in the new, more honest, more permissive, and more indulgent brand of American art. For anyone who wants to understand our comedy and culture, How to Talk Dirty and Influence People is well worth reading. --Michael Gerber

4 out of 5 stars Lenny Bruce is Not Afraid.......2007-01-05

I found this book to be thoroughly enjoyable. Lenny Bruce is an interesting guy and I think it's very insightful just of life and society in general and of all their inconsistencies. Though today, I'm sure, is much different than Lenny's era, most of what he has to say still applies. He can be really funny at times, but I'd say its a darker humor. I remember thinking it dragged just a bit when he gets deep into his legal battle near the end of the book but overall it kept me entertained.

4 out of 5 stars "I am influenced by every second of my waking hour.".......2006-06-03

You could be forgiven for thinking that this book is by Eric Bogosian. Although generally okay, the Fireside edition spends more time talking about Bogosian on the front cover than it does talking about Bruce himself.

Too bad. But luckily for the reader, this book is pure Lenny.

More readable than the transcripts of his performance (since he intended this to be read)-- How To Talk Dirty and Influence People is part autiobiography and part diatribe. Bruce explains, jokes, cajoles and convinces as he writes. This is the story of his life from his birth until 1963 when it was written.

Lenny Bruce is a very important figure in the histories of performance and free expression. This book is a little bit sketchy to be a final remembrance, but is still worth the time and effort that it takes to read. In particular, the beginning sections of the book are magical-- funny, wry and moral. It loses the thread a little bit towards the end, as Bruce is more and more obsessed with the legal wars that he was then fighting on every front. Certainly understandable, but the latter chapters are much less open for the reader and seem to have been written in a much bigger hurry than the rest of the book.

If you are interested in Bruce, this book is a must-read. The Fireside edition is bound with an introduction by the aforementioned Bogosian and with a preface by Kenneth Tynan.

5 out of 5 stars you don't even have to know who he is.......2004-08-16

You don't have to be a fan of Lenny Bruce to love this book, you don't have to really know who he is (I really only know him from a few recordings and by reputation). This book is funny. This book is still a valuable piece of social satire and criticism. This book is an interesting story. This book is a piece of history. This book is great. This book should be read.

        5 out of 5 stars A poet posing as a comedian.......2004-07-27

Lenny Bruce may have been the greatest poet of mid-Twentieth Century America, 'though he never wrote a poem, because he did what poets ought to do--make you see, make you feel, make you realize that "the great" did things that they didn't want you to know about. He alienated President Kennedy so much that J. Edgar Hoover was unleashed to pressure local police to bird dog Bruce's nightclub act. The cops would lurk in the back, wait till Bruce said something vulgar, then bust him for obscenity. In court, the fuzz would do Bruce's act so badly that Bruce was convicted for their lack. He beat the rap, at the U. S. Supreme Court, but it took a lot out of his native optimism. He shot up on heroin till he overdosed--assuming it WAS suicide. Remember Marilyn Monroe? What's easier than knocking off a junkie with an overdose? With Oscar Levant and Alexander King, Bruce is one of the three great wits of America at mid-century. Worth your time, because he repays you with insight wrapped in laughter.

5 out of 5 stars Very good read.......2004-07-25

Lenny Bruce was pretty rare in that he always called it how he saw it. No, I don't agree with absolutely everything he says. (After all, no two people can concur on every possible subject) But, he always told the truth as he believed it to be without fear of repurcussion. Bruce did more for the first ammendment than anyone else in the 20th century and strongly influenced later comics such as Richard Pryror, George Carlin, and Bill Hicks.

How To Talk Dirty and Influence People is his autobiography. It reveals how ahead of his time, moral, courageous, humanly flawed, smart, and most of all how funny Lenny Bruce was. The majority of his assaults on how farcial organized religion and American justice can be still hit the mark even after more than forty years of elapsed time. This is counterbalenced by moving stories of his youth, time in the Navy during World War II, his ultimately failed marriage, and other aspects of his personal life. I won't go into too much detail as to ruin the book for others.

Bruce writes in a very concise manner, but not in a way that leaves the material short on content. You can probably finish this book in a day or two, but there's enough food for thought in How To Talk Dirty And Influence People to last for ages.

          Book Description

We live in a world in which almost every public image--every interaction--carries an element of sexual desire.  And yet it is nearly impossible for us to talk openly and honestly about sex.  Talk Dirty to Me is author Sallie Tisdale's frank, funny, and provocative invitation to the conversation we've been waiting for--but have been too afraid to start.

Sallie Tisdale shuns the dry style of academics and takes us on a journey through gender and desire, romance and pornography, prostitution and morality, fantasies and orgasm.  She guides us through her field research of peep shows, XXX stores, and even the pornography collection of the British Library. Interweaving her own personal feelings, experiences, and revelations, she presents a brilliant, fascinating, and wholly original portrait of sex and sexuality in America, while encouraging us to explore and create our own "intimate philosophies."

3 out of 5 stars Don't let the title deceive you.......2006-04-10

This book should be categorized with sexual identity and sexual politics not sexual intimacy or "how to excite and trill your partner". I think the fact that it is paired with "The Fine Art of Erotic Talk" is really quite ridicules these two books are on opposite sides of the spectrum--and yes I bought them both.

Tisdale does make some good observations, but her points are not well organized one chapter bleeds into another with out clear definition or resolve.

I agree with many of the positions taken by Tisdale; however few were ground breaking or original. This may be a good general introduction to sexual politics, but it left this reader wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars Frank and Insightful; A Rare Mix.......2002-11-22

I read this book in a weekend, and I'm a slow reader. If I had to sum up this book in one word, it would be "deprogramming". It teaches the reader to suspend his or her presuppositions and approach sex from a fresh standpoint. She breaks stride with the traditional feminist camp in her discussion of pornography and prostitution by questioning the ideas that many feminists (and I tend to count myself as one) take for granted. She discusses our "sex-drenched, sex-phobic" culture and critiques many of the philosophical ideas that underlie many common views. Highlights include her discussion of the Adam and Eve myth, Augustinian Christianity, sexual taboos, homosexuality, and transgender issues. At one point, she comments that most authors who write about sex do so in a way that seems as if they're afraid that anyone who reads their work will be afraid that they are actually turned on by the subject. Tisdale is not one of these authors. Her language is frank and honest but not gratuitously shocking. I teach a college philosophy course and we will soon be spending two weeks on this book. My students are eagerly awating those lessons. The current lack of interest that academic philosophers have in these issues is unfortunate. We talk about sex all the time and it is such a big part of our lives, yet so many think that the ideas that we approach our sexuality with are not worthy topics for rigorous examination and discussion. We need more writers like Tisdale who are willing to discuss these issues in an honest and intelligent way. Buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars More philosophical than sexual.......1999-12-06

Tisdale's book is like a long essay by a compassionate, learned friend. She poses more questions than answers, giving us her opinions and insights without forcing conclusions. Tisdale allows us to reach our own conclusions about sexuality, but opens many doors on the journey. It's a small but powerful and thought-provoking book.

I read this a few years ago when I first began to do male nude photography as a photo student. I needed to come to grips with my own and other's resistance to the male nude form. I found the insights in "Talk Dirty" to be especially relevant and valuable.

5 out of 5 stars Debunking Family Values AND Political Correctness.......1998-11-24

This is a brave writer and an original thinker. Pretty soon into reading this well-conceived excursion across America's bizarre sexual landscape, I began to think about the social aspects of sexuality in a different way. It amazing that our society condems depictions of sex for its own sake--as opposed to its use as a vehicle for advertising. Congress is all a-flutter about sex on the internet--but yawns at graphic violence on prime time TV. Just about every adult experiences sex fairly often. Just about no adult experiences lethal combat--often or ever. But which activity is okay as a subject of fiction, family television, classroom discussion?

The flip side is that the feminist condemnation of pornography--Tisdale insists on calling it thus rather than the polite "eroticism" --can be seen as just as repressive as the attacks from the right.

I didn't always agree with Ms Tisdale, but she was always interesting. I didn't really change my own sexuality as a result, but I feel more comfortable as a result of this "conversation." That's a strong recommendation for any book.

5 out of 5 stars from pansies and posey to the down and dirty.......1998-07-31

Forget those awful high school sex ed filmstrips - Talk needs to be on the reading list. Tisdale broaches delicate subjects with wit and empathy, leaving no room for ignorance. How many of us have stumbled through our inner sexual landscape without Tisdale's various validations of our highly individual "naughty-mustn't-touch" urges? How many of us are tormented by nights restless wishes, assuming no hope of release from our dark dreams?. I wish Mom could have handed me both The Joy of Sex and Talk Dirty to Me when we had our talk.

          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.......2004-01-22

If anyone could possibly appreciate this book, it would be me. I too, am a phone sex operator just like the author of this book (except I really AM a woman and don't just pose as one).

I didn't realize this book would be written from a man's perspective when it was purchased for me, but I opened the book with an open mind. The author talks about his occupation as a male phone sex operator (well he actually played two people - a male and a shemale) I can relate to many points made in this book, yes men really say those ridiculous lines (the author made an actual list of those lines - and I can raise my hand and vouch for him). Yes, we have to be ready for every single line thrown at us. He gets into some of the redundancy we hear, the constant "yes I am always horny" lines - which made me laugh because there is no way in the world that people are horny 24 hours a day/7 days a week, yet people choose to believe it.

I think this book was heart felt and a very honest, realistic view from his perspective and a very enjoyable read. I would like to say though - one thing I didn't like was that he was very cynical about many points that I did not agree with. He laughed at these callers behind their backs (ok sometimes I do, depending on the content) but... he made a habit of doing this to even average nice callers who had off-the-wall fetishes. I think his unhappiness in his job showed as he wrote the book. He even admitted that he would write how he felt at the end of the call and actually type his comments into the book, which shows... because he uses a lot of sarcasm.

This book is not an upbeat one. He is not excited about phone sex. Most of the time he is just waiting for the call to end so he can hang up the phone. Although his view on the industry does not necessarily reflect mine, I at least admire his honesty. I am sad to hear this author has passed away, I read the introduction about his tragic death.

I recommend this book... not really sure who to recommend it to. Callers may not want to read it, because it may make them never want to call phone sex again. And fellow phone sex operators may not want to read it because it's almost a slightly depressing book. But I DO recommend it because - it is funny, it's realistic, it adds humor in the most off-the-wall topics... and simply because I never read a version of phone sex from the male's perspective.

          I give it five stars.

3 out of 5 stars The industry would collapse if all men read this book.......1998-12-10

Hey fellas, how would you feel if you knew that hot phone-sex operator you wasted $40 on last night was really a GUY? This memoir of life in the highly profitable adult entertainment industry can be funny, but overall it is very disturbing to read about all the horrible things callers make the "girls" say and do. Lots of mysogyny, horrible cursing, sadistic and pedophilic fantasies...but I guess it's better these losers pay some girl (or guy) to take their abuse over the phone than inflict it upon their loved ones or strangers. A very surreal read, not for the faint of heart.

This witty autobiography makes for an amusing read. Comedian Lenny Bruce (1925-1966) was irreverent, funny, creative and daring - loved by many, but feared by others. In this revealing book he describes his upbringing, his struggles as a rising comic, and his near-obsessive love for his wife Honey. There's also an amusing yet serious look at his legal troubles on charges of obscenity - Bruce dared to use dirty words in front of audiences that paid to hear him. By today's standards Bruce probably wouldn't raise many eyebrows, but in the early 1960's he was highly controversial. Sadly, Bruce was also a troubled by depression and drug abuse. This book is an amusing and revealing look at a comic rebel.

HOW TO TALK DIRTY AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE was the first book I originally read in paperback and liked so well I bought a hardbound copy for my permanent library.

To understand the friction--the accumulated sand and dirt in the gears of our forefathers' patriot dream of the new United States of America, "Land of The Free and Home of The Brave"--I recommend "How to" for every thoughtful American's permanent library.

Let us booklovers pray that Lenny Bruce will, like an intangible Ben Franklin, "appear again in a new edition"....

PS: If you read "How to" and would like to share thinking on how to clean out some of the dirt and sand in America's social structures, please check The Center for The Study of Social Structures' site at..

How to Talk Dirty and Influence People is an accurate simulation of a Lenny Bruce show. Both enlightening and entertaining, I damn-near have the entire text highlighted. Pick up a copy and learn from the greatest satirist/social critic/comedian of our time.
