You'll need this if you're building a Spanish home !.......2007-01-11
If you are building a Spanish home and we are, then this book will provide you with a wealth of ideas about what to do beyond the 'box of the casa.' Filled with brilliant photographs of terraces, swimming pools, fountains, outdoor rooms, columns, entrances, furnishings, use of paint, etc. you will refer to this book over and over again as you design and continue to decorate your dream home.
Beautiful color photos!.......2007-01-05
The photography is excellent and the ideas abound. It is a book that's fun to thumb through and colorful. I enjoyed it! It's sister publication is just as good.
Must Buy Mexican Design Book.......2006-08-06
I have bought more than a Dozen Mexican Design Books already. And none can compare to the Traditional Mexican Style Exteriors and its Companion Book Mexican Style Interiors by Donna McMenamin.
It is a wonderful book! You will not need any other book if you are planning on redecorationg your house. But, even if you will not decorate your house, this Book(s) are a worthy read. The Pictures are wonderful. Giving detail to what is really Mexican.
Beautiful and Inspirational.......2006-07-29
Every time I re-do a room or make a home decor purchase these days, I'm looking for things to make my house look more Mexican. This book, and its companion volume "Traditional Mexican Style Interiors" are wonderful reference books for anyone looking to copy that style.
If you're just a fan of Mexican style, or have been to Mexico and want to have a way to go back without leaving your easy chair, this book is fun to read and magnificent to look at. Although it emphasizes exteriors (facades, architecture, etc.) there are photos of gardens, courtyards, and plenty of other spaces that you could create on your own property, even on a very modest budget, and without knocking the house down and starting over.
Mexan Exteriors.......2005-09-12
Fantastic book for anyone who wants to explore the Spanish Revival look. The book contains great pictures that gives the viewer a true sense of the Mexican-Spanish influence on American architechture.
I used to book to design my own backyard. Explaining the style I was looking for to landscape designers would have been nearly impossible without this book. Now, that my landscaping is done, the book compliments my coffee table nicely and is often times a great conversation piece. A must for anyone who loves Spanish Revival.

Book Description
Finding Art's Place showcases three artistic/educational experiments located outside of school settings. Author Nicholas Paley presents the texts, voices, and teaching and learning practices of Tim Rollins + K.O.S. (Kids of Survival) and their artistic/literary workshop for urban youth in New York's South Bronx; the video work of Sadie Benning, the adolescent filmmaker who has won critical acclaim for her sensitive self-explorations of her lesbian sexuality; and the photographic efforts of Jim Hubbard, who shares his expertise with homeless and urban children in Washington, D.C., through his organization, The Shooting Back Education and Media Center.
Finding Art's Place explores the many ways education occurs in each of the these experiments. Allowing the children and young adults, their mentors, and their work to speak for themselves about their educational experiences, Paley brings forward multiple standpoints on educational methodologies and materials, identity, literacy, and the configurations of art in the lives of urban youth. Central to all three experiments is the construction of representations and self-representations of children and young adults struggling with the realities of cultural production in "asymmetrical" educational spaces in order to flourish academically, artistically, and psychically.
Mindful to avoid consolidating the status of the projects within any single language or theoretical system,
Finding Art's Place experiments with discursive and non-discursive modes of address that slant away from official narratives of educational power. The volume's juxtaposition of voices, analyses, interviews, and visual/textual documentation is produced to reflect the complex, differential process of imaginative and cultural production and to portray students as active agents in their own education.
The introduction and concluding chapters link the projects to larger educational issues of power, pedagogy, and themeaning of literacy in American society. Venturing across critical boundaries and disciplined systems of educational discourse,
Finding Art's Place offers a deeply optimistic portrait of learning grounded in artistic practices and the multiple circumstances in which it can take place.

If you have been using After Effects for years, have just started using it, or are considering using it, get this book. Written by Trish and Chris Meyer, perhaps best known for their monthly motion-graphics column in DV Magazine, Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects is the definitive book on using this powerful tool.
Every page is in color and is filled with tips, notes, warnings, and screenshots. The format is clearly not boilerplate--there is no wasted space, yet the book manages to strike a balance between being information-packed, easy-to-read, and enjoyable to look at. The only downside of this book is that it doesn't have a spiral or lie-flat binding.
Nine sections break down the features of After Effects in a logical manner, starting with basic animation and key framing, and on to layers, masks, mattes, effects, and rendering. Part 6's four chapters explain using After Effects with its sister applications, Photoshop and Illustrator, and Part 7 covers audio--an important but rarely discussed aspect of any presentation. Part 9 features a wide array of technical discussions, including field rendering and interlacing, 3:2 pull-down, working at film-resolution and widescreen sizes, prerendering, and using proxy files.
The CD-ROM gives 22 tutorials and includes project files. These lessons range from the basic ("Getting Animated" for After Effects beginners) to what falls into the "Oh, wow, I would never have thought of that!" category (a Matrix title-sequence look-alike). The CD-ROM also includes all the projects and source files cited in each chapter, plus tech tips covering 12 difficult and common technical areas--including alpha channels, the aspect ratio, and the After Effects rendering pipeline.
An artisan at the top of his or her craft often takes on the task of teaching others. Those working in the fields of animation, effects, motion graphics, and digital media are lucky that authors Trish and Chris Meyer are living by this rule. --Mike Caputo

Questions Answered.......2004-12-15
Excellent book. I can't put it down. It's giving the answers to my questions. The AE manual is dry with short descriptions. AE CIB is OK for teaching where to click etc. This book tells the whys, hows, etc. Detailed but easy to read.
Too Difficult For Beginner.......2004-08-26
Well, I bought this book after the glowing reviews. But in all frankness, I found the beginning chapters and tutorial to be very difficult to follow. The authors do write that in this book, you are immediately thrown into the AE process...they weren't kidding.
Rather than start a newbie off with a simple composition, they throw a very complicated at you from the get go. I'm pushing buttons and following instructions the best I can, but for the life of me, I don't understand the process. It would have been much better for them to start off with an explanation of all the buttons, switches, boxes, icons, commands, etc.
So, if you're new to AE, I'd steer clear of this one. I've already been through the first tutorial twice, and it still doesn't come any easier. Yes, I do realize that AE is complicated software, but there's GOT to be a better way to present the material!
I am probably destined for an actual classroom training course just to first get over the hump....and I'm a 25 year veteran of film/video production. Photoshop and Illustrator...no sweat.
Other than that, the book looks like it has a lot of good stuff in it...but it will collect dust on my shelf.

If your serious about making a living using Ae.......2002-10-04
I Have the videos ...I have the books, they are all collecting dust except for this one. Trish and Chris Meyer are the Ae guru's. I have been using Ae for about 2 yr.s and I have dramatically increased my income because of this book. Now all the :30 and 1:00 commercials I do are done in After Effects. I strongly recommend this book for an intermediate to experienced editor wanting to break into motion graphics and compositing. This book is guaranteed to raise your IQ (and could quite possibly help in raising your income).
A to Y.......2002-06-07
I was a beginner and this was all I ever used to learn AE. I left out the Z b/c obviously they must have left out a technique or two, but otherwise this is all you need to get up and running. Forget the videos others offer, they're a waste of time and money. There's plenty of online support and training offered from various user groups, some with FREE video clips. LES MEYERS get an A+++++ from this DV Editor.
Essential for any after effects user.......2002-05-01
I've been a long time fan of the Meyers' column on DV magazine, so when I heard they were publishing a book I knew it would be great. I think that this book and it's companion After Effects in Production should be in every motion graphics artists personal library. The tutorials are beautifully explained and illustrated. Even advanced users learn new ways of doing things. For what I've seen beginers can use it as a text book and follow it sequentially, for advanced users it's a great reference book that completly substitutes the original manuals.

Customer Reviews:
Simply simplistic!.......2007-08-25
There are a billion ways you can go when you start up After Effects. It's wonderful to know that once I generate the ideas of what I want to do but don't know how to pull them off, all I have to do is find the tutorial for it and "Genius!" I've learned them and am able to modify them in any direction I want to go. Trish and Chris Meyer have a good handle on teaching, sometimes complex VFX maneuvers, in such easy to follow and understand terms. I highly recommend any of their books on this subject.
Semi-Advanced.......2007-01-29
This is another excellent After Effects guide that deserves to be in the library of any AE professional. However I was a little dissapointed with the contents. Being titled: Advanced Techniques, I expected to learn a lot of new techniques, but found most of the content was already well known by myself. I also found quite a lot of content was repeated in the other two After Effects books by the Meyers.
This is still an excellent book to have as a reference, and there are some great topics covered. It's very well written like the other books, and I don't regret the purchase at all. My complaints are probably mostly due to the fact I have learnt quite a bit since finishing the first book, for people who have finished the first book and want to learn more this would be perfect. But advanced users should perhaps look at After Effects 7 Studio Techniques which has more advanced content.
Be Warned, this book is for version 5.5.......2005-12-25
This book only to find out it's for version 5.5... Not a cheap book, as I already have purchased it.
Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects, Vol. 2: Advanced Techniques (3rd Edition, Version 6.5) .......2005-09-15
If you are a novice make sure you get Vol. 1 it is really great. I bought volume two because I learned so much from volume one and what a great AE reference book to have sitting on you shelf. Whenever I have a question the book has an example that I can apply to my project.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-07-19
This book was very helpful in teaching me how to use and understand After Effects. I'd recommend this book to any beginner wanting to learn AE. It is easy to follow and comes with a great CD (very beneficial).
Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects, Vol. 1: The Essentials.......2007-05-06
If you are new to After Effects and Motion Graphics, or want to learn from Chris and Trish about the new features in Adobe's CS3 release, I recommend the Brand New:
After Effects Apprentice (DV Expert Series) (DV Expert Series) (Paperback)
by Chris & Trish Meyer
which is the only one of their books to cover After Effects 7, I'm pretty sure. Their next books will cover the new CS3 release.
Normally they write the new version's manual (yes, you can consider their books to be the missing user manual for Adobe After Effects) when the 'X.5' version comes out. There was no 7,5 version of after effects, so except for After Effects Apprentice, there is no manual for AAE 7.
Plus the book covers the new release of After Effects, the CS3 release.
AND this is a GREAT introduction to motion graphics in general, and to working with files in After Effects:
[...]
and when you finish that, you will certainly want:
Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects, Vol. 1: Advanced Techniques (4th edition, not yet published) by Trish and Chris Meyer
and
Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects, Vol. 2: The Essentials (4th edition, not yet published) by Trish and Chris Meyer
which should both be available very soon. I don't actually recommend getting the 6.5 version unless you are not going to upgrade to AAE 7 or AAE CS3. With the ton of new features (like Photoshop can handle video now!) in Adobe CS3, I DO recommend getting the CS3 version of every Adobe product that you use, and if you use more than just a few, you should get the whole suite, it will be cheaper.
Amazon dropped the ball.......2007-03-08
I had to cancel my order of this book three weeks into waiting, because for some unknown reason after the estimated 3-5 week shipping time, there was yet another delay. So I had to buy this book at twice the cost at my corrupt/evil University store.
The book itself is pretty good. I have only examined it a few times. However, some of the explanations can be confusing, it seems you have to read the entire thing to be sure to understand it, you cant pick and choose which things you want to learn from it.
Amazing book!!!.......2007-02-11
From my side i just wanna say "Thank you" to Trish Meyer and Chris Meyer for taking there time and writing this book - i think it's really amazing.
That brings you simply to the world of After Effects and helps you without any trouble to start working with his amazing program.
You'll find answer to many questions you answered yourself about this program and also answers to question that you yet didn't asked but soon will.
That book is simply amazing and brilliant. Recommended for people who already know After Effects or just started to work with this Adobe program. And price is very fair - you'll spend your money for really great book that you'll wanna to save in your collection!!!!!
Buy this first........2007-01-29
This was the first book I ever bought on After Effects, and I made the right choice. I would highly reccomend this as a first purchase for anyone starting out in After Effects. For those more experienced users, you might not learn many new tricks, but I would still consider it a must-have reference book to have in your library. I now use this book as a basis for training others in AE. The companion books written by the Meyers are also essential, and will advance your skills once you have worked your way through this book.

Book Description
Cal McDonald has a special talent for spotting and seeking out the strange beings walk among us. They live as postal workers and taxi drivers, lurking in the sewers and roaming the streets ever awake and always on the hunt. Cal has made a career helping and hunting the dark creatures. Among the docile ghouls of the city he is a friend. But to most, those who prey on innocent human lives, Cal is a sworn enemy. Now Cal finds himself in the middle of the strangest adventure of his life. People are dropping dead all over Washington DC and the cause is a mystery. The bodies are unmarked, yet their brains are simply gone. Cal will have to use all of his resources and dig deep into his past to unravel the truth, which is more terrible and absurd than he could have ever expected.
Customer Reviews:
Super Reader.......2007-08-30
Cal gets called in to help, when, for the second time, dead bodies are found with the brain completely missing, taken out clean.
To him, this is very familiar. So he and Mo'lock have to investigate, and he has to fortify himself with enough substance abuse to prevent his own brain from being removed.
Best damn monster hunter on the map.......2007-03-09
I first read "Savage Membrane," back when it first came out, i'am not sure wether or not i was a sophmore or junior in high-school; regardless thats neither here nor there. Savage Membrane captivated me from the minute I started reading and even afterwards. Steve Niles has managed to create the horror genre's own Indiana Jones, Cal Mcodnald is probably my favorite character to come out in anything be it comics or books in a long time. So without giving anything away this book picks up from the start and never lets down, the only let down was finishing it and putting it on the shelf. However i encourage anyone who like this to check out all of Steve Nile's other Cal Mcdonald Mysteries.
A Great Character in a Fun and Filthy Romp.......2006-06-07
Cal McDonald is Humphrey Bogart's classic noir detectives without the sense of decency. He's a hard-drinking, foul-mouthed, anti-authority dick... private dick, that is. Oh, and he also has the ability to see the supernatural for what it truly is.
Equal parts Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Maltese Falcon, "Savage Membrane" is an odd case with a memorable cast of characters, including Moloch, Cal's faithful ghoul sidekick. This isn't for the Goosebumps crowd, however, as much of the material contains drug use, foul language, and just sick nastiness (pedophiles ordering custom-made Frankenchildren, for example).
Not being particularly squeamish, I loved it, and would highly recommend it to fans of Garth Ennis, Robert Kirkman, or Chuck Palahniuk.
My only complaint, and it's somewhat of a big one, is that this book is poorly edited with a capital POOR. There's seemingly at least one typo on every page and it can sometimes pull you out of the story, which is a bummer. Someone should've cleaned this thing up before it hit the printer, but for all I know, it's the printer who's at fault. Whoever it is that's to blame, Moloch should pull out his kidneys.
That's It?.......2006-05-09
Reading this book was like watching a sitcom on TV: short, sweet, and quickly faded from memory.
There was potential here, and I wanted to like 'Savage Membrane', but the story was way under developed. I am a slow reader, and it only took me about 2 hours to read this book. At 208 pages with wide spaced, large type, there was very little substance to this book, and next to no character development.
A decent short story, not a good novel.
Glad there are more.......2005-12-08
I picked up this book because the cover image caught my eye; I bought it because the back cover described my kind of book. I wasn't dissapointed. In Savage Membrane, Niles introduces anithero Cal McDonald and sidekick Mo Lock. Cal is a poly-addict who drinks from morning to morning and induldges in pretty much any drug he can get his hands on, except heroin, he had a problem with heroin. Mo Lock, who is a Ghoul, is his faithful partner. Cal is a private investegator who has always had a knack for seeing the evil in the world. If you enjoy Anita Blake or Harry Dresden novels, you'll love this; Savage Membrane is an action packed, humorous, quick read packed full of monstors, magic, and substance (abuse).
