Customer Reviews:
Old and busted.......2007-05-05
I have always found this book to be cumbersome, difficult to navigate, poorly organized, and lacking in sufficient detail. But of course for years it was basically the only game in town, so everyone relied on it. Those days are over. I recently purchased Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards, and it is an outstanding book. If you're trying to decide which one to buy, definitely get Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards instead. And even if you already own Time-Saver Standards, do yourself a huge favor and buy Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards anyway. It covers everything that Time-Saver Standards does plus numerous other topics, all with much better explanations and details. To top things off, it has FAR more graphics and the entire book is better organized an easier to navigate than Time-Saver Standards.
Usefulness.......2006-07-16
As a practicing L.A., I have bought several McGraw-Hill Construction Books. I get a similar result each time: They seem on first look to fulfill the promise, but I found they don't well serve the need in real life. I get far better use out of Architectural Graphic Standards, and I'm looking forward to Wiley's Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards.
buy the book, forget the CD-ROM version.......2005-03-28
I've got the book and was hoping the CD-ROM would enhance using the book, but it doesn't. The content is very slim compared to the book, and the CAD drawings that are included are also of very limited use. Don't bother with the CD-ROM version of TSSLA.
This book is a must!!!!.......2004-02-06
A great book to have. It was a required text for my site technology classes. Kept referring to it. Lots of information. It should be on everyone's bookcase if you're a Landscape Architect student or already in the profession. I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
Good for a start on detailing..........2000-06-06
After having wandered through it a bit, this software seems to provide a good starting point for detailing. The interface is quite easy to use, and provides enough choices to make the results fairly accurate. The details that are provided form a good skeleton for devising more appropriate ones (if necessary). The only problem is that the details are completely exploded, so changing them can be tedious (i.e. altering dimensions or hatches), and depending on your office standards, there's a lot of layer work that may be done to get pen assignments and all of that done. So, at first glance it looks like a good tool for a starting point, and to provide 'place holders' for the information that's needed on the details... plus... easy to use and the graphical interface is nice.

Book Description
In an inconspicuous wooden box that had long gone unopened, Akimitsu Naruyama discovered 365 photographs of people with congenital and pathological deformations. After looking at just a few pictures, the Japanese art dealer and collector knew that he had discovered an extraordinary collection of photographs. ~A doctor and photography enthusiast, Ikkaku Ochi practiced his profession in Okayama, a prefecture of Shikoku, one of Japan's southern islands. He had his patients photographed during the last decade of the 19th century, producing images that are strikingly distinct from contemporary medical photographs, which serve as mere educational material and rarely as sensitive portraits of the diseased. Ochi's patients were recorded with dignity and respect, though the exposed, diseased parts of their bodies are explicitly documented and not for the squeamish. Individual photographs reveal the physical manifestations of syphilis in its final stages, elephantiasis of the testes or breasts, and other medical conditions--conditions that today are almost completely suppressed by medication or vaccination.~Cruel and melancholic, these photographs seen today possess an undeniable elegance and uncomfortable beauty, qualities that Akimitsu Naruyama recognized immediately when he opened that forgotten wooden box. Edited by Akimitsu Naruyama. Hardcover, 11 x 12 in./300 pgs / 0 color 0 BW0 duotone 185 Tritone~ Item D20312
Customer Reviews:
As Important a Document as it is Fascinating!.......2005-03-09
It is rare that the public has the opportunity to view 'medical abnormalities' in a platform that is not related to sideshows/circuses. This beautifully presented collection of people born with aberrant bodies, or who developed the sequelae of diseases once thought of as 'unclean' and therefore not to be observed, is the work of the Japanese physician Dr. Ikkaku Ochi a quiet genius who not only had the medical foresight to capture these stoic and brave patients on film, he also had the ability to compose images that are at once realistic and artistic.
True, other photographers such as Diane Arbus sought out similar subjects and it is through those portfolios that we have a bit of an introduction to the myriad treasures of this volume. But given the fact that these photographs were all taken in the decade around 1900 and that they were taken by a consummately humanistic physician allows us to study and appreciate all the variations that nature can produce - in a manner of sanctity and respect for the human soul.
This may not be a book for everyone, but for those who are devoted to photography and to medicine and to all the studies in between, this volume of Medical Photography from Japan circa 1900 is a humbly and warmly fascinating book. Grady Harp, March 05
Beautiful and disturbing.......2004-11-27
This collection of photographs is remarkable for several reasons: 1) the photos document the final stages of horrendous diseases (many of which are rarely seen these days); 2) the images are portraits of real individuals in great pain, but presented with stoic dignity; 3) it provides an insight into the remarkable level of surgical skill at work in Meiji-era Japan; and 4) the very survival of these photographs at all is something of a miracle when one considers they were sitting near ground zero when the American atom bomb exploded over Hiroshima.
Truly, this is not a volume for the squeamish. In these pages one finds a startling array of diseases, from smallpox to the bacterial infections that ravished faces and limbs. Tumors, conjoined twins and leprosy each receive equal billing, and with often startling clarity. Also here are the before-and-after shots where one sees how Japanese surgeons excised tumors or reconstructed a missing nose, which is especially poignant when one considers the very rudimentary level of sterility and anesthesia available at the time.
One can't help but be moved by these documents of human suffering and triumph, and then thank one's lucky stars that they live in an era of modern antibiotics and surgical practice.
My one reservation (hence the four out of five stars) is that the captions for the photographs don't actually appear in the book itself, but rather on the publishing company's website. A bit more explanation readily at hand would have made many of the photographs less mysterious - or perhaps even more compelling.
Book Description
Two extraterrestrial species have haunted - and hunted - mankind throughout history: one a parasitic killing machine that uses humans as unwilling hosts for its lethal offspring, the other a relentless stalker that uses otherworldly stealth technology and weaponry to take men as grisly trophy kills. For over two decades, Dark Horse Comics has catalogued these terrifying contacts, harnessing the talents of a virtual who's who list of comics, science-fiction and fantasy illustrators to bring these tales to life. And now, one deluxe volume gathers all the best of these visual horrors into one arena. Aliens/Predator: Panel to Panel showcases page after page of some of the most compelling artwork ever seen in graphic fiction, stunning visions by John Bolton, Dave Dorman, Mark Schultz, Richard Corben, Mike Mignola, Doug Wheatley, Arthur Suydam, Mark A. Nelson, Alex Maleev, Den Beauvais, Glenn Fabry, Jon Foster, David Michael Beck, Sam Keith, Doug Mahnke and many, many more.
Customer Reviews:
Reminds Me Why I'm a Fan.......2007-05-31
Intrigued, I picked this up at a gaming store down in Orlando. I'm truly glad I did! This is a great art book. Though writing of the various novels and graphic novels has oft sparked controversy, one cannot argue that there exists no good artwork for these horror franchises. This book is full of great pieces!
I admit to being a die-hard fan, it is true, but by any standards these pages showcase some truly spot-on talent. Graphic novel interiors and exteriors as well as paperback novel covers are all shown in this collection. Some art pieces get some nice two-page spreads that you truly don't want to show your grandmother. ;) There are even a few tongue-in-cheek parodies.
Some of the artists represented here include Dave Dorman, John Bolton, Mike Mignola (of Hellboy fame) and lots of others.
If I had to list one (very minor) drawback it might be the captions put to some of the images; a few might have been a bit better. But to be honest, the art was so nice, I barely noticed. I'd recommend this book to any fans of the franchises and any art lovers too. It's truly a nice collector's item.
