Customer Reviews:
Old and busted.......2007-05-05
I have always found this book to be cumbersome, difficult to navigate, poorly organized, and lacking in sufficient detail. But of course for years it was basically the only game in town, so everyone relied on it. Those days are over. I recently purchased Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards, and it is an outstanding book. If you're trying to decide which one to buy, definitely get Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards instead. And even if you already own Time-Saver Standards, do yourself a huge favor and buy Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards anyway. It covers everything that Time-Saver Standards does plus numerous other topics, all with much better explanations and details. To top things off, it has FAR more graphics and the entire book is better organized an easier to navigate than Time-Saver Standards.
Usefulness.......2006-07-16
As a practicing L.A., I have bought several McGraw-Hill Construction Books. I get a similar result each time: They seem on first look to fulfill the promise, but I found they don't well serve the need in real life. I get far better use out of Architectural Graphic Standards, and I'm looking forward to Wiley's Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards.
buy the book, forget the CD-ROM version.......2005-03-28
I've got the book and was hoping the CD-ROM would enhance using the book, but it doesn't. The content is very slim compared to the book, and the CAD drawings that are included are also of very limited use. Don't bother with the CD-ROM version of TSSLA.
This book is a must!!!!.......2004-02-06
A great book to have. It was a required text for my site technology classes. Kept referring to it. Lots of information. It should be on everyone's bookcase if you're a Landscape Architect student or already in the profession. I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
Mixed feelings on it, but a well balanced book.......2005-08-17
If you've never touched stained glass, this book is great. Its got accurate info on leaded and copper foil glass, and projects that progress from easy to difficult.
However the book feels a bit thin, and as mentioned already the inside margin along the book spine is less than 1/4", meaning you absolutely have to cut all the patterns out of the book with a razorblade very carefully.
If you've been doing glass a while, I would look for a different book.
disapointing.......2002-11-27
My biggest complaint about this book is it's design; the gutter width (the "blank' area between facing pages) is far too narrow for the columns of text closest to the binding of the book to be read with any ease whatsoever. One would literally have to tear the pages out of this book to read them without wrestling with the binding. Forget about having this book lay open as you work.
The black and white photos are of poor quality, disapointing in a book about a medium charecterized by it's vibrant colors. The designs provided with the book are, well- ugly.
The author is vague in his recomendations regarding tools and supplies, suggesting (infuriatingly) that one consult their "intructor or supplier". Step up to the plate, name names! I bought your book you weenie. What kind of soldering iron did YOU shell out your hard-earned money for?
I wouldn't have bought this book if I had seen it in a bookstore where I could pick it up and leaf through it. Ugh.
Do yourself a favor. Do a "Google" search for "stained glass instruction" there are guys willing to part with all the info in this book for free. Save eleven bucks.
Excellent beginner's book.......2001-03-07
I bought this book as an addition to my stained glass class through the local high school. It is great. It helps fill in the gaps and reminds me of what I forgot.
This book covers both copper foil and leading. While I can't speak for the leading, it has excellent information on the copper foil method. It's information on equipment is also up to date. Though the cover is in color the rest of the book is in black and white. This is probably why a book so jam packed with information, was so inexpensive. I didn't find the black and while photos to be a negative at all. There are pictures of everything and this is great. So many books just give you patterns and words.
Its tips on glass cutting I found very useful, since you don't always run into everything in class. It saved me some broken glass. Its troubleshooting hints on soldering were handy as well.
Also there are some projects in the back. I haven't made any but they have complete instructions (pictures too) and the patterns included.
The contents since ... does not provide it, is as follows:
1. HISTORY - GLASS Glass making, Stained glass, Jewels, Nuggets and Bevels, Color selection,
2. TOOLS OF THE TRADE Glass cutters, Pliers, Soldering Irons and Accessories, Lead tools, Miscellaneous Equipment, Safety Equipment, Grinding Equipment,
3. SUPPLIES Supplies, Work Surface, Lead Supplies, Copper Foil Supplies, Shopping list,

5. WORKING WITH PATTERNS Pattern Making, Using a Pattern for Glass cutting, Photocopying your patterns,
6. CONSTRUCTING A LEADED PANEL Introduction, Step by Step Instructions, Lead Soldering, Cementing,
7. CONSTRUCTING A COPPER FOILED PANEL Introduction, Step by step instructions, Soldering copper foil, Solder Troubleshooting Hints,

Exceptional book for beginners.......1999-12-19
I found this book great for anyone who wants to start stained glass. Needed supplies, basic techniques reguarding every aspect to get rolling. Cutting angles, and circles, foiling and soldering, much more, I dont think I could of started without it. If your at all interested in stained glass, this book is a must. Any questions you have, this book covers it. Well worth it! Also useful as a referance manual. Good luck!

Customer Reviews:
This book helped me a lot.......2005-11-18
I am glad I found this one. I recommend to all. I have not been doing this for long, and yet it still assisted me in getting into all facets.
Great book!.......2005-05-19
I am new to stained glass. This book is one of the most helpful, well written, easy to understand books that I've read to far. The author explains not only the steps to doing something, but why you're doing it. Great pictures to go with the instructions.
I recommend this book highly.
One of The Best Self Teaching Books for Stained Glass!.......2003-08-08
This is an excellent teaching/design book for the neophyte and intermediate stained glass worker. An outstanding feature is the above average quantity of color pictures throughout that will make it a pleasure as well for anyone who simply wants to enjoy the beauty of stained glass without going through the large group class experience. The book opens with descriptions and examples of various types of glass. The tool chapter demonstrates the basic tools needed and variations of them. Workspace setup and safety cautions are discussed with an illustrated design for a bench with glass storage. Next are true step by step sequential visual aids with 'build-along' patterns. The beginner will not be afraid to learn to cut glass as Daley goes through the process with step by step photos, the proper methods of handling, scoring and breaking glass. This is the same successful exercise she has taught for over 20 years to her beginning students. Pattern design is discussed with advice on choosing the glass for your project. Detailed information on lead came and copper foil construction follows with techniques for reinforcing the work. Stressed throughout is hands on experience. Daley has included the patterns for 'build-along' sessions for the lead came Fleur d'Lys, copper foil (demonstrating double glazing) Butterfly panel, and a stained glass box. Instructions for a kitchen clock, decorative mosaic vase and small table lamp (with extensive info on lamp hardware) are also projects that can be made from this book. Then as a finale (or prelude to further techniques) is a chapter on building a stained glass three dimensional project: in this case a totem pole light. This unique chapter touches on kiln fired molds, shaping glass and firing glass enamels.
This book is highly recommended. With so many purportive teaching books on the market all trying to get a piece of the action, this one stands alone as a class act. Daley is a contritubing artist to my own book, "How To Work In Stained Glass, 3rd ed".

The Home of the Surrealists: Lee Miller, Roland Penrose and Their Circle At
ASIN: 0500275092 |
Book Description
"Part memoir, part photo essay, part search for the real woman behind an unconventional mother....Should ensure Miller the place she deserves in future histories of the period."Art in America
Lee Miller: 1927: New York. Classically beautiful, she is discovered by Condé Nast and immortalized by Steichen, Hoyningen-Huene, Horst, and other famous photographers.
Lee Miller: 1929: Paris. Protégé and lover of Man Ray, she invents with him the solarization technique of photography and develops into a brilliant Surrealist photographer.
Lee Miller: 1939-1945: Europe. She becomes a U.S. war correspondent and covers the liberation of Paris. Her photographs of the Dachau concentration camp shock the world.
These are but three of the many lives of Lee Miller, intimately recorded here by her son, Antony Penrose, whose years of work on her photographic archives unearthed a rich selection of her finest work, including portraits of her friends Picasso, Braque, Ernst, Eluard, and Miró. To these are added many other photos that complement Penrose's highly readable biography of this uniquely talented artist. 171 duotone illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
a friendly bio.......2004-03-30
First I want to state that this is a very fine biography, the author (Miller's son) does an admirable job of showing the many different sides and personalities of a multi-gifted woman whose life spanned the tumultuous revolution of women's roles in society. But Lee Miller led a very complicated and somewhat contradictory life and the author manages (artifully, I admit)to avoid probing too deeply into the dark corners that would truly flesh out her life. There are crucial points in the book where a gentle fog of vagueness creeps in where an objective biographer would have strove for clarity, i.e. what exactly was the nature of her relationship with her father? He clearly had a huge role in her life and career (he began photographing her nude at a very early age)but the treatment of their relationship is ginger to say the very least. But issues outside the family are well covered, inside not so much. So to sum up, a good general bio but it is neither too critical nor too in depth on certain issues.

It's filled with cute cartoons of Ziggy. I purchased it as a gift and was a little disappointed that it was not a page a day with one cartoon for each day, also that it was in blue and white, not color, but overall it served the purpose for the recipient who is a school media specialist.
