Integrated Review of Two Top Books That Mesh Well.......2007-07-11
Although I normally read books in twos and threes on the same topic to gain varied perspectives, this is the first time I am writing a single review encompassing two books. They mesh together so well that I cannot imagine studying this subject without having BOTH in hand.
The two books are Sun, Wind & Light: Architectural Design Strategies, 2nd Edition and The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design.
Start with the introduction in the Guidebook, which is blessed with a Foreword from Paul Hawken and see especially page 13 where the cost benefits are shown, with 48% energy savings for Gold, 30% for Silver, and 28% for Certified. See also the illustration on page 15 that I have reproduced in the image I am loading for both books: the old decision model was Cost at the top, with Schedule and Quality anchoring the triangle. the new decision model still has cost at the top, but Schedule and Human Health, Safety, & Comfort are on corners of this new pentagon, and the bottom is achored by Quality and Ecology, or what Paul Hawken would call in his books, "true cost" to the Earth and Humanitas.
NOW shift to the Contents and the Detailed Contents of Sun, Wind, & Light. As one reviewer notes, this is a course book. I did not recognize it as such, I saw it as one of the most gifted complete collection of factors to learn and apply that I have ever seen for ANY topic of study. The content and organization of this book is nothing short of Nobel-level "wow." Finish going through this book.
NOW go back to the first 218 pages of the Handbook, and study the checklists and varied helpful boxes and explanations. The rest of the book (217-459) is case studies of specific buildings, each a few pages, that can be left for last.
At this point, I went into the Glossaries and Bibliographies of both books. Each is distinct, neither supplants the other. They must be taken together. I read Glossaries, and Indices, as content, and use them as a form of "second look" (in extremely complex books, this is actually where I start).
NOW go back to the Case Studies in the Handbook, and read each from the point of view of what "take away" lessons are there for your own building.
Reading these two books was a real treat. Outside my office kitchen is a deck with an 11 point system for attracting birds from bluebirds and bluejays to cardinals, gold finches, two kinds of woodpecker, and a flicker as well as the more common birds. I believe in diversity, and I believe that if we don't get our act together and start living up to the ideals of Natural Capitalism (see other recommended books below), our world will go sterile and dark before out great-grandchilden can share in the beauty of this planet. These two books are part of the solution, and I am in serious awe of those who made them available to all of us, and at reasonable prices to boot. Well done!!!

First Steps Towards a Green Design.......2006-06-25
I am a property owner considering LEED Certification for a building remodel. As a starting poijnt, I have read the LEED guidelines at the Green Building Council website. However, I was looking for something more substantial to help understand the process. "The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design" fills that purpose.
This Guidebook is written by the HOK Architectural firm which has been one of the leaders in sustainable design. The book has three sections. The first chapters are a check list of design guidelines and questions that one needs to explore during the LEED design process. The second section looks at sustainability issues as related to certain building types and the final section are a series of short articles on LEED projects the firm has worked on.
This Guidebook is on its Second Edition and is invaluable for all those interested in LEED certification. It is well written and clearly organized. It is an expensive book but well worth the price. It is a great introduction into what is becoming an important area of design. Highly recommended.
Must have........2001-03-10

How NOT to draw..........2006-08-10
This book starts out with some good basic principles of drawing - basic shapes in 3 dimensions; lighting and understanding value correlations on objects.
Ms. Hammond's techniques and exercises are horrible. If you would like to develop bad drawing habits - this IS the book for you.
Hammond's technique (using a 2B mechanical pencil) is to build up value (4 levels), then smudge and smear your way to success. Any artist - in regards to beginning drawing/ technique - knows that 'smudge/smear' is a drawing anathema. This technique deprives the striving student the opportunities to develop skills in building value; understanding contour of objects as revealed by the play of light and shadow; cross hatching to develop drawings with greater depth, etc. .
Additionally, Ms. Hammond has absolutely no understanding of how to establish and use vanishing point/s in a drawing - a shortcoming she illustrates clearly.
This technique renders drawings that are flat, 'dirty looking' (due to the smudge technique), and lacking in depth, contrast, and appeal.
Basic techniques for drawing lifelike images.......2006-08-03
This was my first Lee Hammond book and not likely to be the last. I have found that this book is very easy to follow, and a must have for any aspiring artist who loves to draw! It has helped me greatly in understanding how to use drawing tools and whenever I draw from it, I have loved ones peering over my shoulder to see what I'm drawing and the ohhhs' and awwws really put a smile on my face. Not to mention the finished product of my drawing. I didn't even know that I had that much talent but this book helps to bring it out of me and onto paper!
Love, Love, Love.......2006-04-06
I've just recently received this and 2 other books by Lee and absolutly love all of them. I am currently working from this book and can't rave enough about it. Her techniques have been so helpful that she has a lifetime fan, and my library will soon contain any and all books she has or will ever publish. Thank you Lee for making my drawings come to life. I can't put my pencil down.
MY FIRST LEE HAMMOND BOOK.......2006-03-13
THIS BOOK NOT ONLY TEACHES HOW TO DRAW BUT HOW TO MAKE EVERYTHING LOOK REAL. EASY ILLISTRATIONS AND CLEAR LANGUAGE MADE THIS BOOK FUN.
Possibly Lee Hammond's best book.......2005-08-06
Even if you own Lee Hammond's other drawing books, there is still a wealth of information to be gained from this one! The author provides clear instructions on a variety of topics -- from drawing stunning glass objects to producing the most technical architecture renderings -- it's all here, in the unique Hammond style.
If I had to choose one drawing book to keep, out of my entire collection, it'd likely be this one. I'm thoroughly enjoying the reading of it and looking forward to practicing the many tutorials it offers.
I give it a resounding A+.

Product Description
Nikkei Microdevices' 2006 report on flat panel display (FPD) industry includes:
-Exclusive in-depth interviews with 28 top executives in the industry
-Over 250 information-packed figures, tables and pictures
-Proprietary intelligence not available anywhere else
In 2006, competitive conditions in the flat panel display (FPD) industry will change significantly. The era in which competition was primarily based on increasing investment and glass substrate sizes is over. Henceforth, overall capability, including parts/material strategy and equipment strategy, will become the decisive factor. By 2010, parts and material costs will account for 80% of the total cost of large-size LCD panels, which will drive future market expansions; thus, parts and materials will make up most of the value addition in panels. Leading panel makers are starting to reinforce their cooperative relationships with parts and material makers, as well as with equipment makers.

Book Description
Cardcaptor Sakura was the top-selling girls' manga in Japan, and now it's the top-selling girls manga in America. Now fans can collect all of the full-color artwork from CLAMP featuring their favorite characters. The Art of Cardcaptor Sakura contains over 100 full color pictures from the series, most of which have never before been seen in America!
Customer Reviews:
Perfect for fans of Cardcaptor Sakura.......2004-09-25
This book is very nice. It's filled with nothing but CLAMP's artwork from the CardCaptor Sakura manga (CCS for short). If your a fan of CCS, or CLAMP, or manga in general, then chances are good you'll like this book a lot. There's also a cute short comic at the back and a little fold-out, double sided poster.
A definate" must get" for fans........2003-09-30
Personally, I think this is the best one out of all three.
If I could, I'd give it way more stars than this.
This book contains pictures that are in the manga and not in the manga. This book is 100% authentic manga. It also has artist notes about the pictures, which are in English. It also has a double sided poster with Syoran and Sakura on one side, and Tomoyo and Sakura on the other. This book also includes a mini comic of Syoran being sick.
A good collector's item for a ccs fan.
Another adorable item for a fan!.......2002-12-30
Having already gotten the first Cardcaptor Sakura artbook, I was thrilled to receive the second one for Christmas. This time around, there were pictures of everyone (except Meilin, who if I recall correctly doesn't appear in the manga and therefore cannot be expected to appear in the artbook). Some of the pictures of the guardians (such as Yue and Kero) were absolutely stunning and I think I like this book even better than the first one!
The comic at the end was a wonderful tie-in to the comic in the first artbook, acting as sort of a sequel to the vignette seen before. This time it features Sakura and Li, and the pullout in the back of the book is a reversible of Sakura and Li and then Sakura and Tomoyo. Some of my favorite Sakura images are in this artbook and I consider it well worth the investment.
The entire artbook was printed on high quality paper, versus just the images like happened in the last artbook. It seems a little smaller, especially when you hold them side by side, but the layout is the same and the pictures are just as wonderful. I highly recommend this, as it makes a great present for any fan of Cardcaptor Sakura, especially those in love with its art!
!!!Too Cute!!!.......2002-11-18
If you enjoy CCS manga and anime then this book is a must have. CLAMP's gorgeous CCS artwork is packed into these artbooks. The back of the artbook features a extremely cute manga of Sakura and Li which is an exclusive!!! The artbook also comes with a really cute picture of Sakura and Li together and on the other side Sakura and Tomoya. Both will leave you with wide eyes and drooling mouths.
