poor images and quality.......2007-01-31
The images and text in this book are of poor quality. If you are expecting a coffee table quality book of the same caliber as an Architectural Digest, look somewhere else.
FANTASTIC!.......2006-12-05
I thoroughly enjoyed this book from cover to cover. There are so many interesting stories and tid bits about the stars of Hollywood's golden age. From the suave Cary Grant to the powerful DeMille to the comic W.C. Fields. The homes are anywhere from spectacular to homey. This book also covers some famous theaters and restaurants. I highly recommend it!
Life can be unbearably sweet.......2006-08-21
Fantastic book that gives you access to the lifestyles of the truly privledged in Los Angeles. Jaw dropping pictures that other books can only dream of publishing. This is a must buy for anyone interested in Southern California architecture.
Voyeur.......2006-04-27
I loved this book. Something about the pictures... one feels like you're actually there... technically part of it is that the human eye sees inside and outside. Photographers get one of the other... but not both. In these pictures it feels like you are walking through a house... seeing it as a guest of the famous resident... and seeing it as you would if you were there in person. You can look at the room, the furniture, or out the window. There's an emotional quality that was stirred in me.
Likewise, the text is telling tidbits and gems that the famous owner might reveal to a friend... One learns things that you wouldn't dare ask. Its a great marriage between the past private and public lives of people that we all know. Though they are long in their graves, they come to life in this fascinating book.
I'd been in some of these homes. The Charles Laughton home in Palos Verdes, Portugese Bend, was a fascinating journey as a kid... walking over Peacock Flats, through the Vanderlip estate... looking for feathers, and hoping not to be caught. The fear that Quasimodo would emerge and chase us, I can still feel it. I think that going back there in the book, this was my favorite.
A Bricks and Mortar Tour of Hollywood Elegantly Presented.......2006-03-13
When Lucy and Ethel took the bus tour of the movie star homes on "I Love Lucy", you will undoubtedly recall Lucy finding herself bobbing for grapefruit at Richard Widmark's palatial estate. Now we can all see what is behind the other side of the barrier wall thanks to this elegant coffee table book compiled by fervent Hollywood historian David Wallace. With some beautiful photos and descriptive, trivia-laden text, he includes twenty-five buildings and homes that were designed and built during Hollywood's golden era.
Painstakingly restored to their original grandeur, they represent a variety of eclectic architectural styles from Art Deco to Mediterranean and Spanish Colonial. While the typical landmarks such as Graumann's Chinese Theater are here, the book is highlighted by the homes of screen legends like Carole Lombard, Gloria Swanson, Cecil B. DeMille, Chales Laughton, Cary Grant and Randolph Scott, and Charlie Chaplin and Paulette Goddard. The furnishings within the homes are not so much lavish as surprisingly idiosyncratic and insightful to the personalities inhabiting the settings. The photographs by Juergen Nogai are often stunning and give evidence of both the creativity and decadence pervasive at the time. This is definitely a fun one to peruse.

Enjoyable Too.......2007-04-11
Thought it would be much more heavy and academic. Is an easy read without dumbing down. Great for getting you going again if youhave "fallin off the wagon".
great.......2007-04-10
what a great book. it's up-to-date and goes through everything you could ever want to know about documentary filmmaking.
The Ultimate Guide to Documentary Filmmaking.......2007-03-26
I already use Rabinger's "Directing" tome as my filmmaking bible, and always refer to it when planning productions and right before shooting. So when I started a documentary project, I knew I had to get this version dedicated to that aspect of filmmaking. I was not disappointed. Right away, his advice improved my project planning and helped me make a much better project pitch than I originally had. And once again, it's loaded with practical advice that's very easy to read and use. Rabinger knows how to put together a great reference resource. Too bad all books weren't put together like these.
Great book for filmmakers of all kinds.......2006-09-21
this book includes all kinds of useful information that is not necessarily specific to documentary, although that is it's focus. there's excercises in here to help develop ideas into a filmic narrative, ethics, how to tackle an interview as well as subject matter. i've read a lot of film books, and i have to say, this is not only well written with a sense of humor and wit, it deals with potential situations in a down to earth way. The information provided is not just technical, but also how to approach an emotional situation, gain the trust of your participants, and address multiple points of view.
Directing The Documentary.......2006-07-19
I am currently writing a documentary for a feature length film, and found Michael Rabiger's book informative, subtle, and well structured. Having received a documentary film class at University, I had already learned about the basic tools of the medium. This book provides a masterclass in documentary filmmaking, and prepares you for the demands of documentary filmmaking. I recommend it to students and professionals alike.

Book Description
As Alan Rosenthal states in the preface to this new edition of his acclaimed resource for filmmakers, Writing, Directing, and Producing Documentary Films and Videos is “a book about storytelling—how to tell great and moving stories about fascinating people, whether they be villains or heroes.”
In response to the technological advances of the last six years and the demands of cable TV stations like Discovery and A&E, Alan Rosenthal reconsiders how one approaches documentary filmmaking in the twenty-first century. Foregoing theory and hardware, Rosenthal tackles the day-to-day problems from initial concept through distribution, emphasizing the research and writing approach.
He offers examples of interviewing, narration writing, and the complexities of editing. Simply and clearly, Rosenthal explains how to write, direct, and produce the documentary, whether film or video. New aspects of this third edition include nonlinear editing techniques, a complex budget example and its analysis, plus a chapter on “Staying Alive,” which details how European and U.S. stations approach documentary and how the Internet can help filmmakers find new markets. A new chapter has been added to address the growing genre of family films.

A good guide for those first starting...........2007-04-05
In starting something new, the potential making missteps that can derail the whole process is always present. This book helps you avoid those and has advice on how you can develop a quality product that people will want to see. Very worthwhile.
excellent resource.......2002-04-27
Even while reading this book I was able to pitch an idea for an event and documentary project, my first, and gain acceptance for the project. The concepts are helpful as well as practical.
I read a lot of books once I am interested in a subject and I would place this one at the top for documentaries.
Sell your kids to buy this book.......2001-09-27
There is little in written text that summarise the worth of this book. I was so moved by its detailed and incisive content and direction that I sold my kids to afford the time and space, the peace required to absorb the rivetting content.
As I sat at my video production terminal I realised that the nirvana of books on docudrama had been produced. This is the sort of book that makes you go and get the authors name tattooed on your butt.

FIVE STARS, excellent, excellent, excellent........2001-06-25
This book is a masterful resource for any filmmaker regardless of their expertise.
No one has come close in their summation of the documentary process. It is 2001, the book was released in 1996, it is timeless. The best book on the market, a better book could only be devised by the author.
Four years of preperation in one book. Every student, professional filmmaker, enthusiast should have it. I have even allowed persons/subjects whom I was documenting to read this book. It made the process that much easier. They were extremely thankful. PURCHASE THE BOOK.
Great source of info..........2001-03-21
I find myself opening this book up over and over again . I have learned alot from the writer of this book . I would tell anyone who is going to make a documentary , they should have this book on there desk.
Book Description
This ambitious book from author, producer and director Michael Tobias draws together the voices of 40 renowned documentary filmmakers from around the world.
These contributors shed unique light on contemporary culture and aesthetics, the filmmaker's commitment to the documentary form, and the documentary production process from concept to marketplace. They also probe provocative questions: What is reality in a documentary? Can and should there be objectivity in a documentary? What is the role of social advocacy in a documentary? How do new production technologies affect a documentary's message?
This is the first book that brings together an international roster of documentary filmmakers to speak about the very heart and soul of their art. It should prove to be an invaluable guide for both professionals and students, and will appeal to general filmgoers as well.
Customer Reviews:
A Good Idea Wasted.......1999-06-15
This book is a collection of essays of varying quality by documentary filmmakers. There are some worthwhile nuggets, but much of the content is obviously filler. Michael Tobias is credited as the book's editor, but there's little evidence of any editing. The pages are filled with errors in grammar and typography, and many of the essays ramble aimlessly. This is unfortunate, because this sort of book is much appreciated. Gabriella Oldham's 'First Cut: Conversations with Film Editors' will be of more interest to filmmakers. Hopefully, a second edition of 'The Search For Reality' will be treated with more care than the first. Very disappointing.
Disappointing.......1999-05-18
I expected this book to contain suggestions from established filmmakers on how to film with minimal impact on the subject. However, this book was nothing but a collection of anecdotes on why the filmmakers went into documentary filmmaking. If you're a film student, it could be inspirational. If you're a filmmaker or videographer, keep looking.

Documentary Storytelling for Video and Filmmakers
ASIN: 0809316366 |
Book Description
"For me, working in documentary implies a commitment that one wants to change the world for the better. That says it all."—Alan Rosenthal
An international documentary filmmaker with more than 60 films to his credit including the Peabody Award winner "Out of the Ashes," Rosenthal has written the first book to address the realities facing a documentary filmmaker. Rather than dealing with theory or hardware, this book tackles the day-to-day problems of the documentary filmmaker from initial concept through distribution. Rosenthal explains in a down-to-earth manner how to approach, create, write, and direct the "new" documentary He emphasizes the research and writing of documentaries, from approach and structure through interviewing, narration writing, and the complexities of editing.
The organization of the book follows the process of making a film. Part 1 discusses ideas, research, and script structure; parts 2 and 3 go over preproduction and production; part 4 explores film editing and narration writing; part 5 discusses distinctive film styles; and the concluding chapter offers a perspective on the entire filmmaking process.
Book Description
In a dark and grim future drunk on technology, the ways of the past have not been forgotten. Kenji has been trained as a Samurai, sworn to uphold the code of the warrior. Now he faces his greatest challenge: clearing his father's name. He must travel to Seattle, where corporations have replaced clans and greed has won out over honor, to find out the truth behind his father's death and bring down the men responsible. Artist and 30 Days of Night co-creator Ben Templesmith is joined by writer Dan Wickline (The Conversation) on this warrior's tale.
Customer Reviews:
Good visuals.......2005-09-18
A good comic has both good story and good art to tell it with. The story here is good: japonisme moderne (OK, I'm a sucker for it), revenge, and white-hat hacking. The good guys win, the ladies have good roles, and the bad guys get something bad.
The art is what drew me in. I'm a nut for fine prints, and most of the style is like etching with heavy plate tone, almost monoprint. Drawing is strong and more expressive than realistic, a stark linear style. Color is daubed on, like an etched plate inked au poupee. Color is restrained too - black linear drawing plus one "plate tone" in each panel, and maybe a little highlight color. My only disappointments came from breaks in this strong style. Some scenes, esp. pp13-15, tried a soft focus that just broke the mood. Also, the background color, what I've been calling 'plate tone', is different in different panels on a given page rather often. Send this artist back to Ms. Tree! There is strength in restraint, and this work can be stronger than it is.
I don't recognize the names of these artists. Perhaps this is their early effort. I certainly hope so, because I want to see this work in mature form. That will certainly be worth waiting for.
