5 out of 5 stars A FIVE STAR book on the history of Furniture.......2006-09-18

Books on furniture and styles have lately been written as thou they are a catalog. At the college I attend, one of the instructors has written a book about Modern Furniture and frankly... it looks like an assemblied catalog. This book how ever is done with care to show not only the piece of furniture (the problem with other furnirute books) but rather shows the piece in its nature surroundings. Photos are from the actually castle, mansions or current home owners own settings. Modern furniture is shown as it used by the average person and not marketed to the masses. The photos are clear, warm, inviting and sometimes funny as well. Styles: Compendium of Interior was written as thou it was produced for a college interior design course. And I truly wish this was the book my instructor was using instead of the one they now offer. I have recommended this book to the college and I recommend it to you. This is a must have book for furniture collectors, interior design students or anyone who loves mansions. This book is thick and difficult to put down......that's a very good thing.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Quality Book.......2007-08-20

I love Charles Addams. In fact, I own five collections of his work. This one is by far the worst. It is printed on paper resembling newsprint and the print quality is low. There isn't enough contrast - areas that should be black are grey and the images look washed out and muddy. You can tell by the completely inappropriate colorization of the characters in bright colors on the front cover that something is wrong with this book. On the back, there is an ad for the Addams Family movie. It's obvious that this book is an exercise in cheap profiteering somehow correlated with the release of the movie. Do yourself a favor and see these cartoons in their full glory with good contrast printing on nice paper. Try getting "The World of Charles Addams" c.1991 used. It's a real, quality art book and well worth a few extra dollars.

4 out of 5 stars Charles Addams at his macabre best.......2006-06-22

Addams is the cartoonist with the twisted sense of the macabre whose characters were the impetus for the excellent television comedy "The Addams Family." They are a group of people modeled after the icons of the horror genre. The parents are Count Dracula types and their house is broken down in the classic haunted house sense.
This book contains some of best efforts ever and they are funny. His twisted sense of humor extends beyond the Addams family to many other absurd situations. Two men are stranded on a desert island in the ocean and it looks like the continental United States. A man in a suit and top hat is walking by a nursery school and a schoolmarm type is sitting in a tower holding a Tommy gun. She has a stern expression and is facing inward towards the children. A man is in a dilapidated boarding house and has his head in the gas oven. A shrewish looking woman is telling him that he doesn't have kitchen privileges.
I smiled my way all through this book, no one makes the macabre more funny than Charles Addams and this book is 192 pages of his best efforts.

5 out of 5 stars The macabre cartoons of the great Charles Addams.......2005-03-24

The argument can be made that Charles Addams is the father of American "sick" humor, starting when "The New Yorker" publishes his first cartoon in 1935. Of the 189 drawings in this 20th anniversary reprinting of "My Crowd," a collection of the best cartoons from the first six Addams books, 185 originally appeared in "The New York" between 1937 and 1969. Of those 50 are of the Addams family, and if all you know is the classical television series or the pair of theatrical films, then you owe yourself a chance to see the inspired original. From Lurch giving Morticia a start (19) to Uncle Fester smiling while everybody else in the audience is weeping copiously (192), these are among the best cartoons in the book and evince a dry wit that could never really translate onto the small screen or the silver screen.

My father had a collection of cartoons from "The New York," which had several choice efforts of Addams' work, all of which seem to be included here. But even in my pre-teen years it was clear that Chas. Addams was something special. One of my favorites was of a patent attorney pointing a strange weapon out his window and telling the applicant: "Death ray, fiddlesticks! Why it doesn't even slow them up" (181). One of the things I picked up on this time around through this book were those Addams cartoons that do not look like Addams cartoons. By this I simply mean those in which the artistic style is not what we are used to from his pen (e.g., his explanation for Stonehenge on page 30). There are also several cartoons dedicated to turning the traditional fairy tale on their head (or some other body part), and I like the one where the alien invasion arrives on Halloween night (161), and the one where Leonardo Da Vinci is trying to get Mona Lisa to smile (187), and stop me now before I name half the cartoons in the book.

But so many of the classic Addams cartoons do not even involve captions, leaving it to the viewer to figure out "what is wrong with this picture" (e.g., a baby carriage with bars on it, the list of ingredients on the side of the Witch's gingerbread house in Hansel and Gretel, and Uncle Fester sharpening the points on the top of the iron fence). The world of Chas. Addams is just slightly a skewed, but in a ghoulish and macabre way. The only complaint would be that seeing the Addams family colored in on the cover seems so wrong (I prefer to think of them as all have pale and pasty complexions). But that is not going to be enough to stop you from tracking down "Drawn and Quartered," "Monster Rally," "Favorite Haunts, "Creature Comfrots," "The Dear Dead Days," and the rest of the collections of the cartoons of Charles Addams. Just be sure you read them all before you die.

4 out of 5 stars "Suddenly, I have a dreadful urge to be merry.".......2004-08-25

My Crowd is a collection of some 200 cartoons (most of which are full page) by the comically macabre illustrator Charles Addams. About half of these cartoons focus on the ghoulish family who enjoys the things in life many find to be hideous (like lovely poisonous plants and Ebenezer Scrooge "bless his heart"). This family, who was introduced by Addams in the New Yorker in 1932, spawned the T.V. show named after the artist. The cartoons featuring this family are some of the best ones in this books; from the bratty son hanging up "Bridge Out" and "Blasting Ahead" signs he stole for his bedroom to the proud parents reading a letter from the school about their son's "perverse, crafty, and wanton" behavior, to poor "Lurch" being admonished for not picking up an eye of newt at the grocery store. The father is more freaky than the amorous Gomez of the T.V. show. The drawings of the mother (Morticia in the series, the characters were not given names in the cartoon) are the best. Her body language and expressions are great, even if she is just standing with her arms crossed. Other reoccurring characters, like the handyman who's asked to fix a squeak on a trap door and puts in a window so the family has a delightful view of the cemetery lends the family series even more continuity.

The other cartoons are also often ghoulish but also very witty. Some have no text like the drawing of two unicorns watching in the rain as an arc sails away or an actress screaming directly to the camera on the movie screen while everyone in the audience turns around to see what she's screaming at. Then there is the couple driving past a sign that says "Children At Play" and, ahead of them, you see children ready to push a giant boulder into their path. Another one of my favorites are the prince and princess telling the Medieval marriage counselor they are not "living happily ever after." The cartoons were taken from six books by Charles Addams so, it is probably meant to whet one's appetite around the time of the last Addam's Family movie rather than to be an exhaustive chronicle of Addams' work. If you like dark humor (i.e. Edward Gorey) this book is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Addams Family source better than any of its successors........1999-06-03

Part of the beauty of the original "Addams Family" tv show, and an aspect of the show that has been almost totally lost throughout the first average animated series, the two okay movies, and the most recent abysmal animated series, was that the Addamses themselves did not exist in a vacuum; surrounding them, throughout their town and the world, was a network of individuals, shops, and organizations that shared the same "bizarre" tastes that they did. The Addamses were never non-conformists as such; they honestly thought that most of the world was just like them. This "Addamsian" subculture was, admittedly, quite understated in the tv show, but Charles Addams's original comics portrayed it clearly and delightfully. It's a world of three-armed people, casual magic, ingenious children, multi-species interaction, and, almost always, a sense of the macabre which recognizes itself as nothing but part of the norm. In addition to the Addams Family characters themselves (never actually named in the comics; they were "the Addams family" in the same way that the characters in "Doonesbury" would be called "the Trudeau troupe"), there were other occasional recurring characters, providing a sense of continuity that emphasized Mr. Addams's ongoing theme: everyone and everything is weird, to someone else, somewhere. The only flaw in this book is one that it may not have been originally intended to address (the book was first published years ago, only reissued recently in conjunction with the movie): it's not a complete collection of all the comics featuring the proto-Addamses themselves. Still, the comics of Charles Addams rarely fail to entertain and provoke. Gary Larson and his legion of imitators have never really reached the heights that Charles Addams by and large maintained until his death.

    4 out of 5 stars INSIDE SCOOP.......2007-06-08

I purchased this book looking for some insight into the minds of the women of the nfl. Nicole Berti lays it out in a forward, plain spoken, no holds barred analysis. She covers the draft, life in a new city, her NFL peers and the life - the good, the bad and the ugly. She makes a great point about the woman married to these guys - they are always asked if they married them pre-fame or post-fame. She nails it on the head when she reveals the assumptions made by the public, the fans and the groupies. Great read for anyone who is looking for the real NFL from a womans perspective - not the tv version.

    3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2005-12-10

Interesting, but I was not sure if she was trying to be informative or do lots of name dropping. Also there is name calling and mud slinging. Still, an interesting read for the most part.

    4 out of 5 stars WOW!!.......2005-01-27

What an eye-opening book this is!! Nikki doesn't hold back and for anyone who reads it, you too will be surprised. Or maybe you won't! Maybe it will be exactly how you pictured the NFL, but I doubt it.

4 out of 5 stars For anyone interested in life inside the NFL.......2004-11-28

This is a "must read" for anyone who:
    1. Is a player in the NFL
    2. Is the mother, wife, girlfriend of an NFL player
    3. Is someone aspiring to play in the NFL
    4. Is the parent of someone aspiring to play in the NFL
    5. Is a relative of someone playing in the NFL
    6. Is someone who's interested in life inside the NFL!

The author, Nikki Berti doesn't pull any punches in her first-account expose. She names names, and provides details of some of the bizarre, rude, obnoxious players, wives, and coaches of some of your favorite franchises. This is the entertainment part of her book!

The instructional part comes in the form of actions taken and decisions made by Nikki and her husband Tony. Some are good, sound decisions. Decisions that kept the Berti's from falling into the traps associated with money and fame. But Nikki also discusses the mistakes they made. What decisions they would do over if given the chance; if someone had written a book honestly presenting the less glamorous side of professional sports. Nikki has written such a book.

If given the chance to do it all over again, would Nikki and Tony do it? This is not "spoiler" review. You'll have to read the book to find out ....

Very little useful information. If you planning a home theatre this book really doens't offer any information on design or component integration. Very basic in it's approach with references to VCR's and other dated technology.

As an proffesional I apreciate this book, it gives precise information. It is well written and on plain english as it's posiblle.

                  I recomending this book!

1 out of 5 stars Very Useful Reference.......2006-12-20

I bought this book as a quick reference for a Technical Support group I manage. We have a few dozen products that require an installer to run wires throughout a house. Unfortunately, a large majority of the calls I get are wiring related and this book provides tremendous insight into the problems created by improper wiring.

If you want to learn about wiring, this is the book to buy. I also bought the full book that goes with it. It must be good because I got the only paperback, and all the used hardback books are almost double the retail price.

From this guide you'll learn everything relating to wiring. You'll learn balanced vs unbalanced, ground loop isolation vs cross talk, and the list would almost be half as long as the pocket guide. Simply put, if your livlihood depends upon wiring, this book will help you a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars So much information in such a small space. Best of its Kind........2006-05-01

Belden is the king of cables and Stephen Lampen is a Belden Kingpin. This book is one-of-a-kind and is a must for anyone working with, or even remotely interested in audio, video, data and/or CATV cabling. It is essential, fundamental knowledge about using cables.

Nope, it's not for the "novis" but I believe a novice will find it interesting if you understand the concept that 2 wires make a circuit. Take your time with it and Google anything you don't understand. There are some complex topics in here but nothing you won't get your head around if you read it and think about it. It is presented in a good, logical progressive order.

Stephen makes it all readable with many interesting and amusing anecdotes and tidbits. The "Grounded Dog" story (p 363) is worth the price of the book alone.

I've been in broadcast Engineering for years and this book solved a few mysteries for me.

Check out the contents list to see if it's for you.

I purchased this product with a novis knowledge of electronics. I could not understand one page. If you are a novis this is not the book for you.

                  Book Description

The Digital Video Pocket Guide is concise, easy to use, and is overflowing with the techniques you'll need to know to create great movies. This book is organized, like the popular Digital Photography Pocket Guide, into three chapters: "What Is It?", "How Does It Work?", and "How Do I...Tips, Tricks, and Techniques". Its compact size, organization, and detailed illustrations make it easy to find the information you need. In the first chapter, "What Is It?", you're introduced to the ins and outs of your DV camcorder. Author Derrick Story builds the solid foundation that helps you better understand the camera you have now, and will prove invaluable when shopping for your next camcorder. For instance, what is a tally lamp, and do you need one? What is the difference between the optical and digital zoom? Should you spend the extra money for a 3-CCD chip? Chapter two puts the tools in action. It maps out, step by step, a sure-fire approach to successful movie making -- including home videos, tutorials, and even short features. This chapter takes the worry out of organizing and lets you focus on creativity. Next, you'll accelerate your prowess by learning the rock-solid techniques of video experts. Among the tips and tricks featured in chapter three are how the pros shoot action video, arrange lighting for an interview, and capture clean audio. Finally, the Appendix is packed with well-organized tables and charts on a myriad of topics and includes: a color temperature chart, a guide to color correction gels, a table of everyday lux ratings, a handy cable connector guide, a reference for microphone patterns, and much, much, more. Completely indexed, beautifully illustrated in color, and more compact than those bulky books that never make if off your bedside nightstand, the Digital Video Pocket Guide is the ultimate shooting companion that will help your create the videos you want to show to friends, family, or even the world at large.

I recently reviewed this and the more recent Oreilly book, Digital Video Hacks, with contributions from the author. Hacks is much more up-to-date and contains lots of things from the Pocket Guide. But a lot of the troubleshooting tips from Pocket Guide are about using cameras and mikes, not stuff likely to go out of date. Here is what I wrote specifically about Pocket Guide:

For readers looking for more information about the shooting process itself, the cheaper and more succinct 2003 Digital Video Pocket Guide by Derrick Story covers that information superbly. Story's book goes into more detail about equipment to buy as well as how to resolve lighting and sound problems. There's only so much you can say in 112 pages, but 30 of those pages are devoted to solving practical shooting problems (i.e., the walking interview, dealing with wind , etc.) Another 30 pages consists of reference material and tables about basic camera concepts (i.e., how aperture relates to depth of field). Also, this book in particular has a high percentage of color photographs, which (like those in Digital Video Hacks) make it easier to understand what the writer is getting at. Some of the information from Digital Video Pocket Guide is duplicated in Digital Video Hacks, but lately I've found myself referring more often to the Pocket Guide than the Video Hacks book.

So... You got a new digital video camera for Christmas, and you want to be the next Spielberg? Unless you've had experience in how to shoot good video, you'll end up with a lot of home movies in digital format that don't look any better than anyone else's home movies. To remedy that, get a copy of Digital Video Pocket Guide by Derrick Story (O'Reilly). In 113 pages, you'll learn the essentials of how your camera works, basic editing and shooting techniques, and tips on how to improve your video quality. While this shouldn't be the only video guide you get, it will be more than enough to get you started on the way to making movies that people will enjoy watching.

4 out of 5 stars DV Pocket Guide offers great tips for better videography.......2003-12-25

Digital videography is challenging and this useful pocket guidebook makes taking videos more exciting and fun. By following many of the suggestions and tips throughout this small reference book you will find it helpful when preparing for your next home movies. This is one of the few books dedicated to digital video. Most current publications like magazines keep you up to date with the latest gear but this book is more in-depth on the art of video productions. The author Derrick Story has written many books and provided photographs for countless others. The pocket guide is a series of small books that includes titles like digital photography, Macintosh Troubleshooting, Extreme Programming and over 200 other pocket guide titles.

As a video producer I found this book very easy to read and understand and felt this reference book would offer any level of videographer benefits from this information. The book is broken into 3 chapters and one reference guide. The first chapter starts with "What is it". This chapter covers the camcorder basics and may other more advanced concepts including time-code, analog line-in, aperture, image sensor, interlaced video and progressive scan. I was quite surprised that these subjects were covered since these are new features found on the newest camcorders and the average videographer may not be familiar with the concepts. It is nice to read about some of the newest features and how they can benefit the end user. This first chapter is very comprehensive going well beyond the camcorders instruction manual.

The second chapter covers the physical camera and its features, how does it work explain concepts and techniques for today's digital video shooting. The section on time-code and logging was invaluable. The third section is how do I...Tips, Tricks and Techniques offers 12 very helpful and modern information on what the average shooter may encounter.

One concept that often overlooked in the wave of new technology is the fundamentals. The art of storytelling is true regardless of the latest and greatest camcorders and accessories. The author emphasizes the camcorder is just the tool that allows the individual to create and visualize your message. I found myself revisiting several techniques that I have used in my video business on a recent trip to Baltimore for the US Open table tennis championships. I took my camcorder and candidly interviewed several players and officials. When taping my subjects I utilized the walking interview tips in the final section. The ability to change background offered variety to many of the candid comments. I also used the technique of entrances and exits. This allows the subject to enter the frame follows them for a period of time and then let them exit the frame. This clean shooting transition is a bridge commonly used in movies and TV shows.

Overall this book is very useful and I found several of the tips very informative. I recommend this book for the beginner and intermediate level digital video user.

Book Review: "Digital Video Pocket Guide"
                  by John Suda

"Digital Video Pocket Guide", by Derrick Story, is another in the series of "Pocket Guides" from O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. Like the others, it is a well-written, comprehensive introduction to a technical/aesthetic area.

This is a small, pocket-size book of 113 pages, including index, published on bright, glossy paper which provides brightness and contrast for its included photographs and makes it easier on the eyes for reading.

I have been contemplating investigating digital video myself for some time and found this little volume to be a near perfect introduction for a couple of reasons. First, the substantive material contains about everything one needs to get a start in digital video, from buying a camera, to learning and understanding its controls and features, to using the equipment, and tips on how to get some quality production from the camera. The second reason is the unusual (for a computer book) author's "voice". Story's style is casual, friendly, clear, simple, encouraging, and even soothing, Imagine attending a 2 or 3 hour presentation by an informed camera salesperson who knows how to produce videos, who has the personality and presentation of Mr. Rogers.

It's the substantive material which is most important however. Story walks the reader through the entire movie-making process, from start to finish. Even technical concepts like "black the tape", "bumping", and "zebra patterns" are made simple and easy to follow.

The book has three parts encompassing explanation of the equipment, how to use it, and how to produce some quality product. There is an appendix of a handful of quick reference tables pertaining to color temperature charts, types of microphones, and other incidental matters.

The best sections deal with learning how to shoot scenes including how to light a scene, and how to prevent wind from ruining your audio. There is a nice 10-step movie production checklist which details all one needs to start and complete a beginner's video project.

For a small volume on a technical topic, this is an unusual good read.

4 out of 5 stars Great guide for video camera users.......2003-08-20

This book claims to be a handy pocket guide for anyone who uses a digital video

camera. I would disagree with this claim in one resepect and that is that it

caters for the amatuer and pro alike. I found this guide to be well and truely

aimed at the amatuer or entry level user - and this is not a bad thing.
I think it is definately a fine resource for anyone with a digital video camera

and will improve and assist a huge number of camcorder users to produce better

videos. It contains heaps of very valuable tips and tricks to improve shooting in

a wide range of situations. I found the pro-tips sidebars to be quite a good way

to introduce slightly more advanced techniques and this will help readers to

explore slightly more advanced techniques. The photographs are first rate and

illustrate the discussed procedures very well. The manuals that are provided with

camcorders are generally pretty dry and most people only give them a cursory

once over, this book is nicely written and well illustrated and interesting

enough to encourage people to read it end to end. And if you do I can't see how

you'll fail to improve your video shooting.
I would definatley recommend this book for everyone who wants to pick up some

basic tips, tricks and tools to improve their everyday video shooting.

Wapsi Square is a web based cartoon, which you can follow at [...]. The cartoon is the work of Mr. Paul Taylor, and is a joy to follow - it's the story of a group of friends and the subtle interactions between them. And then there is Dietzel, the smartest dog besides Snoopy. Wapsi Square is subtle, exquisitely drawn, sweet, imaginative, funny, lovable and original.
This book contains a collection of early Wapsi Square cartoons, and a few pages of bonus illustrations where Mr. Taylor shows us various steps in the creative process. My one peeve is that the book could have been thicker, and contained more cartoons. Perhaps Mr. Taylor will consider one day to make yearly collections of his cartoons.
If you're a fan of Wapsi Square, you will enjoy this book - it's a way of holding the characters in your hand, instead of just looking at them on a computer screen. If you are not familiar with Wapsi Square, do yourself a favor and go to the web site: they will put a smile on your face. And then you'll want to get this book.
My one wish is that Mr. Taylor publishes a more prominent volume of this wonderful cartoon, something similar to the format of the Calvin & Hobbes books.

Okay, so I haven't bought the book yet, but you better believe I will. I started reading this at work during the slow hours, and I was just freaking amazed out how great it was. I read a lot of web comics, but this one really stood out. The first years are about normal situations, and like any good story-teller Paul (??) finds ways of making you desire the characters, but moreover to desire certain situations and circumstances, like Owen and Shelly; they should totally be together.
Anyway, I wanted to say this rocked and that I really hope it comes out in hardback so I can read it without ruining it. Also, the only reason this is four stars and not five is because I wish he would quit his job and make more strips 24 hours a day. Seriously...
