Book Description
In the tradition of the Bungalow series, here is a marvelous celebration of the twentieth century's most delightful and whimsical architectural style
Storybook Style, the rambunctious evocation of medieval Europe in American housing, was born in the early 1920s and almost forgotten by the late 1930s. It took its inspiration from the Hollywood sets that enthralled Americans of the period and that still appeal to our jaded modern eye. Half timbered and turreted, pinnacled and portcullised, these houses owed their fanciful bravura to architects and builders with theatrical flair, fine craftsmanship, and humor. In Storybook Style, architectural information enhances the stunning color pictures by Bungalow and Painted Ladies photographer Doug Keister to impart a wealth of information and enjoyment.

STORYBOOK STYLE.......2007-01-10
A BEAUTIFUL LOOK AT WHIMSICAL HOMES FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART - THE BEST I'VE SEEN ON THE SUBJECT -
Thrilled to find this book!.......2005-06-08
I happened upon this book on Amazon last year - shortly after purchasing my very first home - a little storybook cottage. I've always adored this style of home but never knew what to call them. I was so happy to find this book and see someone had come up with a name for these enchanting homes. This book has brought me hours of enjoyment. I read it cover to cover immediately but I look through it over and over again. It has been such a help in giving me inspiration and information for the restoration of my little storybook home. I cannot sing enough praises for this book - my only complaint - I want another volume. If a Storybook Style 2 were to be published - I would buy it the very day it came out!!!!
This book is both informative and beautiful. It's a must for any storybook owner and anyone that is interested in architectural styles or anyone wishing to create their own storybook home.
Rare original idea.......2003-10-10
My first impression of this book was that it was a trifle; once I started to read it though, I discovered it was surprisingly substantial. What a joy to look at these quaint medieval-inspired houses. Lots of them, and all those turrets! You won't find mention of this phenomenon in any of the popular books on house styles, and the author deserves credit for documenting it.
The book displays a professional knowledge of architecture, unlike many in this category which seem to be written by art historians, and you can rest assured the author will not confuse a mullion with a muntin, or claim, as another one once did, that Tudor is an early Rennaissance style. (Although he happens to be incorrect in saying "terra cotta" means "hollow tile"; it means "baked earth".)
No vacant catalog-esque prose here; the author knows his subject and enjoys telling others about it.
Whodathunkit - a page-turner architecture book!.......2003-09-17
5 stars plus! A book to delight the heart! It's so well-written you don't want to stop reading, yet you want to see what delight awaits on the next page. My suggestion - page through and look at all the pictures - then go back and read it all. Great job - please do another one!
These guys did a similar book called Red Tile Style, on spanish revival architecture - if you like this one, check it out- it's also very well done.
Homes out of Hollywood fantasy land.......2003-03-26
Idea books for cottages and cottage detailing don't get much better than this. This book tells the story of the emergence of the Storybook style in the early part of the 20th century-- a style that came right out of the fantasy world of Hollywood. In fact, many of the homes featured in this book were commissioned by the movie folk of this era. This is a larger format book-- and you'll be glad it is when you see the pictures!

Customer Reviews:
Good Idea Book.......2007-08-23
This is a very good book if you don't have any ideas to connect the artist style with the book you are using - for an art project idea. You can find a similar book to use here and then copy the idea presented. When I purchased this book I thought it was going to be different. I had a particular goal I wanted to accomplish in my art class that I'm going to lead. But this book didn't supply me with what I wanted. I think it's a good book don't get me wrong; it's just it didn't help me in what I was looking for.
Some are fun..but.........2006-09-01
I was very excited about this book, but dissapointingly, it seems the kids aren't too interested in trying these out, at least the younger ones. Perhaps older children would be more interested (ages 7 and up)

Book Description
Artists constantly tell us that they need guidance for rendering skin tones in their portraiture. This book helps them overcome this elusive challenge by providing a clear set of easy-to-follow principles for painting a variety of skin tones in three major mediums--oil, pastel and watercolor. The first chapter is rooted in the basics, showing artists how to recognize and use the five major elements of painting: drawing, value, color, composition and edges. From there, artists learn how to work with light, shadow and color to effectively capture the beautiful skin tones of various ethnic groups, including Caucasian, Asian, African-American and Hispanic. Next, artists discover how to execute the principles learned, using detailed instruction for color selection, mixing and application. Four mini-demos, three long demos and many examples illustrate the lessons. Artists will benefit from advice on shooting and choosing photographs to paint, how to edit their compositions and work past their limitations.

Found the way.......2007-02-04
Great work for painters...
The book was ordered to find out what I did wrong in painting portraits in oil. Clearly instructed by the book I now improved my skills dramatically, especially painting eyes... with the look of love.
Not as useful as I had hoped.......2007-01-21
I happen to think the pictures in this book are beautiful. I wish I could achieve the same level of competence with color. By buying the book, I hoped to improve my ability to quickly make sound color choices, but try as I have, I just can't get the needed information from this book. I have purchased quite a few books on painting, and some have really helped me. The really frustrating thing is that it's obvious she knows what she's doing, but equally obvious she has a hard time communicating it.
If you already understood the topic, I'm sure you would get some comforting reassurance from seeing that which you have grasped reaffirmed. If you are not already a good artist, it's pure misery to try and figure out what she is saying. I have read every word and studied every picture in some cases 3 to 5 times, and I have taken little away.
I'm sure that if she were watching me paint, I would eventually understand what she is teaching, but I was not able to get much from the book. I did enjoy looking at the pictures, but the text is pure torture.
A need for an oil painter........2006-11-13
A very excellent reference book. A must for a novice painter.
Painting Beautiful Skin Tones: One of the Most Misleading Titles Ever.......2006-10-23
I agree with several of the previous reviewers. I believe that some of the writing on skin tones offers great insight. I also believe that most of the portraits in the book are garish at best. If there were Sears Portrait Studios around before the invention of photography there is no doubt that their portraits would look like these paintings. I would even be okay with that if it weren't for the fact that the book does not even begin to discuss skin tone until halfway through the book. I would say that 1/5 of the book is actually about skin tone. The rest of the book is just like any other beginners How-To. The basics of painting. Unfortunately there is little about skin tone.
Painting Beautiful Skin Tones a must for the portrait painter.......2006-08-18
This book is excellent. Well written, easy to follow. An abundance of information. Good color information and color wheels. I refer to this book in the planning stage of each portrait.

Customer Reviews:
In favor of truth in advertising.......2004-04-16
Mr. Torrone, in his 11/15/02 review of this book (below), presents himself as if in error, complicitous (with Amazon), or simply self-serving, as his assertion that "Amazon has a special ..." is 100% FALSE. NO "special"; rather, merely two books bundled together with no savings over separate purchasing. In addition, Mr. Torrone conveniently fails to mention the fact that *Flash Enabled* is authored by Mr. Torrone himself. In error? Complicitous? Self-serving? You be the judge.
Excellent book.......2003-04-05
After reading this book, I was VERY happy to have spent the money to pick this one up!
What struck me most, just from reading the table of contents, was the breadth of the content that is found in Flash: the Future. Not only is there information on creating Flash content for PocketPC 2002, but the book also covers Flash for Broadcast (DVD, iTV, and consoles), as well as the Nokia 9200 series. This book covers all of these topics extremely well. Just over half of the book devoted to developing content for the Pocket PC.
There are several different authors who contribute chapters in this section, and each authors' respective expertise in each different topic is evident throughout the section. For example, in each chapter you will find valuable tips and tricks that only come from such experience.
Flash: the Future is a well written and well edited title, and I strongly recommend picking it up if you are serious about Flash development.
Dare I give this book less than 5 stars?!!.......2003-02-25
This book is well written, and the author knows what he's talking about. However, I found he repeats things and often complicates simple things. After reading the chapter about PocketPC Flash technology I found it offered no more information than the Macromedia SDK (free on their website). He does offer some additional advice on PPC game development such as color and art optimization; common sense to most Flash developers. The book attemps to explain how to program a complete game in ActionScript, but does not elaborate on the details of ActionScript (ie: mentions the use of arrays, but doesn't explain their complex charictaristics). If your looking to learn ActionScript, this is not the book. Overall, this book has the advantage of being one of the first in it's catagory.
A no-nonsense, highly accessible, step-by-step guide.......2003-01-06
Collaboratively written by computer program and gaming experts Jon Warren Lentz, Bill Turner, and Ian Chia, Flash: The Future is a no-nonsense, highly accessible, step-by-step guide to creating content and applications for platforms such as handhelds, wireless devices, video/DVD, Pocket PCS, and more. Flash applications, Pocket Internet Explorer, Flash animations, ActionScript techniques, eMbedded Visual Basic, Microsoft eMbedded Visual C++, and much, much more are all deftly covered with illustrative examples and walk-through explanations. An accompanying CD-ROM contains code and examples drawn from the text, as well as bonus developer tools for the Pocket PC. Flash: The Future is a highly recommended addition to any personal or professional Computer Graphics/Design reference collection.
excellent companion to flashenabled!!.......2002-12-02
the book starts off listing various ppcs in comparison and then by goes through (in very good detail) the layout considerations to take when creating flash apps for pocket pcs. many aspects are covered in a way that's very easy to follow along with. a lot of this information will save you plenty of headaches down the road. softkeys (mapping of the device's cursor input) is covered in extreme detail and the source files for all of this is covered very well. c++ (etc.) wrappers are explained in detail so as to hide the ppc's menus, going fullscreen, and more. source code for these techniques are supplied as well on the cd. very valuable stuff. the code is explained in nice detail. classes in c++ and AS are covered in an appendix and are very worthwhile inclusions. transfering flash to television and dvd is covered in depth (and is a first in a book like this.) using flash animations in your dvd menu systems is shown in a step-by-step walkthrough. many of the perils of transfering flash to video/television is covered and workaround techniques are explained. the future of flash on devices is a running theme throughout the book and offers many great insights. the use of XML Socket, loadvars versus XML, etc. is covered. there is a wealth of knowledge to be gained in this well-paced book on the subject of flash on things other than the desktop. it's a bit more technical than flashenabled. the collection of the two books together == a 5 out of 5. these should be your flash device bibles when you want to get involved in creating apps and experiments to run on devices. WONDERFUL stuff. a defacto standard for mobile and other-than desktop Flash deployments. The CD alone is worth price of admission. And that chris pelsor is such a viking!
