5 out of 5 stars Small Houses of the Twenties: The Sears, Roebuck 1926 House Catalog.......2007-05-07

I have enjoyed looking through this book and the floor plans included. I was amazed at the sizes of the rooms compared to the sizes of rooms in homes now. It is a very interesting book and I would recommend it to anyone who likes looking at this type of book.

4 out of 5 stars Very nicely done.......2007-01-19

I used to have several of the original books of this ilk , and this is just as fun to read and view. The pictures are clear and distinct.
The subject matter is presented just as Sears and Roebuck originally did.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-03-18

After spending almost forty years as an exectuive with Sears Roebuck and Co. I enjoyed very much a precis well done on the informnation of their early nineties home building lines. The book is a valuble source of info.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for any Sears home-owner.......2006-01-06

As a recent purchaser of a Sears Honor Bilt home, this book has been very interesting and useful. It initially helped me to prove to myself that my house was a kit home, and has further assisted in returning the home to its orginal condition. If you live in a part of the ocuntry with some remaing 1910-1940 houses, you may be surprised how many of them are Sears homes. After spending many hours lookig through this book, I now notice Sears houses a lot more as I am out and about. Whether you are a potential Sears home owner or just soeone who appreciates the beauty and quality of older homes that seems to be missing from those we build today, this is a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting.......2004-02-27

If you are interested in homes that were built between 70 and 80 years ago, then you need this book. Imagine yourself as a young married person from the twenty's looking to build your first house -- the first place you might look is the Sears catalog. All you would need to do is buy the lot and lay the foundation. Sears sends everything else! The designs of these houses makes you wonder "why do people need such huge houses today?" This book is a must for anyone who loves old houses.

5 out of 5 stars Color Mixing.......2007-02-12

Very good for all types of artists. It even has inks for us printmakers!!!

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2004-03-12

I enjoyed this book very much. It was simple to understand and quite interesting. I'm sure it's not the end all in color mixing books, but it is not a bad one at all.

5 out of 5 stars A great book to start with.......2004-02-16

I've just started oil painting, and this book proved invaluable in helping me sort out the many, many different kinds of paint with their exotic names out there. I generally like to jump in and just experiment, but when I discovered the high price of good oil paints, I decided I needed a little book knowledge first. This book costs about the same as a good tube of paint, and saved me from buying many colors that, before reading the book, I didn't realize I wouldn't really need (at least to start with). It's one of clearest, most concise books I've read (on any subject). Every word is one of wisdom. If you're new to mixing paint, or having trouble figuring it out, get this book (it doesn't really cover HOW to paint though).

3 out of 5 stars A True Labor Saving Book.......2003-06-02

The first thing I always did with a new set of paints was create color swatches and mixes. Now that my paint sets are more expensive I hate to waste paint on swatches that I'll probably put in some "safe" location in the studio...never to be seen again. Here I can reference swatches of commonly used colors, opaque and transparent in a range of media. Sidaway also includes the best history of pigments that I've read to date - answering a question about phthalo blue that's been bugging me for years (when was it introduced? 1936.) This book is no substitute for learning about your palette, but does provide information on how to select an appropriate palette.

4 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2003-01-03

It covered the basics of color and technical terms "hue, shade, tint" It has a section about the history of pigments and dies and what they used to be made of that is interesting. One brown paint used to be made of ground up mummies. It discusses the mixing of color in many different media.

1 out of 5 stars old and crappy.......2006-07-03

This book is a bit outdated now.
The author of this book currently has a brand of his own paints and materials. He's so caught up on materials and your hands, that he doesnt teach to use your brain or eyes. He's one of those types that's obsessed with finding out the "secret" Maroger medium, the ratio of oil:pigment in old masters paintings, etc.
I dont know how anyone can think that using Raphaels' paints will make you paint like Raphael. It's like putting on Jerome Bettis' football pads and thinking you'll weigh 265 and run faster than a cheetah. It's not going to happen.

He's also big on slavishly copying photographs. I guess that's how a lot of illustrators think, though.

Compare this to books by the golden age illustrators; like Loomis, Rockwell, Leyendecker. . . even guys like Hogarth. They focus little on materials and "techniques," and teach more about learning to think and see.

In the end, you have to realize that Michelangelo could have painted the Sistine ceiling with a mop and a bucket of mud, and it would have been just as well done. Learn the basics of materials (which you can just find online), and find someone who will teach you to think.

4 out of 5 stars Adequate for non-users of listed materials:.......2006-03-16

I was primarly interested in the book for teaching students the finer points of using Gouache in Illustration. Although, there was nothing particularly new in the text about the material, it was all new to my students who found the material helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Good information.......2006-03-15

This is a good book with a lot of tips , but I belive that works good for beginners. Essential for beginners! But for advanced ilustrators a good book to fix some tips.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book, excellente for artists.......2006-02-21

the knowledge and in-depth shared in this book is excellent, helps you to go further in the techs, and with tips and trick for the materials and equipment. The only "but" that i find is that it's not a step by step teaching for beginners. Excellente book!!!

5 out of 5 stars True to it's title.......2004-01-21

So many self education books for artists claim to be definitive, comprehensive, or the only book you'll ever need. I don't know if this is the only book you'll need, but it is a cheaper alternative to paying tuition at an art college. And, unlike many how-to books (and some art colleges), Rob Howard gives very specific and detailed instructions. He's light on the motivational inspiration and heavy on technique. Afterall, a working illustrator (the book's target) doesn't need to get in touch with the inner artist, but rather needs tools to get the inner art out onto the client's desk.

Additionally, Rob Howard is quite talented. Often times people with Howard's gifts are so busy with paying customers that they don't have time to put together such a quality book. Every illustration is professional quality and an inspiration in itself!
The book is packed with photos and illustrations. He lists by name and sometimes manufacturer exactly what materials you need. Covers topics from Prismacolor pencils on Denril to Friskets and masking to pastels, acrylics and airbrushing....etc.

It's only weakness is that it's due for an update. First published in '92 before the internet explosion and before Adobe Photoshop and Synthetik Studio Artist became powerful enough computer based tools, this book focuses entirely on natural media. Just the same, an illustrator looking to set him or herself appart from the pack might want to set aside the software and use the proven techniques in this book!

5 out of 5 stars The Watercolor Bible.......2007-09-09

This is one of the best general information watercolor texts I've seen. I teach watercolor to adults, and this is the most thorough book I've seen. It covers technique, materials, design elements, color and much, much more. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book to experiement with.......2007-04-17

I first bought the book with a book club.
The artist's work is more into the realism aspect, but his skill is very matured in watercolor. He has included alot of detailed sketches and experiementation with this medium, and alot of visuals.
After reading it, one can't help but to try some of the stuff out.

If you are looking for a book to improve and learn the various technquies in watercolor, I recommand it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference.......2006-02-13

This is an indispensable guide. Mr. Garcia covers every aspect, and it seems to me that it would be an excellent reference for anyone, regardless of medium.

      Book Description

"John Lowden's impressive powers of analysis and interpretation have been fully engaged with remarkably fruitful results in this important study. His research sheds important new light on virtually every major aspect of each codex individually and on the Bibles Moralisées as a genre of medieval manuscript illumination overall. This brilliant scholarly work will become the benchmark by which all subsequent studies on the Moralized Bibles will be measured." — Jaroslav Folda, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

"One of the most important studies of medieval manuscript illumination published in many years, Lowden's work sets a new standard for interpretive codicology. In these two volumes, Lowden has laid the foundation for all future scholarship on the Bibles Moralisées." —Jeffrey Hamburger, University of Toronto

The Bibles Moralisées are by far the richest and most complex attempt at biblical illustration ever undertaken. Seven of them survive today, made primarily for the kings and queens of France between the early thirteenth and late fifteenth centuries. John Lowden's pioneering two-volume study brings new material to light and offers a wholly new approach to understanding the Bibles, which contain literally thousands of figures.

Volume I, based on exhaustive codicological analysis, considers the making and the later history of use of each of the manuscripts. Volume II investigates in detail the treatment of one portion of the Bible, the Book of Ruth, in all the manuscripts. Discussion is supported by many new photographs in color and black and white. Together the two volumes challenge conventional wisdom about both the Bibles moralisées and the relationship of word and image in medieval culture.

5 out of 5 stars a must for starting and not so-seasoned paintors.......2005-05-11

I have bought and reviewed several books on the matter and found this book to be very useful as a guide and reference book. It gives you a broadview of the more popular paintings techniques and guides you through oil, acrilycs, watercolour and pastels with useful advices on how to avoid more common technique mistakes, how to correct or lessen them and how to get some special effects. There are also valuable tips and craftstrade for paintings, thier care, traveling paintors, etc. I liked the way it is structured and the binding is nice too.

It is not a book to learn how to draw or compose a painting, but if you are concerned about how to avoid pitfalls or get good results in your paintings you should check this book.

In June 2003, the Three Gorges Dam opened and a reservoir the size of lake Superior began to form, inundating 372 miles of China’s Yangtze River Valley. As 1,500 cities, towns and villages disappeared beneath the dark waters, more than a million people were being moved. Around the reservoir, huge construction projects are still transforming the landscape; mighty dikes, long bridges, apartment towers, and sprawling cities are springing up.

Between 2000 and 2003 Linda Butler made eight trips to the Yangtze to photograph the people, the human environment, and the natural landscape before, during, and after these changes. She spent long weeks in the busy cities and remote villages. Lyrical photographs of dramatic vistas are paired with images showing the ravages visited on this region by coal mining and erosion. Intimate shots of interiors reveal the contents of homes and stores, a table set for an impromptu meal, or a shop counter scattered with seed packets and posters of Mao. Informal portraits of local inhabitants preserve a record of the people as they carry pigs to market, load all their household furnishings onto a boat, or play badminton on a village street.

Accompanying the images is the photographer’s travel commentary, which reads like a dynamic series of short stories. Butler’s words reveal the invisible stories of the common people as they struggle to come to terms with the destruction of their homes and lives. Since ancient times, the Yangtze River itself has been like an unpredictable neighbor—sometimes generous, but at other times wreaking havoc on the lives of others. Perhaps because the river people have lived near such volatility they have developed a profound resilience in the face of adversity.

Yangtze Remembered is both a measured and a passionate book. The powerful images reveal much that we have never seen before and cannot ever see again.

5 out of 5 stars China is Rising.......2006-05-31

Subtle, beautiful, honest glimpse of the most massive public energy project ever undertaken. Linda Butler captures the life and death of the people, commnunities, and cities that were sacrificed for this energy project.

If America is "addicted to oil" then China is addicted to electricity. In the past 3 years China has approved and is building more new coal fired power plants than the entire United States fleet. You would think that this massive hydroelectric project at Three Gorges Dam would appease China's hunger for new energy, but the reality is it's just a drop in the bucket.

This book does a wonderful job reflecting on what we loose when society progresses.

5 out of 5 stars This is a "must have" .......2005-04-08

As a person with a long-standing involvement in both photography and the professional evaluation of major energy projects in many countries (including hydro) I really appreciated the true value of this wonderful book.

To begin with, many not involved in this kind of work may not appreciate how politically sensitive it is. It took a great deal of courage and savvy for Ms. Butler to create the relationships and the entrees needed to make and exit the country with all those wonderful photographs and interview materials. This is no small feat in its own right. It speaks highly of her and also says alot about the growing openness of China.

Turning to the content, the quality of the photographs - in purely photographic terms - is superb. Lest we forget the power of black and white and the time-tested virtues of powerful composition, lighting and choice of subject matter, this is the place to recall them. Most of these pictures are not merely records - they are good photographs.

The captions and the text are very well done. This book is not a one-sided tirade against dam development. Rather, it is a sensitive, obviously well-informed and balanced perspective on the costs and benefits of these undertakings - both at an individual and more aggregate societal level. It is very clear from this book that there are winners and losers, progress and losses, and the actual long-term net result remains to play-out. This is reality.

There are important lessons of experience to be learned from this text. Let us not forget the scale of this enterprise. China committed something like six billions dollars to resettlement alone for over one million affected people. That a certain percentage of this money got misdirected through corruption and poor implementation is not surprising, and to the Chinese themselves - not acceptable - people are going to jail for their misdeeds. Ms. Butler faces these issues head-on and in a balanced manner. It becomes clear from reading this text that no matter how well-designed a project may be, the quality of the implementation arrangements and the structures in place for assuring their proper functioning are truly critical.

Finally, returning to the book as a production in its own right, the quality of the layout and printing are superb. Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking photography & the humanity of Three Gorges Dam.......2004-12-08

This amazing book by Linda Butler is a beautiful and heartbreaking look at the Three Gorges Dam project in China and the changing landscape because of it. The images are incredible and the text is haunting. The photographs are wonderfully reproduced and she has a great eye for capturing the subtle silence and the small nuances of the people and the landscape. Her vivid images document a changing China in a very intimate way. This text is a true photographic and historical treat!

Volume 6 of Banana Fish is full of suprises, the largest (to me) being that this is not the final volume of the Banana Fish series. (I thought it was, and was quite surprised when I encountered the dreaded "... to be continued ...") Of course, this means that there is more of Amiki Yoshida's wonderful story to come, but it still came as quite a surprise.

The time has come for Ash to face his enemies once and for all. Papa Dino and Arthur have captured everyone he holds dear to use as toys in their own particular brand of torment for Ash. Run-of-the- mill torture won't suffice for Ash's enemies, however. They have other plans; plans that involve the mind-altering drug code-named Banana Fish. Forced to do the unthinkable, Ash is ready to die himself, when he receives help from an unexpected ally.

While Ash is plotting his escape and revenge, Ash's and Shadow's gangs are making their own plans to storm the Golzine mansion. As for Arthur and Dino, they have some very special guests to entertain...

An exciting story that moves at break-neck speed, Banana Fish Volume 6 continues Akimi Yoshida's gritty story of a New York gang youth who never wanted anything more than to live his life and solve the mystery behind his brother's past. While I was disappointed to not see the culmination of the sage in this volume as I thought I would, I am eagerly awaiting further installments to the tale.
