This extraordinary, massive, and mind-boggling 1,300-page book combines essays, manifestos, diaries, fairy tales, travelogues, a cycle of meditations on the contemporary city--and complex illustration--with work produced by Koolhaas' Office for Metropolitan Architecture over the past twenty years. This almost overwhelming accumulation of words and images illuminates the condition of architecture today--its splendors and miseries--exploring and revealing the corrosive effects of politics, context, the economy, and globalization. In some ways, this is the "Medium is the Message" of 1990s architectural discourse: guaranteed to be hugely influential in the coming decades, but grossly misunderstood by those who have not read it. The core arguments it makes about metropolitan architecture--accepting complexity and lack of centralized control--are similar to those of Kevin Kelly's Out of Control: The New Biology of Machines, Social Systems and the Economic World. Very highly recommended.

An acquaintance had a copy of this so I looked through it during a dinner party. Blah. Bah! It's full of facetious, egotistical monoliths (from the edifices to the book itself) that offer nothing but themselves to the rest of the urban experience. Le Corbusier of the late 20th century. Gawd, I hope Koolhaas doesn't take that as a compliment.

Realmente atendeu as expectativas. Um belíssimo livro em um bom preço e no prazo de entrega informado.

So much information that it took too long to get through it before most of it wasn't relevant any longer.

There's a terrific line in Breakfast at Tiffany's. George Peppard proudly hands neighbor Audrey Hepburn a copy of his just-published book. She has no idea what to do with it, so she puts it on a shelf next to a vase, backs away and says "Doesn't that look nice?"
This book is a lot like that. A self-conciously designed object for the homes of style consumers who already have the right clothes and the B&B Italia furniture. A prop for the still-life they want to inhabit. If they ever got around to "reading" it, they'd discover to their great relief... it's NOT a book to be read in any strict classical sense.

It also reminds me of a New Yorker cartoon where one associate asks another, "Read the first few pages of any good books lately?" The age of the short attention span is not going away any time soon. This hefty grey slab is easily recast as the shiny new headstone for verbalized intelligence.

As Kracauer holds it, there's nothing wrong with framing a culture via fragments, but I have plenty of qualms about advancing one's own ideas that way. And I'm suspect of ideas that trowel on style in the abundance seen here. If I could believe Bruce Mau's intentions were more than just trying to look new, (This 'look' now permeates architecture publications) I'd have more respect for this, but it was obviously calculated as a totem of style and style-suffusion.

For better or for worse, the book got noticed, the industry was distracted by the pretty surfaces and the ascent of Koolhaas is a done deal.
If you want to actually READ a book full of Koolhaas' thoughts, skip this and get a copy of Delirious New York.

5 out of 5 stars S,M,L,XL.......2003-09-18

Possibly one of the many great books on architecture of today with plenty of references and clean graphics. A must have for all architecs or if you just want a wonderfully beautiful book for your home or office.

From the supplier: A highly debated issue in the field of physical education is how much freedom students should be given in designing and selecting the games and activities to be included in the elementary physical education program. Some educators believe that children should be empowered to invent meaningful experiences and movement activities. Others argue that child-designed programs will be less effective than instructor-designed programs. There are also those who claim that child-designed activities should be moderated by lessons designed and modified by the teacher.

            1 out of 5 stars not worth 5 bucks.......2005-08-04

this is book is an insult, it will teach you nothing.

1 out of 5 stars Save yourself the shipping charges..........2005-06-02

And just run a $5 bill through your shredder rather than wasting your money on this "simple to the point of being useless" book. If you really feel compelled to throw $5 at someone to essentially go through your owner's manual with a highlighter, this is the book for you. But if you expect to learn anything from this book that you couldn't easily find in the owner's manual or elsewhere, you'll be very disappointed.

I have some advice for you that I feel is far more valuable than any "insight" that this book provides. That would be that if you're such a novice as far as photography is concerned that you'd benefit from the extremely basic and simplistic insights provided by this book, you really should set your sights quite a bit lower camera-wise than the Digital EOS Rebel. For example, if you don't know the definition of depth of field (a very basic concept in photography for which this book provides a definition), this camera is probably way too complex for you in the first place. As they say, you need to learn to walk before you can run. Do yourself a favor and get a much simpler and less complex camera to learn on... there are many of them out there that have a much more appropriate feature set for the novice photographer that can still allow you to take great pictures and to grow as you learn. You can always trade up to a camera this complex if and when you've gained enough experience to benefit from its features.

At the same time, invest in a book that can provide truly valuable information and insight for the digital photography novice, such as "Digital Photography for Dummies". I can't imagine that there are too many people out there who aren't familiar with the "Dummies" series of books. But just in case you are, they're the perfect choice for the person who might say the following to himself or herself... "I'm really interested in learning about digital photography, and I don't know the first thing about it." The Dummies series are loaded with everything the beginner needs to know about the topic (such as, what is depth of field and how do I use it to take better pictures?). They always use a very light-hearted, "tongue-in-cheek" approach that keeps you entertained while you're learning the basics. Such a book does essentially everything that the book being reviewed fails to do.

The cover says "Only $5 - Really!" Well, a low price on something that provides as little value as does this book is no bargain. I think they rely on this "it's only $5" mindset to get you to purchase the book without any careful consideration. That's what I did, and had I not been rushing when I ordered this book, I would have taken the time to read the sage advice of Dr. Sunny and D. Penrice, who wrote reviews in the past to try to warn me and others that this book is a waste of money. Now I join them in trying to warn the rest of you.

If you're looking for a book to help the beginner, save the $5 that you might spend on this book and invest it on the slightly more expensive, but far more valuable "Digital Photography for Dummies". That will be a far wiser use of your money.

3 out of 5 stars Free Learning center for Digital Rebel.......2004-12-17

Here is a link from the Canon web site to the Canon digital learning center for the Digital Rebel (300E). It contains basic info about this camera. I found it helpful. Best of all, its free!

1 out of 5 stars Not even worth 5 bucks!.......2004-08-24

I thought this book would help understand how to change the settings (Shutter speed, F stops etc) quickly on the Canon Rebel, instead it shows you the very very basics of how to change picture types (Auto, P, Macro), format your CF card and very simple other things.

I would stick to the manual which shows you just as much and more then this book and save $5.

Yoh Asakura is a shaman--one of the gifted few who, thanks to training or natural talent, can channel spirits that most people can't even see. With the help of his fiancée, Anna, Yoh is in training for the ultimate shaman sports event: the "Shaman Fight in Tokyo," the once-every-500-years tournament to see who can shape humanity's future and become the Shaman King. But unfortunately for Yoh, every shaman in the world is competing for the same prize¿

5 out of 5 stars Great volume of a sorely underrated manga series.......2006-11-12

I have read all 32 volumes of the original Japanese Shaman King story, and have also followed the English translations since my brother started subscribing to the English translation of the Shonen Jump magazine. I must say that I find the English editions completely satisfactory, besides the fact that they don't have the original sound effects (fine by me). Having said that, here are some opinions on this volume of the manga.

To start off with, the art is very good. Takei's style is highly stylized and angular, with some freakish characters that may turn off a few readers. Otherwise, the crisp, sharply contrasting black-and-white artwork is original and applied with skill.
If you are jumping into the story with this volume, you may be a bit confused. I recommend starting the series from the beginning. I'll assume here that you have read everything previous or at least know the main characters:
The story in this volume begins a dramatic turning point in the story. After the resolution of the conflict between Ren and his father (I won't spoil what happens!), Yoh and his shaman friends prepare for their trip to America for the second round of the Shaman Fight.
A highlight of this volume for those of you who are reading/have read the Japanese version as well is that it contains a controversial, perplexing scene involving Yoh and Anna. While only slightly suggestive of anything, some fans speculate that it proves Anna to be the mother of Hana Asakura (Yoh's son in a short story created by Hiroyuki Takei). Otherwise, most of the time fans will tell you that the short story points directly to Tamao Tamamura as the mother. Completely interesting topic.
Then, after these preparations and the last night with friends and loved ones, the shaman depart for the U.S. You'll be happy to see the comical, brief appearance of Silva and the rest of the Patch tribe in this volume, and to become aqcuaintanced with HAO HIMSELF!
The collection of chapters closes with an ending that hungers for the next volume, and ends completely with a cute little short showing Manta Oyamada after his best friend(s) leave for America.

Overall, I recommend this book to anyone even slightly curious about Shaman King. This series, stopped short in Japan for questionable reasons, well deserved to go on. It is complex--full of lovable characters representing many cultures, packed with satisfactory action and humor, and at times, it is even a beautiful, thought-provoking story. Read the story from the beginning, and you'll be happy you did.

Ok, here in the latino paradise I live in, there are no comics or books or nothing of Shaman King, only T.V series. Are there T.V series os SK in the states? Anyways, the names are somewhat different too, what you all call Asakura Yoh is "Io Asakura", his spirit that's with him, which in spanish is called "espiritu acompa?ante", is named "amidamaru". Then what's his face, no idea what his english name is, the dude with the the one-spike on his head, his name is "Len Tao", spirit? "Baz-n". Blue haired guy, "Horo Horo" (dont know what name his spirit holds but she keeps saying: cucurucu!), the gay guy, "Ryu". 'Lizer", the green haired guy, fairy's name is "Morfin". "Ana", "Io"'s girlfriend. "Manta", "Io"'s best friend, the little guy. And the cheetah kid, the one that tells jokes, "Chocolo" is his name, and he wants to bring: "la brisa de la risa". 'Jun Tao", "Len"'s siter. "Horo Horo"'s sister? no idea. And anyways, there weren't anymore series after Io finished with Hao (twin brother). So! not really sure what the other characters are! except for "Los soldados X", the group Lizer joined ages ago, with the leader princess character, "La Doncella"!

5 out of 5 stars More Shaman King Goodness!.......2004-05-16

If you haven't experienced the power of Shaman King yet, this second volume may or may not be a good place to start, but for all you action-buffs out there, Volume Two is right up your ally.

Starting after Yoh's fight with Ren, the reader is treated to a flashback to when Yoh was a young child and how he becomes obbsessed with his goal to becoming the Shaman King. We also get two new characters added to the already likeable cast: Anna, Yoh's strict and bossy fiancee and Jun, Ren's older sister who controls the corpse of famed action star Lee Bailong. Again, we are treated to another impressive battle with lots of hard punches, kicks and ghostly matches.

While this volume is basicly one big action-packed fight, a lesson is taught and learned (a common theme, no?). Still, one cannot admire and praise the art, story and characters that has put Shaman King on the map. More of the main character's personalities are revealed and Manta truly outshines Yoh in this department. While in the first volume he is shown as a wet blanket, he proves that this wet blanket has a strong backbone and will do anything for his friends! He proves this by risking his own safety while requiring a replacement sord for Yoh by getting into a fight with Ryu. Hey, what are friends for?

For anyone who became a fan through the anime, give the manga a go and see what you have been missing. For those who are already a fan of the manga, sit back and relax and take in all the action of this volume!
