Book Description

• Rich, warm, relaxed, natural—Adirondack camps, Western lodges, much more • Glowing photos of dozens of unique rustic homes from across North America • Spotlights craftspeople and creative forces in construction and décor • Great idea book for anyone looking to design or decorate a primary or second home

Used to be that "rustic" meant a dusty, dumpy cabin in the woods. No more! Rustic Revisited reveals today's rustic—contemporary design that celebrates the honesty of all-natural, local materials such as wood, twig, stone, and bark. Rustic structures often have the same finish on the exterior and the interior—for example, rough-hewn timber on both the outside and inside. The homes in Rustic Revisitedembrace the hand-crafted philosophy of rustic and show how to take that philosophy to new heights in a variety of styles, from the Adirondack camp to the Western lodge to the classic log cabin. Thirty unique homes, most planned by architects or interior designers, are showcased here, each lavishly photographed to allow readers exclusive access to interiors, exteriors, and noteworthy details in unusual rustic houses from New York to California, from Montana to Ontario, from North Carolina to Minnesota. These homes cover the full spectrum of rustic—renovations and new construction, traditional and cutting edge. A bonus chapter on decoration spotlights the craftspeople who are the creative forces of the movement.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book........2006-06-27

What a great book! I bought it to give as a gift and ended up keeping it for myself. It's filled with beautiful photos of rustic style in all its forms: including Adirondack camps, lake houses in Wisconsin, Western lodges and Southern cottages just to name a few. I got many good ideas from it, and will be buying more copies to give to friends. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Living in Rustic Luxury.......2007-04-04

Great pictures pair with many ideas for turning your house into a rustic dream home.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful photography of the ultimate cabins.......2007-03-22

Wonderful photography, well written chapters, and many, many decorating ideas. My wife and I really enjoyed this book. We decorate our home in a rustic style, and hope to have our own cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains one day. However, a better title for this book might have been "Cabins of the Rich and Famous"; these aren't the little cabins your grandparent's owned, or those that most people could afford.

It is a great coffee table book if this is your area of interest, and will inspire you with building, design, and decorating ideas.

This is an excellent book on the topic of the adirondacks and adirondack home. Ralph Kylloe always does a fantastic job with pictures and text. It was a very worhtwhile purchase.

5 out of 5 stars A marvelous look at western luxury homes.......2006-01-18

There's nothing "rustic" about these luxury ranch homes, and the word "cabin" is definitely a euphemism. The houses are as big and gorgeous as the settings they reside in, and the author's photographs capture both. If you want the vicarious thrill of seeing how the rich spend their summers in Montana, then book is for you.

Look inside this book at a bookstore before you buy it. It is NOT about cabins but about huge lodges-log mansions, if you will.

Book Description

Take a tour through twenty-five modern log homes reborn in the Arts & Crafts tradition, and witness how Craftsman style combines with the latest in log hybrid architecture to create a totally new and unique genre of building in The Arts & Crafts Cabin. In this new title from log building expert Robbin Obomsawin, the rich Arts & Crafts heritage of the late 1800s that rebelled against mass-produced goods and the opulence of the Victorian era melds beautifully with the ideals of log home design and cabin living, where a simple life and appreciation for fine craftsmanship are held in the highest esteem. This new hybrid style incorporates the exquisite workmanship and sophistication that have become hallmarks of Arts & Crafts design with the warmth and comfort of log elements to create homes inspired by nature, creativity, and simple beauty. With one of the industry's premier photographers, Roger Wade, and the log industry's most prolific and respected author, Robbin Obomsawin, The Arts & Crafts Cabin uses spectacular color photography, floor plans, and compelling historical text to showcase how the principles and philosophy of William Morris, Gustav Stickley, and Charles and Henry Greene combine with modern artistry to create some of the most exciting residential and recreational architecture being created today. Robbin Obomsawin is the construction manager and general contractor for Beaver Creek Log Homes. Robbin has served as vice president of the International Log Builders Association for Handcrafters and is the author of Small Log Homes, Best Log Home Plans, The Not So Log Cabin, and Log Cabin Classics. She lives in New York State.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A lovely book with a few good ideas.......2007-07-23

I purchased The Arts & Crafts Cabin for my wife for Christmas, as we are building a new home this year. The book is chock-full of beautiful photographs by Roger Wade, who is the preeminent "log cabin" photographer, whose work graces most of the timber-frame and log-cabin oriented publications. The text is well-written but not particularly memorable. You buy this book because it looks lovely, and it is a favorite flipper on our coffee-table this summer.

There are a great many more interior images than exterior elevations -- a minor disappointment because we were at least as interested in gleening good ideas for exterior design. This book has many more yellow stickies marking pages than any other in our collection, so that tells you something.

Great photos and alot of great info ; I don't want to blow my own horn , but, toot, toot!!!!
I have two of my stained glass creations in this publication. I was very surprized my work was included in this great book. Thanks to all involved .

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas for building an Arts & Crafts-inspired log or timber framed home.......2006-10-01

This is an incredible book! This book reminded me of my trip to the Canadian Rockies - but not because of the architecture. There, every time I drove around a curve, the scenery was more beautiful than before. The same is true about this book. Every time I turned the page, the photos were more inspiring. And it wasn't just the photos. The book itself captured the spirit of the Arts & Crafts style. The quality of the photos, the layout of the pages, the selection of fonts, even the binding of the book showed craftsman-level attention to detail.

The book begins with the history and concepts of the Arts & Crafts movement and then shows and discusses new interpretations of the philosophy. The next section discusses ideas for incorporating key elements of the style such as sheltered porches, built-ins, and much more.

Note that this book does differ from some of Robbin Obomsawin's other books. Most notably, she does not fully explore a single house in each chapter. You will not find floor plans of the houses discussed - something I missed but that didn't fit this layout. Also, remember this book is titled The Arts & Crafts CABIN. That does not necessarily mean log cabin. There are several examples of log homes but with a stronger focus on log-element homes with more of a timber-frame feel. But many of the ideas can work in a pure log home - at least we hope to incorporate many of them in our log home.

3 out of 5 stars Misleading but beautiful.......2006-08-17

Being familiar with some of Robbin Obomsawin's other books, I bought this book expecting detailed house plans and handcrafted log architecture. After all, it's called "The Arts and Crafts ***Cabin***," right? And the picture on the front of that beautiful stained-glass door shows logs, doesn't it?

Well, this book is beautiful. You'll drool over the pictures. but a planbook it's not. And a log-building book it's not. And none of the residences here would qualify as a "cabin," most are opulent estates. There's nary a plan in the entire book. And almost none of the houses shown are built with logs as a primary element. Most are timberframes; many pictures show no log elements at all!

If you want to learn a bit about Arts and Crafts architecture or decorating, you may find some ideas here. But if you are designing a floorplan for a handcrafted log home and want it to have an Arts and Crafts feel, unfortunately, this isn't the right book.

4 out of 5 stars great resource for timberframe and log accent building..........2005-09-14

I liked the quality of the photos. The detail design pictures were especially helpful. I also liked the links to the resources. I would recommend this book to others who have an interest in timberframe and arts & crafts design.

5 out of 5 stars Camps and Cabins review.......2006-02-22

Beautiful coffee table book. The pictures are large and there are many of them. The focus of the book was on the Adirondack style mostly and birch Adirondack style furniture.

5 out of 5 stars Invinting.......2005-09-26

This book is a banquet for the eyes. The reader feasts upon the visuals and is drawn into the rooms, the homes, and one can almost smell the wood.

The author knows his subject and shares it well. I keep my copy on the coffee table in the living room as a wonderful accent to the room.

It reads well and I am intrigued as to who the owners might be of the wonderful houses, homes, structures. Privacy is very important, but that is my only "complaint" with the book. I would like to know who the owners are. It would seem more personal.

The book is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Cabins & Camps.......2003-10-21

This is by far the best cabin/camp book I own! Pages and pages of gorgous camps and cabins with wonderful decorating. I own many rustic decorating books and this is tops!! All Ralph Kylloes books are great but this one is the best! The pictures of inside all the beautiful camps and cabins is a true feast for the eye! I look at this book at least once a week and never tire of the homes and always put the book down with more ideas on how to make my home more rustic and adirondack/camp like. I can't imagine if you are a person that is into camp decorating that you would ever be disatisfied-it is truely the best of its kind!!

Book Description

We live in an age when technology moves faster than we do, where noise levels are high, air is polluted - and our homes are often in the center of this frenzy. No wonder we want to escape and be free. With irresistible photography by Chris Tubbs, this book is about making that wish come true. As Jo Denbury and Ali Watkinson show, your hideaway needn't be large or grand; it needn't be far from home or expensive. What is important is that it is an expression of yourself.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed in Nebraska.......2007-08-22

This was a large disappointment. Soooo many pages taken up with nothing on them but a photo of sky..... earth....etc... and where are the photos of Cozy cabins and rustic retreats? An old Airstream...? Gushy wordy, fluffy, puffy.I found it a feeble attempt at "poetry"...or something other than great cabins and retreats. Many, many wasted pages. All attempts at sizzle and no steak. Wish I had left it at the seller's. Also, the cover was different than what it shows here. It looks like a book on cabins and cottages, but its focus is not there.

5 out of 5 stars A fine survey of cozy cabin interiors .......2006-10-15

Lovely color photos by Chris Tubbs accompanies a fine survey of cozy cabin interiors and decoration schemes which make the most of small and rustic spaces in Cozy Cabins Rustic Retreats. The idea here is to customize a personal sanctuary: chapters are filled with insights supporting this concept and provide ideas for a range of styles and designs, from log cabin rustic to giving the illusion of airy expanse in limited places.

      Book Description

Somewhere at the dawn of our history, a wolf lay down by a Cro-Magnon campfire and the first intimate relationship between animal and human was born. As the millennia passed, we learned to harness the tireless speed and strength of horses and matchless hunting and herding skills of dogs, and thus became the dominant mammals on the planet. We continue to employ and rely on animals to this day, not only for the many heroic and utilitarian services they perform, but also for the peerless companionship and unconditional love they offer.

PEOPLE I SLEEP WITH documents this very special bond between some very special creatures, both domestic and exotic, and their beloved human guardians. This powerful collection of images is by turns poignant, provocative, and whimsical. It is impossible not to marvel at the mastiff and the boa curled protectively around their dreaming boy. Or smile at the sensitive hen snuggled up to her girl, the inky embrace of the tattooed gentleman with napping poodles, or the dapper, delicate scorpion and his dozing young friend. Each photograph captures the effortless intimacy between species as they sleep, sometimes tenderly intertwined, sometimes not even touching, yet always quietly, undeniably connected.

5 out of 5 stars Charming, touching book of photographs.......2005-07-17

Jill Fineberg, a successful professional photographer recently retired to New Mexico, assembled this collection of portraits that illustrate the unique bond people can have with the animals that share their lives. Not all of the subjects by any means are actually asleep with their pets (I don't really see how one could sleep with a gecko or scorpion anyway) but many of the shots display a no less remarkable level of intimacy and trust, for example the dust jacket illustration of a man balancing bareback on his horse, or the couple posing with their lion and tiger. The pictures are followed by the frequently touching stories of their subjects and an afterword about the proven health benefits of having animals around. Fineberg shows us that in reaching out to creatures not like ourselves we can only become more human. The only regret one can feel perusing this charming collection is that the book as a whole could not have been larger, to present the frequently beautiful photos in more detail.

      5 out of 5 stars People I Sleep With Not a Sleeper.......2005-05-13

PEOPLE I SLEEP WITH?! The title and an eye-catching dust jacket cover should make you stop and look at this book at least twice. when you pick it up and turn the pages, you'll discover that photographer and writer Jill Fineberg loves animals. Hers sleep on her bed. So she took her camera and pen and went looking for other folks who loved their four-legged and feathered friends as much as she did. Then she photographed the people and their animals-or maybe the animals and their people, judging from the book's title--at their most intimate and vulnerable moments-sound asleep together. The result? A tender, funny, warm, and loving set of essays and absolutely stunning black-and-white photos called PEOPLE I SLEEP WITH. I don't want to describe too much for you--except to say that in this tender document of peoples' relationships to their animals, each photo has an essay telling something about the person and the animal in the picture. Many make you laugh. Others make you think. Some wrench your gut. But if you're an animal lover like me, or a photographer, or both, Man (Woman) or (Child), you gotta have this one. PEOPLE I SLEEP WITH is a teriffic coffee table book.

      5 out of 5 stars like minds.......2005-03-01

Jill is a photographer who truly understands the importance and therapeutic value of a person's closeness with their pet(s). It shows in her work and in her writing. Bonding with another living creature, not a human, is something really special. Thanks, Jill, a beautifully illustrated and sensitive book.

5 out of 5 stars A frontier of profound intimacy.......2005-01-24

Books are important when they push a paradigm shift to a point of clear recognition. It so helps to have two hunded photographs to make such a solid case for the profound relationship people and animals share. For many this will be an aha ... and a happy one. Jill Fineberg knows the depth of such relationships and therefor her keen eye knows who and where to go to get real evidence of these bonds. The book sat on the altar of my cats recent demise and now is a coffee table joy for all the visitors who stop in.
