Book Description

This thought-provoking book presents a compelling argument for moving architecture from a part-by-part, linear approach to an integrated one that brings together technology, materials, and production methods. Using examples from several industries that have successfully made the change to an integrated component approach, these visionary authors lay the groundwork for a dramatic and much-needed change in the building industry.

* Packed with graphics that illustrate how and why change is needed
* Examples from the auto, shipbuilding, and aerospace industries illustrating how to improve quality while saving time and money
* Redefines the roles of architects, materials scientists, process engineers, and contractors

4 out of 5 stars Looking Inside Out.......2004-11-02

The overall strength of this work is the reminder to architects to look outside their field for inspiration, investigation, and implementation. Process is approached as beyond just "design process" to physical fabrication methodologies in various industries and the architectural conclusions are drawn from a comparative perspective.

The initial theme seems to be interpreted as a mechanized approach void of craft but upon further digestion the intention is to celebrate craft in architecture, the approach the authors have taken in practice.

I applaud the efforts to take what could have been a quite cumbersome topic and distilling it in a concise and intentional way.

2 out of 5 stars Uneasy Transposition.......2004-03-23

In this book, the authors compared the present construction process of buildings to that of the automobile, ship building and aerospace industry. This is not new (remember Towards a New Architecture?). While Corb's book talked about end products, this talks about processes. Indeed, the authors presented some impressive research evidence on how the building construction industry can learn from these neighbors by sharing many common features of process and final product between industries.

However, what is not clear as an example, is the articulated, and perhaps even necessitated need for a building to emulate the joint tolerances of a car or an airplane. While the latter can sometimes determine the life and death of the user, a "half-inch tolerance" on a hospital facade will occur over the "millimeters" simply because there is no pragmatic need for such an emulation. This is, of course, not even an excuse for the lack of craft, but a statement that there should be a real need presented before a necessitated manifestation in form to occur. One simply should not look over to the greener pastures for the sake of doing so. The book is peppered with many such unclear determination and one has to really specify what kind of architecture does what, in a rather blunt way, before assuming with this pretense that emulation is good. Spirit of the Age has erred twice now over the raison d'etre.

The second major criticism for this book is the uncritical constant comparision between the building and the . As much as I can appreciate the way automakers think of creative ways to make money from us, the allegedly "creative" folks through the streamlining of the process, a car differs vastly from a building because of context. Sure, context is too well hyped these days but surely we can speak the same for a plane or car in any context but we cannot do the same for every building we make. A car is driven in Asia or Europe but a building, as the authors noted, does not move very much. Context, therefore, as well as the ill-defined problem space of design is the problem here.

Thirdly, one cannot talk about refabricating architecture without commenting on the economical, labor structure of our society. Who are the conceptual workers of this industry? What is their wage and labor structure like? We simply cannot compare industry to industry on such a macro-scale because some fundamental aspect, though microscopic at this scale, dictates much of the process. The automobile or aerospace engineer can streamline their methods compared to architectural designers because of a marked difference between their wage, working and corporate conditions. What about forms of insurance, legal laws governing these different industries? All these are "form-makers" of the design process too. One cannot proceed to such an unbridled admiration of other design processes without at least commenting on these discrepancies.

The only salvation, in my opinion, of this book, remains to be the salvation of an architect's vision (architects, in this case of two authors). The very last part of the book displayes what modern architects are trained best to do, a marketable vision, possibly manifested in physical or representational format. While this remained as one of the rare books out there to tackle difficult topics of architectural process and methods, it needs a rigorous rework and editing (and perhaps peer review) before what is simplistically presented can be deemed as a useful reference for folks out there who is trying to do what the authors intended.

As a last reminder, F. Brunelleschi had the might of the Medici's empire backing him when he invented the cranework or the shell of the Dome. One simply cannot compare singularities in history with the challenges that the small to medium size offices face in this country everyday.

(The author of this review is not an Architect, but is interested in design in the larger context.)

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2004-01-30

Once again, Stephen Kieran and his firm has put out a great book on Architecture. He has totally transformed modern Architecture and taken it to another level. Seeing his work first hand is truly a treat for those of you interested in this field. A gold Medal - Congratulations !

Book Description

Millions of people have learned to draw using the methods of Dr. Betty Edwards. Now, in an essential companion to her bestselling classic, Edwards offers readers the key to mastering this art form: guided practice in their newfound creative abilities.

Here are forty new exercises that cover each of the five basic skills of drawing. Each practice session includes a brief explanation and instructional drawings, suggestions for materials, sample drawings, and blank pages for the reader's own drawings. Also provided in this spiral-bound workbook is a pullout viewfinder, a crucial tool for effective practice. While The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain focused primarily on portrait drawing with pencil, this workbook gives readers experience in various subject matter-still life, landscape, imaginative drawing-using alternative mediums such as pen and ink, charcoal, and conté crayon.

For all those who are taking a drawing class, who have already received instruction through a book or course, or who prefer to learn by doing, this volume of carefully structured "homework" offers the perfect opportunity to reinforce and improve their skills and expand their repertoire.

5 out of 5 stars Build Drawing Skills easily.......2007-01-26

This workbook is a great companion to Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. We bought it for my teenage son. It provides nicely guided lessons to give directed practice in drawing. The lessons are laid out well. I like that the drawing area is large enough to encourage exploration and expression.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Practice Book.......2007-01-25

Buy the text and the workbook, do the exercises and see your drawing improve.

5 out of 5 stars Drawing made easier.......2007-01-16

My grandson and I are just starting to work through this book. He is really excited about it. I think it makes sense! While my grandson is only 12 and this is not a childrens book, with our working together it makes my job of teaching possible. I had not had lessons myself and am learning as I teach. I can't wait for our next session.

5 out of 5 stars Making a difference.......2007-01-10

I would say this is one of those book that just gets your brain moving forward and into new spaces of the drawing dimension. Unfortuately my art teacher in high school never used such a high calibre but easy to understand book, otherwise I would have gone a longer way on art courses. But it is never too late, now is the time to start. I am half way through the book, and I am impressed with my results already. What is most important is that you now know what is stopping you is not "natural ability", but time and effort.

Book Description

Keith Carter's photographs linger in the mind like images from an almost remembered dream. Evocative and haunting, they capture what Carter calls the "little askew moments" that allow viewers to see beyond the surface reality.

This book brings together seventy-five photographs chosen by Carter to represent the range of his work since the 1970s. Many of the images in this book have never been published before, while others come from Carter's previous books. A. D. Coleman's introduction traces the development of Carter's work and maps his affinities with other artists and writers who are strongly influenced by the sense of place. In his own words, Keith Carter describes his maturation as a self-taught photographer in his hometown of Beaumont, Texas. He provides insights into his choice of subject matter, his methods of working, and his philosophy of what art should be and do.

For the many people who have already discovered Keith Carter's photography, this book offers a visually compelling summation of his career to date. Those who have not yet had that pleasure will find it here.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-11-07

There is a refreshing love and respect for the subjects of the photographs in this book. A real find.

5 out of 5 stars Help Keith Get a Engine and buy this book.......2001-05-24

This is a great collection of images from his books...I have it on good authority that Keith has a speedboat and can't afford the motor. He has the captain's hat, blue blazer, white pants, and a red sparkled speedboat with no motor. If you buy all of his books, Keith can go boating on the water instead of his driveway. His lips are swollen from making that motorboat sound. His wife is tired of spraying the hose at him to simulate waves. The neighbors are starting to talk. You will not regret owning this book. It's well designed and full of terrific images. Remember to get the rest of his books and unleash Keith on the water's of Beaumont,Texas.

2 out of 5 stars Wake Me When It's Over.......2000-04-04

After looking over this compilation of Carter's work which spans twenty-five years, I've come to the conclusion that his photographs are much like froth on beer: pleasing to look at, but lacking in substance. Keith Carter's recent technique of using bellows on his Hasselblad and manipulating this to cause portions of the photograph to be out of focus, is similar to any gimmick a photographer might use to enhance their images. The question of whether the same manipulated image would still be interesting if Carter hadn't used this technique, is what we should ask. The answer is "no", for the same reason a pinhole camera can be used to make an ordinary subject appear different and therefore, cause the photograph to achieve a level of interest that wouldn't be achieved by conventional photography. This recent technique of Carter's can easily be a metaphor for what he deems, "the poetry of the commonplace." What Carter neglects to understand is great poetry - like the best photography, is never in need of further enhancement. The book begins with his earliest and best work. The solitary images of a toy airplane on an unmade bed, an empty theatre, and a fence in an abandoned playing field find their strength in the delicate simplicity they intend to capture. These are the photographs that come closest to poetry, due to the photograph's strength being conveyed through straightforward mood, and not manipulation. As the viewer follows chronologically through this book, it becomes apparent how Carter uses premeditated set-ups and posing to achieve the final image: a man with a butterfly in his mouth, two children holding blocks up to their eyes, and `mud lovers' are no different than posed, studio shots. This style of photography is fine and Carter's images are pleasing, it's when he calls these same images poetic, when they are merely contrived, that causes one to raise an eyebrow in suspicion. Twenty-five years in the life of a photographer is not a long time. Hopefully, Carter will return to the approach of his earlier work and achieve the poetry he currently lacks by going back, instead of moving forward. Then he will truly be documenting "the poetry of the commonplace". Until then, he's merely documenting the mundane.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......1999-03-05

Keith Carter is not only a great photographer, he is a great teacher. He has inspired many of us in south-east Texas not only through his photographs, but through his outlook on life. In this book you can see what I have come to recognize as Keith's true gift - his enthusiasim. He is a great photographer, but much of his talent is owed to his love of what he does and what he photographs. His books, like Keith himself, are truely an experince not to ever be forgotten!

4 out of 5 stars A mystical trip through the realms of childhood.......1998-09-23

I met Keith Carter while he spoke in San Francisco. He is a soft spoken gentleman from the South. His photographs are etherial and mystic in their effort to convey the memories of a childhood. Mr. Carter invites us back into a life in the south, when wadding in a pond - looking for fire flies was something very special. His portraits of dogs, children and towns all show us his world of East Texas through eyes that loved the pace, the flavor and the smells of down home. Mr. Carter really does share this lifestyle with the viewer as you look anew upon "common" buildings and animals with new eyes. You will not be sorry to see and read Keith Carters work.

Mother Goose on the Loose is a must-have resource for librarians, early childhood educators and all who work or live with young children. Whether you are new to the field or have years of experience, you will gain practical, research-based information about developing minds and a treasure trove of ways to enrich them.
The program descriptions in the manual are ample and clear. Combine this with the enclosed CD with its songs and instructions and you're ready to go! I have used many of Betsy Diamant-Cohen's ideas and Barbara Cass-Beggs' songs in my Born to Read library programs and they work because they are simply so right for this age. Parents tell me with delight how they hear their 18 month olds reciting rhymes and singing our songs over and over again at home.
I enthusiastically recommend Mother Goose on the Loose and sincerely thank Betsy for this outstanding manual she put together for all our babies and toddlers who are growing and learning so fast and deserve the very best from us.

This resource is a no-brainer purchase for librarians, teachers, and day care workers. But parents (and grandparents!) should pick up a copy too. This would make a great baby shower gift for new parents. The author writes with the authority and intelligence of someone with a PhD, the experience of someone who has been a practicing librarian for years, and the sensitivity of a mother. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised (after surfing around on the web) to discover that Betsy Diamant-Cohen actually is all those things! No wonder this is such a great resource! Highly recommended.

For those who haven't seen it in action or heard Betsy Diamant-Cohen speak about it, Mother Goose on the Loose is a dynamic
program based on infant brain research. The program is built around nursery rhymes but includes so much more--music, movement, language, social skills, caregiving tips (and yes, picture books). Ideal for practitioners such as librarians or day care providers. Text is clear, concise, easy-to-read. Includes CD!

The nursery isn't just for children anymore!

Pity poor Humpty Dumpty. He's had a great fall but..."He's in an HMO. Get some of the King's horses and a few of the King's men." Witty and irreverent, these cartoons from The New Yorker take a hilarious second look at our most beloved childhood stories and rhymes.

More than 80 selections by such legendary artists as George Booth, Leo Cullum, James Stevenson, and Jack Ziegler--including several cartoons never before published--are accompanied by the original nursery rhymes. The introduction by editor Bobbye S. Goldstein provides a brief overview of the history of cartoons and explains their value in encouraging older children to read and comprehend irony, satire, perspective, and--of course--humor. For readers of every age to enjoy.

Compiled and edited by Bobbye S. Goldstein, Mother Goose On The Loose With Cartoons From "The New Yorker" is a humorous and engaging satire of the classic mother goose nursery rhymes. Chuckle-inducing, thought-provoking cartoons and caricatures spoofing the adventures of Little Bo Peep, the Cow that Jumped Over the Moon, and many more as well as amusing variants of the rhymes themselves comprise this highly enjoyable parody. "When Jack climbed up the beanstalk / A mean giant he did meet, / So Jack slid down the beanstalk / And made a fast retreat!"
