Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dream Book.......2006-06-27

This book will set your imagination on fire and motivate you to turn your ordinary backyard into a mini-paradise. Lots of pictures to drool over, you will find yourself thumbing thru it again and again..

4 out of 5 stars Outdoor Rooms.......2004-07-28

This is a great "thumb thur" book. It has really nice pictures of outdoor areas that are very "architectural".... Not helpful for the "average joe" looking for ideas to create your own backyard/outdoor patio/room.

3 out of 5 stars Great for Entertaining Types.......2002-02-28

If you need ideas on how to create outdoor spaces for entertaining - this book is for you. Dining, lounging, dining, lounging... Even different photos of the same patio have different place settings on the tables to give you dining ideas. After a while, I began looking for spaces where you could do something other than dine, or lounge. Overall, nice photos of nice outdoor spaces, but limited appeal.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh ideas, lots of variety, great mixing of materials.......2001-04-17

When looking for fresh ideas and inspiration on how to create the prefect outdoor space you needn't look any further than this book. From a modern symmetrical porch to lush English gardens, it showcases a wide range of styles. With so much to choose from anyone can find something to suit their taste.

Many of the outdoor rooms have pools. It is amazing how they manage to flawlessly integrate the pools into the environment without making them seem out of place or just thrown there. The magnificent outdoor spaces truly become a part of the home.

I love the combination of styles and how they compliment one another. One room features the creamy white walls of Greece, a timber roof and hot Mexican colors in a cushioned seat. Large color photos tell the story with brief descriptions of each example.

In the back there is a sampler of fine furnishing and accessories form a variety of different styles including historical, rustic, Mediterranean/island, and geometric. There is also a helpful directory of design professionals, photographers and product sources.

3 out of 5 stars If you love concrete & steel, this book is for you!.......2001-04-04

Or if you love browsing Swedish furniture catalogues, buy this book! Unfortunately, I'm not a big concrete & steel fan or heavily into Swedish furniture. It's a lovely book but if, like me, you're looking for garden inspiration or expecting visions that incorporate trees and plants, look elsewhere and save your money. The designs for outdoor rooms in this book left me cold. I gave it a reasonably good rating because I realize that readers who love modern architecture will probably enjoy it.

    Book Description

More than a book, this is a bona fide publishing event. The largest-ever collection of New Yorker cartoons features the best of every decade in book form, plus two easy-to-browse CDs--Windows and Macintosh compatible--with every cartoon ever published in the magazine--more than 68,000 of them!

Since its founding in the 1920s, The New Yorker has had a profound cultural impact on the country and the world, and has almost singlehandedly elevated the cartoon to an art form. For the first time ever, EVERY cartoon ever published in The New Yorker is collected in one place.

Accompanying the cartoons in the book, several thousand of them organized chronologically, are essays by eminent New Yorker writers reflecting on the life and times (and sense of humor) of each successive decade. Additionally, each decade includes profiles and mini-portfolios of the cartoonists who made their marks on the era, from Peter Arno and Charles Addams to Bruce Eric Kaplan and Roz Chast. "Theme" features cover such subjects as Drinking, The Depression, and Politics.

The two accompanying CDs feature every cartoon ever published in the magazine in a format that is accessible on any home computer and is browsable by date, cartoonist, subject, and more. This groundbreaking book, several years in the making, has been lovingly compiled by current New Yorker cartoon editor (and respected cartoonist and author) Robert Mankoff, and the foreword is by David Remnick, the magazine's esteemed editor.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful book but massive!.......2007-09-28

Have enjoyed the New Yorker since I was old enough to turn the pages. This book is a "real history of our times" in addition to being a pleasure to read. Depressions, wars, politics, and general attitudes are shown with all their "warts and wrinkles". This is a wonderful book, but read it sitting at your desk, or kitchen table, or some other sturdy base. Take several days to go through it, (at the very least), since cartoon meltdown is a real possibily if taken all at once. Aside from the "reading logistics" it's a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Cartoons for the "literati" - buy it for the CDs.......2007-09-10

A book with 6 decades worth of wry New Yorker cartoons needs a strong coffee table and a big lap. Flipping through the book gives you a wonderful look at the flow of current affairs, both social and political. Along the way the editors give us a narrative that's a good course in the history of American humor in the 20th century.

The real bonus, though, is not the book, which despite its being massive is not "Complete." It has maybe 20% of the 60,000-plus cartoon promised on the cover. The complete set you want is on 2 CDs included in the book, and the CDs are searchable by topic, etc.

So if you want a cartoon on consultants (and I'm a consultant), here's one: Two detectives stand over the prone lower half of a murder victim. "By the number an violence of the stab wounds," says one, "I'd guess he was a consultant."

Buy the book so you can open it at any point and smile or laugh out loud; use the CDs to browse the whiole New Yorker cartoon universe and/or find the smiles and laughs you want.

5 out of 5 stars DVD and Book are fantastic.......2007-08-15

I had been apprehensive about this purchase after reading the reviews rubbishing the quality of the resolution on the DVD. I was surprised to find however, that the resolution of the cartoons is fine. Occasionally I will have trouble reading the finer print, but with 72,000 of them, it doesn't really matter.

5 out of 5 stars I have never seen the book.......2007-07-18

It was a gift I bought for somebody else, but the person who received it, took picture of it and she was so happy with the book that I have to rate it 5 stars. Maybe I will buy one for myself too...who knows.

5 out of 5 stars The Cartoons are great! CDs are awesome too..........2007-07-08

I wanted to clarify some doubts about the resolution of the cartoons on the CDs. They are perfectly fine and don't know how it can be better. The CD contains cartoons in pdf documents, and there is one cartoon per page. Each cartoon is dated and has the cartoonist's name. I didn't find any problem at all. I am using Adobe Acrobat reader 7.0 and Windows Vista OS. The CD couldn't directly launch pdf which I suspect is because of Vista. Hence, I just opened mainmenu.pdf directly from adobe acrobat reader and was really happy. Please go ahead and buy this, the CDs are not low resolution.

    Book Description

A visual feast of swingin' cartoons for jazz lovers. On the long road to becoming an Oscar-winning animation director, Gene Deitch became an intense jazz fan. At the age of 21, he discovered The Record Changer, a jazz collector's magazine filled with fanatical, scholarly, and purist essays about jazz as well as listings of hard-to-find jazz albums. Every jazz swinger in the '40s was called a cat (as in "cool cat," derived from the West African word "Katta," a human), so Gene Deitch created a cartoon feature for Record Changer titled "The Cat," which quickly became a fixture at the magazine. He also started drawing the covers, which graced almost every issue from 1945 to 1951 along with "The Cat." Deitch's stylistically virtuoso images exquisitely embodied the essence of jazz and became a visual paean to the joy of collecting and appreciating jazz.

In the 1940s, jazz was a vaguely disreputable musical genre and Deitch's visual embodiments of the music acquired a cult; to this day, his original Cat cartoons are bought and sold on the internet.

Fantagraphics Books is proud to collect all of Deitch's Record Changer covers and "Cat" cartoons in one coffee-table, landscape-format art book, reproducing his covers in the same gorgeous colors in which they first appeared as well as the black-and-white Cat cartoons and a commentary by Deitch—who later went on to become an award-wining animator as the Creative Director of CBS/Terrytoons, where he created Tom Terrific and Mighty Manfred the Wonder Dog for The Captain Kangaroo Show, as well as many other animated features, including a legendary stint on MGM's "Tom and Jerry" series. Fully illustrated throughout; 90 pages color.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Cat is Back.......2003-06-19

Great 1940s comics that capture the world of the jazz fanatic circa 1945-1950. Deitch's artwork is clever, original, somewhere between Virgil Partch and Harvey Kurtzman -- far above the amateurish efforts one associates with fanzines. Anyone familiar with the loonier aspects of record collecting will find much amusement in these cartoons (The Cat berates one guy searching a huge pile of records with, "That's the 'A' master which is relatively common!"). Deitch also drew some interesting covers, reproduced here in full color. Anyone into vintage comics, records, and/or jazz will dig this.

The packaging is a bit overkill. The width of the book is huge, but there is a lot of white space on the inside pages. A smaller size would not have detracted from the artwork, and would have made this a more affordable book. Also, nobody seems to have proofread the copy, as there are quite a few typos.

    5 out of 5 stars Beyond Fantastic.......2003-06-06

This book gets seven stars. At first, I think I thought it had something to do with Mad Magazine, like Spy Vs. Spy. What I found was a goldmine. Rarely do I see books dealing with geeking out on something. Gene Deitch clearly loves Jazz Music. This book documents a dope artist, blossoming into greatness through an interest in an outsider sound. His honest comments on obsesive geekdom, as well as race relations, are appreciated. A super cool gift, as well as a beautiful, beautiful book. the OilCan highly recommends.

2 out of 5 stars Not the greatest book.......2005-05-31

This book had a lot of examples but I feel it didn't teach how to draw them that much. It showed many funny caricatures but it didn't really give me any thing to work with.

5 out of 5 stars Bob Staake has another winner!.......2000-04-23

This book really is the best thing a Caricature artist like myself can have in his libary. Crammed with tons of drawings by both Mr. Staake and dozens of other artists, there's definitly no shortage of examples in this brillantly illustrated book. However, this is not your traditonal "step-by-step, this is how to draw" kind of book. Rather than directly teaching you how to draw caricatures, Bob Staake explains in great detail all the important aspects of caricature, such as how to incorporate the subject's personality into the drawing and what are the best reference materials to use while drawing. Truly a must have for ANY artist.

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......1999-11-03

I had heard this was the "definitive" book on Caricature, and a truer statement couldn't be made! My goodness, this book is absolutely incredible. The caricature samples are diverse and inspiring, the presentation well designed, but Bob Staake's text is just marvelous. Doesn't matter if you're an artist, cartoonist, caricaturist or just a casual reader, this book will have you hooked from the first page. Can't possibly over-recommend it -- truly the most complete book on the art form of caricature.

As the Iditarod's official photographer since 1981, JEFF SCHULTZ has documented this amazing combination of frontier spirit, physical endurance, and human-dog connection in a stunningly beautiful and sometimes brutal landscape. In IDITAROD GLORY we see the best photos from a man who has dedicated himself to this race for twenty-five years, and who nearly lost his life one year in a plane crash on the job. His evocative photographs capture all aspects of the race from the pre-race frenzy on 4th Avenue in Anchorage to Burled Arch finish in Nome. Rare, behind-the-scenes photos that only the official photographer could manage, are also included.

5 out of 5 stars One second to the next makes you a hero.......2007-03-03

Wow. After 29 years it is still vivid to recall those 2 guys neck 'n neck pulling their teams down Front Street in Nome. I woke to the radio alarm clock to get ready for my shift at the airport and heard they were inside of Safety (22 miles East of Nome). I got up and out of the apartment and walked down to Front street, and low and behold, there they were, stumbling, tugging. It was a bright, clear, cold day and the dogs looked so tired! What a hullabaloo that morning!
Mackey relives this and other moments in this book and he brings it all back. Thanks, Dick!

              3 out of 5 stars Mackey Attacks.......2005-02-12

Mackey sums it all up: " People who are content to stand still irritate me. I feel the same way about people in every profession... always try to improve your work... try to be the best you can be."

This is a record of accomplishments of one man who came from New Hamphshire. He was a young, successful entrepreur until an accident changed his life...bankruptcy. He was young, married and a father. He lost it all... but not for long. " I knew nothing about Alaska, but it was as far as I could drive."

Alaska is a better place for men like Mackey. He has left his mark as a Iditarod Hall of Fame. The founder of Coldfoot, AK.
and the list goes on and on.

Mackey, you brag a lot... but it's not really bragging... you did it.

              4 out of 5 stars Self-made man's public autobiography.......2004-02-18

A well written and extremely entertaining autobiography of Dick Mackey who won the Iditarod Race in 1978 by a second. In some ways, the book almost read like the history of Iditarod and as the founder of Coldfoot, Mackey probably won his place in Alaska history. I regards this more like public autobiography because Mackey mostly relates to his public life. What seem to be missing are stuff about his personal life outside of few mentions of his kids and his three wives. It would be bit more interesting to know the man behind his accomplishments and the cost.

But overall, I highly recommended this book about an extraordinary Alaskan who did extraordinary things. As a fellow Alaskan, I hope there will be more chapters to come.

This book was so cute and fun!!!! I loved it!!!! Marron is such a sweetie!!! This book starts out with the Sorcerer Hunters on a mission, and it ends in the same fasion. The book has a bit of nudity, but it's not completely hentai or anything. The characters Tira and Chocolat are a bit sexy by it's cute.

              5 out of 5 stars Marron RULES!.......2001-09-03

Ok, ok ... It's obvious I'm a Marron fan. (Hee-hee ... It's hard NOT to be one!) But that fact proves that I liked this manga! So let me tell you why.

It's funny! I'm an upperclassman in High School and I made the regrettable mistake of bringing this book to class ... Ahem, let's just say I'll be the only one remembered for laughing during a lecture on Maslow's hierarchy of needs ... But ah, I digress. Back to the review! It was so hilarious (in a a PG-15 rated kind of way) that it was a really hard task to stop laughing! (Poor Carrot ... Always getting wacked by Tira's mallet ...)

The story itself is amusing. The plot revolves around three main characters, namely Carrot, Marron, and Tira. These three are the Sorcerer Hunters, employed by various Parsoners (people with no magic) to liberate them from sorcerers (people with magic and upside-down triangles on their foreheads ... hurh?). Anyway, their boss, Big Mama (yes, that's her name) is the one to send them on their missions. The first volume is divided into six "chapters," if you will. In "Enter the Sorcerer Hunters," Carrot Glase, a skirt-chasing zoanthropist (zoanthropy is his power), Marron Glase (his GORGEOUS younger brother), and Tira Misu (the Carrot-tamer) are on their first mission, helping out a girl named Leila Barton and attempting the figure out the mystery behind where the "noble" Count Regnasis has sent the Parsoners' daughters and why they haven't contacted their families. (Can't tell you the end.) In "The Magic Flower Rod," they are trying to discover who is behind the many Parsoner deaths in Colintos City. There, they also try to help the cowardly Brinks Kerny, who allowed his girlfriend to play detective and spy on a suspect. In "Dark Water," Parts 1 and 2, they try to stop a crazy guy who's trying to "rescue" his sister, Rin (who ironically asked for the Sorcerer Hunters' help to rescue her brother). Carrot is lured away by a hot babe in "Pretty Flowers Also have Thorns," a chapter where Tira faces another whip-wielding lady like herself. "The Terror of the Crystal Magicians" is about Sorcerers that capture Parsoners into magical crystals by using their fears against them. In this chapter, our three main characters are joined by two other sorcerer hunters, Gateau Mocha and Chocolat Misu (Tira's sister, a little too nude for her own good--but, a girl that Carrot DOESN'T want to sleep with?!) But it's only Part 1, so you have to get the second volume to see how that story ends!

The translation was really good (Mixx, I applaude you!) and there were no spelling errors I could find, so if grammar is THAT important to you, you have nothing to worry about with this manga.

Ok, if you're not bored out of your mind by my weird, repetitive summaries, let me finally tell you that not only is the this manga funny and interesting, but it's also skillfully and beautifully illustrated by Satoru Akahori and Ray Omishi. If you don't buy for its humorous story, at least get it for the artwork! If you buy this manga, you won't be unsatisfied. (However, mind that there is adult humor and some nudity, so if you're under 15, maybe you should wait awhile before getting it ...) Just learn something from my experience and don't bring it to class!

P.S. When you buy this book, you'll have to agree: Marron RULES!!!

5 out of 5 stars Cute and Funny.......2001-04-13

This is really good story about a group of people trying to rid the world of evil sorcerers. Carrot, Tira, Marron, Gateau, and Chocolat are the sorcerer hunters. It's funny in an adult sorta way.........but the characters are cool and so is the story line....a must read

              5 out of 5 stars hilarious parody!.......2001-03-03

Having watched the entire anime series, i was excited when my friend picked up this manga, since the anime is supposed to be more..um..tame. ^^; Several people have commented on the generic plot, but i would like to point out that this is done on purpose. This is anime/manga making fun of itself. And done really well. It takes all the usual stuff--from a young man and friends saving the world to the more taboo hentai/shounenai themes--and tosses them all together in a wonderfully ridiculous way. You can't help but fall in love with the characters and their eccentricities! It's so funny. Marron and Milfy are my faves. Marron is smart and sweet (and gorgeous!) but dangerous if you mess with his brother. Milfy, whom I won't tell you about because you're in for a big, hilarious surprise, might not be in this volume, maybe the next. can't remember... But no worries. If you read this one, you'll definitely read the next one! I love Bakuretsu (Sorcerer) Hunters!

5 out of 5 stars Best comedy ever!!!!!!!.......2001-02-03

This is one great joke after another. Carot, one of the men of the group does let his title down, he's always hitting on some girl. And Marron is just a hottie! Tira is the coolest out of the lot, not even the other girls will ever compare to her. I say let everyone read this and enjoy the humor of it!!!!!!! buy it today!!!!
