4 out of 5 stars Good book for information on natural materials.......2006-02-24

This book is helpful if you want to know how to use and care for natural materials in and oustside the home. There were some good photos featuring modern interiors but not very many photos relating to modern retro, as I had hoped for. I would recomend this book to anyone wanting ideas on using different types of natural materials for their home.

If you are new to Japanese brush art work and want to learn the technique, this is the book to start with!

5 out of 5 stars Not a beginners book.......2007-01-05

If you're a beginning Sumi-e painter you might want to wait on purchasing this book until you're more comfortable with the basics of brush loading and color gradiation.

This book tends to avoid going into detail about the intricacies of brush loading and the importance of your paper quality and it's absorbency.

If you are a beginner looking for a solid book that explains in alot more detail the four gentlemen and the importance of your brushes quality and methods for loading the brush, buy "Japanese Ink Painting: Beginner's Guide to Sumi-E" (Paperback) by Susan Frame. It's a marvelous book with alot of great examples and step by step instruction as well as some history and excercises you can do to become more comfortable with your brushes.

Personally I am also interested in using colour in my sumi-e works, this guide only has black and white. But the images are just beautiful. Hope I reach that level soon!

After exactly two lessons in watercolor and an appetite to learn more precise brush strokes I purchased Sumi-E. I immediately was able to make headway using the carefully written examples shown in this lovely book even without purchasing the precise Japanese brushes. I highly recommend it.

Book Description

Sumi-e is the classic painting style of Japan, and its graceful simplicity is admired around the world. A natural follow-up to the best-selling The Sumi-e Book, The Sumi-e Dream Book demonstrates how to take the classic brushstrokes of sumi-e to a new level of painting, where creativity is inspired by deeply felt memories and spiritual expression. First, sumi-e artist Yolanda Mayhall provides a brief history and explains the philosophy behind this classic Japanese painting style. She highlights its many masters, one of them her ancient mentor the master brush painter, woodblock, and dream journey artist Hokosai. Next, she reviews the classic materials and the basic brushstrokes of sumi-e known as the Four Gentlemen: Bamboo, Wild Orchid, Chrysanthemum, and Plum Branch, along with their variations. Finally, Mayhall puts it all together to demonstrate the sumi-e art of dream journey painting. Readers will learn a variety of creative and exciting techniques for using color to add a delightful dimension to the sumi-e image as well as discover exciting techniques for visually capturing important life memories and spiritual reflections in a painting.

3 out of 5 stars The Semi-e Dream book.......2007-05-12

Its ok but I thought it was going to be more step by step and its not. Good book thow.

3 out of 5 stars A Bit Shallow.......2006-11-11

Very nice pictures and some good description on Sumi-e dreamjourney painting. However, as an artist looking for more detailed explanations on techniques, I was quite disappointed. If I was just interested in general ideas on this type of painting the book would be great, but as an artist I was disappointed in the way the material was presented. For example, loading the brush was glossed over.

3 out of 5 stars Good paintings, but not sumi-e.......2005-01-19

This book might be interesting as some artistic approach to make paintings. the paintings are not bad. But they are not sumi-e. They are rather aquarelle, that mimics eastern paintings.
IMHO the key thing, that makes Yolanda paintings look different is her technique of brushstokes, which are very typical to the western aquarelle school. The original sumi-e brushstrokes are based on brushstokes of chinese (well, and japanese as well) calligraphy, and this is one of the characteristics that variate paintings of differnt masters.

Still, the book text is a good transcription of sumi-e/brush painting concept. Just for the painting examples I'd suggest to look at the works of the "original" artists.

4 out of 5 stars A real "dream" for those interested in Sumi-e Painting.......2004-04-09

Being an afficionado of Chinese Brush painting, I was intrigued when I first saw this book. I'm not easily impressed by art books, and I've reviewed hundreds over the years, but this is one of those books that actually surprised me. It really is a dream for artists intersted in the brush painting of China and Japan. Here's why...

Mayhall's style is both beautiful and spontaneous, and the imagery in this book is breathtaking. What is really refreshing about this book, however, is that it isn't just another *how to* brush technique book. While she does go into great detail on history, materials, technique, and subject matter, the artist puts you into the mindset of a Sumi-e artist. Rather than simply show her readers "how" to paint, Mayhall encourages them to begin their own journey into Sumi-e "dream" painting, and equips them with the knowledge necessary to find their own artistic voice. She states, "it is not only the subject that gives life to art, it is the spirit that is within the artist's genius." Well said!

Material covered in this text includes:
* Chapter 1 - A Brief History of Sumi-e
* Chapter 2 - Studying the Dream Journey Painters of China and Japan
* Chapter 3 - Starting on Your Own Dream Journey (tools, brush strokes)
* Chapter 4 - Practicing the Four Gentlemen (bamboo, wild orchid, chrysanthemum, plum branch)
* Chapter 5 - Beginning the Creative Process (incorporating the four gentlemen)
* Chapter 6 - Learning Advanced Brush Strokes for Birds & Flowers (Yo birds, iris, hummingbirds & its flowers)
* Chapter 7 - Internalizing the Three Essential Elements of Sumi-e (creativity, composition, color)
* Chapter 8 - Planning the Journey (sketching, structure, Exploring new techniques, beginning your dream journey)
* Chapter 9 - Dreaming (more ideas & demonstrations)
* Chapter 10 - Enhancing Your Dream Paintings (calligraphy)

If you're interested in the brush painting style of China and Japan, or would like to incorporate these techniques into your watercolor and/or ink painting, I recommend this book along with "Chinese Painting Techniques for Exquisite Watercolors" by Lian Quan Zhen... two excellent books to inspire you and bring your own artistic dreams to life.

5 out of 5 stars Friend and admirer.......2003-07-17

As a long time friend and collector of Yolanda's beautiful paintings, I was overjoyed to see her latest book. I have found it to be not only well organized and illustrated but written in a style that is easily understood and followed. The inclusion of historical and contemporary works accompanied by poetic translations elevates the instructional format to a book to be cherished for its contribution to understanding the mysterious and ancient culture of Japan.

5 out of 5 stars Scholarly yet functional.......2001-04-27

This is not a simple "how to" book. First, Shozo Sato brings together masterpieces of Japanese and Chinese ink painting to show examples of its history and its traditional patterns of composition. Then he explains in words and in clear black and white photos the basic brush techniques.

I value this book highly because I am currently taking a class from a wonderful traditional Japanese teacher whose English is not so fluent. She teaches by demonstrating without more than a few words of explanation She paints a lesson in my book: bamboo, wisteria, wild iris, for example. We spend our class trying to replicate her example for brush strokes, design, variety of ink values.

The author of this book writes in detail about what I am seeing first hand in class. He explains Japanese terms and philosophy and also introduces some contemporary sumi-e artists with examples of their work. This is over 300 pages where the art of black and white triumphs.

            Book Description

A facsimile edition of one of the "classic" photography books. Elsken focuses on the Left Bank of Paris in the 1950s-a time when it was recognised as a centre of creative ferment which would determine the cultural agenda of a generation. With its unconventional, gritty, snapshot-like technique the work has been acclaimed as expanding the boundaries of documentary photography.

5 out of 5 stars Gritty Noir Look at Amour Among the Demimonde.......2001-02-04

"It was the autumn of 1956. That night I had made love to Ann for the first time." Thus the narrative begins in this facsimile edition of the great 1954 fictional story of Geri, Ann, and Manuel on the Left Bank of Paris.

Think of this story as the illustrated version of Kerouac's "On the Road" for the bohemians from abroad living in Paris at the same time.

Anyone who has visited Paris has seen the young people living in cars, sleeping on the Metro and on park benches, and panhandling while enjoying the dubious pleasures of illegal drugs and the inspiration of great jazz. Well, it was like that in the early fifties, too, as this book so brilliantly displays.

Before going further, let me caution potential readers that the book openly discusses sexual topics (including sexual transmitted diseases), drug use, theft, and other crimes. No one will find this book as an exemplar of "right" living. In addition, some of the photographs are sexually suggestive or involve partial nudity. I have rated this as a five star book for its photographic essay and accompanying text. I would have rated it very low for the lack of morals that it projects if that were the basis of my rating.

Like "On the Road," this fictionalized account is based on real people. The central figure is Australian Ann, an artist who lived with Geri. Mexican Manuel met Ann through Geri, even though Geri eventually fell in love with him. The author followed these young people through Paris for months to capture the brilliant moments of their lives, and added a spare commentary to tie it together.

Ann had orange hair and black around her eyes. "She danced like a negress" in the jazz club where Manuel first saw her. When Manuel told her that she said, "Thank you. I'd like to have a child by a negro. They are so elegant. Gentle and restful, too." Manuel reports, "I fell in love with her."

Over the course of the book, Ann takes many lovers and her relationship comes and goes with Manuel. So he is always on the outside looking in. This is literal as well as figurative, because he was often living on the streets while she had a place with Geri.

The photographs are the heart of the story. And they tell a dynamic story indeed of a vibrant and fascinating young woman who easily drew others to her. You will see the power of her personality and attractiveness in almost every image. Men stand straighter and move in languid circles to match her every twist. You can feel the pounding jazz and the self-confidence that take turns in animating her.

Her power over Manuel is intense. She eventually starts going with an American sailor. When the two of them go for a meal, Manuel is jealous and eats in the same restaurant in order to watch them. Unable to pay, he is arrested and spends two months in jail. He is sure that this has impressed her. The photographs capture the American and the jail where Manuel is sent in equally powerful images.

Ann's artistic work is nicely captured in a series of images that feature her work in progress as well as finished canvases.

Each of the photographs is very dark, often with graininess that suggests seedy surroundings -- which these were. The compositions are both complex and spontaneous. It must have taken remarkable patience to capture both simultaneously.

Part of the book's appeal is that it will make you feel quite young, and remember how intensely you felt at that age. The book is remarkably effective in that way.

After you finish enjoying the book and its noir environment, I suggest that you think about how the energy and intensity of youth can be directed into more constructive pursuits. What challenges can be made to be as much fun as partying nonstop in Paris cellars while great jazz pounds? Obviously, whatever you come up with should be sure to include its own fair share of partying, to celebrate important progress. I wonder if working for Habitat for Humanity abroad or doing missionary work could hold or be made to hold this kind of appeal. What do you think?

Live vividly with every cell of your existence . . . in pursuit of a worthy cause!

            5 out of 5 stars New information!.......2000-09-28

Melbourne, Australia, September 2000. I have recently been sitting at Vali Myer's feet, listening to her marvellous stories about the people and places she lived in Europe from the late 40's. She set me straight about some things that appeared in "Love on the Left Bank" Her name was never "Ann" although she was married to Rudy Rappold, her name has always been Vali Myers! So, sorry for my mistake in assuming Ann had been Vali's name, it never was!

5 out of 5 stars Love on the Left Bank.......2000-08-22

This beautiful facsimile edition of "Love on the Left Bank" by Ed van der Elsken, (originally published in 1954) is a photographic narrative of the artists, writers and other creative characters that gave the Left Bank, Paris, its distinctive bohemian flavor. Through Ed van der Elsken's evocative black and white photography we participate in the cafe and street culture of the famous "Latin Quarter."

Ed van der Elsken's photographs have been exhibited in Paris, the Netherlands, London and New York. In "Love on the Left Bank" its impossible not to notice his adoration of Ann, "the girl with orange hair who danced like a negress." She appears throughout the book., with her entourage of men. The camera follows her intimately, like a jealous lover, into the bedroom she shares with a girlfriend, to the bars and cafes where she dances passionately, and glancing over the shoulders of her friends and the many men who swarm around her.

Van der Elsken gives us this rare opportunity to see the young Vali Myers, (formerly Ann Rappold) who is now recognized world wide for her amazing and magically intricate paintings, first begun whilst she was living hand to mouth in Paris in the 1950's. Some of Vali Myer's earlier drawings are also included in this unique book, which is yet another reason why it is a must for collectors of art and photography.

4 out of 5 stars haven't seen the series, but..........2003-06-12

This was a pretty good book. I've only read two other volumes, the first and the second. The first volume confused me utterly, because it doesn't start in a way that's very good for people who have never seen the series before (the "series explanation" is more confusing than enlightening). However, since that first volume, I've gotten to like these books much more. The art's great, and occaisionally there are some really funny moments. This book has some more Minagi scenes, which I thought was great since she's one of my favorite characters at this point. And, since I gather from the other reviews I've read that Minagi probably wasn't in the original series, I'll just say that she's sort of a second Ryoko, with a different personality. A good read. I recommend it, but it would probably be good to read one of the earlier books first, so that things aren't so confusing. That's this series biggest problem, I think. It isn't always very clear about things, and there's never a little section at the beginning explaining who all the characters are, like you see in other manga series.

4 out of 5 stars Read the ones before-hand first........2002-07-02

I decided to buy a Tenchi book, so I got this one first because I like Ryo-Ohki, and because she was one the cover, I got this one. I was really confused to what was happening (2 Ryokos?) So until I got the first couple of books, I started to get what was going on. But the stories are what you would expect from a Tenchi story. The whole series of books is like watching another series of it on TV, except you don't feel so lazy reading it.

4 out of 5 stars And story goes on.......2000-07-02

The continuation of the storyline from book 4 "Samurai Space Opera". Having picked up a powerful but gentle monk, our crew freed from the Mines and the Harem, continue on to rescue Asahi's father. The real question-just WHO is the actual evil MasterMind?

5 out of 5 stars No Need for Tenchi!.......2000-03-22

All I can say is this book shows Unreal Genius! I love the whole Tenchi Muyo series (i just bought the OAV), and all the characters are great. Sincere Minagi, naive Asahi, and the incredibly cool 'shima brothers. The arts great too, I love these books, I've got all the availble six (when do the others get released State side :( P.S What is it with Washu and villians, huh? I mean Kagato, Dr. Clay( Tokimi too), Yakage, and now Yume. Yeesh!

5 out of 5 stars Great addition to the series!.......1999-08-23

The latest novel of the Tenchi Muyo! manga series. Taking place somewhere in the second season of the OAV, this is a wonderful addition to the comic series.Great characters, action, humor, and a good plot that ends in a cliffhanger for part 6!
