Book Description

In recent years, mid-century modern furniture, glass, ceramics, and textiles have become hugely popular among those who appreciate the stylish contribution these pieces make to the contemporary home. Modern Retro will inspire you to create a look that combines modern classics by such visionaries as the Eameses, Bertoia, and Aalto with thrift-store finds and the best contemporary design. Created by modern classics dealer Andrew Weaving and design commentator Neil Bingham, with photography by Andrew Wood, Modern Retro is not about slavishly recreating a period feel. Instead, it shows how to take the best designs of the 1920s through 1970s and use them throughout your home in a relaxed and individual way, allowing you to make the most of the gloriously eclectic forms, colors, and patterns available.

3 out of 5 stars Inspiring and accessible.......2002-06-14

Since I already have a few 50-60's modern pieces in my home, I purchased this book to give me a better idea of what other items were out there. The designs have great style, but seem totally achievable. Using this book as a guide and source of inspiration you could decorate your home in a comfortable yet stylish manner. Some of the pieces they show are pricey, while others are probably inexpensive flea market finds. The author gives you enough information that you could go out into the flea markets and antique/second hand shops and make some sound purchase. It is a shame the book is less than 200 pages. I would have loved to see more.

5 out of 5 stars Expensive style without the costs!.......2001-12-30

This book is amazing. It teaches you to create a contemporary looking home, without the outrageous costs of designer furnishings. It tells you what to look for at thrift stores, and how to use what you already have. I would highly reccommend this book to anyone even just a little bit interested in design! It's truly great.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational book.......2000-11-15

For a book on home furnishings, this book certainly contains enough good pictures to get you inspired. It is also well researched and written and actually covers quite a lot of ground inspite of its rather small size at 144 pages. In fact, this book is so good, I only wish there was a bigger version of it, with even more wonderful examples of lovely interiors filled with retro furniture. This book covers interior styles from the Art Deco period to the 1970s. It does mention a little of the famous designers such as Noguchi, Eames, Nelson, etc., but its primary purpose is to teach you about how to achieve the modern retro look, with discussions on living rooms, kitchens, work rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, furniture, lighting and accessories. What I find particularly useful is the list of retailers specializing in original pieces of furniture, a list of retailers and manufacturers of modern re-issues, and a list of architects and designers whose work had been featured in the book. Be warned though, that the list consists mostly of companies in the United Kingdom. This book is definitely a good buy for enthusiasts of retro furniture.

Starting from the premise that he would photograph Liverpool and the people of Merseyside from the top of a bus, Wood spent over 15 years developing and refining his theme. The photographs are both visually stunning and dramatically revealing in their content. It is already recognised as one of the most impressive achievements of recent British photography.

              Book Description

It's been a long time coming, but Ballard Street fans can finally get their fix. In this first Ballard Street cartoon collection, cartoonist Jerry Van Amerongen (previously of The Neighborhood) is at his best, creating an assortment of panels that have one thing in common: an intense level of absurdity! On every page, the deranged antics of weird suburbanite characters provide delight for all.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Just what I hoped for.......2002-02-21

I have his previous books and believe them to be unique and worth having in any personal library. This new book is exactly like the others. If you liked his Neighborhood books, you'll like this one. Its more of the same, which is exactly what I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Jerry Van Amerongen is an Original Comic Genius.......2001-06-08

In my humble opinion, Jerry Van Amerongen is a comic genius. His "The Neighborhood" and "Ballard Street" panels take everyday phrases and/or situations and he turns them into absurdity when combined with his detailed, exaggerated drawings. During my day-to-day activities I am constantly reminded of his cartoons and I can't say that about any other cartoonist. Jerry (along with Gary Larson) completely changed the nature of the comics because before them the drawing was secondary to the humor of the panel or strip whereas they made the picture an integral part of it. Today, there are many comic panels that are of this type, but Ballard Street is still unique. My only criticism is that Jerry now focuses almost exclusively on dumpy old people in his panels, whereas in his old "The Neighborhood" panels he frequently used animals (particulary chickens which are really absurd creatures!) or inanimate objects which would seem to allow more creative possiblities. Anyway, enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Rut Bound Dullards and Their Soaring Fantasies.......1998-11-28

J Amerongen entertains us by divulging the home life, and inner musings of the folks who go through life being totally ignored. They have hum drum jobs, and share their boredom with a boring spouse. One man enjoys talking to his weeds, while Jocelyn posts household hints on her front window. Aaron sits stunned in his office as he realizes an original thought just passed through his brain. Others engage in a battle of wits with their dogs. They generally lose. Some find their world too stressful and drive up to the drive in therapy window for help.

Strange humor? You bet, but to me its the most hilarious stuff in the world. I was very disappointed when I bought the book, though, because at 144 pages I thought, "Oh no, I can read this at one sitting." My solution? I limited my reading of it to 6 pages a day. That way I could keep laughing for over three weeks.

I read JvA's Ballard Street daily newspaper cartoon in the LA Times for years, but then moved to humorless Atlanta. This book was a godsend, and I hope JvA comes out with a new one every other month. I'll buy them all.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, as usual........1998-10-28

Thanks Jerry! I've been a fan for years. This is the kind of humor that can be visited time and again without getting old. (Do not keep a copy in the bathroom without a seat belt.) I recognize so many of the characters depicted in these pages and many of them are me. (Going to have to work on that.) As a frustrated cartoonist (no talent) and self proclamed humorist (no laughing) it is to Jerry's alter that I bring my offerings. Just don't raise prices. I give these books to people I know well. I don't loan my collection anymore, because they never come back. (I'f your reading this Leonard, I know where you live.) And a warning; be very careful which ones you show to your wife. The last time it cost me flowers and a long dry spell (get it). I'f you've never purchaced a cartoon book before (I can only imagine your kind of person) now is your chance to hit one out of the park. If you like to put on a Snoopy suite and your wife gets a rolled up news paper and play "bad doggie", you'll like this book.

              Book Description

Metropolitan New York's Third Avenue Railway System features never-before-published photographs documenting the final years of this streetcar system, from 1940 to 1957. Chartered as the Third Avenue Railroad Company in 1853, the system provided streetcar service on Third Avenue from Ann Street to 61st Street. The line eventually extended north to Harlem and across 125th Street and, in its heyday, north of Manhattan into the Bronx and northern Westchester County. Individual lines, such as the Yonkers Railroad, the Westchester Electric Railroad, the Queensborough Bridge Railway Company, and the Union Railway, are featured in this book. Metropolitan New York's Third Avenue Railway System recalls the bygone street scenes of Manhattan, as well as some of the carbarns and work cars and the car-scrapping yard employed by the system.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent photo coverage of the Third Avenue Railway........2005-10-27

I grew up in New York City and was fortunate to have been able to ride and photograph Third Avenue Railway streetcars in the 1940's and early 1950's (called Third Avenue Transit by that time). Charles Ballard has given us a fine Arcadia book with excellent photos of Third Avenue cars in Manhattan, The Bronx and Westchester County.I recommend this book highly for anyone interested not only in the streetcars of New York but also of the way the city looked over 50 years ago.I never cease to be amazed at the increasing number of fine Arcadia books in their "Images Of Rail" and "Images Of America" series that have been appearing these days. Some of these books cover streetcar and traction operations in a number of different cities and this photo coverage of the Third Avenue Railway ranks with the best of them.

              5 out of 5 stars Distinctive Doggies.......2000-06-27

Van Amerongen's dogs tend to fall into one of two general categories. Some are the long-suffering and patient companions of decidedly eccentric owners who dress them up, involve them in odd rituals, and generally make life difficult. Others are just as eccentric, if not more so, than their owners. Both types are definitely funny. Fans of van Amerongen's humor will welcome this collection, although some of the cartoons included here also appeared in his recent collection "Ballard Street." (There is, however, enough new material to warrant buying this book.) Dog lovers with a healthy sense of the absurd will also want to get this book. Lots of fun.

                Product Description

From 1980 to 1990 THE NEIGHBORHOOD graced the comic pages of newspapers across the country. Along with Gary Larson s THE FAR SIDE, it redefined the single panel gag cartoon with short bursts of sophisticated and surreal humor. Van Amerongen introduced BALLARD STREET in 1991 . . . a rich continuation of his singular humor. Jerry Van Amerongen s cartoons have been in continuous syndication for over 26 years. Countless greeting cards, calendars, many other licensed products, and now the Internet have created a large and loyal following over the years. Jerry was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He spent the first 17 years of his professional life in corporate sales, marketing, and product management, coming to cartooning at age 40. Van Amerongen s boyhood memories were shaped by the ethnic influences of his Dutch and Polish heritage, images of roly-poly women in large print dresses and rotund men in baggy trousers.
