Book Description
Winner of the 2004 AIA Firm of the Year Award, Lake/Flato has been designing practical buildings since 1984. These are buildings whose ingenuity and craftsmanship merge tradition with new technologies. Their work seeks a modern vernacular yet builds upon the traditions of regional architecture by adapting local materials and craft to build well-sited structures that recognize the need for comfort and a strong connection to nature.
As William Turnbull wrote in his foreword for Lake/Flato's 1996 monograph, "nothing sensual or exotic, no visual fireworks of fashion, just architecture that intrigues the mind, delights the soul, and refreshes the eye with its elegant detail and simplicity".

lake/flato: buildings & landscapes.......2007-01-10
Although I appreciate the architecture, I am very inspired by the site work included in their projects. The tight connections between indoors and out, and the sustainable approach to the site interventions - whether planting, hardscape, structures - all inspire my work. Great book!
LAKE FLATO - EYES ON THE WORLD.......2006-08-19
A remarkable volume on much more than architecture. The works of Lake Flato teach us that mankind can grace the environment when so many are bent on destroying it.
Venecular Architecture and the 2004 AIA Firm of the Year.......2006-01-17
This book chronicles the work of the 2004 AIA Firm of the Year. It displays some the best work of a firm that has won numerous awards for a body of outstanding work that include some of the best examples of venecular architecture built in recent years. The forward by Pritzker Price Laureate Glenn Murcutt explains the reason this firm's work is so relevant. The introduction by Thomas Fisher provides insight into work that stands out for its clarity of meaning and use of sustainable materials. The photography and layout are equal to the high quality of the projects presented. Overall an outstanding book that is well written and photographed, capturing the work of an outstanding architectural fitm that has a lot to teach any practicing or even interested in architecture.
Creative Regionalism.......2002-03-18
From Texas to Florida to Australia! What do they have in commo? Regional architecture based upon site and climate. Lake-Flato do beautiful, regional architecture and this book documents their work in a clear and deliberate manner with many photos. Two wishes. One, floor plans and site plans to help us see how the elements relate to both. Two, a second volume documenting their more recent work. If you like contemporary casual with metal roofs, concrete, stone and wood and a relation of indoor to outdoors buy this book. You will enjoy it!
west coast architecture connosieur.......2001-06-01
Wow ! What incredible discipline from such young minds. They just remeber how the beauty of nature is the master artist and they always "check" to it's greatness. The bonus spaces (porches, deep roof overhangs, courtyards, etc.) increase the value of their architectural products. By "forever erasing" the barrier between the indoors and outdoors - this truly reinforces their love of nature. I wonder how many other of their piers have the courage to check their ego's at the drawing board and pay homage to the power and honest beauty of nature?

Book Description
With a mix of irreverence and sincerity, artists John Baldessari and Meg Cranston here tackle nothing less than the question of God. Acting as curators, they have invited 100 artists to respond to one of art's most enduring challenges: picturing the divine. The artists selected are those whose work the curators know and admire, those who possess the sense of humor and audacity necessary for such a project, or artists who are "likely to surprise." The works in this exhibition explore many different themes, including miracles, divine intervention, baptism, heaven, martyrdom, and the search for enlightenment. Included is one work by each of the 100 artists--primarily drawings, photographs, and paintings, along with a few sculptures and single-channel videos--some of them made in response to the curators' call for participation. Represented artists include Reverend Ethan Acres, Eleanor Antin, Chris Burden, Sam Durant, Jimmie Durham, Nicole Eisenman, Katharina Fritsch, Liam Gillick, Jack Goldstein, Scott Grieger, Rebecca Horn, Christian Jankowski, Mike Kelley, Mary Kelly, Martin Kippenberger, Louise Lawler, Roy Lichtenstein, Rita McBride, Paul McCarthy, Catherine Opie, Tony Oursler, Jorge Pardo, Raymond Pettibon, Paul Pfeiffer, Richard Prince, Rob Pruitt & Jonathan Horowitz, Gerhard Richter, Susan Rothenberg, Ed Ruscha, Gary Simmons, Lawrence Weiner, James Welling, and Franz West.

100 Artists See GOD, not politics.......2006-12-01
In response to the sole review for this book, having been at the exhibit I have to say that both the catalogue and the show did very well in sharing honest and intimate perspectives about personal relationships with divinity. While more political venues consistantly discuss God solely in relationship to religion, church, and state, _100 Artists See God_ serves both as a breath of fresh air and a reminder that the human relationship with the divine is individual and personal, transcending faith and political alignment.
A truly great idea that is stunnngly dissapointing in its execution.......2005-07-27
Art more than any other discipline has the ability to break open new intellectual and emotional ground. It an be a powerful tool. Governments and religions have tried to guide and or control artists since artists began translating their world view’s onto the pictorial and sculptural plane.
Religion has universally been a major control element in the sociology of artists, and the depiction of god is a major taboo in both the Christian and the Muslim world. Between religion and art is a fertile ground for the imagination, it is a ground that is still potentially loaded, a fertile ground for the artist to shock, or stimulate an audience.
You would think that a subject such as the depiction of god (given the military industrial religious complex which is currently so dominant) would engender more than a very light weight response from artists.
Sadly this is not the case. There are no compelling images of faith and devotion nor any compelling criticisms of god and religion, no overt discussion of the grotesque coupling of government and church, and so I can only say that this is a very disappointing book.
It is potentially an interesting project and the curator really ought to be dismissed for their lack of vision and inclusion. So many artists to choose from but they really have filled the book with mediocre works. Sadly evident in the bulk of the work displayed in the book is a lack of insight into the subject and a lackluster commitment to aesthetics.

Book Description
This comprehensive overview, the first to appear in almost a decade, examines an artistic career, that now must be viewed as one of the most fascinating in the history of Contemporary art. From his highly controversial and seminal performance works of the early 1970s, to his complex, imaginative installations and monumental sculptures, the art of Chris Burden uniquely informs as well as incorporates the major artistic undercurrents of the last three decades. Not only has the artist made a major contribution to the history of body-related performance art, but the artist's fascination with systems of power, societal organization, architectural structure and technological systems, have resulted in an extraordinary body of sculptural objects and environmental installations over the last 35 years. In compiling this publication the artist has worked closely with curator and long time associate Fred Hoffman, taking this opportunity to re-examine his work afresh and revealing images that are unpublished or rarely seen.
Book Description
The cultural-historical starting point of Saint Sebastian: Or a Splendid Readiness For Death is found in Gabriele D'Annunzio's Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian: A Mystery in Five Acts, a musical play on which D'Annunzio collaborated with Debussy and in which the role of Saint Sebastian was taken by D'Annunzio's lover, the dancer Ida Rubenstein, whose transvestism in the role brought denunciations from the Church. But that is another story. Nevertheless, our Saint Sebastian is similarly arranged into five thematic focal points: Sebastian as the "exemplary sufferer" (Susan Sontag); as multifarious icon of the history of civilization; as saint, who attracts misfortune upon himself in order to avert it from others; as fetish of erotic subcultures; and as vamp and dandy, whose beauty only blossoms in its full splendor when caught in the throes of excruciating agony. A sixth thematic point sneaks in here, and Saint Sebastian is brought up to date as the great "ecstatician" of art history. Oh, and the art. Contemporary artists whose work is explored through the lens of Saint Sebastian include Ron Athey, Louise Bourgeois, Chris Burden, Francesco Clemente, Bavo Defurne, Kirby Dick & Bob Flanagan, Cerith Wyn Evans, Eikoh Hosoe, Derek Jarman, Adi Nes, Luigi Ontani, Catherine Opie, Ana Maria Pacheco, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Paul Schrader, Kishin Shinoyama, Fiona Tan, Wolfgang Tillmans, Joel-Peter Witkin, and David Wojnarowicz.

One of the best resources for almost his entire body of work. Even if you have never seen his work in person, this book covers the meaning behind each of the works so compleatly that it makes sense to even the newest of his fans. For those who have seen his work it goes to show what a true genius he is.

Book Description
Amy, a pampered young Golden Retriever, is dognapped from her idyllic home and imprisoned in a grim London cell. In a daring escape with her pals, a learned but tearful King Charles Spaniel, a clever Yorkshire Terries, two stalwart Dobermans and a van Afghan, Amy and her friends make their way through the perils and landmarks of London, pursued by their criminal captors and the police (and possibly the dreaded Pound). Will the pals escape to find their way home and to freedom? For dog-lovers (and cat-lovers, too), from ten up.
Customer Reviews:
A great read for animal lovers young and old........2007-07-30
Amy gets into many scrapes and meets lots of interesting characters in this exciting tale of the seemingly helpless overcoming adversity through teamwork and optimism. What an uplifting read!
An adventure of talking dogs.......2007-03-02
Reviewed by Ian McCurley (age 13) for Reader Views (2/07)
Amy has a wonderful life. She lives in a rural English cottage near Burden Dell with her man and cook. She enjoys games of Shoe, and rules over the whole back yard (except cook's garden). Then, one day her man leaves in his noisy, smelly vehicle not to be seen for weeks. When Amy spots two men offering her a beautiful cut of steak, she instantly partakes. She feels drowsy and falls asleep. She has been dog-napped!
Amy awakens far from Burden Dell in a harsh and illegal dog prison where dogs are used to smuggle gems. She escapes with six other dogs before they are shipped to foreign countries, never to be seen again. Amy, Rodney, Angel, Hans, Pru, Rex and Lester travel through the streets of London. From Piccadilly Circus to Harrods Food Court, they are dodging cars and evading capture. They were being chased by the Fat Man and the Boxer, and Skull Face and Squat Lady, who are all smugglers from the kennel.
In their escape, they meet many friends, such as the Geese of Shelter Island and the Los Gatos de la Noche, or the Cats of the Night. The Cats of the Night are an underground organization of "cat burglars" who are, totally unexpectedly, cats. With the help of their new friends, the seven must make their way back to the old kennel and assisted by the strays of London, destroy the kennel and liberate the remaining captives. Can Amy free the dogs and find her master?
"Far From Burden Dell" is a good read if you like dogs, London or daring adventure stories. The author succeeds in pointing out that dogs are truly marvelous creatures and that in the face of adversity, they can persevere. I enjoyed the warm, fuzzy feeling I got when reading this book. After having been in London recently, I understand how the dogs were stunned by the sheer immensity of the city. Chris Coppel gave vivid, accurate and entertaining descriptions of London's monuments from a dog's viewpoint. This book changes the way you'll think about your dog.
This book is for ages 9 and up.
Cleverly Written and Insightful.......2005-07-30
The author has an uncanny way of seeing the world from the point of view of man's best friend. This book could be a challenge for some youngsters, but that will not diminish their enjoyment.
Pure Magic.......2005-05-17
I expected to read a simple animal adventure. Instead I found one of the most imaginative insights into animal thinking and logic. Chris Coppel has somehow found a way to give an amazing array of creatures their own voice. This is not simply a book for children. This is a book for anyone who loves animals.
A good story, too.......2005-05-14
This book has a bunch of great characters, mostly dogs, but also a couple of cats and geese thrown in too. It's exciting and sometimes sad, but it's always fun to read.

Book Description
The definitive book for learning and appreciating ballet, The Ballet Book goes behind the scenes to the classes, rehearsals, and performances that have shaped this prestigious ballet company. Readers will learn from the best as American Ballet Theatre dancers show how to stretch, stand, dance, and perform like professional ballerinas. Featuring photographs of dancers at their most dramatic--and most intimate--this fully illustrated book shares ballet's best-kept secrets and, by demonstrating how to watch and appreciate as well as to dance ballet, is indispensable for every dancer and lover of dance. The book offers a thorough explanation of each step in a dancer's routine: from preparing the shoes and stretching to classwork and rehearsals to the finale--the performance itself. Both a how-to and a privileged glimpse at the hours of practice and fierce determination that go into making the finest dancers, the book features ballet's brightest stars, including Nina Ananiashvili, popularly known as Nina Ballerina, and Ethan Stiefel, who has become a celebrity both onstage and off.
Customer Reviews:
fascinating and beautiful.......2006-05-08
This book is nothing but spectacular photography and interesting behind-the-scenes looks at one of the most beautiful arts in the world. I love ballet and I can't get enough of it. This book is one of my favorite things ever and it's a great addition to any book collection. Stories, costumes, and props for various major ballets from Nutcrakcer to Sleeping Beauty were a pleasant surprise that added to the quality of this book.
Behind-the-Scenes and upfront at ABT.......2005-08-15
A comprehensive overview of the workings of a major ballet company,in this case American Ballet Theatre, with detailed insights from administrators, students, staff, and principal dancers. Not only are various levels of experience explored (from corps to principals) but also some of the training involved and differences between styles of performance: Virtuoso/bravura, Lyrical/Adagio, Allegro. In short, what makes a dancer great or a performance work. There are also explanations of rehearsal scheduling, tech/dress rehearsals, and why time is money too.
The section on the details of partnering--especially lifts and preventing mistakes in timing or perception--was interesting because this is an area not usually covered in simple manuals of positions. Also the sections on what aspects of technique matter--e.g. purity of line, consistancy of positioning--besides the pyrotechniques of 32 fouettes or soaring ballon may help others see it's not all tricks. And finally someone shows proper hands and says no to 'droopy wrists'!
There are a wealth of photographs: Both corps demonstrating positions and rehearsing; Irina Kolpakova, Kevin McKenzie, Kirk Peterson, Guillaum Graffin teaching; Lar Lubovich choreographing; and the principals in performance of the major repertoire. Enjoy the pictures of current and up-and-coming soloist/corps members--some of whom are now principals. There are also one or two photos of principals prepping in their dressing rooms and/or the wings. The contrast between the dancers and the backstage gaffer/fly/grip staff and big$-donors observing rehearsals is also amusing.
All in all, a lovely overview of ABT busy at work bringing insight and enjoyment to us fans, however knowledgeable we are--or not. A good purchase, especially for the details provided and knowing comments of the dancers and teacher/coaches.

A beautiful book with photos and some text.
There is no real explanation of how to do anything ballet.
That is OK. Just understand that this is basically a book for decoration, not instruction.
SO FAR I LOVE THE BOOK, I CAN'T WAIT TO FINISH IT.......2003-12-04
I love everything about the text, photos. I use do ballet, but I didn't know anything about it when I took ballet. So this book is showing and telling about it. Its defintly a keepsake for me and my kids, grandkids, and so on. Thank you.
I Love This Book!!!!!.......2003-10-02
I just got this book a week ago and I love it! I am a 12 year old ballet dancer looking for new ways to improve myself in technique and choreography and this was definently the book to do that! The Ballet Book is now my favorite book and I read it when I have free time(when I am not dancing). The pictures were beautiful and had everything I needed to know right there! Thank you for this wonderful book!!!!!!!!
Book Description
From the late 1930s to the mid-1950s, DC Comics blazed a creative, innovative trail in popular culture, and the company has remained at the forefront of the comics industry ever since. In one milestone after another, DC Comics introduced the fantastic characters that became everyone's favorite super heroes: Superman, Batman and Robin, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern, and Shazam! This brilliantly illustrated volume features entirely new, large-format photography of the original comic books, showcasing the fabulous visual world of the DC comic-book heroes and artists.
Comics historian Les Daniels, graphic designer Chip Kidd, and photographer Geoff Spear have delved deep into the DC archives, to which they were granted unprecedented access, highlighting not only the classics that have become pop-culture icons but also lost gems like More Fun Comics and Comics Cavalcade. The 365 images, shot especially for this book, along with the impeccably researched text and informative introductory essays, ensure that this blast from the past will have a huge appeal for both comic-book devotees and newcomers. AUTHOR BIO: Les Daniels is the author of the official histories of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, as well as DC Comics: A Celebration of the World's Favorite Comic Book Heroes and Abrams' Marvel: Five Fabulous Decades of the World's Greatest Comics. Chip Kidd is an award-winning graphic designer and author of The Cheese Monkeys. His work has been featured in Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, Time, Graphis, and Entertainment Weekly. Geoff Spear's award-winning photographs have appeared in magazines such as Vogue, Entertainment Weekly, GQ, and Newsweek, and in numerous books on comics.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect Gift for Any Comics Fan !.......2007-07-02
Set up as 365-day calendar, this small coffee table book is anything but. What it is is a wonderful collection of comic book covers and pages from the 1930s through the 1950s. Artfully photographed and cropped by Geoff Spear, each of the 365 pages are a visual treat from the DC Comics universe.
Graphic designer Chip Kidd has set up the book not as a stuffy museum piece of days past, but as an explosion of Americana. Vibrant and alive, the pages burst with excitement and fun. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, and others are alive again as our parents or grandparents first saw them. It is quickly obvious why these characters inspired generation after generation, and are still alive and well today in the American consciousness.
Les Daniels does a superb job, as always, of summing up a character's history and importance, but has fun at the same time. Wit and sly commentary on Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Robin the Boy Wonder line these pages. If there is a `comics historian' out there, Daniels is it. And never is it more obvious than in this book, where he comments not only the big characters such as Superman and Batman, but on the smaller characters, the ones long-forgotten, and the myriad of villains.
And for one more bit of fun, the back cover of the book is a display of the ubiquitous advertisements of the day. Everything from X-ray glasses to whoopee cushions, all for just pennies!
Recent movies of Superman, Batman, and the like show that these characters of a by-gone era (and books like this) are still a constant gift and joy in America today. The Golden Age of DC Comics - 365 Days is a delight.
cruddy.......2007-05-12
dissapointed with this one , I expected to see some really quality illustrations, instead it looks like someone has got some really old comics and scanned them into this book right down to the newspaper style dots, I guess I didnt read the description properly before I bought this book, to me it is really a breif historical account in pictures using old comics, I dont know it might appeal to the purist comic freak, but I didn't like it. BEtter off relegated to being a paper weight or door stop nothing ground breaking in this, a boring book.
Classic Comic Pop Culture.......2007-01-10
This book is really fun to look at for those who love comic books. It showcases the art work in a fun new format. All the art used, is classic illustrations, and is a great way to look at classic art.
A collage of comics organized as a year.......2006-05-23
While the idea of making a book with 365 days may seem odd, this book is quite special. It can be read as a coffee table book. But it's really a remarkably well-informed collection of images from comics. The commentaries sometimes run for a paragraph, giving background on the artists or comic, and sometimes just a few lines, as an informative caption. What Daniels, Kidd, and Spear have done is create a unique compendium of images from DC comics that function like a quirky and very intelligent collection of often forgotten cultural icons. This book is a very worthwhile addition to a library, whether you're a comics freak, a student of popular culture, art history, or you just like beautiful books. The wealth of images is incredible. It can't be appreciated at one sitting.
365 pages of old memories.......2004-12-12
I agree that as you first glance at this book it seems like a calender. It's a hefty book that has some charm in its views of days gone by. I bought it for myself and wasn't dissapointed in its focus. Les Daniels always has an interesting view and smartly entertains as you go page to page. If one wants a more detailed overview of the subject there are many fine books to seek out. This one is more for a night when one doesn't want to read but rather to remember. Its well bound, excellently to the point concerning its subject. If one wants full covers go to the Photo Journal guide to comics by Gerber. It doesn't have everything but like this book is a visual companion.
Customer Reviews:
The Amazing World of DC Comics.......2007-05-10
This book goes over the history of DC Comics. It is a "coffee table" type book with lots of colorful pictures. It does a good job of discussing most of the major characters and genres published by DC over the years. Of course, superheroes get more pages than anything else, but they also cover things like romance comics and horror comics. Movie and television adaptations of DC Comics properties are also covered. Very well produced book that should appeal to anyone with an interest in comic books.
Attractive corporate history.......2005-10-05
This is a beautiful coffee table book, thoroughly illustrated and full of much fascinating trivia about comics. When reading it, though, it's important to remember that the book was fully approved and virtually coproduced by DC Comics, and so basically represents DC's PR department view of its history. For example, it mostly rationalizes or dismisses the company's appalling treatment of Superman's creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. For history, there are non-corporate approved books that do a much more realistic job. But for beautiful pictures and an overview of the comics themselves, this is great.
History of comics, cartoons, movies and television versions .......2005-04-07
The best description of the power of Superman as a cultural icon is the answer that former science fiction writer Isaac Asimov gave to the question: "How is it possible that Superman is capable of flying faster than light?" His answer was, "Einstein's theory of relativity is based on theory, while Superman's powers are based on fact." While Asimov's answer is of course presented with tongue in cheek, it does demonstrate the influence Superman has over our lives. He, along with Batman, have been the primary characters in the DC comics group of characters.
However, the DC comics group has featured many different characters over the years, and even the main characters have undergone dramatic changes. This book is a recapitulation of those characters as well as their origins and in some cases their demise and rebirth. Even Superman was once killed by a super villain, an event that made national headlines. Many people considered the death of a hero to be intolerable, yet the issue where Superman was killed sold more than any other issue that was not a premiere issue. Unusual and short-lived characters such as Deadman, the Creeper, and the team of the Hawk and the Dove are mentioned.
If you are serious about comics, then this is a book you must read. The television and movie incarnations of the comic heroes are also included. Until I read this book, I never realized how many different television series and pilots featuring DC super heroes have been created. Superman, Superboy, Supergirl, Batman, Flash, and Wonder Woman have all been the star of one or more television series. While some never progressed beyond the pilot stage, others are timeless. Even though the special effects are weak when compared to what can now be done, the strength of the characters still makes the Superman series starring George Reeves well worth watching
Great introduction to the world of DC Comics........2003-08-31
Buyers beware, apparently this is an updated edition of Les Daniels' earlier book, so don't fork out the money if you already own the earlier book, unless you think 16 pages of new material is worth the price. Otherwise, this is an excellent introduction to the world of DC Comics. It summarises the history of most of the major DC characters, from their humble origins to their glory days and beyond. Much more so than Marvel characters, DC characters like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the Justice League have, over the last half century or so, worked their way into the very cultural fabric and the psyche of the American public. With the advent of globalisation, their influence now extends well beyond the shores of America into the wider world - just show anyone in Australia, which is on the opposite side of the globe, a picture of Lynda Carter in her star-spangled costume, and they can tell you that she is Wonder Woman. A great reference for all comic book lovers, especially fans of DC characters.
New Title,New Cover,Same Book.......2003-07-13
Although the content still rates 5 Stars this edition has been deceptivly marketed and doesn't.This is essentially a reprint of DC Comics :60 Years from 1995. Ok it's an updated edition with 16 additional pages but that's only printed on the back cover. If you liked Les Daniels work on the first book you can easily be suckered into buying this edition online thinking it's a new book. It's not!
